Even the most tech-savvy are hard pressed to describe the features of Thunderbolt 3 and USB-C interfaces in order to make a clear decision as to which one will best suit your needs. To help guide you like fog lights though bad weather, here’s a comparison breakdown.

2011-2013

What’s driving a bit of the confusion is the ports look identical and the only way to differentiate them visually is to look for the Lightning Bolt Thunderbolt logo imprint.

For the first two generations of Thunderbolt (2011) and Thunderbolt 2 (2013), Intel relied on the Mini DisplayPort connection. These iterations were primarily limited to Apple devices and not compatible with USB devices. That all changed in 2015 with Thunderbolt 3. This new generation used the much more versatile USB-C connection with the goal of interoperability and consistent performance across different computer and peripheral manufacturers.

But having a library of sounds was only the first part of the solution — accessing those sounds reliably during a live concert posed another set of challenges. “I build my sounds in layers and that’s very demanding on the instruments I’m playing and they’re all coming from software,” David said. “I needed to rely on streaming and storage to be quick enough and robust so that I could use it in a live environment and rely on it.”

DAVID ROSENTHAL’S OWC ESSENTIALS

When you hear your favorite Billy Joel tune, it’s easy to get swept away in the music. The melodies and harmonies all come together in layers and layers of finely crafted sounds. David Rosenthal is the man responsible for the legendary live synth sounds of Billy Joel’s music, and he’s also an OWC fan and customer.

He turned to OWC years ago as he looked to modernize his equipment and solve some unique challenges. “Billy Joel’s music spans 30 years and … my job is to capture all those sounds throughout all those years without having to drag around truckloads of gear to replicate it,” David said in a recent interview with OWC CEO and Founder, Larry O’Connor.

The first step in modernizing his sound collection was adopting Apple’s MainStage, “I use the Auto Sampler program to create software instruments of my old synth modules of which I have stacks and stacks,” David said. With that, he was able to condense decades of vintage synths and gear into a portable sound library.
