Large market gardens were also planted in Appleby and evidence of kumara pits can still be seen in the area. “Kapa haka is an excellent opportunity for the Ap-pleby Schoool children and their whanau to ac-knowledge and celebrate our cultural history and diversity,” Graham says.

Kids back home after accidentTwo Tapawera children who were seriously injured during a farm related accident are safely home after they were discharged from hospital this week. The accident occurred on Thurs-day evening when the father of the two children’s ute rolled with

the children still inside. It is be-lieved the father brought the two children out to feed hay when the accident occurred. The boy is age three years old and the girl four. The children were airlifted to Nelson Hospital with their father by the Nelson Marl-

borough Rescue Helicopter fol-lowing the accident.Police spokesperson Barbara Dunn says police completed an investigation last week before handing the case over to the Business, Innovation and Em-ployment Ministry to investigate.

“If someone goes on Facebook and attacks an-other child socially, we demonise them. Now when adults do it, it’s acceptable. The person who was found out to be a cheat, look at kind of things that are being said about her by adults. It is vile and it is disgusting yet they are justified in their own minds to do that. What is the differ-ence between that and what children do?“I think everyone has the right to speak but if we really want to make change, it

isn’t about the technology; it is about how we are treating each other.”Families can be traumatised by cyber bullying

and John says parents should embrace their children using social networking sites and “lead the way”, making their own page, becoming ‘friends’ with them so they can keep an eye on what is being said. “If we have values based education that looks at positive behaviour and positive conduct then a lot of these problems will go away.”

Whitebait could be hard to come by this season with numbers at a 30 year low, says Simon Bailey of the Department of Conservation. The season officially opened on August 15, how-ever, Simon expects the banks of the local river-beds to remain empty for the coming weeks as poor whether and declining whitebait numbers delay what would usually be peak times.“I’ve been doing patrols for seven years and speaking to whitebaiters who have been there for 30 years they say there has been an overall de-cline,” Simon says. “There are not many people around at the mo-ment because things haven’t kicked off that quickly. That is understandable if you get a wet end to winter. People would’ve gone out, checked the conditions and decided to wait awhile.”Richmond’s Larry Sutherland, who has been whitebaiting in the Waimea River for 50 years, says he will wait another few weeks before he starts fishing so was unsure how many fish would be in the river.

He confirmed that whitebait had been in de-cline for a number of years, however in 2010, the Waimea River had its best run in 30 years. The low numbers of whitebait in the Nelson-Tasman rivers are because of changing habitat caused by land development, says Simon. There are fewer wetlands than in previous years and more stock are situated near creeks. White-bait breed in the mouths of rivers and if stock are allowed to graze to the river’s edge, then the whitebait eggs are left vulnerable. DOC has been looking into how the rivers can be better managed, although those discussions are still ongoing with Tasman District Council.Despite low numbers of whitebait, the number of people fishing for them has remained at a con-stant figure throughout the past decade. The Motueka River has been the most popular spot in the Tasman region while the Waimea River and the Wakapuaka River are known to have had good runs in the past. The whitebait season closes again on November 30. For full details and rules around whitebaiting visit www.doc.govt.nz.

Two motorbikes were pulled off the road over the weekend during a police sting which stopped more than 100 motor-cyclists.The traffic safety campaign targeted motorcyclists to make sure their bikes and licences were up to scratch. Rolling checkpoints around Nelson and Tasman ticketed 40 people for a range of offences from not hav-ing a legal helmet to not meeting noise regulations. Two motorcycles were put off the road, or “green stickered” for excess noise.Four motorcyclists were also given roadside suspensions for breaching the conditions of their licence by riding bikes over 250cc. One motorcyclist also had to phone home for a regula-tion helmet before being able to ride on.Police caught a disqualified driver and issued numerous tick-ets for warrant of fitness and registration breaches.

