Workshop Focus The pace of change in the world is accelerating, and teachers and administrators must lead the charge. At 21st Century Skills Workshop, attendees learn teacher-friendly strategies to use problem-based learning, clear communication, and metacognitive reflection to inspire and engage students.
The team of presenters shows how to design tomorrow’s learning using the latest social, learning, and neuroscience research on critical thinking, multitasking, multimodal learning, collaboration, and engagement. They show how high-tech tools can extend students’ thinking, creating a place to explore ideas, research questions, test hypotheses, compose thoughts, and come to conclusions.
These tools serve as vehicles for collaboration and authenticity—two highly effective learning accelerators that can sharpen thinking and pique intellectual curiosity. With practical methods and an eye on the future, teachers can weave these far-reaching skills into any instructional repertoire.
Educators at this workshop can ensure students are prepared to step up, both as better learners and as the new generation of productive global citizens.

“I learned several things I could take back to my school and start working on with my team. I’m not sure I’ve ever been able to say that about a workshop. Really had a good time and am looking forward to more!”

Session Descriptions William M. Ferriter
Doing Work That Matters
Are classrooms failing our students? The current classroom structure focuses on the easiest parts of the learning interaction—information acquisition, basic skills, and analysis. With learning being relegated to the quantifiable, only easily scored and identified accomplishments are recognized. Classrooms must be reimagined as places where students connect and collaborate to do work that matters. Join this session to learn how technology can be used to create highly engaged learning environments for today’s student. Garfield Gini‐Newman
Critical, Creative, and Collaborative Inquiry for the 21st Century
For schools to remain relevant in an information age, the focus for learning must shift from acquiring knowledge to using knowledge to solve meaningful problems. Placing critical inquiry at the heart of learning will be necessary to successfully support students in developing intellectual tools and engage them with authentic challenges. Explore opportunities for digitally enhanced learning, and discover how to effectively use technology to nurture critical, creative, and collaborative inquiry. Cheryl Lemke
Personalized Learning and Digital Innovations
Educators have been attempting to personalize learning for decades—and now it’s possible due to affordable, reliable technologies. So why isn’t it happening? We need a spirit of innovation among school leaders to redesign learning environments with a focus on students—their interests, ideas, and learning preferences. Explore the opportunities and challenges of digital learning, and discover how to implement personalized learning that will deepen understanding across the curriculum. Will Richardson
Teaching and Learning in an Age of Abundance
Two trillion webpages. Two billion people connected online. We’ve transitioned from a world where access to information, knowledge, and teachers was relatively scarce to a world of abundance. This dramatically changes the way we think about education and what kids need to flourish. Explore the shifts from scarcity to abundance as they apply to learning, and start down a path of deep, modern learning for yourself and your students.
