What is the Roald Dahl Festival?Roald Dahl’s legendary language is famed throughout the world and our festival is all about honouring the wondercrump legacy of Mr Dahl himself. It’s a chance to celebrate and showcase Dahl’s words, language and imagination over a week jam packed full of short performances based on everyone’s favourite Roald Dahl tales.
Over 6 action packed days at Newcastle’s own Civic Playhouse you’ll get the opportunity to perform and watch a swag of scrumdiddliumptious short performance pieces all paying tribute to the great man himself. Roald Dahl Festival comprises of almost 20 events and showcases the region’s most talented performers. This Festival is sure to satisfy your love of all things Dahl.
CategoriesTo enter a short performance in the festival check out the following categories to see where your performance will best ffiit, or for inspiration to create a performance that you can submit in one of the following categories. Participants can enter in more than one category.
SLIMY SOLOSCreate a 5 – 8 minute monologue (that means a performance on your own) based on your favourite Roald Dahl story, poem or character. You don’t have to tell the entire story; you may wish to select your favourite chapter or moment in a story. Or you may want to use your own imagination and create a whole new piece inspired by your favourite Roald Dahl book. Costumes and props are encouraged as long as they don’t detract from your fabulous performance.
Primary Age Solos Monday 21st September 10am – 1pm
Secondary Age Solos Tuesday 22nd September 10am – 1pm
DISGUSTING DUOSPick you most disgusting best friend (or best actor buddy) to create a 5 – 10 minute performance based on or inspired by your favourite Roald Dahl story or characters. Don’t be afraid to think outside the square and show us your unique take. You can play as many characters as you like as long as there are only two people in your short performance. Costumes and props are encouraged as long as they don’t detract from your fabulous performance.
Primary Age Duos Monday 21st September 2pm – 5pm
Secondary Age Duos Tuesday 22nd September 2pm – 5pm
GROTESQUE GROUP PERFORMANCES You need to have a group of 3 or more humans to enter the grotesque group category. This performance should go for no more than 15 minutes. Cos-tumes and props are encouraged as long as they don’t detract from your fabulous performance
Primary Age Group Performances Wednesday 23rd September 10am – 12pm
Secondary Age Group Performances Wednesday 23rd September 12pm - 2pm
REVOLTING READERS This is your chance to read out your favourite passage from any Roald Dahl book, poem or short story. Your selected chunk of revolting text should be between 3 -5 minutes. Show us your best expressive story telling skills using your face and voice to engage your ugly audience members. Costumes and props are not neces-sary.

AWFUL ADULTS If you’re a kid at heart, brave enough and think you can do better than those chubby children this is your shot! Solos, duos and group pieces are all mushed into this single cate-gory. Your awful piece can go up to 10 minutes. Losers in this category will spend a week in the chokey and winners will get a golden ticket, so make sure your performance is up to scratch, you filthy maggots!

The Romantic life of Mr and Mrs Twit Starring Drew Holmes & Shane Bransdon
Thursday 24th September 7pm Appropriate for Little kids and big kids
A tale, presented as several short scenes, captures the loving, caring relationship between Mr & Mrs. Twit. The text from Roald Dahl’s ‘The Twits’ has been adapted and developed into a focused performance based on the fun and games that are played between two villains. Be sure to not miss this incredibly funny and heart warming perfor-mance by two of Newcastle’s finest actors.

Big and Friendly Tales –Friday 25th September 2pm Appropriate for Little kids & big kids
Regional Institute of Performing Arts 3rd year students bring something really special to the playhouse stage. A variety of Roald Dahl classics told in short story form. Get ready to feast your eyes on something magical and hear a few of your favourite tales.

Someone Like You – Presented by Stooged Theatre
Friday 25th September 8pm Appropriate for 16 years +
Newcastle’s award winning contemporary theatre company Stooged The-atre asks you to leave the children at home and experience the best of Roald Dahl’s acclaimed adult short stories live on stage. Someone Like You prom-ises to be a riveting night filled with tales of love, hate, death, sex, murder, friendship, violence, romance, betrayal and family - all with a trademark Dahl twist.

MATILDA AT NEWCASTLE TOWER CINEMAS Tuesday 22nd September 7pm
Join us for the well loved 1996 film adaptation of Dahl’s famous story of Matilda Wormwood, a gifted girl forced to put up with a crude and nasty father and mother. When Matilda learns she has special powers she uses them to teach the terrifyingly strict and evil principal, Agatha Trunchbull, a lesson. Starring Mara Wilson, Danny DeVito and Pam Ferris.

STORY TIME WITH ANGIEQ Thursday 24th September 10am Come and join us for Story time with AngieQ at the Newcastle Museum. Grab a comfy beanbag, close your eyes and imagine you are sitting in Miss Honey’s classroom on a sunny morning. Enjoy
listening to one of the many fabulous Roald Dahl stories read by the very funny and pretty AngieQ.

DRAMA WORKSHOP/SCharacter Building and improvisation Workshop with Drew HolmesThursday 24th September
Children will get the opportunity to let their colourful and crazy imaginations go wild. Each student will learn the skills to create a character, play with costumes and props and improvise small Dahl inspired scenes with each other.

Roald Dahl’s unique Actors Masterclass with Daniel StoddartFriday 25th SeptemberThis one-off masterclass is for anyone of those fabulous children who buried themselves in Roald Dahl’s fabulous stories and movies when they were younger (or still do). Get the chance to learn new acting skills to imagine, create and deliver a fabulous new character, story or short play.

FESTIVAL PARTY Saturday 26th October 5pm Meet up with all of your new festival friends at the official Roald Dahl festival party! Come dressed as your favourite character and groove the night away. Chit chats, giggles, boogie and have a sweet soft drink with you new festival friends. Why not hang around for the Gala Final afterwards

GALA FINAL Saturday 26th September 7pm
Come together to see the week’s best and funniest pieces of Roald Dahl goodness. There will be plenty of goodies and prizes to be taken home. The Gala Final program will be made up of a selection of the best performances form the categories performed earlier in the week.
