New Pet Waste Station At Park EntryBY Dean Haskins, Managing Broker
NORTHWEST HOMES Team
Alabama Hill Association Page 2
Pet waste holds bacteria and parasites that survivefor months on land. Rainwater carries these pollutants
into storm drains, which lead to streams, lakes, andthe bay without treatment. The bacteria can be ahealth hazard to children playing in streams, harmwildlife, and pollute Lake Whatcom, the source of ourdrinking water.
The City provides pet waste bag stations at severalother parks and trail locations. We have about 18,500dogs in Bellingham that can produce 9,250 pounds ofwaste a day. So please, lets all do our part & pick upour dog waste in our yards and especially in publicplaces like our park trails. Please bag it and place it in
your own trash containers at home.
In the future, we will be experimenting with providinga trash container to hold the full bags, however, thecosts & maintenance will not be accomplished withCity funds or personnel.

Last Meeting held 7/20/11
Jimmy Kelsey, our Rep
I apologize for missing two recent meetings. I did verify
arrangement to have Linda Stewart from the Mayor's Officeattend our August Picnic and provide some update on Waterfront
development from City of Bellingham perspective.
Mayor Dan Pike is leading an effort to recruit mayors from cities
along rail line that may feel impacts of coal train proposal to
push for additional environmental review at State level. Seattle
and Marysville Mayors are on board as are several others. You
will be seeing more about that effort in the news.
A proposal to initiate a rental property licensing and inspection
system in Bellingham has been under consideration through City
Council, but no specific legislation has yet to be produced to bestof my knowledge.
MNAC takes August off (no meeting) but I plan to be at the
September meeting. Have not read any earth shattering news in
the minutes but if you have questions please let me know. See
you at the Picnic!
Jeckyl & Hyde Restaurant due to open in August
A new eatery is starting up at the corner of James and Kentucky, across the street from Hardware Sales. Bill-of-fare is to begourmet barbecue, but on a quick and on-the-go basis. Thesefolks are already on Orchard and many may have alreadysampled their pizza and beer menu there. There hours areplanned to be 7am 7pm every day. Look for Grand Opening.
Meridian Mess!
The WSDOT is embarking on a big project to help fix the worstintersection in Whatcom County -Telegraph and Meridian. Witha grant of $3mm allocated to work the Guide Meridian from I-5up to Horton Road they are now in the public input phase. Abunch of fixes have been ro osed from buildin barriers to
