WE ARE “ETSU”The ETSU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics would like to ask both the print and broadcast media to honor our request to be called “ETSU” throughout the 2018 season. East Tennessee State in first reference is acceptable, but subsequent references should be ETSU. On TV graphics, please use ETSU. Our full nickname is the Buccaneers, but “Bucs” is also encouraged.

ABOUT ETSU ETSU enters this weekend 9-2 on the season. The Blue and Gold are 8-1 at home and are hitting .310 at the dish at Thomas. As a team, they are fifth in the nation with a .555 slug-ging percentage. The Bucs’ pitching staff has been wildly successful early in the season, striking out a total of 124 hitters, averaging 11.3 K/9 innings.

ETSU'S LAST WEEKENDThe Bucs swept the ETSU Baseball Tournament last weekend with a win over Wagner, Marist and Ohio. The Bucs outscored their opponents 23-11 over the weekend. Through-out the weekend ETSU's pitching staff combined for a 1.33 ERA with just four ER and four walks. The staff combined for 34 strikeouts on the mound. ETSU's weekend success came with the help of Landon Knack on Friday who set a school record with 16 strikeouts and offensively on Saturday, David Beam's grand slam in the eighth put the dagger on the 13-1 win. On Sunday, the Bucs had closer games, but a Cade Gilbert inside-the-park HR was the difference maker in game one vs Marist. In the tournament finale, Markell Graham came through with 2 RBIs and a run scored in his best game of the early season.

SCOUTING TENNESSEEThe Vols entered last weekend 13-0 but lost the series to Wright State and now hold a 14-2 record. UT is hitting .307 as a squad and hold a strong 1.81 ERA on the mound. While scoring 10.2 runs per game, the Vols have 67 extra-base hits. Offensively, Liam Spence has started in 15 of the Vols’ 16 games and hosts a .362 batting average with two doubles and a home run. He holds a .483 on-base percentage as one of five Vols with 10 or more walks.

MATCHUP ON THE MOUND The Bucs will be throwing Tucker Rogers for his third midweek start this season. He is 1-0 this year after allowing a total of three runs between starts at Virginia Tech and Clemson. He secured the upset win over the Tigers on Feb. 25 with five innings and giving up just two runs on six hits. Recently he pitched one inning on Saturday against Wagner and allowed no hits, struckout one and walked a batter. Tennessee's starter, Camden Sewell has not thrown a pitch this season. Last year he went 4-1 in five starts with 43 strikeouts in 45.1 innings of work.

THREE IS THE MAGIC NUMBERAfter recording winning seasons each in 2017, '18 and '19, the Bucs secured three winning seasons in a row for the first time since the 1981-83 seasons. In those years, ETSU went 44-17, 34-19 and 20-18, respectively. In 2017, ETSU finished 30-29 and in 2018 began the Joe Pennucci era with a 28-25 mark. Last season, the Bucs finished with a 34-21.

SETTING RECORDSLast weekend in game one of a Sunday doubleheader against Georgia State, the Bucs set a new single-game record with seven home runs in the contest. Their 16 home runs this season are good for 11th in Division I. SERIES HISTORY The Vols lead the all-time series 66-20 and Tennessee holds a 29-11 record in Knoxville. The Bucs have defeated their instate rival in each of the three five seasons including three games in Knoxville.

SOCON PRESEASONThe Bucs were slated fourth along with UNCG in the Southern Conference preseason coaches poll. The Bucs tallied three preseason All-SoCon selections in Jackson Greer, Landon Knack and Nathanial Tate. The media picked the Bucs to finish fifth.

SEC PRESEASONThe Vols were picked to finish fourth in the the Eastern Division of the Southeastern Con-ference. UT outfielder, Alerick Soularie was named to the Preseason All-SEC first team

KKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKNACKLandon Knack has been lights out throughout his four starts and has picked up three SoCon weekly accolades in the span. This season he leads the nation with 51 strikeouts and a 51.0 strikeout to walk ratio. He holds a team leading 1.08 ERA among pitchers with more than five innings.

RIDE THE STREAK The Bucs are on an eight game win streak for the sixth time in program history. It is the second-loggest in program history (nine in 1983). ETSU has outscored opponents 68-27 in the last eight games.

