(Normal voice) “Hey, how did I do? I’ve been so excited about this month’s theme of The Big Quiz that I’ve been studying up to try to perfect my best game show host voice. Did I nail it? (Pause for response.)

“Well, thank you for your kind response! This month we’ll have a lot of fun sharing our knowledge—and maybe even learning something new, too. Knowledge is actually our Life App this month.

THEME OF THE MONTH CG: Knowledge Slide

“Knowledge is learning something new so you can be better at whatever you do!

CG: Theme Slide

“Knowledge is so important! No matter what you want to be good at, you have to learn about it first. Like, if you want to play a sport like soccer, you need to learn the moves, the rules, and the positions. If you want to learn to play an instrument, you have to learn how to read the notes and understand the instrument itself. And it’s the same way with God. If we want to get to know God, we’ve got to learn more about Him!

“Let’s kick things off today by playing The Big Quiz. All month, it’s a Battle of the Grades!

CG: “The Big Quiz: Battle of the Grades” Slide

“Let’s get one Small Group Leader and one kid to represent each grade.

Choose one Leader per grade, and have that Leader bring up one kid from his/her group. Have each pair of contestants stand behind the tape line for their grade, Give an answer cube to the pair representing each grade.

“I’ll ask our contestants a series of trivia questions. (To contestants) Contestants, you’ll choose your answers with your cube. Just hold out the box with the letter you think is the answer facing forward. (Demonstrate.) When every grade has an answer, I’ll reveal the correct answer and see who got it right. Every pair that got the correct answer will then get to move one step closer to the stage. We’ll see which grade can go the farthest.

“Oh—I almost forgot! (To contestants) There’s another side of the cube that you can use. It’s the question mark—your lifeline. (To Leader) If you get stuck, hold out the question mark. (Demonstrate.) You can only use your lifeline ONCE . . . but when you do, you’ll get to ask your grade and see if THEY know the answer.

“There can only be one lifeline per question, so whoever chooses the question mark first gets to use it. We’ll do the lifeline AFTER all other contestants have chosen an answer.

“Audience, when you hear the question, make sure you don’t shout out the answer, okay? It’s time for our contestants to show what they know!

“Our topic today is . . . Disney movies and shows! Fun! All of our questions will

be about the wonderful world of Disney. (To contestants) Contestants, are you ready? Let’s begin.

Ask the questions, and give the contestants a few seconds per question to hold out a letter on their answer cube.

Once all contestants have chosen an answer, use your answer cube to reveal the correct answer. Let those who got it correct take one step forward. (If you have “pathways” made from multicolored construction paper, they can step to the next square.)

If a contestant holds out the question mark on his/her answer cube, give the kids from that grade a chance to shout out the answer. (But wait until the other contestants have all chosen an answer first.) Give the Leader/kid pair from that grade a chance to choose the answer with their cube. Then reveal the answer to the question like usual.

“I have these potato puppets, and I need some puppeteers to make them move around and act out the story as I tell it. Raise your hand if you want to be Joseph’s puppeteer.

Bring up a kid (with his hand raised) to be Joseph’s puppeteer. Have him stand behind the tables, all the way on the far left (if looking from the audience).

“Great. Let’s add Mary. Raise your hand if you want to help with her.

Bring up another kid (with her hand raised) to be Mary’s puppeteer. Have her stand with the other kid, on the far left.

“Last but not least, we have Jesus. But just so you know, this isn’t baby Jesus; this is 12-year-old Jesus. Not much older than you!

Bring up another kid (with her hand raised) to be Jesus’ puppeteer. Have her stand with the other two kids, on the far left.

Note: If you have a large environment, you may want to take a minute to walk the potato family around the room so the kids can see them up close. Then go back up on stage to tell the story.

“All set? Great. Let’s jump in!

Reference the potatoes as you start to tell the story. If the kids start to have them “act,” great!

“Before Jesus was born, the angel Gabriel told Mary all about how her baby, Jesus, was God’s Son. But after Jesus was born, He had to learn to walk and talk just like any normal child. We can imagine that He worked with His dad, Joseph, building things in the carpenter’s shop. He must have had chores to do around the house, too.

CARAVAN TO THE TEMPLE

Place the “Nazareth” and “Jerusalem” signs on opposite ends of the tables—with “Nazareth” on the far left side where the three kids are standing.

STORYTELLER: “Every year, Mary and Joseph would take Jesus from their home in Nazareth (point to the ‘Nazareth’ sign) to the temple in Jerusalem (point to the ‘Jerusalem’ sign) for the Passover feast. Passover is a celebration each year to remember how God had saved His people from slavery in Egypt.