Some motorists were also issued compliance notices, giving them a period in which to get their vehicle licensed.Senior sergeant Grant Andrews says while it was disappoint-ing that so many people had been ticketed, the operation was

extremely successful.“We want people to realise that road checkpoints are not just about checking for alcohol. Operating a roadworthy vehi-cle and keeping to the condi-tions of your licence are both safety issues. People need to ensure they are operating le-gally as our tolerance for repeat offending in these instances is very low.”Grant says police will continue to run similar campaigns on a regular basis.“We’re tasked with keeping the

roads safe and knowing that road users are operating safe ve-hicles and have the correct licence is an important factor in that,” he says.

Forget everything you think you know about projectors. The latest projectors are outstand-ing viewing, have outstanding sound and thanks to Begg’s Musicworks are now incred-ibly affordable. If you are a sports fan, movie fan, gamer or music fan you should visit Tim and his team at Begg’s to see why they are so excited about the latest projectors they now have in store. In fact Tim is so keen to see Nelsonians give them a go he has put together projector packages starting from just $3000.“People’s perception of what projectors look like and what they are now is very different, the tech-nology has improved out of sight. Five years ago they were good but you had to pay a lot of money, five years ago good was $15,000 now good is $3000,” says Tim.Many households use a normal television for watching the news and other programmes but pull down the projector screen for serious viewing, including sports, movies, gaming and watching music DVDs. “If you want to sit down and actually watch something, this is perfect. The picture quality

is very, very good and the movie experience is so much better than watching it on a big screen TV, and the cost now is not horrible. In fact, it’s quite affordable,” says Tim.

Tim says he doesn’t see what all the fuss is about with 3D on tel-evisions but on a projector it is “outstanding.” Screen size can be literally anything right up to an incredible 300 inches but most people are going for be-tween 80 and 120 inch screens. Begg’s has packages starting at $3000 for a projector; $5000 for projector, amp and sound sys-tem and up to $10,000 for the full setup. All these systems offer serious theatre perfor-mance, with serious savings. The team at Begg’s can also

customize a system to suit your needs and install your projector. “I encourage people to come in sit down and have a look at how good it really is. We have the room set up and they can come in and see that I’m not talking these up for no reason.”Call in and see the team and sample what a true home theatre looks and sounds like, 264-268 Hardy St, Nelson or call 548 8699.

While backing out of a disability park-ing at the Richmond Medical Centre on August 7 at about 9:30am I was nearly side swiped by someone who said “I’m in a hurry”. I was in shock and got out of my car only to get inconsiderate abuse from the driver. Those of us that are not so fortunate with our mobility deserve some consid-eration. If only that driver had to endure my

pain and disability he might be a lot more understanding of the life disabled folk live, rather than tell me I’m a waste of space.Anne Senior, Richmond.

Lets get real about the much maligned bridge over the Wairoa river. We’re lucky to have the bridge – which after all was built on a very tight budget. Okay, so the approaches are steep but it’s obvious to anyone that bikes should be wheeled up and down the steep stuff. All serious bikers look forward to the next bridge over the Waimea so that we can all enjoy the ups and downs of our amazing cycleways around the district.Fred McKee, Richmond.

Really, how cool is it that we have this cycle bridge at our fingertips?Walk your darn bikes up and down the bridge. My four year old son does it. How hard is it? You get off and walk. I’m hopeless on my bike, but I’ve done itI really think it’s about time people started taking a bit of responsibility for their own safety. If you fell off going over an exposed tree root, who’d you blame? I’m worried that if people can’t take care of themselves, then we’d have no ‘adven-ture’ in our lives and what a sorry place we’d be in then.Karen, Via www.waimeaweekly.co.nz.

Work to bring ultra fast broadband to homes, schools and businesses in Tasman was officially launched last week.Last Thursday Chorus, along with the gov-ernment, announced its roll out of ultra-fast broadband to the region. A network of fibre cable is already available for busi-nesses in the Richmond CBD but the lat-est announcement will see it go into new schools, businesses and homes around the region.Tasman District mayor Richard Kempthorne was at the launch and says the announcement is exciting for the region.“This is an exciting occasion for us to cel-

ebrate. I’m quite passionate about how we get this technology con-nected to rural users because I think it will really benefit our hor-ticulture, fishing and tourism in-dustries.” The rollout is part of the govern-ment’s $1.35 billion investment in high-speed broadband nationwide.