TATE CLOSES OUT THE THREE SELECTIONSOne of the top relief arms in the Southern Conference, Nathanial Tate rounded out the three All-SoCon preseason selections. Tate, in his freshman year campaign, made 18 relief appearances and was one of the top bullpen arms in the league. He boasted a 1.21 ERA in 29.2 innings with a 4-0 record and three saves and was named to the SoCon All-Freshman team.

FOUR IS THE WAY TO GO...This is the third time since rejoining the SoCon in 2015 that the Bucs have been slated fourth in the SoCon preseason poll (2015, 2017). The Bucs have never been ranked higher than fourth in their last five years.

POUR IT ON EARLYLast year, ETSU outscored their opponents 122-77 in the first three innings of action. Their biggest inning of production at the dish and on defense was the third as they outscored the opposition 46-18.

GOT THE LEAD? When having a lead this season, the Bucs are 6-0 and have not lost a game in 2020 when having a lead over their opponent. They are 5-0 when holding a lead after the sixth inning and have two come-from-behind wins (Toledo 2/16, Rider 2/23).

3Head coach, Joe Pennucci is entering his third sea-son at the helm of ETSU Baseball. Over the course of two seasons, he holds a 62-46 record.

The Bucs set a new pro-gram record with seven home runs earlier this month over Georgia State up with an 18-7 victory at Thomas Stadium.

10In 2019, ETSU won 10 games decided by one run. The mark more than doubled their total from 2018 and was one away from tying the program record of 11.

4The Bucs were slated fourth along with UNCG in the SoCon coaches preseason poll with 39 votes. It is the third time in the last six years the Bucs were picked fourth.

1The Bucs have one player who has reached base safely in all 14 games this season (Noah Hill). To open up the season, he held an eight game hit streak.

GAME 15 | TENNESSEE | MAR 10, 2020 | LINDSEY NELSON STADIUM

D1BASEBALL.COM PRESEASON MENTIONSPrior to the start of the 2020 season, D1Baseball.com came out with a plethora of preseason polls, teams and watch lists. The site picked the Bucs fourth in their SoCon preseason poll while naming Jackson Greer to their preseason all-conference team. In their conference watch list, Greer and Landon Knack were slated as two of the SoCon's top prospects for this years MLB Draft. Knack came it at No. 10 while Greer followed at No. 12.

D1Baseball listed Ashton King and Hunter Loyd as two of the top impact freshman in the league. Both players are natives of Knoxville while King went to Farragut HS, one of the top high school teams in the country as Loyd went to Christian Acad. of Knoxville.

MORE D1BASEBALL.COM PRESEASON COVERAGEIn addition to the preseason polls, Greer and Knack continued to pick up honors throughout the websites' preseason lists. Landon Knack was named the 11th best pitcher in all of Division 1 while Jackson Greer was listed as the 24th-best catcher in the NCAA. Additionally the website listed Greer as the 77th best hitter in the country.

LYLE STAYIN' IN STYLE Lyle is hitting a team-best .483 and is the lone Buc to have a hit in all eight games this season. He is tied for first in the nation with eight stolen bases this season. Lyle swiped just nine in 2019.

WE'LL TAKE TWO The Bucs are averaging 2.14 doubles per game which is 13th among Division I teams. ETSU has 21 doubles this season led by Lyle with five.

2019 PITCHING STANDOUTSThe Bucs' starting pitching rotation held numbers which led the SoCon and were some of the best in the nation. Last year, led by current MLB minior leaguer, Micah Kaczor, the Bucs were 11th in the nation with a 3.48 team ERA. Landon Knack is the only member of the starting three that will return to the mound as a Buc this spring. All three pitchers found themselves with below a 3.50 ERA good for the top-200 in the NCAA and in the top-10 in the league.

Micah Kaczor — 2.13 ERA, 33rd in NCAA, 2nd in SoConLandon Knack — 2.60 ERA, 70th in NCAA, 4th in SoConDaniel Sweeney — 3.23 ERA, 168th in NCAA, 7th in the SoCon

WHO ARE THESE NEW GUYS?Coach Pennucci & Co. have brought in 12 newcomers to this years squad, less than half of the 25 from last years team. Of the 12, half of them are freshman and the other six are transfers with four coming from Walters State Community College. Prior to ETSU, Landon Knack also attended Walters State CC.

