Bushfire Plan & Evacuation Practice

Every year we are required to update our School Bushfire Plan by the end of August and submit it to the Department of Education.

This plan highlights which areas of our school are classified as a Zone 1 fire hazard due to the environmental factors surrounding

the buildings. Once again, the back-left quarter of the school has been identified a Zone 1. To ensure our students know exactly

what to do in case of an emergency we are required to have at least 3 evacuation practices.

Last week we had another of these practices, following the designated routes from classrooms to our safety location on the back

of the school oval. I am very proud to say we had all students and staff on the oval and accounted for in 8 minutes. In the coming

weeks we have a member from the local Department of Fire & Emergency Service (DFES) coming to Singleton PS to ensure we are

doing everything possible to reduce the risks for our students. Once receiving their feedback and the staff feedback from last

week’s practice an updated plan will be put on the school website for your convenience.

display and it was to a high standard. To Belinda and Tracey from the P&C, THANK YOU! for your organisation of the Coffee Van,

Ice Cream Van as well as cooking the Sausage Sizzle for everyone to enjoy!

Junior Faction Athletics Carnival Our Junior Athletics was a huge success. Well done to all of our junior

students who competed on Tuesday this week. The day kicked off with

the 80m sprint, followed by rotational activities including long jump,

sack races, baton relay, egg and spoon race, flag race, tunnel ball and

the tug of war. Well done to our faction captains who assisted in

running the day and lead the students for their faction chants.

Thanks to all parents, carers and families who came to support our kids on the day, we had a fantastic turn out which added to the

vibrant atmosphere.

Our Senior Athletics Carnival is Friday, 20th September. Good luck to all students.

Great Vegie Crunch Last week all of the students and staff participated in the Cancer Council’s Great Vegie Crunch! Thank you to Woolies for their very

generous donation of some crunchy fruit and vegetables. It is really very much appreciated. The children crunched like

crocodiles!!! For further information for families to try and incorporate more fruit and veg into meals please check out:

Special thanks again to Woolies for the Discovery garden contribution. We look forward to

growing some delicious vegetables and pretty flowers for our school.

Indonesian Idol Concert

On Thursday, 29th August, together with hundreds of Indonesian language students from across WA, our Year 6 students converged on the Lakes Theatre at Mandurah Baptist College for the ‘Michael J & V1mast School Concerts in Oz’ Tour. Students from Years 6-12 were immersed in the concert, providing a common experience and learning context in Indonesian Language and Music, with the opportunity to converse with other students in Bahasa Indonesia.

This wonderful experience showcases the similarities the young people of both countries share, rather than focusing on differences.

Just like last year, out school was noticeably one of the most animated as we sang, danced and put up our colourful posters to welcome the singers and their band. The enthusiasm of the students was infectious and shows how much they are enjoying their Indonesian Language Learning. This is the second year our school has been invited by the Indonesian Language Association, Perth “Balai Bahasa Indonesia’ and the Indonesian Consulate General to attend the concert and it looks to become our annual language excursion for Year 6.

Room 10’s Junior Journo Competition Room 10 is entering the Junior Journo competition in The West Australian hoping to win a $100 book voucher from Fremantle Press. The top category winner will be published in the ED section of the West Australian in October. The category we chose to enter is "Spot On", an interview of five classmates on a question relevant to primary school students. Our questions reflect our studies of the Earth's continents and oceans and the challenging of how our human needs and habits reflect on the health of the planet's environment.

“Spot On” By Alexis N

(Year 4, Room 10)

I asked these 8 classmates from Singleton Primary School: How can we help stop the pollution?

Olivia: You can stop harmful pollution by recycling, putting rubbish in the bin, not littering, don't buy single-use plastic, use

reusable bags and you can even use wonderful containers in your lunch box.

Keeley: I would collect all the rubbish and put it in tips and bins, put it on a jet pack and send it into space and write Keeley is the best on it.

Elora: We can stop pollution by instead of using horrible plastic bags use reusable bags and instead of using zip-lock bags use

amazing paper bags and containers. Let’s help the environment.

