GM taps 76 for Supplier of YearRobert [email protected]

DETROIT — Seventy-six of GeneralMotors Co.’s 19,996 suppliers earnedSupplier of the Year recognition fromthe automaker this month.

Winning top-supplier honors inGM’s 2009 competition was particu-larly demanding because the awardcovered one of the toughest years inGM’s 101-year history: the year itfiled for bankruptcy.

In a GM blog, Bob Socia, vice presi-dent for global purchasing and sup-ply, said, “The suppliers who outper-formed their objectives in quality, technology, service and price in thatenvironment truly are world class.”

The competition last year was so de-manding that the automaker did notsingle out one top performer — unlikethe previous year, when Gentex Corp.

got the top award. “All deserved it,”said GM spokesman Alan Adler.

Mann + Hummel USA Inc., a suppli-er of filter and air intake systems, wasone of the honorees this year, contin-uing a string that stretches back 18consecutive years. Mann + HummelGmbH, of Ludwigsburg, Germany, isthe supplier’s parent company.

The next-longest string belongs toDenso Corp., of Kariya, Japan, with17 awards.

U.S. suppliers again dominated thelist of top suppliers for 2009, with 27on the list. They included several re-peat honorees, including Lear Corp.,Johnson Controls Inc. and mirrormaker Gentex.

The second most-represented na-tionality was South Korea. GM hon-ored 17 Korean suppliers, a numberthat has doubled since 2005.c

3 suppliersexceed Toyotaexpectations

Three suppliers won top honorsfrom Toyota Motor Engineeringand Manufacturing North Ameri-ca Inc. during the company’s an-nual supplier business meeting.

Denso International AmericaInc., Johnson Controls Inc. andMahle Inc. got the awards, whichrecognize suppliers that exceedToyota’s expectations for severalyears. Denso and Mahle receivedthe superior award in the qualitycategory. Johnson Controls earnedits award for supplier diversity.

Bosch aims to double sales at auto unitMatthias Krust [email protected].

STUTTGART — Robert BoschGmbH plans to more than doublerevenue in its automotive technologydivision to 45 billion euros, or about$61.9 billion, within 10 years. Thesupplier sees opportunities in Asia’sdeveloping economies and in risingsales of electric cars.

Bosch expects to increase sales inChina, India, Russia and Brazil and inSoutheast Asia. The shift to empha-size Asian growth offers considerableopportunities, Bernd Bohr, head of

Bosch’s vehicle technology division, told sales and marketing staff thismonth at an internal company event.

The same is true for the long-termgrowth potential of electric vehicles,Bohr said.

Bosch originally wanted its auto-motive division, which includes af-termarket parts, to top $61 billion by2015. But the financial crisis anddrastic drop in global car and com-mercial-vehicle sales thwarted thoseplans.

The goal now been pushed back to2019, Peter Tyroller, Bosch’s saleschief, said at the event.

Based on interim figures, the auto-motive division’s revenue fell 18 per-cent to about $29.5 billion last year. The division delivers 57 percent ofBosch group revenue.c

Bohr: Asia andelectric vehiclesoffer Boschconsiderablepotential for long-term growth.