The new speed will allow speeds of 100 mega-bytes per second, from around the standard three mega-bytes per second currently.C o m m u n i c a -tions and infor-mation technol-ogy minister Amy Adams was

on hand to announce the rollout and says that by July next year around 6000 busi-

nesses, medical premises and households in the Nelson-Tasman region will be cov-ered by the network, as well as four schools. “High-speed broadband will mean more students at Nelson and Richmond schools will be able to share resources like physics and IT teachers. Students will be able to take part in virtual classrooms and courses that might not be available at their own schools. They could even learn French from a teacher in Paris.”Local firms Transfield Services and Ad-cock and Donaldson are working on in-stalling the new fibre cables around Nelson and Tasman.

A Richmond boy that had his bike stolen from the school bike stands has had it replaced by the town’s newest cycle store.Avanti Plus Richmond opened its doors last week and one of its first tasks was finding a replace-ment bike for Waimea Intermediate Student Jared Cummings. As reported in the Waimea Weekly two months ago, Jared’s BMX bike was stolen when the alleged thief came onto school grounds to take his bike.Jared did not have his bike locked up at the bike stands, which is more than 100m down the school’s main driveway and only accessible to students, staff and school visitors.Jared’s mother Sandra Cummings says the offer was “very generous”. “I thought ‘wow, there are obviously people left in this world that are hu-man’. I couldn’t believe it.”Jared had been walking to school since his bike was stolen and was equally happy. “I was so ex-cited,” says Jared, who rode his new bike home from Avanti Plus.Store owners Mike and Jo Anderson also do-nated a free bike lock to Jared to make sure his new bike could not be stolen. The idea of giv-ing him a bike came about when they read his story in the Waimea Weekly. “You feel sorry for kids that that sort of thing happens to, especially when his mum says that was his pride and joy,” says Jo. “We’re obviously locals and Avanti were happy to help out as well. It was so satisfying giv-ing them the phone call because they were abso-lutely stoked.”

Mini speeds to world recordA Nelson Mini has clocked an average speed of 235.9 kilometers per hour to etch its name into the world record books for a new land speed record in its class.Dubbed Project ‘64, the 1964 Mini Cooper S driven by Nelson Hartley, the brother of former Red Bull Formula 1 prodigy Brendon Hartley, reached a top speed of 151.087mph through a three mile short course on the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah last week.It beats the previous record of 210kmh held by the Hudson Boys.

To break the record, the 1964 Mini had to beat the previous time through the second and third mile of a three mile course. It then went into “impound” for four hours, giving the crew enough time to correct any faults before taking to the salt flats for a second time. The Mini had to beat its previous speed in the second attempt and both speeds were then accumulated and calculated into an average over the mile. The Mini was competing in the I/BGCC class, which is determined by engine size, in this case up to 1000cc, supercharged and competition coupe.

The entire crew included driver Nelson, who helped build the engine with his fa-ther Bryan, Nelson based race car and clas-sic restorers Guy Griffith and Garry Orton, who work out of Victory R at the World of Wearable Arts and Classic Cars Museum, Alltrax NZ’s Garry Grant and Christch-urch based Mini guru Larry Mullholland of Swift Automotive. In addition to the team, 25 supporters were in Bonneville for the record attempt. Most of those supporters came from Nel-son but there were a handful from Canada and other parts of New Zealand.Project spokesperson Mike Wilson says

the group was “very happy” to have broken the land speed record, despite acknowledging that the Mini had poten-tial to go faster. The crew celebrated with cheers, hugs, a nice dinner and champagne all round,

the latter two courtesy of sponsor Peter Talley. “It feels very special, especially since we achieved it with a car that really shouldn’t have been able to do it. Minis have always been known for their corner-ing ability but never for their straight line speed,” says Mike, speaking from Utah. “On the morning of our first qualifying run the Bonneville Speedway radio station was playing some archive tapes of Burt Munro speaking and he was talking of the fact the anyone could buy a new bike and go fast, but to break records with an old bike was a much more interesting challenge.”Burt’s grandson Rob Henderson and his wife Tracy are two of the project’s staunch-est supporters and sent a message saying “Burt would have been proud of you all.”Next on the agenda will be plenty of sleep and spending time with their families, says Mike. There has been talk of other events such as Pikes Peak, but there could also been another return to Bonneville next year.

