JD

STANDERTON - The vigilant action of Sakhile SAPS lead them to a well-known drug hotspot and the recovery of 11 bags of dagga.

The K9-unit made a random search of the premises where they found the dagga with an estima ted street value of R8 000. One person was promptly arrested and will appear in the Standerton Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 19 August.

The dagga was hidden in black shopping bags, which in turn was packed into a yellow carry-bag.

It was also ready to be repacked into smaller ‘street sachets’ from where it could be sold. Sergeant George Dhlamini, spokesperson for Sakhile SAPS, is very pleased that the dagga was found and that it could not make its way into the streets or into the hands of young children. JD

Drug hotspot busted

Eleven bags of Dagga, with an estimated street value of R8 000, was recovered by the Sakhile Police and the K9-unit. A drug hotspot was randomly searched when the stash was found.

Narrow escape

A panel van overturned due to a burst tyre leaving a passenger injured.

STANDERTON - Two occupants of a panel van had a narrow escape when one of the tyres burst and the van consequently overturned and rolled.

The accident happened on the Secunda road just 10 km outside Standerton on Saturday, 15 August.

According to the 37-year-old driver, he was driving towards Standerton when he heard a big bang and before he realised what was happening the van was already overturned and rolling. When the initial shock of what had just happened passed, he managed to free himself and his 31-year-old brother who was in the passenger seat.

The driver escaped without any injuries, but the passenger sustained serious injuries and was stabilized on the scene by paramedics before he was taken to hospital for further treatment.

It was later established that the rear left tyre had burst causing the van to overturn. Police on the scene confirmed that the accident was indeed caused by a burst tyre.

The vehicle was quickly moved to the side of the road to avoid a buildup of traffic. DM

STANDERTON - Mpumalanga traffic inspectors acted swiftly to avoid an accident that was bound to happen on the road when they pulled over a truck that was heavily loaded with scrap metal destined for Gauteng last week. Traffic inspectors spotted a truck travelling from KwaZulu-Natal on the R23 through Meyerville.

The driver was pulled from the road and escorted to Standerton Police Station where he was given a heavy penalty for risking his own life and that of the other motorists on that road.

He was also ordered to offload some scrap metal to a reasonable load-size before he was allowed to move on. DM

DK

Therefore, the promise comes by faith so that it may be by grace and may be guaranteed to all Abraham’s offspring – not only to those who are of the law, but also to those who have the faith of Abraham. He is the father of us all. God’s grace is His undeserved, unearned and unmerited favour and because it is undeserved, unearned and unmerited, all of us who have made Him our personal Lord and Saviour, qualify for it. The question is how do we practice walking in it? Just as a password gives you access to a computer program, faith enables you to walk in God’s unmerited favour. Faith has nothing to do with what you do or what you can do. Faith is simply believing and declaring what God has done through the cross and is doing for you at the right hand of God right now. When you believe that the favour of God is on you because of Christ’s finished work, His promises of provision, healing and restoration become a reality to you – like you know and believe that the sun will rise tomorrow, you can trust that your breakthrough is also on its way.

His promises and blessings are not just sure to the Jews, but also to you and me because we are “of the faith of Abraham.” Ruth was a Gentile widow who put her faith in God’s grace. She believed and declared that God’s favour would lead her to the right field in which to glean, where she would find favour in the owner’s sight. (Ruth 2:2) Because she depended on God’s unmerited favour, God not only placed her in wealthy Boaz’s field, but also in the genealogy of Jesus! (Matthew 1:5)

Ruth’s faith in God’s favour opened up a whole new world for her. She went from poverty to supply, widowhood to marriage and from being childless to having a complete family. She also became a respected member of the community. (Ruth 4:13-15) If Ruth, a Gentile who was under the old covenant, enjoyed God’s favour, how much more will we who are under the new covenant of grace enjoy the blessings that the unmerited favour of God brings! In fact, because God sees us in the Beloved today, we enjoy the same favour that Jesus has! (Ephesians 1:3-6)

My friend, when you believe that you have the same favour that Jesus has, a whole new world will open up to you – a world where all of God’s promises are “Yes” and “Amen” in Christ! (2 Corinthians 1:20)

(Romans 4:16 New International Version)

“You have the same favour Jesus has”

STANDERTON - Sergeant George Dhlamini of Sakhile SAPS spoke to the children of Jandrell Secondary School in Sakhile on Friday, 14 August. This forms part of the awareness campaign where high school pupils will be informed on the dangers of drugs and it is held in conjunction with SASSA end COGTA.

