Heather Dyche joined the Lobo family in 2015 as the head women’s soccer coach at The University of New Mexico.

The Albuquerque native owns a 79-43-13 overall record and a 49-21-7 mark in Mountain West play. Under her guidance, UNM has won two regular season titles and twice has advanced to the Mountain West Tournament Championship game. Overall she has coached 22 All-Mountain West selections (11 First Team, 11 Second Team), 10 All-MW Tournament Players, three All-Region players, six CoSIDA Academic All-District selections, one CoSIDA Academic All-America, 12 Mountain West Players of the Week, 123 Mountain West All-Academic selections and 109 Mountain West Scholar-Athletes.

The 2020 season saw records fall as UNM advanced to the second round of the NCAA College Cup and winning its first outright Mountain West title since 2011. The program went 10-2-1 under Dyche as she was named the Mountain West’s Coach of the Year. The Lobos blasted their way into the record books by averaging 2.38 goals per game (scoring 31 in just 13 games). The team turned in a 0.90 goals against average, the lowest in seven years, and UNM was nearly unstoppable in the regular season, allowing just three goals in 10 games leading up to the title game. The Lobos of 2020 advanced to the NCAA Tournament after a thrilling 3-2 overtime win over San Diego State in front of a capacity crowd in Albuquerque. UNM then got past Navy in the opening round, winning 4-2 in penalties after tying 1-1 in regulation.

Gwen Maly was one of five players to earn First Team All-Mountain West honors, and she became the first women’s soccer player in the history of the Mountain West to be named Mountain West Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the highest individual honor bestowed to a student-athlete in the league.

The 2019 season saw the Lobos go 11-8-1 overall and finish 6-4-1 in the Mountain West, good for fourth place. The Lobos for the second straight season placed five players on the All-Mountain West squad and it gave UNM 36 wins over the previous three seasons, the second-best three-year win total in school history. One of those wins was a 1-0 season opening win over No. 22 Texas Tech at the UNM Soccer Complex, UNM’s first win over a ranked opponent since 2010.

Dyche’s 2018 Lobo team set a program record for goals scored with 45 and posted second-best program marks in assists (33) and points (123). In terms of individual player accolades, three standouts received All-Pacific Region honors from the United Soccer Coaches, which was a program record. From the Mountain West, the 2018 team had five honorees, three of which were first team selections.

In her first season, Dyche became the third coach in Lobo women’s soccer history to begin her career with double-digit victories by going 10-8-2 in 2015. That record included a 7-3-1 record in Mountain West play and a run to MW Tournament semifinals.

Along with leading the Lobos, Dyche traveled to Brazil to assist the U.S. Women’s National Team during the 2016 Summer Olympic Games – assisting with scouting and analyzing opponents. She also served as an assistant coach for the U-18 U.S. Women’s National Team’s trip to Australia in the summer of 2017.

Dyche is also a coach, instructor and scout with the United States Soccer Federation (USSF). Dyche is an assistant coach for the US Youth National Team U14 and U15 Girls. There, Dyche is granted the opportunity to identify and work with the most talented U15 soccer players in the country and the core of the US team that competed in the 2018 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup. She also serves on the USSF instructional staff, instructing USSF B- and USSF C-licensed national coaching schools across the country.

Dyche’s footprint at the elite level spans past the national stage, as she has also assisted for national teams from Antigua, St. Kitts and Nevis and Grenada.

Dyche serves on the instructional staff for The Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF). As the

only female of the CONCACAF educational board, Dyche teaches C, D and grassroots courses in order while developing and writing content for all women’s grassroots programs.

Dyche is a US Youth Region IV ODP head coach. There, she coaches the team at Olympic Development Interregional events and identifies top players in the region to participate in the Olympic Development Program Regional Team.

Finally, she is also the co-founder and head coach of LEAD Academy (Leadership and Empowerment through Athletic Development Soccer) – an all-girls soccer leadership training school located here in Albuquerque.

Dyche’s New Mexico soccer roots are as extensive as her résumé is.

