Sincerely in Christ,

Fr. Lawrence D’Anjou

Last week in this space I brought you up to speed with our “Building Our Future Together” capital campaign projects. There I covered our new early childhood center, new school office, new “St. Raymond Room” in Moran Hall and exciting new parish plaza. Space in last week’s column didn’t permit we to update you with status of improvements to the church interior, so here’s what we have for you as of today. We are working with CJK Designs of San Rafael to finalize design improvements for the church. They recently showed us a beautiful rendition of the new tabernacle reredos structure (enclosure) which will house a larger tabernacle that is church-sized (our current tabernacle, though lovely, is chapel-sized). They are finalizing the design for the mosaic that will fill the niche under the grand arch above the tabernacle. This mosaic will integrate colors from the church interior with some cooler, complimentary colors in the blue spectrum. The mosaic tiles will radiate out like rays from the heart of Jesus, who will be moved slightly higher so that his heart is centered within the semicircle under the arch, to beautiful effect. We have found a nice match for the travertine flooring stone in our church foyer and sanctuary, which will be used to make a visual and substantial connection from our entry area to the altar area down the main aisle. The floor outside the main aisle will receive new carpeting. Another

church enhancement we are looking into is the possibility of installing new colored art glass into the windows of the steeple high above the altar. We see the possibility of a beautiful new effect for our sanctuary as the morning sun pierces this colored glass, bringing colors down upon the grand arch and into the sanctuary space. Finally, we are looking at new overhead lighting and subtle spot lights to illuminate the Stations of the Cross surrounding the seating areas. St. Raymond School will open August 22, and we are working hard to have all the school-related elements of the project complete by then. We anticipate the plaza work to be completed by mid-September. The church interior time line is not yet finalized, but we hope to have these completed before Advent of this year. We are looking to early October to have an “Open House” to bless our new spaces and celebrate our improvements. Stay tuned for more on this… I want to thank our Maintenance Supervisor, Brian Whitaker, who is retiring from St. Raymond this month. Brian has served at St. Raymond since 2011 and in a maintenance capacity for the Diocese of Oakland for 21 years. St. Raymond facilities maintenance has really improved since Brian came on board. We all wish Brian many happy years in retirement and we thank him for being a wonderful contributor to our parish team. We welcome our new Maintenance Supervisor Jaime Salaverria. Jaime has experience as a general contractor and as a Catholic Parish Maintenance Supervisor. Jaime

and Brian have been working together for about a month so that Jaime can better transition to our parish. We believe Jaime along with our part-time maintenance staff Cristobal Ponce will make a terrific maintenance team for St. Raymond. There is another person I must thank here and that is our Business Manager, Eric Hom, for all his work related to the project. From the beginning with our Capital Campaign, to our working with the city of Dublin on our permits, to our working with our neighbors affected by our project, to our working on the nitty-gritty details of running a $3.6MM project, Eric has demonstrated professionalism, good judgment, patience and a positive attitude. I simply have no idea how we could have accomplished what we have without him. Thank you, Eric, for being such a good team player, Catholic man and asset to our parish. Finally, I want to again thank you, our St. Raymond parishioners, for your patience and support during our construction process. I also want to thank in a very special way the over 600 families who have pledged their hard-earned money to “Building Our Future Together.” Without you, we would have no reason to boast of the extraordinary improvements being realized here at St. Raymond, and which will bring blessings to us and our community for generations to come. Be assured of my prayers for all of you.

Gospel Reading

Luke 12:49-53 Background on the Gospel Reading Having reminded the apostles and the crowd that facing the coming judgment takes patience, Jesus now goes on to speak of how difficult it will be to wait. He tells them that he has come to set the earth on fire. Recall that in chapter 3 of Luke's Gospel, John the Baptist tells the crowd that he is baptizing with water, but someone mightier is coming who will baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire. The fire Jesus speaks of here is the distress caused by the coming judgment. It is also the fire of the Spirit that Luke, in the Acts of the Apostles, will describe descending on the disciples on Pentecost. That fire will strengthen them to go out to the whole world to preach the good news of Jesus' Resurrection. Jesus will be the first to experience the distress of the coming judgment. His baptism will be the conflict into which he will be immersed as he approaches Jerusalem and his death on the cross. His followers will not be spared that distress. The angels at Jesus' birth proclaimed peace on earth, and Simeon, holding the baby Jesus in the Temple, said to God: “Master,

