There’s a joke among pastors that if a Baptist says to you, in a conversation, "I’ll be praying for you", what he’s actually saying is, "I’ll be leaving now."

It might be humorous but many people will suspect that it is true of Christians. You see, sometimes when we use often repeated phrases in conversation, they tend to lose the promise of genuine intention and meaning and become just 'the done thing', the ritual, the proper practice.

In times gone by, people would end a conversation with a genuine, "God be with you" (God be wi' ye). It was a pronouncement of divine blessing, uttered as a petition or as an assurance. Over time, that became the "Goodbye" we use today, a proper way of leaving a conversation but having lost the real meaning of the original.

I’d like to suggest a few ways we can part ways at the end of a conversation

that would carry tremendous weight:

1. By not just saying, "I’ll be praying for you" but actually praying for the person before leaving. Jesus did this when he was about to leave his disciples, and you can use a lot of His same words to pray for your friends. Jesus is still praying these words for you right now as he intercedes for you.

2. Many churches end their services with a benediction expressed as a pronouncement of blessing prayer. These are powerful because they come straight out of the Bible. Do you know that there are over 100 benedictions in the Bible? You too can use a benediction when you part ways with friends, because the word benediction comes from the Latin, bene (well) and dicere (to speak), so literally "to speak well of" your friends. Here are 28 benedictions which you can speak over God’s beloved.

3. I love the idea of 'recovering' or 'redeeming' the greeting blessing of "God be with you", and have tried to replace "goodbye" in my conversations with "God be with you". It’s so beautiful, because it’s not just a petition, it’s a statement of fact for us as believers.

4. Nowadays we often reserve “grace, peace and joy” as greetings for Christmas. But they are gifts from Jesus for every day and many of the books of the New Testament, which were written as letters, start and end with these powerful wishes.

So now, have a great term. Grace, peace and joy to you all.