Attention and comments reached a high when Sergeant Dhlamini produced some drugs so the children can see what they look like. Dhlamini also stated that different drugs cause different feelings and physical responses and that people respond differently to the same drugs. Drugs can either be swallowed, inhaled or injected and can be divided in three categories: Uppers (cocaine, ecstasy, speed, crack), downers (alcohol, dagga, heroin, mandrax) or hallucinogens (LSD, mescaline).

The more drugs you take, the more you will need. The first time you take a drug, you will probably experience an exhilarating high. As your body gets used to the drug, you will need more of the drug to experience the same intense reaction. This increasing tolerance to a drug is actually a growing addiction, and such an addiction comes with a big price tag.

However tempting it may be, using drugs to take a break from reality will not make your problems disappear or make life better. No matter how much trouble you think you will be in if you ask for help, you will be in worse trouble if you do not ask for help. Saying no to drugs takes courage and strength. Taking drugs takes your life. JD

The water reservoir in Kosmos Park is open with no sign of any lockable apparatus in sight. Not even the ladder giving access to the drinking water of most of the town is locked.

STANDERTON - A resident in Kosmos Park, Elna Engelbrecht, as well as several other of her neighbours in Wildebeest Avenue, are up in arms over the drawn-out water crisis they are facing. They are now without running water for more than 25 days.

According to Engelbrecht, they already had a meeting with Lekwa Local Municipality who informed them that the pumps are not strong enough to supply them with water. Shortly after the meeting, they had water for roughly two weeks, where after the water once again dried up.

Ms Engelbrecht has to look after her elderly parents and she herself had a hip replacement and as a result cannot carry heavy cans of water for personal and hygienic use. She also stated that, should the municipality send a water truck, this truck races past their dwellings without stopping or delivering water.

Elna already turned to various councillors and AfriForum, but is still left in the dust, so to speak. JD

The dangers of drugs

Sergeant George Dhlamini of Sakhile SAPS addresses the students at Jandrell Secondary School in Sakhile on the subject of drug and substance abuse. Drug dealers will never tell you that you cannot control your response to the drug, or what the drug actually contains. He urged the students to blow the whistle on drug dealers and said that the SAPS understands that they fear for their lives, but they may report such activities anonymously.

Concern over open reservoir

STANDERTON - The water reservoir (Concor) adjacent to Kosmos Park is almost filled to the brim, but what raises concern is the fact that the steel door that is supposed to be locked at all times, is missing. This open hole gives free access to all kinds of rubbish to be blown into the water. Even birds and insects drown in the water.

The steel ladder giving access to the top of the structure is also not locked and anyone could potentially climb on top and drop whatever they want into the drinking water of most of the town. At this stage residents are already up in arms due to the water problems with one resident in Wildebees Avenue who has been without water for 25 days. When the water is available in our homes, you are too scared to drink it as you are not sure what it contains. As the highly paid media spokesperson for the municipality decided not to speak to Cosmos News, they were not asked for any comments, but at least the residents now know what they may expect to get from their taps. JD

Still no water

STANDERTON - Many employees from the Department of Water Affairs held a safety indaba at the River Park on Friday, 14 August.

Speaking on behalf of the employees Mr GS Msweli said: “Safety and good health are a priority at the work place. It was imperative that they come together and revisit the safety aspects at the workplace and encouraged others to work safely at all times.

Health and wellness also took centre stage during the Indaba. All safety representatives from different sections of the 300-member workforce participated. The Indaba was followed by a variety of recreational activities.

After all was over and done with, participants enjoyed the day with a braai and refreshments. DM

STANDERTON - On Friday, 14 August, 169 students from Gert Sibande TVET College Standerton Campus received national certificates during a glitzy graduation ceremony held in the college hall.

The certificates were awarded to the class of 2014 who completed their training in civil and electrical engineering and business studies.

Campus Manager, Mr N Govender, welcomed all the attendees by saying: “Today is the most important event of the GS College calendar as we honour our national certificate vocational students who have successfully

completed level 2, 3 and 4 while passing all the subjects.”

Ms Vivian Shabangu, a well known dynamic and vibrant physiotherapist in Standerton delivered the keynote address. “Congratulations to all of you for the academic success that you celebrate today, graduation is one of those noble steps in life that defines a coming of age, the ending of one era of life,” she said.

Naturally you have firm plans and good ideas of what is coming next in your life, but let me hasten to mention that life doesn’t usually follow the plans you have made out

for yourself, you will experience the ups and downs of life but you have to strive to be the best you want to be.”

National certificate vocational enrolment in 2007 was 475 and today 4 800 students have enrolled. Standerton campus was the best performing college out of five colleges in the Gert Sibande district.

The college certificate awarding rate moved from 16% in 2007 to 55% in 2014. JE Mthombeni was awarded a trophy for being the best performing student in civil engineering and NA Zulu, received the same accolade in office administration. DM

STANDERTON - The Department of Justice and Constitutional Development embarked on a child maintenance awareness campaign, with reference to maintenance Act 99 of 1998. The day’s motto was “My child’s future is my priority, I pay maintenance.” An ongoing national campaign took place at Sakhile hall on Friday, 14 August. The event was spearheaded by Mpumalanga provincial Chief Magistrate, Mrs T Tonjeni, accompanied by the provincial Director in the department, Mr P Mthimunye and a host of senior advocates including NPA advocate, V Mafolo, who presented a brief mission statement of the event to five hundred community members in attendance.

The campaign was about the fundamental rights of the child as entrenched in the constitution of the Republic of South Africa: The right to a home; the right to health; the right to education as well as the right to maintenance and protection against any form of abuse. Section 28 of the constitution gives rise to all inclusive rights of children, and in the same breath, child Act No 38 of 2005 provided

a children’s court which deals with issues such as children who are abandoned, neglected, or abused and above all the right to be heard.

Advocate J Nkosi deliberated on child maintenance where the state is taking a strong stand against men who fail their obligation to maintain their children. With the assistance of the children’s court, men like those are subjected to prosecution that may lead to a prison sentence. Furthermore Advocate Nkosi, encouraged mothers to report men who fail to take on their responsibilities, at their local magistrate’s court.

All the information in the presentation was available on leaflets printed in indigenous languages for people to read at home and pass along to others.

Based on questions asked by the attendees, “it became evident that the community has been empowered,” the chief magistrate, Mrs Tonjeni, said.

The event was graced by delegates from sister departments such the Department of Social Services. DM

BETHAL - Given Thokozani Mahlangu (22), also known as ‘Given K’, started to learn to play the piano at a very young age by playing at church. As he was part of the church band, many people believed that he was destined for gospel, but to him that was not the case.

His passion for house music overruled everything and has, since then, been playlisted on several community radio

stations, namely Vukani Community Radio, Mdantsane Community Radio, Nkangala Community Radio, Barberton Community Radio, Ubuthebe FM Live, VKRS Radio, In2radio, Wild Coast Community Radio and Radio Riverside.

Avenue is Given K’s first official solo release. He has been in the culture of being a DJ since 2010 and he has shared stages with many local and national artists.

On Friday 14 August, he was interviewed on Radio Riverside and the past two weeks he was a hot topic in the Mpumalanga news. His single is also available on Simfy Africa and on eXactmobile for downloads and soon he will be available for caller tunes.

His music manager and promoter, John Tsepo Simelane, is very proud of this artist and confident that Given K is on the road to fame. JD

A new kid on the block…

The name Given Keys (Given K) come from this young artist’s strong piano background. “Being a DJ you see a lot of things happening at night, things that you do not see people doing during the day. It’s a scary world out there,” Given K said.

Chris de Beer wat SuidAfrika