Father’s Day is just around the corner on 2 September and Fashion Island would like to help spoil your dad. So with this in mind, I am up for a browse to find some great ideas and gifts. On Hardy St I stroll first into Rodd and Gunn. The new range of polo shirts is a great idea and the leather accessories are made in NZ. The luggage is exquisite. Even for the fisherman in the family there is a leather/ sheepskin fly wallet. Just along the road is Barkers. Adoring the new shirts that have just been unpacked, and also their selection of canvas bags. Heading back around to The Rock Box, and not focusing on what I could buy - but the guys have great choice in jeans, shirts and jackets in awesome brands. With George Clooney peering at me from the windows of Sunglass Style, the range of driving, sport and casual sunglasses is another option. The range of men’s soaps moisturisers and gift packs from The Body Shop and Lush also make an easy choice for dad’s gifts. Next stop Living and Giving, and if your dad is a genius in the kitchen, or on the BBQ, there is plenty to choose from. Just Jeans have a fantastic range of jeans like Levi, Calvin Klein, check out Jay Jays for tees, and for dad’s desk at the office-contemporary pens and pads can be found at Smiggles. Bring the family in for a brunch or lunch at Morrison Street Café or Columbus Coffee for a catch up, and make your dad, husband, or partner feel extra special.

It may not be an advisable way to get your Marmite fix, but waking up in Nelson Hospi-tal is one way to get your hands on the scarce spread.Patients at the hospital are still being offered Marmite for their breakfast despite the spread not be produced for the past five months as its manufacturer, Sanitarium, repairs its earth-quake damaged plant. Production is expected to resume in October but jars of Marmite have been selling for hun-dreds of dollars on Trade Me as desperate food-ies seek out the few remaining jars in the coun-try.For Nelson woman Solveig Sheed all she had to do to get her hands on it was tick the right box at Nelson Hospital when ordering her breakfast. Maria Chhina, food manager for Compass Group which supplies the food to Nelson Hos-pital, says the region got lucky with its supplier Bidvest having a higher than usual stock of the small Marmite portions when the plant closed down. She says some patients have been very appre-ciative and that the hospital will have enough stock to last until production starts again in two months.

Band drums up supportA local high school band is in the running to open at the national Smokefreerock-quest final, but it needs the public’s sup-port to get them there.Fire Without Permit, consisting of twins Rigel and Bowyne Blanchet from Nelson College as well as Hana Tava, Jordan Har-vey and Jacob King of Waimea College, was chosen as the Skinny People’s Choice band when the Nelson final was held at the Theatre Royal in May. All of the regional winners in this cat-egory, who have not reached the final, are now be eligible to open for the eight final-ists at the national final in Hamilton on

September 22. The winning band will also get its flights and accommodation paid for.The voting process will remain the same for the nation-wide competition with members of the public able to text the name of the band they would like to see reach the final. You can vote for each act by sending the band name with no spaces to 5678. Texts cost 20 cents. Voting closes on September 14 at 2pm.Meanwhile, Nelson winner New Vinyl will hear tonight whether it has made the top eight for the national final, which was won by the Peasants in 2011.

