Mayor Thomas LankeyTownship of Edison
Happy New Year, Homeowners & Residents,
I am pleased to present Edison Township’s 2020 Calendar of noteworthy dates, useful community information, and essential phone numbers.
I am also proud to say Edison Township — thanks to your participation in our recycling initiatives—we keep making progress to reduce our waste stream and become more sustainable. Thank you for your continued cooperation as we improve our recycling initiatives.
In addition to curbside recycling pickups, our Public Works Department has made it easier for residents to drop off household recyclables at Minnie Veal in North Edison. Our 471 Meadow Rd recycling location is currently under renovation and is scheduled to reopen during 2020.
Edison will again partner with Re-Purpose NJ to recycle textiles, like old clothing, coats, outerwear, handbags and cloth accessories. Textile recycling bins are at the following addresses around town:
20 New York Blvd. 745 New Durham Road Our public libraries7 Langstaff Avenue Minnie B. Veal Community Center
Edison will also host two “E-Recycling Events” this Fall & Spring at Papaianni Park. Your participation since 2017 has prevented hundreds of tons of old televisions, computers, printers and fax machines from going into landfills.
Our Township again received a state grant to continue to promote recycling education, in an effort to increase our towns recycling efforts. We continue to educate our residents with our storm water management awareness programs, which help to prevent fertilizers, pesticides, oils, detergents and animal waste from contaminating water sources, such as our creeks, rivers and ultimately the Raritan Bay.
Edison offers many ways for your family to stay in touch and learn more about our first-rate municipal services:
• Visit Edison’s website: www.edisonnj.org or download our mobile-friendly “myedisonnj” for your Apple and Android Smart Phone devices.
• Download our “Recycling Coach App” with up-to-the-minute details about sanitation, recycling and special collections.
• Tune in to Edison’s public access TV Channel 15.
• Subscribe to Edison’s NIXLE emergency notifications that offers traffic and emergency alerts.
• Sign up for Robo call notifications via our website at www.edisonnj.org
If you need help navigating Edison’s menu of services, please contact my office at (732) 248-7298. For assistance with sanitation, recycling and street maintenance, contact our Public Works Department at (732) 248-7288 or [email protected]. Questions regarding other township matters can be answered by calling 732-287-0900.

The Middlesex Greenway is a multi-use trail in New Jersey running from the town of Metuchen to Woodbridge, for a total length of 3 .5 miles (5 .6 km) . The mission of the Middlesex Greenway Coalition is to preserve a historic rail corridor as a rail-trial, and to connect it to a growing system of bike paths, and bike routes . The Middlesex Greenway evolved by converting the abandoned Lehigh Valley Railroad into a 3 .5-mile linear County Park Trail from Crows Mill Road near William Street, with a 10-foot wide asphalt surface, and ends in Metuchen west of Amboy and Lake avenues . There are 12 entry points along the trail’s length .

SOLUTIONS TO STORMWATER POLLUTION
Long appreciated for its great aesthetic, economic and recreation value, an array of human impacts now
threaten the health of the Raritan Bay
Pollution on streets, parking lots and lawns is washed by rain and snow melt into ditches, storm drains, streams,
rivers and ultimately, Raritan Bay.
The stormwater pollution is one of Raritan Bay’s greatest threats to clean water and the rivers and creeks that drain into it. Fertilizers, pesticides, motor oil, animal
waste, detergents, grass clippings, yard waste and litter are all examples of stormwater pollution.
Do not feed ducks, geese or otherforms of wildlife in public areas
Use newspaper, bags or pooperscoopers to pick up pet waste
Why does the Raritan Bay need our help?
Limit your use of fertilizers and pesticides
Perform a soil test to see ifyou need to fertilize
Use a drop spreader to applyfertilizer
Sweep up fertilizer frompavement and other hardsurfaces after applying
Do not apply fertilizers ifheavy rain is predicted
Follow the instructions on the bag label forcorrect application procedures
Try alternatives to pesticides, such as plantsthat repel insects
Properly store fertilizers and pesticides
Landscape your property using nativevegetation and plants
To learn more about the proper use of fertilizer go to:www.nj.gov/dep/healthylawnshealthywater
As a resident or business of the Raritan Bay,there are everyday actions you can take to help
reduce stormwater pollution
Place litter in trash receptacles and keep itout of storm drains
Reduce, reuse and recycle Participate in community cleanups
To learn more about storm water management visit www.nj.gov/dep/stormwater/
The Stormwater system is for the collection ofstormwater only, with limited exceptions.
Grass clippings, leaves and other yard waste shouldalways be placed in containers and never swept, raked, blown, or otherwise put in street
If such materials are in the street, they should beremoved
Uncovered dumpsters and other refuse containerscan cause wastes to reach natural water bodiesduring storm events
Actions You Can Take to Protect and Help Restore the Raritan River & Bay
CLEAN UP AFTER YOUR PET
DON’T FEED WILDLIFE
DON’T LITTER
KEEP A LID ON ALL DUMPSTERS & REFUSE CONTAINERS
DON’T PUT YARD WASTE IN STREET
DON’T PUT ANY WASTES IN STREET ORSTORMSEWERS