“But Mary, Joseph, and Jesus didn’t travel alone. They went together with lots of friends and family, in a large group.

Set the bag of multicolored potatoes on the table next to Mary, Joseph, and Jesus.

(To the kids on stage) “Okay, Mary, Joseph, and Jesus. Let’s head to Jerusalem.”

SFX: “On the Road Again” instrumental

Move the bag of multicolored potatoes across the table from the “Nazareth” sign all the way to the “Jerusalem” sign. Get the three kids to move their potatoes with you, bobbing to the music.

I FEEL LIKE WE FORGOT SOMETHING STORYTELLER: “They all had a great time celebrating at the feast.

Guide the kids to make their potatoes dance and “celebrate.”

“They took time to remember all the amazing things God had done. Then, after the feast was over, Jesus' parents left for home.

SFX: “On the Road Again” instrumental

Move the bag of multicolored potatoes back across the table from the “Jerusalem” sign toward the “Nazareth” sign, getting about halfway across. Get the Mary and Joseph kids to move their potatoes with you, but have the kid playing Jesus stay behind at the “Jerusalem” sign.

“Jesus stayed behind . . . but they weren’t aware of it. They thought He was with them, so they traveled toward home for a day. Then they began to look for Jesus among their relatives and friends.

Hold the bag of multicolored potatoes in the air next to the Mary and Joseph potatoes. Try to get the kids on stage to interact with you.

“They were like, ‘Have YOU seen Jesus? Have YOU seen Jesus? Has anyone seen Jesus?’

“They couldn't find Him, so they went back to Jerusalem to look for Him.

FOUND HIM! STORYTELLER: “Let’s zoom in on Jerusalem for this next part.

Flip the “Nazareth” sign over to reveal “Marketplace," and flip the “Jerusalem” sign over to reveal “Temple.”

“Let’s see . . . we’ve got the marketplace and the temple. (Reference the signs; this is for the non-readers.)

“When Mary and Joseph got to Jerusalem, they looked everywhere for Jesus!

Have the Mary and Joseph kids bring their potatoes over to the “Marketplace” side of the table. Give each of them a mini flashlight (turned on). Show them how to make their potatoes shine the flashlights around.

“They went all throughout the giant marketplace. They searched and searched and searched for three whole days.

“Then—finally—they found Jesus in the temple courtyard!

Have the Mary and Joseph kids shine their flashlights onto the “Jesus” potato (which is still over by the sign that now says “Temple”).

“Jesus was sitting with the teachers.

Pick up the russet potatoes and set them on the table behind “Jesus.”

“He was listening to them and asking them questions. Everyone who heard Him was amazed at how much He understood and His answers to their questions.

“As you can imagine, Mary and Joseph were very relieved . . . and also very upset.

Move the Mary and Joseph kids (and their potatoes) over to the “Temple” area, near Jesus and the teachers.

“So Mary warmed up her very best mom voice. She said this to Jesus.

Reference the “Mary” potato. Open the Bible to Luke 2:48 (NIrV) and read.

“Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been worried about you. We have been looking for you everywhere.

“Mary didn’t get it. She didn’t know why Jesus had stayed behind at the temple. Jesus answered her this way:

Reference the “Jesus” potato. Open the Bible to Luke 2:49 (NIrV) and read.

“‘Why were you looking for me?’ he asked. ‘Didn't you know I had to be in my Father's house?’

“Mary and Joseph didn’t totally understand what Jesus was saying. Later, Mary continued to wonder and think about it. But for now, they were so relieved to have found Jesus safe and sound!

“Let’s thank ALL of our potato actors . . . and our awesome puppeteers!”

Get the three kid volunteers to make their potatoes bow, while you pick up the other

assorted potatoes and make them bow. Then dismiss the kid volunteers to their seats.

WRAPPING UP THE STORY STORYTELLER: “After Mary and Joseph found Jesus, they all went home to Nazareth, and Jesus obeyed them. And that’s not all.

Open the Bible to Luke 2:52 (NIrV) and read.

“Jesus became wiser and stronger. He also became more and more pleasing to God and to people.

“Here’s what I think is so amazing about this story. Jesus is God’s Son—but as He grew up, He still needed to learn things like you and me. He knew it was important to discover all He could about God. That’s why he was in the temple talking about God with the leaders.

CG: Bottom Line Slide

“Jesus knew that [Bottom Line] knowing God is the most important thing.

