Dr. Freeman Hrabowski, III PresidentUniversity of Maryland Baltimore County

Presented By: Dr. Freeman Hrabowski, IIIThe Empowered University: Shared Leadership, Culture Change, and Academic Success

Dr. Hrabowski’s keynote address on The Empowered University probes the way senior leaders, administrators, staff, faculty, and students facilitate academic success by cultivating an empowering institutional culture and broad leadership for innovation.

Dr. Freeman Hrabowski III, president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, is a renowned education leader who has received numerous awards, including being recognized as one of Time Magazine’s 2012 “Most Influential People in the World.” Hrabowski’s research and publications focus on science and math education, with special emphasis on minority participation and performance. With Hrabowski’s leadership, UMBC has become one of the nation’s leaders in African-American science and engineering postgraduate degrees. A native of Birmingham, Ala., Hrabowski participated in protests there as a child and attended the funerals (at which King spoke) of four girls killed in the 1963 Sixteenth Street Baptist Church bombing.

President Hrabowski is an author and has written several books, with the most recent being, The Empowered University (Johns Hopkins University Press). This book, as he describes, “Is about us” and is based on notes from months of campus focus groups about what UMBC is doing right and where it can improve. The book, written with Philip J. Rous, provost, and Peter H. Henderson, senior adviser to Hrabowski – could have remained an internal project, but it went public, based on the idea that it may help other institutions become similarly empowered, in Hrabowski’s words, to look themselves in the mirror.

Dr. Hrabowski and Central State University President Jack Thomas’ relationship stems back to 1998-99 when Dr. Thomas was a Fellow with the American Council on Education where Dr. Thomas had the opportunity to shadow and observe Dr. Hrabowski to gain exposure to leading a University. “It was important to select a keynote speaker who could give insight on where we’ve been with a keen understanding of where we are going and what it will take to get us there,” said Dr. Thomas.