Larissa: I think we should use wonderful containers and big bags of chips and big tubs of yoghurt instead of those horrible little packets that they make. They are bad for the environment.

Alexis: I would use containers and big bags of chips that don't have terrible little packets in them and if I see a piece of rubbish I

would put it in the bin.

One Big Voice On Friday 30th August the Singleton Primary Senior Choir joined over 5,500 other

Western Australian children in the ‘One Big Voice’ massed choir festival at RAC

Arena. One Big Voice is the largest choir festival of its kind in the Southern

Hemisphere. This was a unique opportunity for our students to combine with

other choirs from all over the state to sing as part of a massed ensemble, with

different school choirs learning different parts of the various songs and putting

them together as a completed piece for the final performance at RAC Arena.

In the lead up to One Big Voice the Senior Choir learned invaluable singing skills

like harmonising, working as part of a greater ensemble, teamwork, voice and breath control, and lyric retention while learning all

12 songs! And on the day we wowed the audience and the other schools with our fantastic talent and our exemplary behaviour.

Students even got to meet special guest performer Jordan Anthony (runner-up from the 2019 season of The Voice) after the show!

We will be sharing a few of the songs we learned for One Big Voice over the rest of the year, so keep an eye (or ear) out for our

upcoming performances.

Chaplin’s Corner Mental Spring-Cleaning Checklist

When we think of spring cleaning, we picture organizing draws and closets, but what about clearing our mental and emotional space? Just as it can feel cathartic to dust and declutter your home, a mental spring clean can provide a sense of relief as well as an emotional boost.

Below are a few ways you can clean up your emotional and mental space. Remember that each day is a fresh start, just like spring.

Straighten out your priorities. Ask yourself: “What’s most important to me?” “What’s most important for my recovery?” It is self-care, support from family and friends, hobbies, relaxation?

Let go of a grudge. Forgiving yourself or someone else can help clear away negative energy so you can focus on more positive aspects of your life.

Sweep away self-criticism. This can take some practice, but it is doable. Start by swapping negative self-talk with positive phrases like “I’m doing my best”.

Focus on your physical health. This spring, vow to clean up your exercise and eating routine.

Write it down. Journaling is a great way to sort, organise and declutter your emotions.

Renew your spirit. A few minutes of yoga, meditation, prayer or deep breathing is great for mental cleansing.

P&C News The P & C quiz night was a great success, it was so popular we actually sold out. Congratulations to our winners and a big thank you to all the P & C members, family, friends and community who helped us to run an amazing night.

Next up is our ‘Loose Change Challenge’ so check under the couch cushions and empty the

bottom of your hand bag. Collection jars are in classrooms now until the end of term.

Remember we have 2 prizes up for grabs, a pizza party and a popcorn party.

Come and ‘Flip Out’ with your friends on Wednesday, 25th September. You need to book

online and make sure you select the Singleton button and an amazing 50% off the entry fee

goes back to the school.

The P & C is currently raising funds to help with the refurbishment of our school library so

your support with our activities benefits all the children and their teachers.

Next term there are some amazing activities planned and we are always looking for a little help, so please come along to a

meeting or just put up your hand to help out when you can.

School Banking Calling for Volunteers – School Banking needs your help!

Our students really enjoy participating in the Commonwealth Bank School Banking program and to keep this program running we need your help.

The program requires volunteer School Banking Co-ordinators to facilitate the banking and distribution of School Banking rewards. This only takes a small amount of your time one day a week, for approximately 1 ½ hours. Commonwealth Bank will provide support on how to run the program. Your help with the program will greatly benefit students as they develop vital saving skills and also help our school with fundraising. Currently, School Banking day is Thursday, from approximately 8am until 8.45am, in the Library.

Our volunteer Co-ordinators, Cathie and Mandy, will be unable to continue at the end of this year when their children move on to High School so new volunteers are needed. If you are interested in volunteering for this great program, come into reception to collect a form to fill in or visit School Banking on Thursday morning to speak to Cathie and Mandy for more information. Please consider offering your support to keep this program running at Singleton Primary School.