Lifeguard named NZ’s bestJust a thoughtIt can be really frustrating being sick can’t it? Especially if you are one of those disgustingly healthy people who don’t even get a cold.Recently I called on our emergency health team. They did a fantastic job. Without exception, all the staff were kindly and very proficient in their work. Since then I’ve become part of the medical sys-tem. I’m not very patient waiting my turn in the medical procedure line. I find myself grumbling about the slow progress. I should be thanking God that I live in a country where emergency medi-cal services are provided free of charge. At least here the neces-sary follow-up does happen. It takes time but it does happen. Across the world, people die be-cause they can’t receive the right treatment. Why doesn’t God pre-vent their deaths? I wish I could answer that. All I know is that we humans could do a lot more to prevent death than we do. Recently I sat with a relative across the other side of the world. He was dying. God was with him, as he was with me – the peace was tangible. Is God with all who are dying? I believe so – but that doesn’t take away our obligation to prevent unnecessary deaths. Many die when they could be well and healthy with the right treatment. We are responsible for our neighbour – wherever they live.

Richmond’s Rachel Pike has been named lifeguard of the year at a na-tional aquatics conference last week. She says the award is great payback for the effort she has put into the industry over the years. “A lot of people put in extra effort and it’s not always recognised. Everyone does their day job but sometimes it’s those extra things and I think this is probably an acknowledgement of that,” says Rachel. Each lifeguard is nominated be-fore being interviewed and judged. Rachel reached the top seven two years ago, the first time she was nominated.Rachel grew up in the Nelson re-gion, before going onto study in Dunedin. She then travelled over-seas before returning home. “I

went to Waimea College, so I’m a true Nelson girl. I grew up here so I thought it’d be a great place for my children to grow up too.”Having trained to be a teacher, Ra-chel first took the job at the ASB Aquatic Centre thinking it would “look good” on her CV when she applied for teaching jobs. Five and a half years later and only one in pool rescue and she has not looked back. Rachel started off as the swimming school instructor before training as a lifeguard and picking up further roles at the complex. She is now the aquatics coordinator. “I enjoy it here. There are challenges day to day. Out on pool deck there are long hours standing around but it’s what you make of it. There are customers there to talk to all day.”

Seven years ago the Nelson Wom-en’s Centre threw out its remain-ing sewing machines after they kept breaking down, but last week it hosted its first sewing workshop since then, thanks to a local group.Patches of Tasman held a success-ful patchwork and quilting sympo-sium in April and used the funds it raised to donate sewing machines to Nelson Women’s Centre and the Victory Community Centre.Carrie Mozena, of the women’s centre, says the machines mean the centre can host sewing classes giving local women practical skills. The class, called ‘from op shop to

top shop’ began last Tuesday and will see eight women take part.Sponsorship from local and nation-al businesses and organisations, donations of locally made goods and complementary exhibitions at local galleries all contributed to the success of the symposium. That led the Patches of Tasman organising committee, with the on-going sup-port from Bernina NZ, to acknowl-edge their appreciation by donating new sewing machines and notions to the Nelson Women’s Centre and to the Victory Community Centre to assist these groups to learn and develop sewing and creative skills.

Q: I have got behind in my power bill, and now owe a lot of money. The power company is going to disconnect my power if I don’t pay all the arrears. They won’t let me pay the debt off weekly. What shall I do? Shall I change to another power company?

A: You will have to pay your power arrearsto keep your power connected. If you try to change to another power company they will check your credit history and probably refuse you. This means you may have to get your power on in a family member’s or friend’s name.

The Grape Escape Complex on the cor-ner of McShane Rd and the State Highway in Appleby has become a popular meet-ing place for meals, art works and knick knacks.Recently we saw the demolition of the dwelling on the highway corner that ini-tially had been built for the cheese maker of the factory alongside. The dwelling would have been built in about 1930 either for the owner of the cheese factory, who may have been Barney McKendry, or Waimea Dairy Company who subsequently bought from the for-mer. Bill and Edna Cross bought the whole complex including seven acres of land in about 1935/36 when the Dairy Company moved the cheese side of its operation to Brightwa-ter. During their ownership, the Cross family of seven, including five boys, lived with some con-straints in that the toilet, wash-ing facilities (both clothing and personal) were contained over in the cheese factory building. This would have incurred some cold walks on typical winter days that Richmond can throw up.The cheese factory remains pretty well in-tact from its earlier days with much of the same layout still discernable today among the various divisions within now housing