now you may let your servant go in peace.” Here Jesus tells the crowd not to think he has come to bring peace; he has come to bring division. Simeon said as much when he turned to Mary and said that the child was destined for the rise and fall of many and to be a sign that will be contradicted. Peace is the ultimate end of the Kingdom of God, but peace has a price. Jesus is warning the crowd that wherever the Word of God is heard and acted upon, division occurs. Fathers will be divided against sons and mothers against daughters. The coming judgment forces us to look at the implications of our commitments. As Jesus warned in last Sunday's Gospel, a commitment of faith requires us to change our attitude toward material possessions and to take even more seriously our moral responsibilities. Here he reminds the crowd that those who commit to him will find it affects the way they relate to friends and family members. The angel who announced the birth of John the Baptist to Zechariah said John would go before Jesus to turn the hearts of fathers toward their children. But a commitment to Jesus forces us to change the way we live our lives, and this can put strains on relationships. We don't expect to hear such difficult words from Jesus in the Gospel. But it is good to be reminded once in a while that the decision to do the right thing, the good thing, is not always easy and without conflict. Jesus himself did not make easy decisions and avoid conflict. In today's reading, he reminds his followers to be prepared for difficult decisions and conflict

as well. Treasures from Our Traditions Long Ago, a signet ring was an essential part of the wardrobe of influential people. A letter or document would be sealed with hot wax, and a signet ring pressed into the wax would affirm the origin of the document. In the case of the people, at least from the 13th century, the ring was used to seal public documents with hot lead, saving the red wax for private letters. The public documents were called bullae after the Latin name for the lead stamp, and we still call them “papal bulls.” It is not surprising, therefore, that a signet ring has long been bestowed as part of the inauguration of a pope. The ring is called the Pescatorio, or “Ring of the Fisherman.” It reminds the wearer of his link with Peter, and his responsibility to continue the apostolic ministry of “fishing for human beings.” Until 1842 it actually functioned as a signet ring. Now, each pope receives a new gold ring at the beginning of his ministry. It goes on the fourth finger of his right hand and bears some fisherman design, usually St. Peter casting nets from a boat, as well as the pope’s name in Latin. A custom that endures for the pope, but not so much for the bishops, is for people being introduced to him to kiss the Pescatorio as a sign of respect for his teaching authority. Another enduring custom is for the ring to be mashed and defaced at the pope’s death, originally a way of preventing counterfeit deathbed documents. -Rev. James Field

few of the programs we support.

Although we could discuss many of these

programs, we will focus on the Global

Wheelchair Mission

In 2003, the Knights sent 2,000

wheelchairs to Afghanistan and since than

has sent over 53,000 wheelchairs to

places around the world. The Knights

purchase wheelchairs in bulk and can get

them considerably cheaper and ship them

around the world in a measured and

systematic way to maximize our efforts to

help others.

The St. Raymond Knights of Columbus

Dublin Council #7987, the Father John

Murphy Council, was established in 1982.

Our membership is approximately 240

and growing. We are an active Council

who supports the local community with

our time, talent, and experience. Our

fundraising allows us to support many

worthy causes. Each year, the council

votes on the Charities to sponsor. Some

of these charities include Shepherd’s

Gate, Hope Hospice of Dublin, Catholic

Charities of the East Bay, Open Heart

Kitchen, St. Vincent De Paul St. Raymond,

and many others.

Fundraising (treasure) includes:

July 4th Fireworks Booth, Lenten Fish

Frys, Crab Feed, St Patrick’s Dinner, Kettle

Corn Booth, and many others.

Community events (time and talent)

includes:

4th of July BBQ and New Year Eve’s party

for Livermore VA; Get on the Bus

Breakfast; SPRED Dinner; Tom

Grywczynski Memorial Blood Drive;

40days / 40 nights; Walk for Life; CYO

Free Throw Contest, and Red, Blue, and

Gold dinner Honoring Police, Fire, and 1st
