21ST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME AUGUST 24, 2014

Dear Parishioners, It’s nearing that time of the year again when we begin the process of Inquiry for those among us who may have an interest in becoming Catholic or an interest in completing sacramental initiation that began with Baptism as a child but may have never been completed through Confirmation and Eucharist. The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (R.C.I.A.) will host its Period of Inquiry on Wednesday evenings this fall in Rosario Hall. If you, your spouse, or another family member who is not Catholic and is interested in inquiring about the Catholic faith or if you have a friend or neighbor with such an interest or if you or someone you know have a desire to continue your Christian initiation begun in Baptism, please call Deacon Ken Clemens at (636) 394-9048 or you may contact us at the rectory. We are looking forward to another rich and grace-filled opportunity to share our faith with those who are inquiring and to welcome new members into our Communion of Faith next Easter! On another note, our Holy Infant Fall Festival is fast approaching. The Fall Festival will take place on Friday, September 12th, 6:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. and Saturday, September 13th from 12:00 noon – 10:00 p.m. We are in need of about 150 volunteers of all ages to make this all-parish event successful. An event of this magnitude takes a lot of dedicated volunteers. The Fall Festival Committee has made it easy to volunteer this year by having tables in the lobby of church after all of our Masses this weekend as well as an opportunity to sign up online. Please visit the following link:

http://holyinfant.ivolunteer.com/fallfestival2014 You may also click on the festival picture on the home page of our Holy Infant parish website. Thanks, in advance, for all who help to make this annual Fall Festival such an enjoyable experience for our parish community. In closing, we have all been painfully aware of the turmoil and tragedy in Ferguson, Missouri. As a parish, we have been including in our intercessions at daily Mass a prayer for those struggling to find peace in the midst of chaos. Together we continue to pray for deeper peace and justice in our community and in our world. God’s blessings to you and your families,

At the 4:00 p.m. Mass on Saturday, our Stephen Ministers were re-commissioned and the retiring Stephen Ministers were thanked for their dedicated service. Some had been Stephen Ministers for eight years. That is dedication! This weekend information was available after all Masses about a new training class beginning in October. Stephen Ministry makes a difference in the lives of hurting individuals and in the entire parish. You are invited to an Information Meeting on Thursday, September 11th at 7:00 p.m. in the upper cafeteria to learn more about Stephen Ministry. All your questions will be answered. For more information, call Patricia at (636) 227-0802, option 3.

The Deacon’s Corner A few parishioners have inquired regarding some of the “secret” prayers said during Mass. Well, there are no “secret” prayers, but there are prayers that are said silently - or just softly enough - that people sometimes hear them if the microphone is sensitive enough. These prayers are really quite beautiful and have a rich history. With that in mind, I thought that I would let you in on a few over the next few weeks.

One of the prayers is said at the altar when the water is poured into the wine during the preparation of the gifts (Mingling Rite). This rite of pouring water into the wine used for consecration is very ancient. In fact, it is believed that Jesus himself used wine tempered with water at the Last Supper, as this was the common practice among the Jews and in Mediterranean culture at that time when wine was thicker in consistency and required thinning to be palatable. The prayer that is said by the priest or deacon during the mingling of the water and wine is as follows:

By the mystery of this water and wine, may we come to share in the divinity of Christ, who humbled himself to share in our humanity. The mingling of water and wine is symbolic in a couple of ways. It is representative of the blood (wine) and water that flowed together from the side of Jesus during the Crucifixion. The mingling of water and wine also represents Christ’s divinity and humanity. The wine indicates His divinity and the water His humanity. Once the water and wine mingle, they cannot be separated. This is also true of Christ’s divinity and humanity, although distinct, are forever joined in the Incarnation – when Christ humbled himself to share in our humanity. That’s our faith – rich in tradition – based in Scripture. See you next time! God Bless,

Deacon Dan Raidt

We invite you to come and ask all those questions you have about Catholicism and the Church in general in a “no pressure” setting. RCIA is a dynamic faith-building process designed to help you learn more about yourself, our God, and the Catholic faith community.

The RCIA is for those who are:

• Unbaptized – These people follow a process that helps them both grow in their awareness of God's call and find ways to respond to that call. They are referred to as Catechumens.

• Baptized in another Christian Church – These are people from a Christian faith tradition who are seeking full communion with the Roman Catholic Church through Eucharist and Confirmation. They are referred to as Candidates.

• Baptized but “Uncatechized” Catholics – These are adults who were baptized in the Catholic Church but not brought up or educated in the Catholic tradition. Also referred to as Candidates, they prepare to celebrate the sacraments of Reconciliation, Confirmation, and Eucharist.

Check the St. Louis Archdiocese website on RCIA at http://archstl.org/becomingcatholic for more information.

Sessions start on Wednesday September 3, so now is the time to register! Call Ken Clemens at (636)394-9048. If you’d like to have a closer look in advance, there’s also an informational Open House scheduled for Wednesday, August 27 in the Upper Cafeteria.

We will be assembling a mailing of the Holy Infant Newsletter on Wednesday, August 27 after the 8:00 a.m. Mass in the lower cafeteria. Please come help us tab and label this mailing, and enjoy coffee, donuts and camaraderie. For more information call Kathie or Gene at(314) 913-4230.

Mr. Joe Bozzi, our band director, is looking forward to another great year for our school band. Recently, educational research has shown evidence that students who participate in a band program show improved scores in tests such as SAT and in many areas such as math and reading skills. Mr. Bozzi will be meeting with parents who would like to enroll their child in beginning band (4th through 8th grades) on Wednesday, August 27, at 7 p.m. in the School Band Room. No experience is necessary. Several instruments are school-owned and are available to be used by band members. These include: trombone, baritone horn, bells, keyboard, trumpet, bass clarinet, drums, tuba and marimba.

The parish community can use your help! This year we are having online sign-ups only. There are many opportunities in games, food, set up, clean up and ticket/wrist band sales. You can volunteer individually or as a family. This is a great way for teens to get service hours.

We need your help to make this event a success! Go to the parish website to sign up. Online volunteering makes it easy to sign up for the job and shift you want. For questions email Laura at [email protected]. Thank you for your willingness to help with the festival.
