A Change in Our Outreach Relationships

† God is so good! Amen?! For a number of years now, St. Tim’s has partnered with COAST (Crisis Outreach And Support Team) here in ABQ in order to help our neighbors in need. Through your weekly contributions at St. Tim’s and your special giving just for COAST we have been able to help women and children leaving abusive situations, those stranded in ABQ be reunited with family in other parts of the country, families and individuals avoid homelessness with emergency housing assistance, and in countless other ways. Beginning this summer, 2018, COAST began changing their approach. While they still assist people in crisis situations, their process has become a bit more cumbersome for churches like ours to help. While we continue to respond to COAST’s direct requests for assistance, those requests are now few and far between. As a result, we have deepened our relationship with St. Martin’s HopeWorks and their new partnership with COAST in outreach to our community. The St. Tim’s council voted this summer to allow the release of COAST funds to the work of St. Martin’s HopeWorks when they were working in partnership with COAST to serve our neighbors in need. Just this week, through the new process, we were able to help an elderly gentleman struggling with mental illness complete his process of acquiring sustainable housing, thanks be to God! As we move forward in building bridges and working alongside other ABQ organizations for the sake of our neighbors, we will remain as flexible as possible to follow where the Spirit leads. Thanks be to God for your generosity to those in need among us and for the opportunity to be a part of God’s life-transforming work in the world! In Christ, Pr. Rachael

De- escalation Training

Thank you to everyone who participated in the De- escalation Training offered by the Albuquerque Police Department here at St. Tim's on Sunday, October 1 4th.

The feedback from the event was great! There were many requests for a handout or something to help folks remember what they learned. APD has sent St. Tim's a copy of the Powerpoint used in the presentation and it is available for anyone upon request. Please contact the church office at 255-8001 or [email protected] if you'd like a hard copy or would like it emailed to you. Thanks be to God for this opportunity!

Thanks to everyone who participated in our ELCA Social Statement on Women’s Justice discussion groups! We had 3 group meetings, all of which were well attended and had lively discussion. We compiled the results and submitted it to the ELCA. If you would like to read the document we submitted, it is posted on our St Tim’s web site.

♦ Women’s Refugee Group – Next Gathering on Sunday, November 19th, 5 – 7 p. m.

St. Tim's hosted the second meeting of the African Refugee Women on Sun., Oct. 28th; the women attending had a lot of fun learning social introductions and are enthusiastic to continue the growing the group! The vision of the group came from Chantal Muhumure, with the help of Phyllis Harper-Rispoli, Debby Morrell, and Pastor Rachael. Other volunteers: Neva Beasley, Barbara Blackwell, Julie Stringer, and Barbara Parissi. The Women's Refugee Group is a support and life skills group. The women are mainly Swahili speakers from Africa, and often speak multiple languages. We don't yet know all of the needs of the group, but anticipate that future meetings teaching the women skills that would be applicable to the their daily lives and concerns, also to teach them life and job skills. At each meeting we plan to have an ESL learning component that requires English speakers (like yourself) to facilitate small groups. We will also have a life skill presentation component from various speakers throughout Albuquerque. We Are Seeking Volunteers! You do NOT need to be experienced to work with the group. We will seek training, as needed. At this time, all you need is interest in helping the effort. If you have any questions or are interested in volunteering, please contact Phyllis Harper-Rispoli at [email protected], 505-269-1630; and or contact Chantal Muhumure at [email protected], 336-508-0112 after 2:30.

♦ St. Tim’s Book Club - Will meet Friday, December 7th, 6 p. m. at Ron and Marie Henkel’s home:

91 2 Sierra Drive SE.

We are reading The Fire Next Time by James Baldwin. From Amazon.com’s description: A national bestseller when it first appeared in 1963, The Fire Next Time galvanized the nation and gave passionate voice to the emerging civil rights movement. At once a powerful evocation of James Baldwin's early life in Harlem and a disturbing examination of the consequences of racial injustice, the book is an intensely personal and provocative document. It consists of two "letters," written on the occasion of the centennial of the Emancipation Proclamation, that exhort Americans, both black and white, to attack the terrible legacy of racism. Described by The New York Times Book Review as "sermon, ultimatum, confession, deposition, testament, and chronicle...all presented in searing, brilliant prose," The Fire Next Time stands as a classic of our literature.

Everyone is welcome to be part of the Book Club! Please join us!