Prior to joining the University of New Mexico, Dyche was a presenter at the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/U.S. Youth National Conference in 2013 and at the U.S. Soccer National Symposium in 2011.

ten years in waitingFor the first time since the 2011 season, the Lobos were crowned the Mountain West Tournament Champions. After winning the regular season championship this season, New Mexico earned the No. 1 seed. Winning the tournament was no easy task though, as the Lobos went into double overtime to defeat Utah State, 2-1, in the semifinals, and overtime to take down Boise State, 2-1, in the championship match.

After the conclusion of the match, the conference announced the All-Tournament team, which featured four Lobos (Jadyn Edwards, Karlee Maes and Alexa Kirton). Zaria Katesigwa was named Tournament MVP.

excelling off the fieldBoth Jadyn Edwards and Emily Johnson were named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team on Nov. 11th. Not only is Edwards the Lobos’ star offensive player and Johnson the star goalkeeper, they are also highly successful in their studies.

scouting the cougarsNo. 4 seed BYU earned an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament with a 1-0 double overtime win over the Pepperdine Waves in the West Coast Championships. The Cougars hold a 13-4-1 record overall and 8-1 in WCC play. Mikayla Colohan leads the team with 13 goals scored, 13 assists and 106 shots this season. Cassidy Smith has allowed 11 goals and recorded 42 saves in 18 games started for the Cougars.

coincidence or strategy? The Lobos’ win over Utah State in the semifinals was strangely similar to their win over USU in the regular season. In the regular season, New Mexico defeated the Aggies, 2-1, shortly into the second overtime period and both goals were scored by the same Lobo, Molly Myers. In the semifinal match on Thursday, the Lobos defeated the Aggies, 2-1, just minutes into double overtime and both goals were scored by the same Lobo, Zaria Katesigwa.

mw newcomer of the year shines brightZaria Katesigwa was named Newcomer of the Year by the conference for a reason and she continues to showcase her abilities in every matct. The freshman Albuquerque native is tied for most goals (10) in the conference with her teammate Jadyn Edwards. She also has the most game winning goals in the conference with four this season. Katesigwa has been an asset on and off the field for the Lobos this season.

Hard work pays offThe Lobos have worked through the most intense matchups to get better every match and get great results, showcasing their perseverance and determination. They ended the regular season with an outstanding 7-2-2 MW record. New Mexico earned the outright regular season champion title by just 1 point better than Fresno State. The team earned the No. 1 seed in the tournament.

best in the mountain westSeven Lobos earned Mountain West All-Conference or individual awards at the conclusion of the regular season. Jadyn Edwards, Emily Johnson, Karlee Maes and Molly Myers earned All-Conference First Team, while Alexa Kirton and Zaria Katesigwa were named to the Second Team. Edwards also earned

Offensive Player of the Year. Katesigwa was also placed on the All-Newcomer Team and earned Newcomer of the Year. Head coach Heather Dyche was named Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season.

The rookie and the vetsThe Lobos are finding production from both veterans and freshmen. Seniors Jadyn Edwards and Molly Myers, along with freshman Zaria Katesigwa, go back-and-forth for the top scorer of the conference with every match. Edwards is currently first in the league with 10 goals, while Myers and Katesigwa trail closely behind with eight goals each.

We Know Her! (and her and her and her)The 2021 Lobos certainly should be familiar with the college game, as the Lobos have what is most certainly one of the most experienced teams ever in the history of the program.

UNM returns 22 letterwinners from the 2020 season (which was played in the Spring of 2021), losing just three letterwinners. Of the 22 letterwinners, nine were full-time starters a year ago.

Super SeniorsWhile we think everyone that wears the Cherry and Silver are super, UNM has officially seven players that are considered “super seniors”. Malia Vanisi, Emily Johnson, Leilani Baker, Alexa Kirton, Aspen Headrick, Cami Floth and Madi Hirschman all were seniors last season but were able to return for the 2021 season due to the COVID crisis that moved the season. UNM will have three more super senior classes after this year as well.

Four Named to GCU Classic All-Tournament TeamNew Mexico’s sweep of Northern Arizona (6-2) and Grand Canyon (2-0) gave the Lobos the title of the GCU Classic, as both GCU and Denver finished 1-1 in the classic with Northern Arizona 0-2.

Four Lobos were named All-Tournament. Jaelyn Hendren, Alexa Kirton, Jadyn Edwards and Karlee Maes were all honored in a vote of coaches and selected media at the matches.

