Brother Knights,
While we haven’t met in person as a council and planning for most activities is still side-lined for the time being, your council officers, directors and chairmen have been hard at work behind the scenes.
Brother Tony Saturno has been working on the Bingo program by answering questions from the Ontario Charitable Gaming Association to help our council get a “share” of the proceeds be-ing earned during the limited reopening of Delta Bingo. Although no vol-unteers are allowed back at this time, we hope to be one of the charities that is eligible to receive a share.
Our Worthy Chancellor Jim is currently working on the Charity Lottery ticket sales. The ticket sales are extremely important to us this year as our normal revenue generating activities such as bingo, the dance and car wash have been put on hold. Tickets are available for you to sell our buy. Brother Jim or myself will gladly deliver the tickets right to your home if you wish. Please see the additional information on the lottery in the Chan-cellor’s report. Brothers, keep this a secret, because ticket sales have been slow all over, the chances of winning should be good, but you didn’t hear this from me!
Due to the restrictions on social gatherings, we’ve had to cancel our An-nual Awards and Recognition BBQ. During this annual event, we usually present our members and their spouses who achieved a special wedding anniversary milestone with a Wedding Anniversary Certificate of Com-mendation signed by our Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson. At this event, we also celebrate Knights who have achieved service milestones with a Certificate of Recognition for their years of service. In lieu of the BBQ, I have been personally contacting members congratulating them on their achievement and either hand delivering or mailing their certificates.

Lastly, our council has received its plaque for the Food for Families program we completed last fraternal year. A picture of the plaque is shown below. The requirements for this program are to donate 1000lbs of food to a local food bank or make a donation of $500. Food for Fami-lies is a reimbursement program so when a council completes the requirements, Supreme re-imburses the council $100. Through last year’s structured charity vote we donated $500 to Oakville Fare Share Food Bank and received $100 back from Supreme.
Our good works did not stop there. Once we re-ceived the $100 back from Supreme, we topped it up by another $900 and sent yet another donation to Oakville Fare Share in July as part of our pandemic response to the communi-ty.
With schools reopening, it almost feels like we are starting to get back to some sort of normalcy this September. However, with the up-tick in Covid infec-tions, the situation re-mains quite concerning. Stay vigilant Brothers and be safe, it’s not over yet!

Deputy Grand Knight’s Message
Fellow Brothers, I hope this finds all of you and your families well. The summer has come to an end and the schools are all about to re-open. This will bring some normalcy back to our lives. The teachers and students will have to adapt to a new way of learning. Our council is still having virtual meetings on the 2nd Tuesday of the month (Officers Executive meeting) which everyone is able to attend. Our membership meeting is on the 4th Tuesday of the month and everyone is encouraged to attend that as well. Please consider logging on and participating. I hope to see you there. Our Worthy Lecturer, Scott Bell, will be introducing a 12-part video series called “Into the Breach”. This is produced by The Knights of Columbus and it is targeted towards men. It will answer the question of what it means to be a man and how to live as a man in today's world. Please stay tuned for more information on this wonderful initiative. It will be open to all men of our parish. Please call on Scott Bell if you are able to assist him. I would like to thank Brother Anthony Bastiampillai for taking on the role of Faith Program Director. A big thank you goes to Brother Steve Lee for filling this role for the last Frater-nal year. He had to vacate due to family obligations. Please continue to pray for all of our front-line workers. God Bless, Vivat Jesus, Mario Peluso (DGK)

Hello Friends,
We hope you are all keeping well. COVID-19 has caused many restrictions, but
thankfully, it has not prevented us from creatively being able to offer an evening
virtual Bible Study. You are all invited to attend, and to share this email with any-
one who you feel may wish to join us. This offer is not limited to just our Parish.
This Bible Study will begin on Monday, September 28th, 2020 and run for elev-
en weeks. The “gathering” portal will open at 7:00p.m., and the session will offi-
cially begin at 7:15p.m. with a prayer, and ending at 9:00p.m.
Bible Study: The Bible and The Early Church Fathers
Dates: Sept. 28 (Intro & Session 1), Oct. 5, 19 & 26, Nov. 2, 9, 16, 23 & 30, and
Jan. 11 & 18. (Please note the later than usual start date due to this new format,
and that there will not be classes on Thanksgiving Monday or during Advent. This
Bible Study will conclude in January, with a new one being announced then.)
Details: The workbook is $35.00. Details for ordering the workbook are included
when you register. You will be able to pick up your copy at the parish after the
5:00p.m. Mass on Saturday, September 26th or after the 9:00a.m. or 11:00a.m.
Masses on Sunday, September 27th. Please note, you can pay cash (but must have
the exact amount) or by cheque (payable to “Branches”).
Registration: Each person who would like to be part of this Bible Study will need
to register by clicking on the word “link” at the bottom of this email. If there are
two people in one household, a workbook can be shared if you wish. Both members
of the same household need to register BUT only one person needs to request the
workbook when registering. Please register by September 23rd.
Format: The Bible Study will take place via Zoom. Closer to September 28th, eve-
ryone who has registered on-line will receive an email with the link to the Zoom
weekly Bible Study sessions. Each week we will log on and open the portal for
7:00p.m. to "gather" and the opening prayer will be at 7:15p.m. We will be stream-
ing the Bible Study video on Zoom and then we will move into our smaller groups on
-line for discussion and responses to the workbook questions.
Please see this link for further details. We have plenty of room, and all are wel-
come. We are looking forward to seeing everyone virtually!

Getting to Know…Brother Ken Lesperance
Brother Ken Lesperance has been a member of the Knights of Columbus since 2003 when he
joined Marian Council 3881. While Brother Ken is very busy these days serving as the Recorder
of our Council, his previous involvement has him referring to himself as a “Silent Knight”. That
reference, however, should be dispelled once you get to know him through this profile.
Brother Ken was born in Penetanguishene (Penetang) Ontario where he lived his first 3 years,
and still has family there. Brother Ken has 4 older siblings, though sadly the youngest of them
died at birth. One year later Ken’s parents adopted a child who is 9 years younger than Brother
Ken.
When Brother Ken was three his father took a job with the Ford Motor Company and the fami-
ly moved to southwest Oakville. He attended St. Joseph’s Catholic Elementary School and the
family were Parishioners at St. Dominic’s where Ken was an Altar Server. The nearby Kinoak
Hockey Arena provided the venue for Brother Ken to enjoy watching Oakville Rep Hockey
Games.
After Grade 6, Brother Ken’s father was transferred by Ford to Pointe Claire Quebec on Mon-
treal’s West island. The family stayed for three and a half years, and while there Brother Ken
attended St. Thomas Catholic Secondary School. He vividly remembers the constant French vs.
English rivalries and their associated rumbles. At that time Parish Masses were held in the
school Gym.
The Lesperance family moved back to Oakville, and Brother Ken attended T.A. Blakelock to
complete his Secondary education. During this time, Brother Ken’s parents divorced. His father
remarried, resulting in Brother Ken having 7 more siblings.
Beginning at age 16 Brother Ken got more involved once back at St. Dominic’s, and also got to
know and admire the Pastor, Fr. Peter Coughlin. Ken also had some gainful employment,
cutting the grass at the Rectory. During those days at St. Dominic’s and up to the age of 20,
Brother Ken got involved with C.O.R.E. He began attending their Retreats, and also became in-
volved in CYO (Catholic Youth Organization), eventually serving as President and Co-Spiritual
Director.
Brother Ken began his post-secondary education at the University of Guelph, studying Biology
and Fisheries Management. This helped him land a job for the next 4 summers working for the
Ministry of Fisheries and Oceans in Sea Lamprey Control. Sea Lampreys are an invasive eel like
fish and are also known as suckerfish. However, after that first year Brother Ken decided to
Knight News, Council 14446 Mary Mother of God Parish September 2020
Page 11
drastically switch paths and ended up graduating with a Major Degree in Economics, and a Mi-
nor in Math.
Brother Ken, Lourdes, and Paul Lesperance at Christmas 2018.
While in University Brother Ken attended a Vocations Retreat. At that time Rev. Msgr. Roger
Formosi was the Director of Vocations for Diocese of Hamilton. Ultimately Ken determined
the Priesthood was not the path he was going to take and says that he is quite happy with
his chosen Vocation of Marriage to Lourdes!
After graduating from University Brother Ken entered the world of Banking, first with BMO,
then Central Guaranty Trust and finally TD Canada Trust where he retired in 2018. During his
3 years at Central Guaranty Trust he had occasion to visit RBC on a regular basis as they
served as the cheque processor for his Bank. It was here that Ken met Lourdes. One day,
while at RBC on Bank business, and with Lourdes out of earshot, the other ladies in the office
Knight News, Council 14446 Mary Mother of God Parish September 2020
Page 12
mentioned to Ken that Lourdes did not have a date for the upcoming RBC Christmas Party.
Brother Ken quickly replied that he would be delighted to attend with her! In order to avoid
any awkwardness at such a public event, the pair arranged to have a couple of dates before
the big event. And the rest, as they say, is history!
In September of 1990, Ken and Lourdes were married at St. Michaels Parish Church in Oakville,
by Fr. Peter Coughlin even though they were living in Toronto at the time. In 1991 Brother Ken
and Lourdes welcomed their son Paul and moved to Oakville when he was one month old.
Paul is also a graduate of the University of Guelph and is currently working for TD Bank as an
Analyst. In September2020 Paul became engaged to Jiannine. Congratulations!
It was PGK Henry Thissen who invited fellow Usher Ken to join Marian Council which he did,
and this is the start of what Brother Ken refers to as his time as a “Silent Knight”. Brother Ken
also knew Brother Henry from when they served together as Cub leaders for their sons. Broth-
er Ken became an Usher as soon as he began attending Mary Mother of God Parish and con-
tinues to this day. Once a new Council was being started at Mary Mother of God Parish, PGK
Brother Henry persuaded him to transfer over.
Ken was still very much involved in his career over the next decade meaning he had little time
to contribute as a member. A very bad car accident 10 years ago where Brother Kens car was
forced off the road, resulted in a serious neck injury that made it difficult for him to attend
meetings.
In the last few years however, Brother Ken has contributed to a number of regular Council Ac-
tivities, including coordinating the Roses for Life and CARS Raffle program and participating
with many other events and activities. This past Columbian year Brother Ken was elected to
the position of Recorder on the Council Executive and was recently re-elected. He has also
been begun serving as Communications Director, which has been quite a challenge during the
COVID 10 Pandemic.
Brother Ken has always enjoyed sports both as a participant and fan, playing Golf, Tennis, Soft-
ball, Hockey and Lacrosse while growing up, and is a loyal Toronto Maple Leaf’s Fan. Originally
a Montreal Expos Fan, Ken now enjoys watching Baseball together with Lourdes. They are very
devoted Toronto Blue Jays Fans, attending a number of games each season and watching the
rest on Television. Lourdes and Ken try to attend a Blue Jays game 'on the road' each summer.
So far, they have been to New York, Boston, Cleveland, and Baltimore. They were planning to
attend Pittsburg this season "until things unexpectedly changed".
Knight News, Council 14446 Mary Mother of God Parish September 2020
Page 13
Brother Ken enjoys staying active and spends 2 hours each morning doing various combina-
tions of cycling and walking outdoors, or on a treadmill. He periodically runs into Brother
Gabe Salvatore while cycling but has yet to cause serious injury.
Brother Ken’s other love is Travel, which he and Lourdes have been able to do more of in the
last 10 years. Two trips so far have been made to the Philippines, where Lourdes is originally
from. They have a membership with the Baha Principe Resort and enjoy cruises, the most re-
cent one being a Mediterranean cruise in Europe. Another favorite trip was when Lourdes and
Ken spent 2 weeks on two of the islands in Hawaii for their 25th Anniversary. Another thing
they enjoy doing together is travelling to attend concerts all over North America. Destinations
so far have included New York State and Las Vegas.
So, Brother Ken is not so “Silent” after all. Remember it is not just what we do within the
“Council” that makes us Active Knights. Its everything we do… for our Families, our Parish, and
our Community.

September Structured Charity Vote –
A message from your Charity Committee
Brothers
The Charity Committee have concluded accepting charity nominations for the September Structured Charity vote. The deadline for nominations was September 1st.
See the final list below of the nominated charities. The charity vote will be held at the Sep-tember Membership meeting.
In May of this year, the council approved the follow awards for the September Structured Charity Vote:
$3,000 Gold, One (1) Award
$2,000 Silver, Two (2) Awards
$1,000 Bronze, Three (3) Awards
In all, 6 awards supporting 6 charities for total $10,000.
At the close of nominations on September 1st, there were 8 nominated charities, all from internal sources. This year as we did last year, we will be supporting 6 charities through 6 awards as noted above. Each Knight will have up to 6 votes to cast but can only vote once for a single charity. Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the nomi-nated charities, the voting procedures and the information provided on the charities in the table below so you can make informed choices. The relevant voting procedures found in the council’s Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) are outlined below:

4) All questions and concerns must be addressed to the satisfaction of the Grand Knight prior to proceeding to a vote.
5) Ballots with all nominated charities shall be counted and passed out by the Warden to Council 14446 members only.

(e.g. if the Council has chosen to select 4 Charities in the next frater-nal year to support, then each attending Knight will have up to 4 Charity votes. He may elect to select only one Charity on his ballot, but may vote for a single Charity only one time.)