boutique areas of different art and craft products. The Cross family operated the property for farming, running of stock and growing

seedling stock such as tomatoes and general market gardening. Bill Cross as well had land on Riv-er Rd in Appleby where he grew a good crop of potatoes. One family member, Dave, now living in Granity on the West Coast recalls an incident that oc-curred often, it involved him and his elder brother Barry. During a typical day of work for their mum and dad whilst packing and grad-

ing produce they as young boys would be attached to a long line sufficiently apart in order that they could not get at each other and fight. This was more necessitated as the property was not adequately fenced

from the busy highway, thus preventing ever active young boys from unwittingly being vulnerable to the traffic. In about 1944 and 1948 two changes were made to the house when a new fire place and bay window were added and the old wash house and bucket toilet were demol-ished and upgraded facilities were built. The toilet area initially posed some prob-lems once complete, as the pub-lic frequently were found to be using them. Other changes that occurred about this time too. The kitchen was relocated from the front to the back of the house and a new bathroom was added where the original kitchen had been.Numerous accidents were occur-ring during the Cross ownership on the main highway intersection so the council removed the mac-

rocarpa hedge that ran alongside the house and replaced it with a low concrete fence. Some accidents were quite horrendous but luckily no deaths were ever recorded. With Bill pre deceasing Edna, she carried on the business on a more limited scale and then with her death in 1997 the prop-erty was sold and purchased by David and Heather Holmes along with Jon and Cher-yl Harrey who developed the concept the Grape Escape as we see it today. It was these folk who had the cottage shift-ed along McShane Rd where it is now oc-cupied as the restaurant. Several years later the Holmes/Harrey partnership sold the complex to Bob Haswell who retains own-ership of the property at present. As has been reported earlier in Waimea Weekly the house’s demolition is an attempt to im-prove visibility at the corner and develop-ment a lavender garden for the complex.

A Wakefield couple’s honey business is on a golden run, collecting its third first plac-ing in as many years at an awards section of the National Beekeeper’s Association conference.Mountain Valley Honey owners Murray and Nicky Elwood claimed a first placing

for their manuka honey in 2010, their bee pollen in 2011 and their autumn gold re-cently won first place in the liquid honey dark section. The Elwoods decided to enter their honey two years after taking over the business, which its previous owners had ran for 15 years. “We’re making this honey, it’s nice, we’re selling it, so we wanted to see how it

would go against everyone else,” says Mur-ray. “When you get the odd placing you know you must be doing alright. It shows that it’s world class honey.”The secret to supplying great tasting honey is doing “as little as possible”, he says. “It’s as natural as can be. A lot of big companies micro-filter it and they heat it up.”

The majority of Mountain Valley’s 1200 bee hives are situated in the Marlbor-ough Sounds with some at the base of the Whangamoa. “You work out what sort of crop you want to get. Predominantly in the Sounds it’s just manuka whereas in the Whangamoa if we put them in early it’ll be kamahi and then a bit of manuka and the native plants coming on.”

Nicky says her pas-sion behind making honey is the variety and the challenges that each year offers. “There’s always that anticipation of what flavours are going to be there,” she says. “At the beginning of the season just tast-ing it and wondering what the mix is. It’s an exciting industry to be in.”Murray starts each morning with two slices of toast covered in manuka honey, which has always been his favourite. Mountain Val-ley honey is sold throughout the coun-try at whole food stores as well as at the Saturday Market.

