Corporate Maldives GOLD 100 Gala was held at Kurumba

Maldives on 21st February 2017, attended by over 150

top level executives from the leading companies of the

Maldives and VIP guests.

The Gala is the foremost and the most exclusive invite-

only business networking event in the Maldives, where

the leading 100 companies selected from among 10,000

companies registered in the country were presented with

special awards as recognition for their diligent work and

success. The Lifetime Achievement Awards were also

presented during the GOLD 100 Gala to two entrepreneurs

who helped shape the tourism and hospitality industry; Mr.

Mohamed Umar Maniku and Mr. Hussain Afeef.

The Platinum Partner of the Gala was Bank of Maldives

PLC, and Mr. Andrew John Healy, Chief Executive

Officer and Managing Director of BML, joined the event.

Representatives of the Gold Partners of the Gala also

attended the event; Mr. Ismail Rasheed, CEO of Dhiraagu;

Mr. Mohamed Ahmed, GM of Allied Insurance; Mr. Abdulla

Saheel Jaleel, Deputy MD of MWSC and Mr. Shifau Ali,

General Manager of MTCC.

GOLD 100 was supported by Ministry of Finance & Treasury,

Maldives Monetary Authority, Maldives Stock Exchange &

Capital Market Development Authority.

“Gold 100” is the first initiative of its kind in the Maldives

which provided a listing, categorized by industry, along

with profiles of the leading 100 businesses in the country,

and the GOLD 100 Gala is a highly exclusive networking

event for the top executives in the Maldives to introduce,

interact and mingle and form new business relationships.

The major objective of GOLD 100 and GOLD 100 Gala is

to distinguish and appreciate the work done by prolific

leaders of the business community in the Maldives,

without whom the country’s economy and society would

not have reached the status that it has today.

The GOLD 100 awards were presented to the GOLD

100 companies by special VIP guests of the Gala;

Chief Guest, Maldives Monetary Authority Governor Dr.

Azeema Adam; Mr. Kurush Dastoor, Director and Head

of Partner Card Services, South Asia, American Express;

Mr. Mohamed Hussain Maniku, Chief Executive Officer of

Maldives Pension Administration Office and Ms. Maryam

Visam, Ministry of Economic Development’s Registrar of

Companies.

“I take this opportunity to express my profound

appreciation to the business community of the country,

especially the GOLD 100 companies in the Maldives,” Dr.

MAJOR OBJECTIVES GALA OVERVIEW

Azeema Adam said during her speech. “Congratulations

for making it to the list of high achievers. In particular,

it has been my great honor to present the Lifetime

Achievement Awards. This award is only a token

celebration of the achievements of two true legends,

Mr. Mohamed Umar Maniku and Mr. Hussain Afeef, who

pioneered and designed the Maldivian tourism brand.”

Mr. Maniku accepted the award and expressed his

appreciation via a video message, since he was unable

to attend to collect the award in person due to personal

reasons.

Mr. Afeef accepted the Lifetime Achievement Award

and gave a short but emotional and heartfelt speech

afterwards.

“Forty-four years ago, I was coming to this island in a

sailing boat with knives, rope and pieces of wood to make

the first room for the first guests who were coming to the

first resort in the Maldives,” Mr. Afeef said. “So for me to

be here in Kurumba tonight, at such a special occasion

and getting this award is very emotional for me.”

Mr. Afeef went on to highlight the numerous challenges

he and his colleagues had faced during the beginning

of the tourism industry in Maldives and how they had

overcome the various challenges.

“If you come across a problem, just go around it. Be

flexible enough to work around things, because that’s

the only way to succeed,” Mr. Afeef concluded, receiving

a standing ovation from the enthralled audience when he

stepped away from the podium.

The event concluded with a dinner, giving attendees the

time to network, exchange cards and make new business

contacts. Corporate Maldives GOLD 100 Gala was an

immense success and the largest networking event of its

kind to have taken place in the Maldives.

Mr. Afeef said.
