Volume 28 Number 2 A Quarterly Publication of Quinlan & Fabish Music Company Winter 2014-15
This special annual event will be held at
our Burr Ridge location on Tuesday,
February 24th from 8:30am-4:00pm.
Lunch will be provided and the event is
free to any current student teacher or
interested college student. For many
years, this event has helped young
teachers-to-be with some very valuable
information to help during their first
year of teaching.
Students will spend time with members
of the QF Repair Staff learning some
basics of
woodwind,
brass, and
string repairs.
These young
teachers soon
realize that it’s
very likely
they will be
asked to repair an instrument before they
teach their first note!
Other topics to be explored that day
include: Preparing your resume &
interview tips, Professionalism,
Recruiting & Retention, and more.
Student Teacher Day is open to any
interested college Music student. If you
know of a recent graduate, please pass
the word along to them too! A
registration form is available on the back
cover or you can register online at:

Happy Holidays from Q&F By George Quinlan, Jr.
It’s hard to believe that the holiday sea-
son is here! It seems like the school year
just started and now it’s holiday time
already?!?
In early September, VanderCook Col-
lege of Music held the ribbon-cutting
ceremony for the new (2nd) building on
campus. The new building provides
much needed teaching classrooms and
studios, several new Wenger practice
rooms and a
recital hall,
named in my
father’s honor -
The George A.
Quinlan, Sr.
Recital Hall. In
addition, on a
daily basis it
provides a won-
derful rehearsal
space for the
bands and
choirs. I was fortunate to attend the rib-
bon-cutting presentation AND to hear
the first recital in the room when Haynes
flute artist, Marco Granados performed
in October. The room has great acous-
tics for recitals and we are planning a
special QF event on Thursday evening
during the Midwest Clinic to celebrate!
The other big news for QF is that our
NW Suburban store will relocate early in
2015! Our new space will accommodate
more lesson customers, allow us to ex-
pand the repair facility, and be closer to
major highways for better access. Stay
tuned for details!!
Finally, we were honored to be named
“Retailer of the Year” by Music, Inc.
magazine in December. This trade jour-
nal recognizes both retailers and suppli-
ers in each year-end issue. To be includ-
ed in the Excellence Issue is indeed an
honor considering the company included
Yamaha, Harris-Teller, St. Louis Music,
and our retailer friends to the North-
Heid Music of Wisconsin and to the
South-The Music Shoppe of Normal, IL
and “the big guys”-GC and Sam Ash

journey in school band or orchestra.
We are honored to be selected as
“Retailer of the Year” and thank our
friends at Maher Publications for this
recognition. (You may recognize Maher
Publication as publishers of their legend-
ary Downbeat Jazz magazine.)
Finally, we encourage you to consider
participation in the Midwest Band &
Orchestra Clinic in December. The
Midwest Clinic International Band, Or-
chestra and Music Conference offers
guests interested in music education an
array of clinics and exhibits, as well as
access to music and teaching icons. The
conference will also focus on industry
trends and future topics in business and
music education. With more than 17,000
attendees from all 50 states and more
than 30 countries, The Midwest Clinic
offers music educators and musicians
alike an unmatched networking oppor-

Our Quinlan and Fabish NX, SX, and
GX are now all being made using the
Global Bow materials. In addition, we
have been able to retain our specific
design of the NX bow as featured in our
2014-15 String Buyer’s Guide. Call or
ask your QF rep for free copies for your
students!
Lloyd Palmiter, our Str ing Specialist, br ings extensive knowledge to our company
stemming from his twenty years experience teaching orchestra and cello; serving as a clini-
cian and consultant for Conn-Selmer; and, from his experience as general manager of the William Harris Lee Workshop. Remaining active as a clinician and teacher, Lloyd directs
the Silver Strings Ensemble that consists of adult learners of the stringed instruments and
has performed at the Midwest Clinic in Chicago. One of his specialties, orchestral work-shops tracing the elements of the making of a stringed instrument and associating those to
the elements necessary to produce quality tone on a stringed instrument, have become very
popular with our Illinois and Indiana teachers. To schedule a workshop or step-up day, call his office at our Burr Ridge location. He visits all store locations regularly and is available by appointment to individually
help you and your students find just the right instrument. You’ve see Lloyd at conferences of IMEA, MENC, ASTA, Violin Society of America, and at the
International Exhibition of violinmakers in Cremona, Italy, where he will be scouting to bring you the best quality instruments available from all over the world!
A shout out to the Music Education
Majors at Elmhurst College with whom I
met recently to share my experiences
from years of teaching and in the music
instrument industry. Fun group to be
among and it gives me confidence for our
future to meet these students and hear
their intelligent questions and their
willingness to learn. Thanks to JoAnn
May and her students for the
opportunity to spend time together.
Have you heard of any changes when it
comes to traveling abroad and stringed
instruments and BOWS! I bet you have if
you have been paying attention. Coda
Bows had instituted using material in
making their NX, SX and GX bows so
their bows and made of materials which
can cross international borders without
concern.
Jeff Van Fossen of Coda Bows:
International and government agencies
are increasingly protecting, regulating,
and monitoring species (ivory,
motherofpearl, pernambuco, ebony, and
exotic leathers) commonly found on
traditional bows for stringed instruments.
Recent species regulations are causing
players and makers
growing concern about
delay, fine, and
confiscation when
crossing borders.
In answer to growing
concerns, and in keep-
ing with our legacy of
innovating beautiful al-
ternatives to endangered
species, CodaBow Inter-
national has innovated
GlobalBowTM technol-
ogies that will permit
your CodaBow® to
cross any border on the
planet.
GlobalBowTM is a suite of technologies
that collectively eliminate the use of
regulated species common to traditional
bows. Technologies include: Kevlar and
carbon fiber shaft architecture; Fiber
reinforced composite or metal alloy tip
plates; and XEBONY® highperformance
composite frogs (available in Natural and
Alabaster) with carbon fiber slides.
GlobalBowTM technology is now
available as a standard feature on all
advanced CodaBow®\ models, including
the popular DIAMOND Collection and the
INFINITY. Starting at $415.
“The travel risk to traditional bows
containing regulated species is a legitimate
and growing concern for all players,
students and professionals alike,” said Jeff
Van Fossen, president of CodaBow
International. “We are delighted that our
GlobalBowTM innovations give players a
reliable and responsible performance
solution that frees them to travel
worldwide while their expensive
traditional bow remains safely at home.”

