PROGRAM GUIDE

Page 2 www.smrecdept.org 414-766-5081

Dear Parents,

First and foremost, we hope that you and your loved ones are safe and healthy. The South

Milwaukee Recreation Department will make every effort to continue to offer quality pro-

gramming while keeping you and your children safe during these unprecedented times.

The health and safety of everyone remains our highest priority. Below, you will find a summary of actions we are tak-

ing to help ensure we are lowering COVID-19 risk as much as possible while also allowing our community youth and

adults to participate in the programs of their choice. Also, please look over the Safety Guidelines for Camps and Clas-

ses at the bottom of this page.

WE ARE:

Intensifying cleaning, disinfection, and ventilation within our facilities and premises.

Reducing physical closeness or contact between participants:

o allowing players to focus on building individual skills

o keeping children in small groups

o staggering arrival and drop off times

o promoting everyone stay 6 feet apart

o discouraging unnecessary physical contact, such as high-fives, handshakes, fist bumps, and hugs etc.,

Promoting healthy hygiene practices

o providing hand sanitizer before and after practices and games

o encouraging children to cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or to use the inside of their elbow, and

reminding them to not spit.

Requiring everyone wear a mask and practice physical distancing. As a reminder, children younger than 2 years

of age should not wear a mask.

Limiting the sharing of equipment by providing extra equipment to minimize the need to share or encouraging

players to bring their own equipment.

Anyone who is sick or has been in contact with someone who has COVID-19— includ-

ing participants, family members, coaches, staff and spectators — should not attend

classes or contests. Be on the lookout for symptoms of COVID-19, which include fe-

ver, cough, or shortness of breath. Call your doctor if you think you or a family mem-

ber is sick.

Thank you and stay healthy,

Stan Dorff, Recreation Director

Due to COVID-19

all students and

staff will be re-

quired to wear a

mask and practice physical dis-

tancing until such time both the

state and school district lift the

mask mandate!

W elcome to the South Milwaukee Recreation Department’s Summer Fun Camp. We are sure with your un-derstanding of how the program functions, and knowing your parent and camper responsibilities, that your child will have a successful experience and a lot of fun this summer.

Summer should be spent having fun, being active and enjoying the beautiful weather, not spent playing video games and sleeping until noon. Our 9 weeks of summer camp are jam packed with fun. During these 9 weeks your child will have the opportunity to play, learn new games, work on craft projects, participate in athletics, go on field trips, and enjoy an hour of recreational swimming. All of this while making new friends. If it’s fun you are after, look no further-this is the camp is for you!

Those participating in recreational swim must be able to stand in 42” of water and need to bring a swimming suit and towel. Any camper wishing to swim in the deep end must pass a swim test administered by our certified lifeguards. To learn more, please read our Fun Camp Parent Guide and Handbook found on-line at www.smrecdept.org. Our team is also available to answer your ques-tions by phone at 414-766-5081 or 414-766-5932. Get a head start on filling out your Fun Camp forms—you can find all of the camper forms needed online or at the recreation department. FREE LUNCH will be served beginning at NOON from Tuesday, June 22—August 6 in the High School Cafeteria. Lunch WILL NOT be provided during Camp #1 and Camp #9 and on Monday, June 21.

If your child is a returning or a new camper, you may have some ques-tions. Whatever the case may be, we would be delighted to have you ask us questions to gain a better understanding of the program. You may register online (www.smrecdept.org), by mail, or in person at the Rec-reation Department. Call us at 766-5081 or 766-5932 for more information.

4TH OF JULY CELEBRATION

THIS PROGRAM IS NOT SCHEDULED AT THIS TIME — WATCH FOR AN ANNOUNCEMENT FROM THE CITY

The City of South Milwaukee is not in the position to make a decision about the July 4th Celebration in time for this publication. At this point,

it is doubtful we will have a program similar to our previous events. With our desire to abide by health guidance, it is hard to see how this

event will happen, but we are optimistic, and hoping things will change. Also, the county is not considering summer permitting re-

quests at this point. Watch for more information!

Parent & Athlete Concussion Information Sheet Reformatted from the Center for Disease Control’s Heads Up Concussion in Youth Sports Program.

A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury that changes the way the brain normally works. A concussion is caused by bump, blow, or jolt to the head or body that causes the head and brain to move rapidly back and forth. Even a “ding,” “getting your bell rung,” or what seems to be a mild bump or blow to the head can be serious.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF CONCUSSION Signs and symptoms of concussion can show up right after the injury or may not appear or be noticed until days or weeks after the injury. If an athlete reports one or more symptoms of concussion listed below after a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or body, s/he must be kept out of play the day of the injury and until a health care professional, experienced in evaluating for concussion, says s/he is symptom free and it’s OK to return to play.

Symptoms Reported by Athletes • Headaches or “pressure” in the head • Nausea or vomiting • Balance problems or dizziness • Double or blurry vision • Sensitivity to noise or light • Feeling sluggish, hazy, foggy or groggy • Concentration or memory problems • Confusion • Just not “feeling right”

Signs Observed by Parents/Others • Appears dazed or stunned • Is confused about assignment or position • Forgets an instruction • Is unsure of game, score, or opponent • Moves clumsily • Answers questions slowly • Loses consciousness (even briefly) • Mood, behavior, or personality changes • Can’t recall events prior to hit or fall • Can’t recall events after to hit or fall

CONCUSSION DANGER SIGNS In rare cases, a dangerous blood clot may form on the brain in a person with a concussion and crowd the brain against the skull. An athlete should receive immediate medical attention if after a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or body s/he exhibits any of the following danger signs:

One pupil larger than the other

Is drowsy or cannot be awakened

A headache that not only does not diminish, but gets worse

Weakness, numbness, or decreased coordination

Repeated vomiting or nausea

Slurred speech

Convulsions or seizures

Cannot recognize people or places

Becomes increasingly confused, restless, or agitated

Has unusual behavior

Loses consciousness (even a brief loss of consciousness should be taken seriously)

WHY SHOULD AN ATHLETE REPORT THEIR SYMPTOMS? If an athlete has a concussion, his/her brain needs time to heal. While an athlete’s brain is still healing s/he is much more likely to have another concussion. Repeat concussions can increase the time it takes to recover. In rare cases, repeat concussions in young athletes can result in brain swelling or permanent damage to their brain. They can even be fatal.

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IF YOU THINK YOUR ATHLETE HAS A CONCUSSION? If you suspect that an athlete has a concussion, remove the athlete from play and seek medical attention. Do not try to judge the severity of the injury yourself. Keep the athlete out of play the day of the injury and until a health care professional, experienced in evaluating for concussion, says s/he is symptom-free and it’s OK to return to play. Rest is key to helping an athlete recover from a concussion. Exercising or activities that involve a lot of concentration, such as studying, working on the computer, or playing video games, may cause concussion symptoms to reappear or get worse. After a concussion, returning to sports and school is a gradual process that should be carefully managed and monitored by a health care professional.

PARENT/GUARDIAN AGREEMENT STATEMENT I have read and fully understand this information sheet regarding concussions and I agree that if it appears that my child may have sustained a concussion or head injury that he/she is to be removed from any program activity until such time that a trained medical professional can examine him/her and approve their return to play In the activity, pursuant to Section 118.293 Wisconsin Statutes relating to concussions and other head injuries. In such case, I understand that I am to provide a written clearance from a trained medical professional for my child to return to play in the activity.

FITNESS CENTER

MEET OUR FITNESS CENTER MANAGER Greetings, As the new Fitness Center Manager, I want to share a little background about myself for anyone I have or have yet to meet. Oak Creek has been home to me for my entire life. My par-ents, Greg and Marlene, are both from Wisconsin and have

been married over 40 years. Alongside my older brother Travis, I grew up in a household centered on faith, family, and baseball. My work career began in 2009 when I had the privilege of working as a bat-boy for the Milwaukee Brewers alongside my brother, who has been with the organization for 15 years and counting. He is currently the Minor League Clubhouse Manager at their Spring Training facility in Maryvale, Arizona. All the way from Parks and Rec T-ball to D3 Basketball at Carthage College, and minor league baseball games every summer to working for the Milwau-kee Brewers, my life has revolved around sports and being active. My desire to be a part of the Fitness industry began with my brother’s transformation story. He worked with a personal trainer that helped him achieve over 80 pounds of weight loss. I became inspired to change lives through exercise after seeing the positive impact it had on his life. My own transformation started in 2011 when I began lifting weights following my final season of col-legiate basketball. Having the opposite problem of not being able to gain weight, I was also motivated to gain what he lost (not literally). During my final year of schooling in 2014, I started my first internship here at the South Milwaukee Fitness Center. After graduating from UW-Parkside with an Exercise Science degree, I became a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association in 2014. One month later, I began working at the Wisconsin Athletic Club Downtown in a num-ber of different roles from Front Desk Attendant, Personal Trainer, to Sales Associ-ate over the course of six years before return-ing to the South Milwaukee Fitness Center in July of 2020. Just six years after my first in-ternship, things have come full circle as I now have the opportunity of being Manager where it all started. Adam Voss
