Look at theevent information for your year group and subject areasthey cover. If you already have a clear idea of the careeryou want to follow a specialist event might be right foryou. If you are undecided a more general event will giveyou the chance to try many different subject areas. Readthe overview of the universities/colleges you areinterested in and check out their websites. If you are notsure where they are in the West Midlands, check out thelocation map inside the front cover. Ask your teacher or college lecturer about it. UniFest is the name for UniversitySummer Schools in the West Midlands. It’s a FREE opportunity for you to seewhat student life is like at one of 14universities and colleges across theWest Midlands. At a UniFest event youwill get to meet university studentsand staff, make new friends and havean action packed, fun experience. Aswell as helping you decide whether ornot to go to university, it could be thebest thing you will do all summer!

What will I do?That depends on which university andevent you choose. As the namesuggests, UniFest is a festival ofuniversity life and learning, and with 14universities and colleges and 25 eventsyou have a lot to choose from. Readingthis Directory you will see that UniFestevents vary in length from 2 days to 5days, and that most are residential.

Events can take place in term-time orduring the summer holiday. Some giveyou the chance to explore a range ofsubjects and courses, and others focusin on certain career or study options. Some are for young people in a singleYear Group and others are for mixedage-groups. But all UniFest events willshow you what university life is like, and give you the chance to developyour skills and self confidence.

You can view photos, videos and link toall 14 UniFest universities by visiting ourwebsite: www.unifestwm.co.uk

Parents/CarersHow much will it cost?UniFest is FREE. If you do have to payfor travel to an event the university orcollege will send you full details of howto claim it back.

Why do you needto know aboutmy educationand workbackground? The government pays for these eventsso that young people whoseparents/carers have not been touniversity or who do not haveprofessional jobs can find out moreabout higher education. Statisticsshow that young people from thesebackgrounds are much less likely to gointo higher education and theprofessions.

Will my child be safe?YES - all the activities that your childwill take part in are fully risk assessed.Your child will be supervised byqualified staff and trained students allof whom have been checked by theCriminal Records Bureau (CRB). Mostuniversities and colleges only allowunsupervised time for yr 12 studentsand even then they are not allowed toleave the University campus. Securitystaff are on hand at all times of thenight and day.

Where will mychild be staying? If the UniFest event is residential yourchild will stay at the university orcollege, in halls of residence, just likereal students. CRB approved staff andstudents also stay overnight tosupervise things.

What if my childbecomes ill?We will contact you, using the detailsyou have provided on theapplication/consent form. It isimportant that you tell us if thesechange before the event.

How can Icontact my child? You will be given emergency contactdetails for the university or college inthe run up to the event. Students cantake mobile phones but do so at theirown risk, and they will have to beturned off during planned sessions.

What will mychild need tobring?Themselves! The universities will giveyou details of the type and amount ofclothing and other personal belongingsthey will need.

What happens if my childmisbehaves? The universities and colleges issue acode of conduct which each student

signs at the start of their event. If theybreak the code discussions take place, and if things can’t be agreed a decisionis made about whether the studentshould be sent home. You will be keptinformed throughout.

Here are some of the comments madeby parents from previous events:

Young PeopleWill I have to doreal work?UniFest is not like school. It is yourchance to see what student life andstudy is all about...so YES you will beexpected to take part in all plannedsessions, but the universities andcolleges will make it exciting andinteresting.

Will I be with myfriends?Often friends from the school or collegego to the same events, but a big part ofUniFest is meeting new people andmaking new friends...just like studentsstarting at university do. DON’TWORRY! Everyone feels a little nervous, but university staff and students willhelp break the ice, and most people endup with lots of new friends.

What sort ofclothes should I wear?Casual clothes are appropriate for mostof the time. You may want to takesportswear and something a littlesmarter for evening activities.

Where will I eat?All your meals will be provided. You will eat in the universityrefectories/canteens, or have packedlunches if you are out on an activity.

ProfessionalsWhich learnersshould Iencourage to apply? You will probably know the learners youthink would benefit most from UniFest, and the Aimhigher partnership in yourarea will help you identify those thatmeet disadvantage criteria. Rememberthat high priority is given to learnerswith disabilities and / or learningdifficulties and young people in the caresystem. And please try to encouragemale students to apply....in 2010 65% ofapplicants were female!

Is there anyflexibility on age groups? Each event is designed to be ageappropriate and some are open toyoung people from different YearGroups. However, many are age-specific and it is important learnersonly apply to events advertised for theYear Group they are in at the time ofapplying.

What should I put in mysupportingstatement?Include any information on the youngperson’s background that shows howyou think attending will benefit them.If a young person you are working withdoes not meet our targeting criteriathey may still be given a place if youcan demonstrate they have anexceptional level of need.

Some events arein term-time.Why shouldapplicants missschool orcollege? This is because universities andcolleges often have other activitiessuch as conferences during the holidayperiod. If UniFest events clash withactivities at your school or collegeplease consider what is in the bestinterest of the young person...a UniFestevent may be more helpful than a workexperience placement for a learner who is not considering employment at 16 or 19.

Will I have to arrangetransport for my learners? No. Learners and their parent/carersapply for UniFest events. Teachers andcollege lecturers support this, but theuniversities make all otherarrangements directly with applicantsand their families. The event listings(pages 8 to 49) details each universities’transport and hand-over arrangement.

What happensafter learnersapply? We will write to all applicants in lateApril 2011, to let them know whichevent they have been allocated to. Wewill also provide every school andcollege with a report listing the

outcomes for their applicants. Theuniversities and colleges get in touchwith applicants in the run up to theevents, and Aimhigher will keep youinformed of any changes or otherimportant information.

What do otherprofessionalsthink about it?Here are just some of the commentsmade by the teachers and lecturers of UniFest attendees:

“Two of my studentshave been on theirsummer schools and Ijust wanted to let youknow how much theyenjoyed them.
