Section 1 - Policy
1.1 Purpose Salvation Army Trading Company Ltd (SATCoL) is committed to, so far as is reasonably practicable
through good practice, to managing the risks to employees from injury in the workplace through the
development of a proactive approach to the identification, management and where necessary the
provision, training and use of personal protective equipment (PPE) in the workplace locations which
we operate from.
1.2 Scope PPE is equipment that will protect the user against health and safety risks at work. It can include
items such as safety helmets, gloves, eye protection, high visibility clothing and safety footwear.
Where there are risks to health and safety that cannot be controlled in other ways, the Personal
Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992 (PPE Regulations)
This policy and procedure is designed to safeguard staff, volunteers, customers, visitors and
contractors who may work at or visit our premises and therefore applies to all SATCoL locations
including shops and head office facilities.
1.3 Requirements A risk assessment is required in each location to identify hazards and control measures. PPE should be used as a last resort. Wherever there are risks to health and safety that cannot be adequately controlled in other ways, the PPW Regulations require PPE to be supplied.
1.4 Responsibilities Everyone in the workplace has a part to play when it comes to preventing accidents.
Property Services
Are Policy and Procedure Owners
Are available to provide advice and guidance where required
Are responsible for organising relevant signage for PPE that is common to many locations.
All Line Mangers including Location Managers
Managers are responsible for ensuring that:
This policy and these procedures are implemented and made known to all staff and volunteers within their area of responsibility
They manage their teams with the objective to eliminate hazards and risks
A risk assessment for their location is carried out for specific hazards that might require PPE to be provided as a control measure
Stock handling and storage is managed to prevent items, materials or equipment becoming a hazard.
All PPE is properly assessed before use to make sure it is fit for purpose, maintained and stored properly
Staff are provided with instructions on how to use it safely and that it is used
Any PPE purchased is “CE” marked and complies with the requirements of the PPE regulations 2002

Staff
All staff have a responsibility to ensure their own safety and health and for working in a manner which is not detrimental to the safety of themselves and others. Staff, including volunteers are responsible for ensuring that:
This policy and these procedures are adhered to at all times
They keep their working environment clean and tidy and clear of obstructions
They comply with the findings of the risk assessment
They wear any PPE as directed by their manager and keep this in good condition
They follow the training they have been given
Adhere manufacturer’s instructions on use of PPE
They notify their line manager once they become aware damage to equipment
Section 2 - Procedure
The majority of accidents can be prevented through risk identification.
Only use PPE as a last resort (i.e. all other alternative measures need to be put in place
before PPE is used as a last resort)
If PPE is still needed after implementing other controls (and there will be circumstances when
it is e.g. Protective footwear in a warehouse environment).
The PPE equipment must be chosen carefully and employees trained in its proper use and
how to detect and report faults

Tips for Location Managers, staff and volunteers
Your actions could make the difference between someone getting injured or not in the area/
workplace that you have control over. Here are some tips and guidance on the types of PPE:
Eyes
o Hazards chemical, dust, vapour
o Options- Safety spectacles, goggles, visors
Head
o Hazards falling objects, risk of head bumping
o Options- safety helmets, bump caps
Ears
o Hazards noise, high level sounds, short duration
o Options- earplugs, earmuffs
Hands
o Hazards abrasion, cuts, impact, electric shock, needles
o Options- Gloves
Feet and Legs
o Hazards Falling objects, heavy loads, vehicles
o Options- Safety boots with protective toecaps and penetration resistant
Visibility
o Hazards vehicles such as fork lift, shunting
o Options- Hi Viz jackets
Tips
Put up a sign if appropriate that PPE is used when machinery is in use

Think about visitors to your workplace, what do they need to know?
Key Points to remember
Are there ways other than using PPE to adequately control the risk, e.g. by using another control? If
not check that:-
Suitable PPE is provided
It offers adequate protection for its intended use
Those using it are adequately trained in its safe use
It is properly maintained and any defects are reported
It is returned to its proper storage after use

3.3 Definitions
Staff - refers to any persons carrying out SATCoL business whether they are paid or unpaid. The
definition is extended to include volunteers, and contractors.
3.4 Other Regulations
The PPE at Work Regulations do not apply where the following five sets of regulations require the provision and use of PPE against these hazards. For example, gloves used to prevent dangerous chemicals penetrating the skin would be covered by the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (as amended). The Regulations are:
