Seeing the devastation caused by World War I, Pius established this Feast as a way to remind people that Christ is Lord of both heaven and earth. Initially this Feast was celebrated on the last Sunday in October, but when the Roman Catholic Church revised its liturgical calendar in 1969 it was moved to the last Sunday of the liturgical year. Our readings this Sunday have an apocalyptic tone. As I have said previously, apocalyptic writing is very stylized. It uses vivid imagery and dramatic language, as well as visionary and prophetic images to make its point. Apocalyptic language was used in times of trail or difficulty to assure people that despite the suffering of the present moment, God was with them and ultimately would triumph. Apocalyptic literature is not meant to be taken literally. Our Gospel this Sunday is taken from the Gospel of John. It is the scene of Jesus before Pilate. Pilate asks Jesus: “Are you the King of the Jews?” Jesus reminds Pilate and us that “My kingdom does not belong to this world.” While ostensibly Pilate is in charge of this encounter, from John’s perspective (and ours) Jesus is the one who is in control. Our first reading this Sunday is taken from the Book of the Prophet Daniel. It is part of Daniel’s vision in which he saw “one like a Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven” to be present to the “Ancient One.” We would see this language as prefiguring Christ. Our second reading this Sunday is taken from the Book of Revelation. It is a hymn of praise for Christ. “To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood, who had made us into a kingdom, priests for his God and Father, to him be glory and power forever and ever. Amen.” Win the way to WYD in Poland via Prague in July 2016 CCD supports Parish Catechists and is holding a competition for current year 9 and 10 public school students to win free place to WYD 2016.To enter, handwrite 300-500 words ( or submit artwork with reflection) about why you would like to go to WYD as a pilgrim, then have your entry endorsed by your parish priest and contact CCD Sydney on 9307 8330 asap or e-mail [email protected] for parental permission form and further information. The Feast Christ the King was established by Pope Pius XI in 1925. CHRISTMAS PIETY

STALL SALE: THIS

WEEKEND….

On Sunday November 15 this year Pope Francis honoured Lutherans the world over by visiting the Lutheran Evangelical Church of Rome and offering their community a Communion chalice as a sign of "common faith." He also told a Lutheran woman present that the question of whether or not she can receive Communion in the Catholic Church is one that she and all Lutherans can decide for themselves. "There are questions that only if one is sincere with oneself and the little theological light one has, must be responded to on one's own," the Pontiff said. "It's a problem that each must answer [for himself]." The Pope’s visit came in anticipation of 500th years anniversary of the Reformation that Rome will celebrate with Lutherans in 2017 under the title: “Lutherans-Catholics Common Celebration of the Reformation”. On December 18, 2014, Francis received a delegation of the German Evangelical Lutheran Church at the Vatican, and told them: "In 2017, Lutheran and Catholic Christians commemorate together the five hundredth anniversary of the Reformation. On this occasion, Lutherans and Catholics will, for the first time, have the opportunity to keep one and the same global ecumenical commemoration, not in the form of a triumphalist celebration, but rather to confess our common faith in the Triune God." (The Eponymous Flower, December 18, 2014).This echoes his October21, 2013 speech to the Lutheran World Federation and Lutheran-Roman Catholic Commission for Unity, in which he praised "the many advances made in relations between Lutherans and Catholics in these past decades," emphasizing how "commitment to progress in spiritual ecumenism...constitutes the soul of our journey towards full communion." (Zenit News, October 21, 2013)

Pope Francis repeated his

condemnation of Friday’s terrorist

attacks in Paris, saying on Sunday

that using God’s name to justify

violence is a “blasphemy.” “I want

to strongly reaffirm that the path of

violence and hatred doesn’t solve

the problems of humanity!” Francis

said during his prepared remarks

after the weekly Angelus prayer in

St. Peter’s Square. Then, going off-

script, he declared, “To use the

name of God to justify this path is

a blasphemy!”
