2.1 Notes: What is Matter?

Main Idea 1: Chemistry is the study of the composition, structure, properties, and changes of matter.

Page 2: 2.1 Notes: What is Matter? Main Idea 1: Chemistry is the study of the composition, structure, properties, and changes of matter.

Matter

Define: Anything thathas mass & takes up space!

Examples: You, Air, Water,Space station, atoms, beards

Page 3: 2.1 Notes: What is Matter? Main Idea 1: Chemistry is the study of the composition, structure, properties, and changes of matter.

Atom

Define: The smallest unit of an element. Basic matter!

Examples: Hydrogen, Oxygen,

Calcium, Gold, Neon

Main Idea 2: Matter can be classifiedBased on its properties.

Classifying Matter

Pure Substance

Describe: Has a fixed composition, definite properties, & cannot be physically separated ex’s: water, sugar, chlorine gas.

Page 6: 2.1 Notes: What is Matter? Main Idea 1: Chemistry is the study of the composition, structure, properties, and changes of matter.

Pure Substance

Element

Describe: Matter in which all atoms are the same.

ex’s: nitrogen, iron

Pure Substance

Compound

Describe: Made of two or more elements chemically united.

ex’s: water, salt, sugar

Mixtures grapes + sugar + water

Describe: A combo of two or more pure substances that can be physically separated.

Page 9: 2.1 Notes: What is Matter? Main Idea 1: Chemistry is the study of the composition, structure, properties, and changes of matter.

Heterogeneous Mixture Describe: Mixture that has 2 or more distinguishable parts & can easily be physically separated. ex: salad, mixed candies

Homogeneous Mixture Describe: Mixture of 2 or more substances that cannot be not easily separated & all looks the same. ex: grape juice, mixed batter
