The standards for K-12 were developed by the National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers and introduced as a requirement to seek federal education monies.

They are based on the idea that all elementary and secondary students should learn certain skills and information no matter where they live.

The standards are informed by the highest, most effective models from states across the country and countries around the world, and provide teachers and parents with a common understanding of what students are expected to learn. Consistent standards will provide appropriate benchmarks for all students, regardless of where they live.

Common Core Standards define the knowledge and skills students should have within their K-12 education careers so that they will graduate high school able to succeed in entry-level, credit-bearing academic college courses and in workforce training programs. The standards:◦ Are aligned with college and work expectations;◦ Are clear, understandable and consistent;◦ Include rigorous content and application of knowledge

through high-order skills;◦ Build upon strengths and lessons of current state

standards;◦ Are informed by other top performing countries, so that

all students are prepared to succeed in our global economy and society; and

◦ Are evidence-based.

MATH - The math standards are divided by grade level from kindergarten through eighth grade. For high school, the standards cover six areas: number and quantity, algebra, functions, modeling, geometry and statistics and probability.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS - The English language arts standards are divided by grade level and represent a “staircase” of increasing complex skills and content that includes reading -- literature, information text and foundational skills -- as well as speaking and listening, writing, and language.

HISTORY, SOCIAL STUDIES AND SCIENCE - At the high school level, the standards address reading history and social studies as well as science and technical material. However, they don't address particular content students should master in those areas.

One component of graduation requirements for the Class of 2020 is scoring proficient or advanced on the Algebra 1, Biology, andLiterature Keystone Exams.

The Keystone Exams will be administered two times each year-winter and spring.

Students enrolled in specific courses will be testing during specific test administration windows.

What is assessed on the Keystone Exam?

Each Keystone Exam is organized into two major Reporting Categoriesknown as modules. Each module is organized around specific Eligible Content within a subject area. Eligible Content is the standards that are assessed on the Keystone Exam.

How long is a Keystone Exam?Each exam should take a student approximately 1.5 to 2 hours to complete. There are two modules on each test. The exams will include multiple-choice questions and constructed response or open-ended responses. For each Keystone Exam, 60%-75% of the total score will be from multiple-choice questions and 25%-40% of the total score will be from constructed response questions.

Recent letter sent to parents about Keystone graduation requirement.

Class of 2020 will need to pass the Keystone Exams, or an equivalent.

This equivalent (formerly the Project Based Assessment) has not yet been defined.

Ninth grade math will consist of two courses, one each semester for a total of two credits.

The focus of the courses will be Algebra concepts. The course will be a combination of Algebra I and II curriculum.

A student must earn a 70% to enroll in the next math course in the sequence. If a student fails Algebra I , he or she must retake that course before they can enroll in Algebra II. This could also delay when a student takes the Keystone Algebra I Exam.

A student must pass Algebra I before he or she can take the Algebra I Keystone Exam.

The students will take the Keystone Algebra I Exam in the Winter Administration Testing session.

If a student is not proficient on the exam, he or she must retake the exam. Once a student passes the two math courses, he or she may enroll in the next math course.

English I (ninth grade English) will consist of one yearlong course for a total of two credits.

The focus of the course will be on the following: vocabulary development, writing conventions, reading skills in both fiction and nonfiction, literary analysis, and speaking and listening skills.

A student must be passing English I before he or she can take the Literature Keystone Exam, which will be administered during the spring semester.

If a student is not proficient on the exam, he or she must be remediated and can then retake the exam. Once a student passes the English I course, he or she may enroll in English II, regardless of proficiency on the Literature Keystone Exam.

Ninth Graders will be required to take Biology.

The students will take the Biology Keystone Exam during the semester he or she is enrolled in the course.

Some students will enroll in Honors Earth Science.

These students will take the Biology Keystone Exam following the completion of Honors Biology in eleventh grade.

Boiling Springs High School functions on a semester basis and utilizes a block schedule.

Each class period is 80 minutes in length. Full credit courses meet every day for one

semester (with some exceptions ie. AP World History).

One-half credit courses meet every other day for one semester.

At the end of the first semester, students begin a new schedule of courses for the second semester.

At Boiling Springs, students are required to pass a total of 30 credits in order to be eligible to graduate and demonstrate proficiency on three Keystone Exams. The credits include 23 or 24 of core courses. All students are required to schedule 8 credits per year for a total of 32 credits during their 8 high school semesters. The following graduation requirements are listed below:

At Boiling Springs, grade 9 students are required to schedule 8 credits for the year. The following requirements are listed below:
