The reason for using algebraic polynomials to approximate anarbitrary set of data is that, given any continuous functiondefined on a closed interval, there exists a polynomial that isarbitrarily close to the function at every point in the interval.
Also the derivatives and integrals of polynomials are easilyobtained and evaluated.
Most of the procedures for approximating integrals andderivatives use the polynomials that approximate the function.