Ultrasonic Cleaning
for Marching Brass Instruments
Looking for a great way to protect your
marching brass instruments AND stretch
your repair budget?
During the months of January and Febru-
ary all marching brass instruments will
receive a school discount of 20% on ul-
trasonic cleaning. Are you familiar with
this process?
Ultrasonic cleaning is the most modern
and simply the best method of brass in-
strument cleaning. Replacing antiquated
acids and chemicals, an ultrasonic ma-
chine uses sound waves to clean your
sousaphones, mellophones, and marching
brass instruments. The ultrasonic process
is environmentally friendly and safer for
our technicians and your students. It is
the most thorough and efficient method.
Your instruments will be picked up, ultra-
sonically cleaned, lubricated, restored to
good playing condition with new corks
and felts and returned to your school by
your QF representative. Dent removal,
silver hand-polishing, etc. can also be
provided at additional cost to restore the
beauty of your brass instruments!

Often times, when you see an artist
endorsement for an instrument,
especially for a lesser known brand, you
wonder if they really play that
instrument or are they just looking for
publicity? This question popped into my
mind when I first saw that saxophone
legend Bob Mintzer put his name behind
the Eastman brand roughly two years
ago. While at the NAMM show in 2013,
I had the privilege, along with a few
representatives of the Eastman company,
of spending some time with Mr.
Mintzer. In addition to being a true
gentlemen, I found out another
important fact during our
conversation….he actually plays the
instruments he endorses!! At the time,
he was still quite attached to his vintage
Selmer tenor , splitting time with it
and the Eastman 52nd Street. He did,
however, mention that he played and
recorded with the Eastman soprano
exclusively. This got my attention, so
upon returning home, I made sure to try
this instrument. It is extremely easy to
play and has the best intonation of any
soprano I have played to date. In fact, I
now play the Eastman soprano, and
recommend it as often as I can. Not only
a tremendous value, it offers a very good
ergonomic design, which includes a
beveled octave key and has an
exceptionally even scale throughout the
full range of the instrument. As for the
52nd Street tenor , I encourage people
to try this horn. This horn, much like the
soprano, offers a very even scale
throughout the full range of the
instrument. Although it
responds easily, it also has a
depth to its sound. These
horns should be considered
as legitimate options for any
serious performer.
Speaking of Mr. Mintzer, I
am proud to announce that
he will be appearing live
with the New Standard Jazz
Orchestra on Thursday
December 18th at Reggie’s
(2105 S. State Street). For
those of you attending the
Q&F Director’s party, the
club is conveniently located
in between McCormick
Place and VanderCook and
the first set begins at 8:30.

the very finest talent in
Chicago, including Mark
Colby, Chris Madsen, Tom
Garling, Roger Ingram,
Pete Benson, Scott Burns
& Andy Baker. Please visit

As many of you are aware, DANSR, the
US distributor of Vandoren reeds, has
reintroduced the Vandojam to the
Chicago area. Headlined each time by a
Vandoren ar tist, this jam session is
open to all ages of jazz players and
always draws a diverse crowd. Held at
Fitzgerald’s in Berwyn, it is a regular
part of the Sidebar Sessions, a jazz series
held every Wednesday. On November
12th, the featured performer was alto
saxophonist phenom Antonio Hart. In
addition to the actual jam session, Mr.
Hart held an hour long clinic before
the session, discussing the nuances and
history of jazz. He then brought many
of the young students in attendance up
on stage with him to perform. A true
“hands on” education! Earlier in the
day, Brian Logan at Wheeling High
School hosted Mr. Hart for a clinic with
their top jazz band. A true positive force
of musical energy, he brought those
eager young players to an entirely new
level. KP
Chicago Saxophonist Ken Partyka enjoys a multi-faceted career in the music business, which spans over twenty years.
In his unique career, he has amassed an impressive resume as a performer, educator, bandleader and composer/arranger
as well as being integrally involved with the retail music industry. Over his career, Ken has performed or recorded with
such acclaimed performers as Mel Torme, Arturo Sandoval, Frankie Valli, Ron Hawking, Frank D’Rone and Sonia
Dada and has performed at the Chicago Jazz Festival, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and the legendary Red
Rock.