NOT SO FARRAGUT AWAYOf the six freshman, three of them have played together at Farragut High School in Knoxville which MaxPreps.com considers to be the ninth best baseball program in the nation and the top high school baseball team in the Volunteer State. The 2019 squad won the state championship.

KING OF THE NEWCOMERS Ashton King, one of the prospects from Farragut looks to make an impact on day one. The Knoxville native hit .407 in his senior year campaign with 21 extra base hits, nine of them being home runs.

SENIOR SEND OFFCoach Pennucci's 2020 squad consists of seven seniors and one grad student. The se-nior, led by the battery of Greer and Knack, also consider of Noah Hill, Jake Lyle, Cade Gilbert, Reese Farmer, and Ethan Cady. Jake Madole is the lone graduate student on the roster.

THE SENIORS AT THE DISHThe five seniors that saw time at the plate last season (Hill, Lyle, Greer, Gilbert and Cady), combined for a .277 batting average in 2019 and combined for 52% of the Bucs' hits last year (266 of 510).

HEAD COACH JOE PENNUCCI

On July 10, 2017, the ETSU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced that former Stony Brook associate head coach Joe Pennucci has been named the new head coach of the Buccaneers’ baseball program.

Through two seasons at the helm, Pennucci owns a 62-46 record. In 2019, Pennucci’s squad finished with a 34-21 record, marking the best record for the program since 2011. Furthermore, the 2019 team set new a Thomas Stadium record with a 22-9 home record — among the best home records in the nation.

Pennucci previously served as recruiting coordinator at Stony Brook in 2017 and helped guide the program to multiple NCAA Regionals over the last 12 seasons – including a trip to the College World Series in 2012.

Following a 28-25 record in his first season, the skipper brought national prominence to the Bucs in year two. On March 25, ETSU received six votes for the USA Today Top 25 Coaches’ Poll and remained among the voted teams for two weeks after jumping to a 22-6 record halfway through the campaign.

Furthermore, Pennucci helped ETSU cap its third straight winning season in 2019 for the first time since ETSU completed winning seasons 1981-83.

Under Pennucci’s watch, the ETSU pitching staff had the 11th lowest ERA in the nation at 3.48 — led by senior ace Micah Kaczor at 2.13 to rank second in the Southern Conference. Kaczor ranks second in ETSU history for single season ERA and third in career ERA (3.42). The current career ERA is upcoming senior Landon Knack at 2.60, who Pennucci signed for 2019 out of Walters State Community College.

In that 2019 season, Pennucci swept three straight opponents for the first time in ETSU history, opening the season with three-game sweeps over Iona, Wagner and LIU-Brooklyn. ETSU also won its first seven series with a 19-2 record in that span, taking two of three from Georgia State in Atlanta and George-town in Johnson City while sweeping both NJIT and SoCon rival Western Carolina at home.

Among his marquee wins that season, Pennucci and the Bucs defeated No. 23 Tennessee at Knoxville in a 6-5 thriller. The win marked ETSU’s first victory over a ranked opponent since 2014 while also giving the Bucs their third straight victory over Tennessee when playing in Knoxville.

ETSU turned in a winning record in Pennucci’s debut year, finishing 28-25 overall with an 11-13 mark in conference play. Pennucci’s squad racked up over half its wins away from home, going 14-12 in true road contest coupled with two neutral site wins.

The first-year skipper added signature victories to his resume last season, knocking off the Tennessee Volunteers twice in Knoxville and defeating teams such as Tulane, Memphis, Marshall, UNCG, Samford and Florida Gulf Coast. The team also swept a key non-conference series against Winthrop, who won the Big South regular season championship the previous season.

Under Pennucci’s watch, a plethora of individual records, milestone and league-leading marks were set last season. Among those accolades, senior Chris Cook finished among the conference leaders with a .364 batting average and broke the ETSU all-time hits record in his second to last career game. Cook finished the season on a 12-game hitting streak, passing the record of 307 set by Paul Hoilman in 2011 to finish with 310...79 of which came this past season.

In his two seasons, ETSU has had five first team all-conference selections, two second team selections, one all-tournament selection and four all-freshmen.