“The same thing that was true for Jesus is true for us today. We need to take the time to get to know God. We need to search for knowledge about Him. That’s the most important kind of knowledge we could ever find!

MEMORY VERSE CG: Blank Memory Verse Slide

“We’re learning a new verse this month to help us remember that wisdom comes from God. It’s Proverbs 2:6.

CG: Memory Verse Slide

"The Lord gives wisdom. Knowledge and understanding come from his mouth,

Proverbs 2:6 (NIrV).

“You see—when we get to know more about God, He gives us knowledge and understanding. When you know what God cares about and how He cares about you, it can change how you look at everything else in your life.

“Now it’s time for you to head to Small Group and talk some more about how you can know God better!”

“Let’s Pray”

PRAY STORYTELLER: “Dear God, thank You for the reminder today that the most important thing is to know You. We want to be like Jesus and take time to get to know You better every day. Help us to spend time learning about You, talking to You, and asking questions about You, so we can be better at following You. We love You, and we pray these things in Jesus’ name, amen.”

met someone who had a nickname? Do any of YOU have a nickname? Raise your hand if you do. (Pause.) That’s cool!

“Sometimes a nickname is just a shortened version of your name. Sometimes people get a nickname based on something they do—something that they’re famous for.

“Well, there was a guy who played an important part in God’s Big Story (hold up Bible) who had a pretty cool nickname: John the Baptist. How do you suppose he got that name? Well, let me tell you.

CG: Bible Story Illustration #1: Gabriel appearing to Zechariah

SFX: Heavenly music

“Before John was born, the angel Gabriel had appeared to his father, Zechariah. The angel told Zechariah that he and his wife Elizabeth would have a son—a boy who would be filled with God’s Spirit and prepare people’s hearts for God.

“Now, John was just six months older than Jesus. As an adult, he now lived in the desert. He wore clothing made from camel's hair. He ate honey and bugs called locusts.

“I know, that might sound a little strange. It certainly is . . . different. But here’s the important thing about John. People came from Jerusalem and all of Judea to see him! John would teach them about God. He spent his time baptizing people in the Jordan River.”

“The religious leaders wanted people to only come to THEM to learn about God. So they sent priests and teachers to investigate John. They asked John if he was the One God had promised—the Savior. But John told them that he was just a messenger.

Open the Bible to John 1:26-27 (NIrV) and read.

“I baptize people with water,” John replied. “But someone is standing among you whom you do not know. He is the one who comes after me. I am not good enough to untie his sandals.”

“God had already told John that he would see the Spirit of God come down and rest on someone—and John would know that THAT person would be the Son of God.

“Well, someone VERY special came to see John out at the Jordan River. He asked John to baptize Him. It was Jesus!

“In other words, John told his followers that he wasn’t the Savior, but that Jesus was.

“In fact, John told them:

WRAPPING UP THE STORY STORYTELLER: “John had spent his life listening to God. He discovered the truth about Jesus and shared it with everyone he met. John understood something really, really important: that Jesus is God’s Son. As people heard what John and Jesus had to say, more and more of them chose to follow Jesus, too.

“It would have been easy for John to get his feelings hurt when people were leaving him to follow Jesus. But John knew that nothing could be more important than knowing Jesus. His job was to make sure that everyone else got the chance to know Jesus, too. He knew this:

JESUS: “Scripture says, ‘Do not test the Lord your God’” (Luke 4:12, NIrV).

Prove it!’ Once again, Jesus refused him by quoting something that God had Moses write down in the Old Testament. (Hold up Bible.) Jesus told the devil that we shouldn’t test God; we should have faith and believe.

“Let’s give a big hand to our two actors. (To volunteers) Great job, you two!”

“Did you notice that each time the devil tried to trick Jesus, Jesus answered with Scripture? (Hold up Bible.) Jesus had spent His whole life discovering God’s words—the same words that we can read today in the Bible. Jesus was ready when it came time to [Basic Truth] make the wise choice. That way, the devil couldn’t tempt Him to do something wrong.

“It’s important for US to read the Bible, too. The words in the Bible can help us [Basic Truth] make the wise choice.

THEME OF THE MONTH CG: Knowledge Slide

“Remember, knowledge is learning something new so you can be better at whatever you do.

“You always need to learn about something before you can get better at it. Our relationship with God works the same way. We need to learn more about God and find out what’s most important to Him. Then we can be better at following Him.

“That’s right—we’re bringing this one home and asking some fun questions about our very own church and community! How well do you know [your environment’s name]?

“Let’s get one Small Group Leader and kid to represent each grade.

Choose one Leader per grade, and have that Leader bring up one kid from his/her group. (Ideally, choose a Leader and kid who didn’t play last week. Also, make sure the kid is a regular attender who would have a good chance of knowing the answers to the questions.) Have each pair of contestants stand behind the tapeline for their grade, at the back of the room. Give an answer cube to the pair representing each grade.

(To contestants) “Contestants, I’ll ask you a series of questions about our church and our community. You’ll use your answer cube to show your answer for each one. When every grade has an answer, I’ll reveal the correct answer. Every pair that answered correctly will then get to move one step closer to the stage.

“Each grade has one lifeline, which is the question mark on your cube. If you choose the lifeline, then you’ll get to ask your grade and see if THEY know the answer. Whoever chooses the question mark first gets to use it, and we’ll do the lifeline AFTER all other contestants have chosen an answer. Whichever grade is closest to the stage at the end of the game wins!

(To audience) “Remember not to shout out the answers, so our contestants have a chance to guess. Be ready to shout out your answer in case they need a lifeline, though!

Church/community trivia questions:

You can design questions about your church/kids’ program and/or your community. Try to make them fun and silly! Also keep in mind that some kids may have more familiarity than others, so try not to present the answers like everybody knows them. Let it be a fun way to educate everyone about your church and community! Some suggestions for game questions are below (you’ll need to fill in the multiple-choice answers for each question: A through D).

1. Who/what was our town named for? 2. What is our town famous for? 3. Which of these people was born in our town? (famous people) 4. What is the mascot of our high school? 5. What is something in our town that people go to when they come to

visit? (local tourist attraction) 6. In what year did our church first open? 7. Which part of our church building was built first? 8. Why is [name of your kids’ environment] called [name of your kids’

environment]? 9. What is [your pastor’s name]’s middle name? 10. What do I do for fun when I’m not here hosting [name of your kids’

environment]? 11. What is [Host/Storyteller’s] favorite type of candy? 12. What is our Worship Leaders’ favorite song to sing? (poll them in

advance) 13. Which of these statements is NOT one of our three Basic Truths?

After you finish the questions, congratulate the Leader/kid pair that made it closest to the stage. Collect the answer cubes and dismiss the contestants to their seats.

“Way to go, everyone! It’s been such a fun month playing The Big Quiz: Battle of the Grades! Now it’s time to get on your feet and get ready to sing and worship God together.”

Worship Leaders enter as Host exits.

We’re picking up God’s Big Story today by talking about a man named John the Baptist. We actually told another part of John’s story a couple of weeks ago. If you were here, you might remember that John had been sent to prepare the way for Jesus.

“Jesus came to John and asked to be baptized, and God Himself told John and everyone else that Jesus was, in fact, God's chosen One—God’s Son, the Savior. This was a really big deal! John had lots of followers of his own, but he made sure to always point people to Jesus.

“To tell us more about this firsthand, let’s bring out today’s guest: John the Baptist!”

Host enters, dressed as John the Baptist. He’s carrying a bowl, a bottle of honey, and the “Honey Nut Locusts” cereal box.

Host and Storyteller sit in the interview chairs (on one side of the stage). Host pours cereal into a bowl, pours honey on it, and then starts eating.

YO KING, THAT’S WRONG STORYTELLER: (To Host) “Welcome, John! I have to say, you look a little bit like our friend [Host’s name]. I see we interrupted your breakfast. What are you eating there?”

HOST: “My favorite: locusts and wild honey. (Looking at the box) Or as this here says, “Honey Nut Locusts.” Yum. Gooey sweetness and filled with protein! You want to try some?”

STORYTELLER: “Nah, I’m good.”

HOST: “You are missing out, my friend!”

STORYTELLER: “I’m sure. Now, I understand that you told the king—King Herod—that he was doing some wrong things. You told him he was sinning against God. How did that go?”

Page 44: Knowledge · 2020-01-03 · B. Pongo (from 101 Dalmatians) C. Slinky Dog (from Toy Story) D. Nemo (from Finding Nemo) 10. Who says, “To infinity and beyond!” A. Bo Peep B. Jessie

HOST: “Not well. Do you want me to demonstrate?”

STORYTELLER: “Please do.”

Host puts the cereal down and walks over to the other side of the stage. He picks up the megaphone and crown.

HOST: “King Herod was doing some bad stuff. So, I was like, (into the megaphone) ‘King, that’s wrong!’ He was all, (put on the crown) ‘No it’s not, I’m the king’ . . . and I was all, (into the megaphone) ‘God isn’t going to be happy with you. You really should stop doing that!’ . . . and he was all, (put on the crown) ‘Silence! Throw him in jail!’ (Pause.) Then I was thrown into jail.”

Host walks back over to the interview chairs and sits down.

STORYTELLER: “Wow. That’s terrible. I’m sorry that you had to go through that. I’m also sorry that the king didn’t listen to you.”

HOST: “It’s okay. I mean, I have to obey God. If that means I go to jail for doing what’s right, then I go to jail.”

STORYTELLER: “That’s a really great attitude, John.”

HOST: “Thank you.”

ARE YOU THE ONE STORYTELLER: “Now, after you were thrown into jail, I understand some of your followers came to visit you. How did that go?”

HOST: “Well . . . let me demonstrate.

Host walks back over to the other side of the stage. He picks up the PVC “jail bars.”

HOST: “There I was, sitting in jail. I was bored and feeling a bit down. I mean, I had important work to do, telling the world about Jesus, the Savior . . . and here I was, stuck in a prison cell.

“But then some of my followers came to see me. They told me some of the things that Jesus had been doing: the miracles, the teaching, the way that He seemed to love everybody—even people that OTHER people had forgotten. But I still needed to be sure. So I sent them back to Jesus to ask Him one thing.”

Host finishes folding the paper airplane with John’s question from Matthew 11:3 written on it. He flies it over to Storyteller.

STORYTELLER: (Catching the paper airplane) “Right. You asked Jesus this question.

(Reading from the paper airplane) “Are you the one who is supposed to come? Or should we look for someone else?” (Matthew 11:3, NIrV)

REPORT WHAT YOU HEAR STORYTELLER: (To Host) “Come on back over here, John. Let’s tell them how Jesus replied to your message.

Host puts away the jail bars, walks back to the interview area, and sits down.

HOST: “Yeah—it kind of blew my mind.”

STORYTELLER: “Jesus said:

Open the Bible to Matthew 11:4-6 (NIrV) and read.

“Go back to John. Report to him what you hear and see. Blind people receive sight. Disabled people walk. Those who have skin diseases are healed. Deaf people hear. Those who are dead are raised to life. And the good news is preached to those who are poor. Blessed are those who do not give up their faith because of me.”

“Wow. That’s powerful. (To Host) John, what did you think about that response?”

HOST: “Well, let me show you.

Host walks back over to the other side of the stage. He picks up the PVC “jail bars” again.

“Like I said, I already knew Jesus was the One. But now, I really KNEW it. I mean, I was still in jail. (Reference the jail bars.) That didn’t change. But what Jesus said made everything that I was dealing with not seem so bad. The Savior we were waiting for was here! And that’s all that really mattered.”

STORYTELLER: “Amazing. Thank you for sharing your story with us, John. (To audience) John the Baptist, everybody!”

Host waves and exits.

WRAPPING UP THE STORY STORYTELLER: “What Jesus said to John made it very clear—Jesus IS God’s Son. Only the Son of God could have the power to do the things Jesus was doing.

“Even though John was stuck in prison, God still loved him and cared about him. John wanted to be sure that Jesus was THE One that God was sending—the Savior. So he sent people to ask. Now he had his answer.

“John understood something important.

CG: Bottom Line Slide

[Bottom Line] “If you don’t understand something about God, ask.

“God is super amazing and super awesome. In fact, He’s SO amazing and SO awesome that there will definitely be some times when you don’t understand something about Him. You know what? That’s okay! When you don’t understand something about God, you do what John did. You can ask.

“Ask God to help you understand. Ask other people you know who follow God, like your parents or your Small Group Leader. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and learn more about God. You’ll never regret getting more knowledge about Him!

MEMORY VERSE CG: Blank Memory Verse Slide

“We’re learning a new verse this month to help us remember that wisdom comes from God. It’s Proverbs 2:6.

CG: Memory Verse Slide

"The Lord gives wisdom. Knowledge and understanding come from his mouth, Proverbs 2:6 (NIrV).

“You see—when we get to know more about God, He gives us knowledge and understanding. When you know what God cares about and how He cares about you, it can change how you look at everything else in your life.

“Now it’s time for you to head to Small Group and talk some more about how you can know God better!”

PRAY STORYTELLER: “Dear God, You are so big and so powerful. It’s amazing to think that we can spend our whole lives getting to know You! Sometimes we have questions about things we don’t understand. In those times, help us to do what John did. Help us to be brave enough to ask questions. Thank You for loving us and sending us Jesus so we can know more about You.