Rio Grande Rivalry Win AgainThe Lobos improved to 10-1 against New Mexico State, winning 3-1 in the first meeting in two years. The Lobos picked up goals from Zaria Katesigwa, Jadyn Edwards and Molly Myers in winning for the 10th time in 11 tries against the Aggies. It marked the first time in five meetings in Las Cruces that the final score wasn’t 1-0.

Shot to the Heart, and You’re To Blame...Jadyn Edwards easily leads the Mountain West in both total shots with 86 and shots per game with 1.90 shots per games. Edwards’ 86 shots are 30 more than anyone else in the league as Gracie Armstrong of Colorado State has 56 shots.

BAckline stands tallWhat keeps the Lobos so confident day in and day out is their strong defense. Emily Johnson leads the way in protecting the net, but it is defenders like Karlee Maes, Myah Isais and Jaelyn Hendren that ensure Johnson endures the least pressure possible. Maes, Isais and Hendren combine for just over 4,300 minutes. The defense has proven to be essential to the Lobos

success through the season. They have facilitated many blocked shots and off target shots, forced goal kicks over corners and successfully booted the ball out of the box.

setting program recordsNew Mexico set two new program records earlier this season with their eight-game winning streak and nine-game conference winning streak. The Lobos’ eight-game winning streak marked the sixth time in the last five seasons that UNM has had at least a winning streak of four matches. Those six streaks of four straight wins equals the number of four-match winning streaks in the 17 seasons prior to the arrival of Heather Dyche.

The eight-game winning streak was the longest in program history. The Lobos also set a new conference winning streak with nine straight conference wins, dating back to last season.

With 13 wins this season, the Lobos are tied for second-most single season wins in program history. This si the second time head coach Heather Dyche has led the Lobos to a 13-win season, the last being in the 2018 season. The most single season wins in program history was 15 in the 1997 season.

Edwards moves into top 10 in career goals, assist and pointsJadyn Edwards continues to move her way up the New Mexico career record book with each game. The senior from Mill Creek, Washington has scored at least three goals in every season, scoring three in her freshman and junior seasons and six as a sophomore. She has beat her previous career-best with 10 goals so far this season. Edwards is currently sixth in career goals, tied for second in career assists and third in career points.

KIRTON CALLWith each game she starts, super senior Alexa Kirton continues to add on to the program record for most games played. She currently has 85 career games played, the most by any active Lobo. With her two starts against Air Force and Colorado College on Oct. 21 & 24, she tied and then passed Liz Nare, who is now second all-time with 82 games played from 2010-13.

It Had Been A WhileUNM’s 2-1 win over Washington was UNM’s first win over a Pac-12 team in 14 years, when UNM defeated Arizona State in Albuquerque 1-0 on Sept. 25, 2007.

The Best Offense is a Good Defense? The phrase is the opposite of that, but it still held true. Emily Johnson has an assist on the game-winning goal, and it’s the second time in the Heather Dyche era that a goalkeeper assisted on the game-winning goal. The last time wasn’t as exciting. Johnson’s teammate Malia Vanisi had a secondary assist on the third goal against Pacific in a 4-2 win in 2018.

New MExico’s TeamThe Lobos have a roster of 35, and more than a third of the team, 12, hail from the great state of New Mexico. UNM has players from Albuquerque, Rio Rancho, Alamogordo, Los Alamos and Deming.

Rare occurance That hasn’t happened this yearOne thing Heather Dyche has done a fantastic job of as coach of the Lobos since she took over is bouncing back from a loss. Since taking over seven year ago, UNM has only lost back-to-back home matches twice. In her first two games, the Lobos lost to No. 1 Florida State 3-1 and No. 15 Texas Tech 1-0 and in 2016 UNM lost to Colorado College and Air Force 1-0 and 2-1. UNM is 2-0-0 this season after a loss.

Goalkeeping RichesTeams are happy when it has one returning goalkeeper, so UNM’s head coach Heather Dyche must be downright ecstatic since she has TWO starting goalkeepers back. Emily Johnson was the starter in 2018 and 2020, and Malia Vanisi was the starter in 2019. Both have chances to move up the career charts in several categories.
