ABSTRACT:

The study is aimed to highlight the social conditions of Colonial India

in late 19thand early 20thcentury, with special refrence to gender equity.The

traditionalist as well as the modernists of the said era,though opponant to

each other but they were on the same page regarding women's rights and

their education.Even the enlightened person like Sir sayyed was strong

opponent of female 's formal education.The stage of the society was all set

for male education.

result of the modernising effects of British colonialism

and the rise of reform movements both among Hindus

and Muslims....This late begining of such a movement

and its slow progress during three first quarter of the

twentith century,was to a very great degree the result of

the presisting traditionalist attitude among the common

people as well as the elite groups as a dominant

trend,which tended to perpetuate the social constraints

from which Muslim women suffered.In other words
