Installation There are two options to install Crot Desktop:
First, if you already have MS SQL Server 2005 or higher installed in your system, you
may want to download an installation package that includes only core components (~8 Mb).
Keep in mind that during setup Crot gives system administrator’s rights for all users of the SQL
Server.
In other case you should download the full installation package, which includes MS SQL
Server 2005 Express Edition (~55 Mb). After downloading execute the installer and the wizard
will guide you through the setup process.

Crot usage Crot is software for plagiarism detection and prevention. Apart from this feature it could be used
as documents storage.
Crot allows you to perform two types of analysis:
Search within the local database of documents. For example you can keep your students’
essays to prevent local plagiarism.
Web search. Using Microsoft Live Search engine Crot searches the Internet to detect
plagiarism.
Let’s go through some basic usage scenarios.
Local search
Go to Start->Programs->Siberia soft->Crot Desktop. The login dialog will be presented. Choose
the server where you installed Crot database to and press Connect button.
After successful login you will be presented with the list of folders and documents in the Crot
database. Meantime it is empty.

Now let’s create new folder to store documents. Right click on the left pane and choose
New->Folder. Type in folder name (for example, “WRI 101 Essays”) and press Enter.
The next step is to add some documents to the database. Within the Crot folder (by default it is
Program Files->Siberia soft->Crot desktop) you can find several test documents (essay1.doc,
essay2.doc, essay3.doc). Documents essay1.doc and essay2.doc are taken from two Wikipedia
articles. The third one is combined from first two documents. To add documents into the system
(c) Crot: Anti plagiarism solutions
you have two options – first you can drag and drop them on the documents list (right pane), or go
to the Document menu and choose Add document... You will be presented with Add submission
document dialog box.
Choose document’s author. If you need to manage (add/edit/delete) authors, press Edit authors…
button. Type in document title and the file location, or press Browse button to find the file.
Optionally you can add some comment for the document. Press OK button.
To confirm that the documents have been imported properly, choose Document->View
document, or double click on a document in the documents list.
Now we are ready to make similarities report. In the documents list choose the document you
want to include in the report (you can press Ctrl-A to select all documents, or press and hold Ctrl

button to choose individual documents). And choose Document->Matches report…, or press
Ctrl-R.
You will be presented with the options for the matches report. You can choose to check selected
documents against all documents in the database (might be slow), documents downloaded from
the Internet (for this report we first need to perform web search), or only against documents from
particular folders.
Press OK to build matches report. This process can take some time (depends on you system’s
performance, number and size of the documents in the database), so be patient. Eventually the
matches report will be shown.

Here for each document selected for the report all documents with certain amount of common
parts (matches) are shown. In our example essay2.doc has 100% match with essay3.doc (because
essay3.doc is combined from essay1.doc and essay2.doc). You can change Show threshold value
and press refresh button to exclude insignificant matches. Optionally you can print this report or
export it to .pdf or .xls formats. In order to do this press the button with the printer icon.
Close this window. Now to confirm plagiarism double click on some document in the matches
report. You will be presented with side-by-side view.

Here on the left side you can find the list of common parts. Also side by side comparison is
presented with common parts highlighted in red. To save one of these two documents with
common parts numbers and highlighting, press save button on the toolbar.

Web search
Now let’s see the second feature of the system – web search. Close matches report and select the
documents you want to analyze against Internet. Keep in mind that this task could be very traffic
intensive. Choose Document->Web search… You will be presented with the wizard that will
guide you through the search process. Press Next to proceed to the Web Search Settings page.
You can leave default settings, or fine tune the process by increasing for example the number of
search and download threads if you have high speed Internet connection.
Press Next to proceed to the analysis page.
In order to start the search process press Start button.
(c) Crot: Anti plagiarism solutions
Search process can take certain amount of time depending on the speed of the Internet
connection and the size of the documents you have chosen to process.
You can switch to the Search details tab to see the search process details. If you stop the process,
you will have to start from the beginning.
After the search process finishes you can make a report that shows similar matches report now
with the web sources.
Again you can click on a document to see the side-by-side view.

Internet Compilation Report
The Matches Report could possibly include many similar documents (for example, multiple
WikiPedia mirrors). To obtain more concise view of the sources used in a document, you can
create Internet Compilation Report. This report selects minimum subset of sources that cover the
document.
In order to build this type of report, first perform Web Search. Then choose a document, right
click on item and from the pop up menu choose Internet compilation report… The result you can
see in the following figure:
