THE MATCHUPWildcats Storylines ...A NEW RIVALRY: Saint Ignatius and Archbishop Hoban’s football programs offer a rich history. The Wildcats have won 11 Division I State Championships, while the Knights have won five State Championships. Hoban has won five titles in the last six years and is coming off an 11-0 season, defeating Massillon Washington, 35-6 in the Division II State Championship. The game has come down to one possession in the previous two match-ups between the Cats and Knights. In the most recent game in 2019, the Wildcats illustrated the biggest comeback in program history after trailing 35-10 in the third quarter.

UNSTOPPABLE MARTY: This season, the senior back is averaging two touchdowns a game as Marty Lenehan’s total sits at eight touch-downs. Lenehan last week carried the ball 12 times for 71 yards and two touchdowns. Lenehan sparked the offense in the second quarter last week vs. Euclid on a 35-yard touchdown run to give the Wildcats their first lead of the night. Lenehan continues to be the catalyst of the Saint Ignatius offense.

MEN UP FRONT: The Wildcats’ two returning starters on the offensive line are seniors Ashton Montgomery and Brian Keane, who anchor the left and right tackles this year. Looking at the guards, senior Joe Ryland and junior Dominic Ference lock down the left and right guard spots. Junior Pat Lavelle is the center for the Wildcats offense for 2021. Senior guard Joe Ryland will return vs. Hoban after missing last week due to an inury. The O-line has been an integral part of opening the holes for Lenehan and Georges to succeed in the run game and will look to continue that in week five.

RUN STOPPERS: The Wildcats defensive front put on another gem last week vs. Euclid. The rush defense held the Panthers in the nega-tive at -6 yards rushing in the win. The defensive line has been on a tear to begin the season, forcing teams to stray away from the run game; the leadership of Peter Chalhoub, Thomas Wasinski and Will Robinson continues to put the Wildcats in a position to win ball games.

LINEBACKER LEGION: Linebacker coach Ryan Franzinger’s men have played an aggressive brand of football in the first four weeks. Senior captain Christopher Aerni has been at the forefront of the defense this season, getting involved in what seems like every play. Blase Mastrianni achieved his first sack at the varsity level last week against Euclid. Gavin Berger has been an excellent off-the-edge pass rusher for the Cats defense with rotational help with Max Palinski.

TALIAK LAND: Griffin Taliak has been a force in the defensive sec-ondary this season for the Wildcats. Taliak blocked and recovered a punt against Euclid, along with getting a sack from his safety posi-tion. Taliak also blocked a PAT in the Wildcats week three win against Mount St. Joseph (MD). Taliak’s defensive plays give opposing of-fenses fits.

OH CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN: The captains for the 2021 season are #22 Marty Lenehan, #34 Christopher Aerni, #95 Peter Chalhoub and #99 Thomas Wasinski.

A LOOK BACK ...Sept. 13, 2019

Wildcats Comeback vs. Hoban Trailing the Knights 35-10 in the third quarter,

all hope seemed lost for Saint Ignatius. But

the Wildcats never lost faith. In the greatest

comeback in Saint Ignatius Football history,

the Wildcats fired out on a 32-0 run. A last-

ditch Hoban effort fell flat, and the Wildcats

ended Hoban’s 31-game winning streak.

Quarterback Griffin Hanna ‘20 went for it all

on a pass downfield to Connor Cmiel ‘20, Run-

ning a fly route, Cmiel came open and Hanna

found him in stride. Cmiel caught it easily and

strode into the end zone, giving the Wildcats

the lead for the first time since 4:04 in the

first quarter, at 42-35, with two minutes left.

Hoban would score on the ensuing kickoff

return for a 96 yard touchdown. The Knights

decided to attempt a 2-point conversion for

the win. Running behind his big uglies, Hamm

looked to sneak up the middle. But linebacker

Michael McNamara ‘20 stopped him, securing

the Wildcats 42-41 comeback win over the

Archbishop Hoban Knights on September 13,

2019.

CRABLE FILE: Jayvian Crable is the junior signal-caller for the Archbishop Hoban Knights in 2021. Crable is a transfer from Massillon. Crable has spent his entire life around the game of football. His father is Shawn Crable, an NFL linebacker with the New England Patriots and New York Jets from 2008 to 2010. Hoban premiers a run-heavy offense; however, that opens the passing lanes for Crable to do damage to a defensive secondary.

BIG UGLIES: The Knights have an impressive run game and it starts with the boys upfront, an experienced group of talent. Colton Burkhart, Drew Holt, Michael Noe, Keyshawn Haynes and Keon Johnson lead the way for the offensive line for Hoban. Johnson is a transfer from Stow and the Knights have dominated the run game early in the season.

SPERLING’S SPEED: Running out of the backfield for the Knights is Lamar Sperling. Last week against Kettering Archbishop Alter, the junior back rushed for two touchdowns in the 27-14 win. Sperling’s career-high came in the double-overtime thriller against the Walsh Jesuit Warriors. Sperling rushed for 272 yards and three touchdowns while toting the rock 42 times in the 35-34 victory over the Warriors. Sperling is the straightforward workhorse in the Hoban offense and the Knights rely on his shifty ability out of the backfield to spark the offense. Sperling is tremendous, shaking tackles and fighting for extra yards. Senior Markim McKinnie will see carries as a rotational back for the Knights.

FEROCIOUS FOUR: The front four feature Jason Martin III, Bryce Sisak, Jordan Sewell and Grant Thompson. The two defensive tackles for the Knights get off the ball well as Martin and Sisak, make life difficult for an offensive line to slow them down. Martin and Sisak are the anchors on the Knights’ defense that make them an admirable defense. A significant storyline heading into week five for Saint Ignatius will be how the offensive line can slow down Hoban’s defensive line.

KEPLER’S PICK: Senior Caleb Kepler was a force in Hoban’s week four win against Kettering Archbishop Alter. He would deliver a significant blow on the road with a 50-yard pick-six against Alter last Friday night in the 27-14 victory. Kepler is joined alongside Jermaine James and David Vincent in the linebacking core. The talented play from the Hoban defensive front opens the game up for linebackers such as Kepler to get an interception to steal the momentum away from an opponent.

BY THE NUMBERS/ WILDCATS TO WATCH

Marty Lenehan has had great success in the first four weeks of the season and that starts with the men upfront. Ashton Montgomery holds down the left tackle position for the Wildcat offense. A three-year varsity letter award winner, Montgomery is a crucial veteran for the offensive line. The Wildcats rushing game has been tremendous to open the 2021 season and Montgomery has been a big piece clearing the way for Joey Georges and Lenehan. Montgomery also plays the all-important role of protecting the blind side of Joey Pfaff. Hoban brings a powerful defense into week five and Montgomery’s leadership will have to pave the way for the Wildcats.

Christopher Aerni has earned his role as the starting middle linebacker for the Wildcats. Aerni continues to work to make himself and the team better week in and week out. The senior captain has excellent play recognition and reacts well to an opponent’s offense. Aerni is a part of the front seven that do a fantastic job preventing the rush for oppo-nents. Last week vs. Euclid, the Wildcats held the Panthers in the negative on the ground game. This has been business as usual for the Wildcats as they have shown they can stop the rush. Aerni will be critical in week five against Hoban. Hoban has an excellent rushing game with Lamar Sperling out of the backfield. Aerni and the front seven must be prepared to limit the Knights.

MID SEASON TILT FOR THE WILDCATS AGAINST THE KNIGHTSGAME PREVIEW

The Saint Ignatius Wildcats are back at the .500 mark after a 44-14 victory against the Euclid Panthers on the road. The running game has been there all sea-son long for the Wildcats, but in week four, the passing game seems to of found its rhythm after senior quar-terback Joey Pfaff threw three touchdowns in the win. Senior Patrick Tompkins was the recipient of all three touchdowns thrown by Pfaff.

“I think we have been running the ball fine and we will continue that,” says Head Football Coach Chuck Kyle ‘69. “One of the goals we had going into last week and what we will continue to focus on is throwing percentage.”

After missing week three against Mount St. Joseph (MD), Pfaff, who returned from injury, threw for 148 yards on 11-20 passing, throwing one interception. Pfaff looks to continue to grow the completion percentage into week five.

SAINT IGNATIUS OFFENSE VS. HOBAN DEFENSEMarty Lenehan continues his tremendous season

with two more touchdowns in last week’s game vs. Euclid. The senior, now with eight touchdowns, will look to be a force against a strong Hoban defense. The Knights’ defense features a phenomenal defensive line and their two tackles of Jason Martin III and Bryce Sisak cause issues for any offensive line.

“Their front four is aggressive, especially the two tackles that can get off the ball well,” explains Kyle. “They are the keys to the front. because as a result, they clear the way for the linebackers, I think that is a big challenge for the offensive line.”

The offensive line for the Wildcats has played lights out in the first four games of the season. They are pav-ing the way for Lenehan and Joey Georges out of the backfield. Moreover, the Wildcats pass protection has improved with each game, protecting Pfaff and Pierce Spencer in their quarterback position. , the Cats will gain Joe Ryland back for week five.

“Field position and time of possession we have been good with this season,” says Kyle. “We are hitting the halfway point of the season and we want to see a bal-anced attack and percentage passing for me is a part of that goal.”

Tompkins shined in the week four victory vs. Euclid and has been Pffaf’s number one target in the 2021 season. Tompkins caught five passes for 91 yards against the Panthers last week and will look to con-tinue being a force for the Wildcat offense against Hoban.

The linebacking core for the Knights includes Caleb Kepler, Jermaine James and David Vincent. Kepler had a pick-six in the 27-14 win vs. Kettering Archbishop Alter last Friday night.

SAINT IGNATIUS DEFENSE VS. HOBAN OFFENSEIt was another great showing by the defense vs.

Euclid as they would hold Euclid to negative six yards rushing in the 44-14 win. The defensive line has done its job of forcing teams to become one-dimensional.

“We have had a bigger defensive line over the years, but this defensive line is rapid and strong,” explains Kyle. “That has made the difference; there is a great amount of depth at those positions.”