When it comes to lo-cally owned and operated family businesses, there aren’t many more local to the Brightwater area than the Palmers. Given the payout predic-tions and advance payout rates of calves, there is some much needed positivity in the industry, re-sulting in demand for dairy stock of all classes. At the top of the list is quality replacement stock, well recorded and well grown. Of concern is the short-age in supply of these types of animals. It’s also time to think about bull fattening, an important part of our industry. Stock numbers need to be rebuilt as the quantity and quality of bulls reared each year are declining. Smaller kiwi cross and straight Jer-sey cows have become more popular among dairy farmers and we need to ensure quality animals are being reared. Waimea College bowl over Shirley for title

Waimea College first XI centre Sean Clementson dives over the try line during Saturday’s Press Cup vic-tory over Shirley Boys’ High School. Photo: Blair Hall/www.photoaction.co.nz.

KartSport Nelson drivers Brendon Gridley, Kevin Barker and David Hope were in the Richmond Mall on Saturday promoting this weekend’s Ideal Electrical Enduro. The one hour long race will be held at the Classic Hits Kart Raceway this on Sunday with two five minute heats to determine the starting grid. Last year’s senior winner Daniel Bray clocked up 111 laps in 59 minutes. All race events are open to the public and spectator entry is free. Racing is still on if wet with under-cover viewing and food available from the club rooms. Qualifying starts at 12pm. For full event details visit www.kartsportnelson.co.nz. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

The Waimea College first XV finished the season off in style to claim the Press Cup Bowl as the best sec-tion two side.It seemed fitting that first five-eight Luca Roden’s monster 50 metre penalty capped off what was ar-guably the side’s strongest performance of the year, to brush off Shirley Boys’ High School 32-14 at Waimea College on Saturday.Waimea’s unbeaten run in the section two playoffs gave the side plenty of confidence heading into the fixture, showing it probably deserved to be contest-ing higher spots.Prop Hamish Le Comte got the side off to the best possible start, crashing over in the opening minutes of the match before Kurt Malietoa charged down a clearing kick to score the second try. Luca also land-ed an early penalty as Waimea College held a 17-7 lead at the break.Outstanding fullback Fletcher Matthews pushed the home side into a more commanding lead when he scored just minutes into the second spell. Sean Clementson then made it four tries when he raced down the left wing to put the match beyond doubt.

Fifteen games each in the regular season count for nothing now as the slate is wiped clean for the semi finals of the 2012 Premier Champion-ship which will be played at Saxton Stadium on Thursday.Jacks OPD and Richmond Robbie’s Bar & Bistro will meet in the 1 v 2 playoff with the winner booking it’s place in the final, the loser will play the winner of the 3 v 4 semi between Waimea College and Stoke NBS on Saturday.Jacks OPD have gone through the regular un-beaten however they did not go unscathed as Stoke NBS grabbed a hard earned bonus point (finishing within five goals) in the third round and Richmond claimed a draw last week in a preverbal nail biter.Jacks coach, Robyn Leonard admit-ted her charges have had a number of good wins with some convinc-ing score lines and have not really been under pressure until the game against Stoke. To their credit, Jacks knuckled down and “sorted it out” to take the win. The Richmond en-counter was a tight one, with Richmond hold-ing the lead until late in the third period.Jacks moved up a gear with powerful perfor-mances by mid courters Jodi Hikuroa and Moana Forbes who ensured that prolific shoot-ers Ani Waitai and Leanne Cook had an abun-dance of quality ball.Come Thursday night though, the repeat of last week’s game will have a different look about it, due to the fact that New Zealand Women’s Basketball finals are being played In Dunedin. Jacks will be without playmaker Jodi Hikuroa however Richmond will be a whole lot “worse off ” with Nicky Rampton, Kat Jones and Lisa Book on basketball duty.Jacks have a few options to replace Jodi at cen-tre – there’s Moana or Tineil Stevenson and Kirsten Powick could also pull on the C bib.Jacks treasure their record to date and do not want to crumble and fall at the final hurdle. Their aim is to take the game and the direct

route to the final but to do so will be looking at a team effort. If their full court defence fires and the shooters continue in the same vein as they have all season it is difficult to see them being beaten. For Richmond on the other hand, have more of a headache in filling the key goal attack posi-tion. Nicky Rampton is without a doubt the top goal attack in the competition and leaves big shoes to fill – both literally and figurative-ly! Nicky has been Richmond’s “go–to–girl” throughout the season, she shoulders a hefty load through court and is the predominant shooter, returning commendable statistics