Endorsed by Bobby Mintzer, the Andreas Eastman 52nd Street saxophone is a
professional instrument and comes un-lacquered for a truly vintage appearance. I
t is an exceptionally responsive horn in all registers from low to high, and produces a big, fat sound with precise intonation. A larger bell and rolled-style tone
holes contribute to the sound qualities of this instrument that many compare to some of the great vintage horns of the past.

This holiday season brings us two new
and festive folios for students to play and
practice at home. Carl Fischer has
released Christmas with a Twist,
featuring individual
folios for Flute,
Clarinet, Alto
Saxophone, Trumpet
& Trombone. Each
folio contains a CD-
ROM which includes
mp3 play-along
tracks and piano
accompaniments
in .PDF format.
Larry Clark, the mastermind behind this
series, has taken some of our favorite
seasonal tunes and arranged them for a
more contemporary sound. Students will
play “Jingle Bells” in a bluesy shuffle,
“The First Noel” in a punk rock style,
“Silent Night” arranged as a country
ballad, and “Angels We have Heard on
High” as an early pop rock piece. These
folios are compatible with each other,
meaning players of different instruments
could practice together, and the play-
along mp3’s could mean a whole concert
for your students and their friends.
Christmas Carols, published by Hal
Leonard, is meant for the very beginner,
first year students looking to practice
more on their own.
With individual
books for Flute,
Clarinet, Alto Sax,
Tenor Sax,
Trumpet, Horn,
Trombone, Violin,
Viola, and Cello,
most beginning
students will be able
to enjoy this folio.
Also included is access to downloadable
materials. Students will be able to
download audio files to hear what the
song will sound like once they have
mastered it. They can also download
backing tracks to be able to play-along
with a band and put on their very own
concert.
Alfred Music has produced an
interesting full orchestra mash-up called
Holiday Mash-Up. Patrick Roszell
arranges this mash-up for an
intermediate full orchestra; this piece is a
grade 3, according to Alfred. This mash-
up is a spunky union of Have Y ourself a
Merry Little Christmas and Jingle Bell
Rock. I should also mention that the
original arrangement of this was featured
on “Glee”, so students and audiences
alike will be able to recognize, and sing
along with, this exciting piece. The
piece also helps teachers to meet state
standards by including both lyrical and
rock styles in this piece.
Alfred Publishing has released a version
of Auld Lang Syne, arranged by Jan
Farrar-Royce for str ing orchestra.
This piece has always been a nostalgic
favorite on New Year’s Eve and Farrar-
Royce certainly hits the nostalgic mark
as she weaves
variations
throughout the
harmony and
continually repeats
the melody
demanding that the
listener review and
remember the past
year. This piece
could be a
standalone at your next concert or could
be easily done as a sing along.
Sweet Petite Winter Suite composed
by Brian Balmages, and published by
FJH Music, is a piece reminiscent of all
our favorite holiday and winter treats. It
introduces string orchestra students to
different modes, as the first movement is
written in Phrygian mode. It also
introduces the students to multiple
meters and varying
tempos. Balmages
wrote this piece as a
light-hearted
homage to all things
good about the
winter. Movement
I, Candy Cane,
captures the
excitement of the
season’s first candy cane, and elicit a
festive feel. Movement 2, Hot
Chocolate, is more nostalgic and
inspires the feeling of sitting in front of a
fire with a cup of hot chocolate after a
day playing in the snow. Movement 3,
Peppermint Bark, brings back the festive
feel with a more humorous and dance-
like quality. Movement 4, Gingerbread
Man, is all about the excitement of snow
and the holiday season.
Moving the focus over to concert band, a
new Alfred Publishing piece to be
noticed is Snow Day Adventure,
composed by Scott Watson for young
band. This piece depicts all the joy of
having a snow day. Starting from the
snow falling to musically describing
sledding, building snowmen and snow
forts, and snowball fights, this piece is
everyone’s dream of the perfect snow
day.
C.L. Barnhouse Company also jumped
into the season with a wintery piece,
although this one is set more towards the
end of winter. Milton, The Melting
Snowman, by Len Orcino, depicts the
slow flow from winter to spring. The
upbeat beginning starts in a light and
happy style to describe everyone’s
favorite snow creation. The piece slowly
and smoothly starts to slow and the tone
start to change as the sun rises and starts
to heat the earth. The snow man begins
to transform from a proud, standing
figure in the snow, to a small puddle on
the ground. But don’t worry, our dearest
winter friend will be back next year.