The starters are Peter Chalhoub, Will Robinson and Thomas Wasinski with rotational help from Ryan Boomer, Joey Kause and Eugene Gibbons. The defen-sive line is fresh and looking to make a play on the ball. The defensive line will have their work cut out for them vs. a talented Hoban offense.

The feature back for the Knights is Lamar Sperling. Sperling achieved a career-high in rushing against Walsh Jesuit on September 3 as he carried the ball 42 times for 272 yards. Sperling has shown explosive abil-ity out of the backfield, making defenders miss in the open field.

“They have a running back that can take it to the house and you have to wrap him up,” Kyle explains. “They make defenses overcommit on the run to open up the passing game, so this will be a good challenge for our guys.”

In the Saint Ignatius secondary, the Wildcats are seeking another big game from senior safety Griffin Taliak. Taliak seems to be involved in every play, even on special teams when it comes to blocking a punt or PAT. Taliak can also be used in a safety blitz as last week vs. Euclid he got into the backfield for a sack.

“He has amazing confidence and you need that in the safety position,” says Kyle. “He takes that extra reach and steps in the passing game, but he is also helping our rush defense.”

Hoban’s quarterback is Jayvian Crable, who is a transfer from Massillon. Crable has the prominent play ability with the phenomenal run game that Hoban features.

SPECIAL TEAMSThe Cats punt return team forced a fumble, a block

and safety last week against Euclid. Joe Norris recov-ered a Panther fumble and Taliak blocked and recov-ered a punt in the second half. The Cats forced a safety when a Panthers snap when over their punter’s head for a safety.

“We have to win the special teams battle,” empha-sizes Kyle. “Two solid teams are coming together and sometimes it is special teams play that can determine the result of the game.”

The last two meetings between the Wildcats and Knights have come down to a one-possession game and week five will be a mid-season tilt as the Wildcats look to get a game above .500.

EUCLID GAMETompkins’ Three Touchdowns Lifts Wildcats

Over EuclidBy Danny Gibel ‘22 Back on the road, the Wildcats traveled to Euclid High School on Friday night to take on the Panthers. These two programs have an extensive history dating back to the 1980s, including the first-ever nationally televised high school football game in 1989. After winning their first game against Mount Saint Joseph (MD), the Wildcats came into the match-up looking to win back-to-back games and get to the .500 mark for the first time this season. In the first quarter, both defenses forced punts on the first two drives. Then, starting at their four-yard line, Euclid got on the board first. Panthers quarterback Deonte Rucker threw a short pass to wide receiver Jakobi Laster for a 97-yard touchdown with 7:15 left in the first. Later in the quarter, the Panthers would fall victim to a defensive takeaway by the Cats. Forcing a fumble, Joe Norris, the senior safety/cornerback, gave the Cats’ offense excellent field position to start their drive. The Wildcats would drive down the field and eventually capitalized on the Panthers’ mistake as senior Marty Lenehan rushed into the endzone from three yards out to even the score at 7-7. Pfaff wasted no time airing it out and finding senior Patrick Tompkins in the endzone to put the Cats up 21-7. Euclid would fumble at their 20-yard line and junior linebacker Patrick Martin recovered the ball on the ensuing kickoff. Martin’s fumble recovery set up another Pfaff touchdown pass, dropping it right in over the defender. Tompkins caught his second touchdown of the night, which gave the Wildcats a 28-7 lead heading into halftime. In the first five minutes of the second half, the Wildcats and the Panthers punted several times before the Cats could break through. With 7:53 remaining in the third, Wildcat senior safety Griffin Taliak used his speed to block and recover the punt. Then, on the second play of the next drive, Pfaff was able to roll out to his left and launch the ball downfield, right into the hands of Tompkins for his third touchdown catch of the night. After the Tompkins touchdown, Euclid would start on offense at the 20-yard line. The Panthers’ drive would go for negative six yards as the defense was right there to force another Euclid punt. This time, a bad snap caused punter Aidan Turos to, in an attempt to stop the Wildcats from scoring a touchdown with the excellent field position, kicked the ball out of the back of his endzone for a safety, making the score 37-7 Saint Ignatius. After the Euclid safety, the kickoff was returned to the 40-yard line, giving the Wildcats excellent field position. Then, Joey Georges would rush to the outside and race up the sideline for a 38-yard touchdown on second and seven. Georges’ second touchdown of the season and the following extra point by senior Zeb Eldridge, who was a perfect six for six on extra points, gave the Cats a 44-7. The final drive was highlighted by second and third-string Wildcats entering the game and driving Billups back behind the line of scrimmage for a considerable loss of yardage. Euclid would eventually get down inside the red zone and Billups would rush in for a three-yard touchdown. Saint Ignatius defeated Euclid by a final score of 44-14 after getting contributions from all over the stat sheet. The 44 point mark was the highest point total of the season. With the win, the Football Cats improved their record to 2-2 on the season after winning back-to-back games. Coach Chuck Kyle ’69 and Wildcats now set their sights on the 3-1 Archbishop Hoban Knights, the 2020 Division II State Champions. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. next Saturday at Byers Field in Parma.