week in, week out.Without the basketball trio, Rich-mond still have seven regulars on their roster, add to the mix coach Amanda Springer who adds to the defensive end and they do have players in their Grade 1 and 2 teams who have premier experience and could fit into the groove quite nicely. At the back of their minds Rich-

mond know they will have their full roster available for the final on 30 August however they have to win one more game before they can reach the final... be it against Jacks on Thursday or by facing Waimea or Stoke on Sat-urday.Waimea College and Stoke NBS have had some great battles throughout the regular season – Stoke won the first by a solitary goal, Waimea the second by three goals and claimed the third by one in the absolute final second.Waimea’s stand in coach Lynne Olsen believes it will need to be a consistent four quarters and the least amount of errors that will pave the way for the win.Waimea have an abundance of talent within their ranks with Ella Marwick and Ashley La-ing providing the experience through the mid court. Shaun Aindow has proved to be the rev-elation at goal shoot and takes everything in her stride returning good statistics while goal

attack, Kayla Cross works hard in support of Shaun. It would be reasonable to say Stoke’s season has resembled a game of snakes and ladders – some ups, some downs however they ap-pear to be improving at the right end of the season. They have versatility within their roster, however coach, Priyani De Silva-Currie has had a reasonably settled line up in the championship round and is unlikely to experiment with untested combinations.Stoke manage to create a fair amount of turnover ball however they are guilty of not always converting the hard won ball. Goal keep, Aleisha Cederman has turned in a number of tidy performances of late, while evergreen Melissa Edmonds-Whale can be relied upon to apply pressure on the circle edge.Hilary Jones is the energetic link through court while Abbie Cook gets through a power of work to deliver quality ball to her shooters, Megan Thomson and Kelsey Whiting.Waimea and Stoke have taken it to one an-other during the season and Thursday’s game is another that is more than likely to go right down to the wire.

For more fishing news check out

The fishing around Nelson has been on the slow side for a while now with snapper moving to the deeper water over winter. There is still the odd big moocher hanging around for those keen enough to put the time in and will get rewarded. Good gurnard can be found in Del-aware Bay and out wide in Tasman Bay now. Don’t forget to set your flounder net around the estuaries and inlets as good numbers are also showing up.For those with the bigger boats D’urville Island and around Stephens Pas-sage are still produc-ing good snapper and kingfish on the right day. Shimano Bottom Ships and Lucanus slow jigs have worked well lately to get some really big snapper. The kingfish are a little hit and miss at present with large numbers of boats targeting them making it hard to keep the noise down. Boats speeding around and lots of noise will make the schools breakup and move away. Avoid fish-ing in the big packs of boats, move away to quieter waters and you should get rewarded. Scallops in Okiwi are in very poor condition and a voluntary closure is in place. With the size small and the meat not in good condition we ask every year why the season opens so early.Last thing to remember is to get

your boat serviced now before the spring rush as its only eight weeks before the snapper will be back. With the cold, wet and wintry days this is the perfect time to thorough-ly inspect and carry out some main-tenance on your boat trailer. This will extend its life and help promote trouble-free boating.• Obvious items include checking tyre pressures; looking for signs of rust, wear and damage; checking and cleaning lights and reflectors regularly; and lubricating the tow

coupling, winch bushes, gears and brake mechanisms.• Salt water and salt-laden air is a trailer’s biggest enemy, and even though your trailer is galvanised, corrosion can still occur.

• Always wash your trailer after exposure to salt water and salt-

laden wind. Salt deposits will short-en the life of the zinc coating and your trailer. • Wheel bearings should be checked and regreased at least twice a year, and replaced if worn – a DIY task.Wash your trailer on a regular basis with a solution of warm water and detergent. The inside of the chassis and cross members can be cleaned out by put-ting a hose into the drain holes and flushing out. This will help ensure your trailer is set to go for the start of the season.
