Founded in 1966, Historic Schaefferstown, Inc. is a non-profit educational organization dedicated to the culture and unique history of Schaefferstown and southeastern Lebanon County, PA. The Pennsylvania German and Swiss cultures which flourished here during the last few centuries are authentically presented among several historic sites, including the Alexander Schaeffer House and Farm, the Thomas R. The Pennsylvania German Experience Alexander Schaeffer House This 18th century house, a National Historic Landmark, is located on a scenic 85-acre farm south of the village. The site hosts living history cultural events and educational tours. Thomas R. Brendle Museum Named for a local resident and leader in the preservation of Pennsylvania German folklore, the museum displays cultural artifacts from the region. Located at 111 North Market St. Gemberling-Rex House The 18th century tavern once served thirsty travelers and villagers. Young Villagers Colonial Workshop July 20 through July 23For children entering grades 4–7, this engaging week is a fun way to learn about farm life in early America. Villagers will get hands-on experience with flax, fraktur art, tin-punching, bucket-making, wheat-weaving, rug-making, honey-making & more – plus enjoy guided nature walks.Hours Each Day: 10am to 3pm Workshop Fee: Members $45.00 / Non-members $65.00 To Register: Call 717-866-5242

WWII Weekend July 25 & 26The Farm becomes a World War II infantry encampment. Live battle re-enactments, displays, demos and tours of the bivouac areas. Restrooms and food available.Hours: Saturday 9am to 5pm / Sunday 9am to 3pm Admission: $5.00 Parking Fee Children under age 12 must be supervised. No pets, please.

Fall Harvest Fair September 19 & 20The Schaeffer Farm comes alive all weekend long with period artisans, crafts, cooking, cider-pressing, farm-life demonstrations, unique entertainment, and more! Hours: Saturday 10am to 5pm / Sunday 11:30am to 4:30pm Admission: $5.00. Members admitted free! Supervised children under age 12 admitted free. No pets, please.

Annual Meeting October 18Everyone is invited to this free event starting at 2pm. Join us at Brendle Museum’s Lower Level for a feature presentation, refreshments, and popular Silent Auction.

Christkindlmarkt & Tavern Lunch December 11 & 12On Friday afternoon and Saturday, enjoy artful gift shopping at Christkindlmarkt. On Saturday only, experience our Tavern Lunch. Reservations required for Lunch. Call 717-949-2244. Meal: $16 per person. Shopping: Friday 4pm to 8pm, and Saturday 9am to 3pm – at Brendle Museum’s Lower Level. Credit cards accepted.

Lunch: Saturday – Reservations accepted for sittings at 10am, 11am, Noon, 1pm, and 2pm, at the Gemberling-Rex House.

2020 EVENTSThe HSI Artisan Apprentice Program Today’s master artisans will help a new generation learn 18th and 19th century skills in crafts, cooking, toolmaking, and more. Apprentices age 8 through adult may enroll to learn about:

Learn Pa-German This 10-week class, led by language expert Alice Spayd, will introduce you to the unique Pa-German language. Choose either Saturday or Monday classes. For details on upcoming classes, contact HSI.

One-Day Workshops Try your hand at a fun early American craft – redware pottery, fraktur art, wool applique making, punched tin designs, and more. Enroll in a One-Day Workshop! Usually held on Saturdays during winter, it’s a great way for older children and adults to learn a traditional art form. For details on upcoming One-Day Workshops, please contact HSI. Class sizes are limited, so please register early.

Museum & Farm House Tours April 4 through October 2The Brendle Museum at 111 N. Market St., and Gemberling Rex House at 106 N. Market St., are open for guided tours from 1pm to 4pm every Tuesday, and on the first Saturday of each month (early April through early October).

The historic Alexander Schaeffer Farm House at 213 South Carpenter St. is open during festivals and by appointment.

Appointments and group tours are available all year round (weather permitting). Please call 717-949-2244 for details.Admission: Adults – $5.00 each. Members admitted free. Teens 12 to 17, seniors, & groups of 8 or more – $4.00 each Supervised children under age 12 admitted free. No pets, please.

Historical Presentations Throughout the year at the Brendle Museum, regional historians give informative, FREE presentations on topics of interest. Contact HSI for schedule. Donations appreciated.

Refresh the Farm Day April 4Calling All Volunteers! We need your hands-on help for several preseason must-dos – clean-ups, repairs, and more. We’ll start at 8:30am. Have fun while the work gets done!

Traditional Cherry Fair and Early American Craft Show June 27Since the 1700s, the Schaefferstown Cherry Fair has thrilled guests. Now held at the historic Schaeffer Farm, visitors can enjoy skilled artisans, entertainment, demonstrations, food, games and Forebay Gift Shop. Schaeffer House tour included.Hours: Saturday 10am to 5pm Admission: $5.00. Members admitted free. Supervised children under age 12 admitted free. No pets, please.

Afternoon Garden Tea July 12Tour the Schaeffer House and Heirloom Garden at the farm, enjoy a dry house demonstration, and learn about edible plants and organic gardening. Books, seeds and refreshments offered.Start Time: 2pm Suggested Donation: $5.00 per person
