21st December 2018 Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award

Isabel Reed (pictured), Charlotte Cartwright (pictured), Thomas Hodgson & Eleanor Burkes, recent

DSHS alumni, were invited to St James’ Palace in London on Thursday 6th December 2018 to collect

their DofE Gold Awards from the Duke of York, HRH Prince Andrew. Their DofE Gold Award

recognised regular training, commitment to weekly activities, a residential week as well as four day

expeditions in challenging terrain in Snowdonia, North Wales and the Lake District.

Isabel volunteered within school, assisting in the Modern Foreign Languages department, played

table tennis for her physical activity and was part of a team of girls that created a robot and then

entered it in a national competition.

Charlotte volunteered her time for the charity Acorns Children’s Hospice, played a range of racquet

sports for her physical activity and regularly baked fabulous cakes for her skill development.

Thomas volunteered at Himbleton C of E First School where he supported children in developing their

reading and social skills. His physical activity of Tae Kwon Do was very impressive and he achieved his

3rd Degree Black Belt during the Award. During his skill section, Thomas developed his piano playing

and worked up to his Grade 8 examination.

Eleanor is a DofE Bronze, Silver and now Gold Award holder. In her Gold Award, she was commended

for her volunteering with young children at a local nursery, took part in weekly yoga sessions and

researched British medieval history as part of an extended project.

Mr Tibbits and the DofE Team congratulates them wholeheartedly for completing their awards.

Year 11

Members of Year 11 Tutor groups have taken part in a

‘Reverse Advent Calendar’ this month. This involved

students bringing in items of food each day throughout

December. There has been a great response to this

and our thanks go to students and their families for

their generosity. The donations will be presented to

Droitwich Food Bank during our end of term assembly.

Science Revision My GCSE Science is a revision resource provided by the school for Year 11 students to use. This week, the students who have made the best use of it are Sophie McCammon, Daisy Neale, Kimran Sohal, Jake Wakefield, Calum Green, Matthew Gurr, Aaron Cheung, Jenny Latta, Matthew Strange and Leah Heath.

Hair and Beauty

Charlie Conroy has had to create an image as part of her Level 1 Hair and Beauty course. First of all

she decided on A Natural Wedding, researching and creating a mood board that would produce as

natural looking a bride as possible. Several of these ideas were taken and used by a member of staff

for her own wedding in the summer. Charlie then decided she would rather do something a little

more exotic and went on to create a mood board for an Indian wedding, using her friend Siobhanne

Carroll as a model. During the course of an afternoon Siobhanne was transformed into this

glamorous bride and the event was assessed by Charlie’s hairdressing tutor. Charlie passed the

assessment with flying colours.

Success for Year 10/11 Girls Football Team

The Year 10 and 11 girls’ football went to Kidderminster Harriers training ground on a frosty morning.

With 12 teams competing overall, in 3 groups,

Droitwich dominated the group stages scoring 14

goals and only conceding 4, convincingly making it

to the semi-finals. Rebecca Finch and Georgia

Strange were the main goal scorers in the group

stages. In the semi-final Lucy King and Yazmin

Bryant gave an excellent defensive display with

some fine saves from Lizzie Kindness. A solid 4 – 1

victory set them up for the final. In the final, an

amazing team goal, finished by Jess Hood and a

brace for Layla Hart led to the team’s comfortable

6 – 2 win. The students’ attitude was excellent

throughout the tournament and they were well-deserved winners.

Team – Leah Heath, Georgia Strange, Lizzie Kindness, Lucy King, Leah Wetherby, Megan Normoyle,

Layla Hart, Yazmin Bryant, Jess Hood, Rebecca Finch.

in the County competition on Saturday 19th January at the University of Worcester Lakeside Campus.

their own piece of Nazi-style propaganda and the results have been outstanding examples of

creativity and hard work. Particularly impressive were:

Talia Widdowson, Thea Duncan, Aleksandra Ogorek – for outstanding artistic skills

Grace Wardley, Leila Whitehouse, Ben James, Callum Boyce – for superb practical creativity
