Answer the warm up questions below:1. Why can’t a freshwater fish stay in
saltwater for a long time?2. Why can’t a land plant be watered
with salt water?3. Why can’t a saltwater fish stay in
freshwater for a long time?
No Salt Low Salt High SaltLots of bacterial growth Some bacterial growth Little bacterial growth
No Salt Low Salt High Salt
Why is Transport Important to Living Things?
Think back: We eat food. So what? How do the nutrients get from our stomach/small intestine to our cells?1. Cells must maintain a balance of water
and solute (things in the water)2. Cells must be able to get all of the
materials necessary for it to survive and function
3. Cells must be able to get rid of waste products. (many of which are toxic)
In this unit we will learn: 1. HOW water and other molecules move into
or out of a cell2. THE STRUCTURE of the cell membrane that
allows materials to pass in or out of the cell

Based on these results, which way does water move? (don’t just say “out” or “in”)
Water moved toward the side that was more concentrated (had more “stuff” in it)
In your own words:• What does concentration mean? (in
terms of solutions) • 10 ml of water compared to1 liter of
the same water – which is more concentrated?
• 10g of salt in a liter of water compared to 100g of salt in a liter if water—which is more concentrated?
