Charlie Brown takes out the 20th Annual Formula 500 Speedweek

Page 2: 20th Annual Formula 500 Speedweek

This years 2013/14 Victorian Formula 500 Speedweek was run and won in first class fashion.

Yes, we had to fight the weather and lost two rounds, but with the top 10 positions completely live going into the final feature race on the final night, it has seen one of the closest finishes in its history.

With 60 Cars entering over the Speedweek, it was incredible to see the series unfold. I would personally like to thank all of the Officials that made it happen, the sponsors who worked hard with me to take the series to another level. No body forces you to contribute your hard earned dollars or product, and on behalf of everyone involved, thank you.

- Brandon Aranyosi

Behind the Lens!Sprintcarzone.com is a website by a driver, for our drivers! Download all the High Res Photos you need for all your promotional and marketing needs for only $75 a season!

Founder of Sprintcar Zone: Daniel Beard

When did you first get into speedway? My Dad was one of the founding members of Simpson Speedway so I recall going there at a very young age and being scared to death by the noise of all the sedans. I also remember going to Premier years ago and barracking for the Black Magic sprintcar...Where did the idea of sprint car zone photos come from?Ive taken photos of Speedway for many years and also co-founded the Sprintcar World website but my passion was always photos. I have never really done much with my photos other than supply some magazines and newspapers and then when I got my wingless I was shocked at the cost of getting a few digital pics to simply have on my computer and thought there has to be a better way for the racer to get pics of the cars they spend their hard earned time and money on to go racing.

Why did you decide to start scz?I just wanted a name that was my own, and when we started our Wingless Sprintcar race team we wanted to banner it with a website that was good for the sponsors to relate to. Sprintar Zone and the photo deal certainly does that. It also allows us to use the talents of some of the best photographers in the country and gives them some ownership over the brand as well.

What are your future plans? To keep taking photos for the enjoyment of not only the racers, but also for the group of photographers taking them. Id love to see it grow to a photographer in each state contributing to the site and having thousands of photos in the one-stop location for all racers to download their own pics at their leisure.

Do you only photograph racing?Pretty much, I have done a wedding or two but Speedway is what excites me behind the lens. I like to walk around during the course of the night and find different angles. I love to find the shot that shows the aggression of the car working and also to capture a photo that tells a story. I also enjoy the fact you get entrenched in the emotional roller coaster of the sport during a nights events and a photo can then record that moment in time forever.

Heard you’ve kicked a few goals in your football career, when did racing become a main priority?I had a bad motor car accident after the 1998 football season on the way home in a taxi from the presentation night celebrating our back to back premierships. Both drivers were killed and I spent a week in ICU with both broken legs and a smashed left elbow and wrist. It was during the months of rehab I got serious about covering Speedway on the internet and that led to taking photos from the infield and the rest as they say is history. I did manage to play football again, but by the time I played with any seriousness I was already entrenched in the behind the scenes at Speedway.

A young family, so they love it as much as you doMy boys absolutely love it. The oldest one Jordan is a Sprintcar nut and knows all the drivers, all their cars and would watch Sprintcars on TV all day every day. Cooper is less enthusiastic but has taken a shine to Glen Sutherland and his lemon car. The boys love being out in the shed and helping out with my Wingless Sprintcar and mum is even starting to enjoy going now that she pretty much has to!

Round 1 Proudly Brought to you by:

A massive WSS crowd, great weather, heaps of entries and a near perfect track set everything up for a great round. All night the track was at least 2 lanes wide for the 500’s and in every heat they were both used, history will show Charlie Brown put on a clinic, rim riding his way to a massive win and lapping up to 9th place in the process. Speedweek 20 couldn’t have started any better!

Page 7: 20th Annual Formula 500 Speedweek
Page 8: 20th Annual Formula 500 Speedweek

Round 2 Proudly Brought to you by:

Each year we seem to “find” a new name, at Hamilton we found this years, Brad Freeman! The heats produced the standard of racing we’ve come to expect from Western Speedway, still the only venue we race at that has hosted a round every year speedweek has been run! But the big news was all about Brad Freeman, he qualified on pole at a track he had never seen before, then proceeded to drive into the distance right from the start. At every restart Brad lead comfortably to eventually win his first big race and easily become the fastest Tasmanian we’ve had over here for quite some time!

Page 9: 20th Annual Formula 500 Speedweek
Page 10: 20th Annual Formula 500 Speedweek

Round 3 Proudly Brought to you by:

Warrnambool was the first of our wash outs this year, everybody looks forward to supporting WSS and racing in front of 8000 to 10000 people, however this year it was not to be!

Page 11: 20th Annual Formula 500 Speedweek
Page 12: 20th Annual Formula 500 Speedweek

Round 4 Proudly Brought to you by:

You could look at this round from a lot of different angles! After dreadful weather conditions Laang tried everything they could to supply us with a race ready track, and our racers showed a lot of ticker by agreeing to try and run the show. After only two heats the track was deemed unsafe by the stewards and the race was declared a wash out…

Page 13: 20th Annual Formula 500 Speedweek
Page 14: 20th Annual Formula 500 Speedweek

Round 5 Proudly Brought to you by:

Last year it was nearly 40C when we arrived to race this round, this year it was maybe 15C, viciously cold! Darlington’s two drag strips with a U-turn at each end always provides action packed racing, although the track hasn’t been getting very wide, it does get extremely intense! It’s always great to watch racing there and the packed spectator area each year confirms it. Just Like Charlie and Brad earlier in the week, Jye Okeefe started from the front and drove away, Jye’s no stranger to running well at Darlington and it showed, a very dominant performance on a pretty demanding little track, 3 different rounds, 3 different winners!

Page 15: 20th Annual Formula 500 Speedweek
Page 16: 20th Annual Formula 500 Speedweek

Round 6 Proudly Brought to you by:

James Aranyosi’s Speedweek results show he’s finished second by less than a few tenths here at the last two rounds… not this year, in easily the best feature of the week, Cody Maroske ran away early and looked set to comfortably win his first speedweek feature, however Azza had a different idea! Using some late race cautions and the top of the track to perfection the last few laps were raced like it paid $10000 to win, Azza’s commitment to the top had to be seen to be appreciated especially in 3 and 4! Cody’s run around the bottom was like clock work. The slide jobs for the lead over the last few laps had everyone at the venue saying “that was the best race I’ve seen all year” In the end the V50 turned the tables and won Simpson by a few tenths. What a great race!

Page 17: 20th Annual Formula 500 Speedweek
Page 18: 20th Annual Formula 500 Speedweek

Round 7 Proudly Brought to you by:

Take two! Hardly brilliant weather again, but we got it in… just. James Aranyosi’s momentum and confidence from the night before kept rolling right through to the same venue he won at last year. After 2 heat wins, the V50 started on the front row and was never headed taking the win from a fast finishing Chris Bellman. If you take Jye O’Keefe’s 12.914 out of the list, on the rain effected track the lap times from the rest of the top nineteen finishers were covered by less than 3 tenths! Ranging from Mark House’s 13.025 to Shane Dyno’s 13.313, Speedweeks competitive did you say!

SERIES HARD CHARGER

Both of these guys - Jye Okeeffe & Andrew Rae passed 20 cars transfering them from the rear of the B-Main, into the A Main to continue passing cars! Stellar driving!

Why did you start racing speedway?Growing up watching speedway i always wanting to do what my dad did. Highlights in the class/ other classes of your racing?1st Australian Junior Sedan Title, 1st Queensland Junior Sedan Title, 1st Northern Territory Junior Sedan Title, 3rd Australian Microsprint Title.Rising Star Program Why did you come down to race speedweek? As were new to the class i wanted as much seat time as i could get against the best in the country so coming down for 7 nights of racing back to back was the perfect way. If you want to be the best you have to beat the best. Highs of the week? The high point of the week would have to have been Simpson running a close second to James. Running at tracks like Mount Gambier and Premier Speedway were definitely ones i always wanted to run at. I’ve never run on a track with such hard braking zone so Darlington was an absolute blast!

Lows of the week?Running at Hamilton would have to be my low point running up to 6th and falling back to 10th after the

restart. Unlike all the other tracks it personally just wasn’t racey enough. The rain outs would also have to be a low having wanted to run at both Laang and Premier.

If you could change one thing from the week what would it be?

Really i wouldn’t change anything, maybe the weather if i had that power. Overall thoughts on the Victorian Formula 500 Speedweek series as a whole?

Overall i think the format and series was incredible, the hard wheel to wheel racing was great and definitely improved my driving. Having run so well in the series we couldn’t have asked for a better first experience. We will definitely be back next year!

Special thanks to crew and sponsors?Absolutely must thank my Dad, Garry for his incredible devotion to my racing and wanting me to succeed, Jake Smith for his hard work all series and my fantastic sponsors, Beenleigh Mufflers and Brakes A1 Exhausts, Woodeson Excavation, Penrite, Redback Performance, Leethal Race Wings, Jettco, T & B Alignments, Mckinnon Quarries & Civil and Shell Shock.
