Dear Reader,
Welcome to MedLife – the newly formed network for life
sciences and medical technology located in Aachen.
Created by the merger of LifeTecAachen-Jülich and the Aachen
Centre for Competence in Medical Technology (AKM) at the
beginning of 2015, MedLife is now an association with over
80 stakeholders (companies, universities, startups) in the
life sciences sector. This unique combination holds great
potential for innovation, cooperation and synergies and estab-
lishes MedLife as a key partner regionally and nationally and
internationally.
One of the main goals of MedLife is to create an effective
networking platform for companies in the life science sec-
tor as well as to accelerate technology transfer by linking
academic researchers with companies to bring innovative
products to the market.
Many of our events and services support this vital exchange
between researchers, founders, and experienced entre-
preneurs, which often leads to new projects and successful
collaborations.
In addition MedLife is in close contact with national and inter-
national life sciences associations and clusters to continually
grow and establish further contacts and activities. One exam-
ple of our constructive cooperation with key life sciences net-
works in Belgium and The Netherlands is the initiation of the
Biomedica in 2007, which today is the leading annual con-
ference for life sciences within the Euregio Meuse-Rhine.
Based upon a first strategic analysis, we at MedLife have
identified several key fields of future involvement: First and
foremost, the attraction of venture capital investments for
start-ups and SMEs in the region. Additionally, MedLife will
foster the formation of innovative startup companies through
consulting, business planning and practical support.
Furthermore MedLife wants to become a significant and
powerful life sciences cluster that is recognized on a national
and international level. Thus, the network will be extended
beyond the region and complemented by new partners and
competences.
We are convinced that MedLife will become a key source for
both current and future members which are engaged and
inspired by the innovation-rich life science sector in the Aachen
and North Rhine Westphalia region. We are very much looking
forward to your contact and hope to see you soon!
Yours faithfully,
Dr. Henning Steinhagen
Chairman, MedLife e.V.

IOvis GmbH was founded in 1997 as an agency for commu-
nication and media, including classical print and a wide
range of new media. Among other emphasis is placed on 3D
computer graphics and animations which are key elements
of more comprehensive marketing campaigns at our cus-
tomers or directly used in sales activities. Our animations
of structures and process dynamics provide more insight
into technological innovations and even reveal interactions
hidden to the eye. This is a true asset for marketing but
also for education related purposes. In the area of medical
technology our expertise spans from visualizing cell activity,
surgical operations and various instruments.

Today, many surgeons still suture or staple more than
they’d like to, as medical glues don’t live up to their require-
ments. Based in Germany and the US, Medical Adhesive
Revolution seeks to change the game, introducing a one-of-
its-kind range of polyurethane based glues. The technology
is unique, as it combines ease of use, strength, flexibility
and biodegradability. Two products are currently under de-
velopment: The first has been designed for dermal use, to
close a great variety of topical wounds faster, more accu-
rately and with fewer complications. The Second is desig-
nated for use inside the body: either as an adhesive, to seal
areas of leakage or re-attach tissue, or as a hemostat, to
stop (even arterial) bleeding. Founded in 2013, but based on
a technology which had been developed since 2007, the VC-
backed start-up expanded to the USA in 2015 and is now
in the process of preparing their product approval applica-
tions in Europe and overseas. It is the team’s vision to bring
their wound sealants into every Emergency Room, Operat-
ing Room and soldier’s medical pack, to save lives, radically
enhance surgical procedures and improve patient comfort.

chemagen was founded in 1997. The company’s scientific
foundations were laid at the Technical University of Aachen.
There, the concept of the separation of complex mixtures
with magnetic beads was developed into an applicable
product. In 2011 PerkinElmer, Inc. (PKI) acquired chemagen.
PKI chemagen’s core competence is the development,
functionalization, modification and production of polyvinyl
alcohol based magnetic polymer particles (M-PVA) and kits
for nucleic acid separation. The company’s kits and parti-
cles are used for the separation of target molecules from
complex mixtures in biochemical and medical applications.
Based on its proprietary Magnetic Bead technology plat-
form, PKI chemagen has focused on kits for nucleic acid
(NA) isolation. Realizing that Magnetic Bead based kits are
ideal for automation the company developed high perfor-
mance instruments for NA extraction in parallel.

schilgen3Ddesign develops and designs products mainly for
the medical and health segment.
We take over the developing and construction in order to
find the best solution for our customer and at the end for
the end-user.
Our designing is focused on developing a good form. It
should fulfil all ergonomic, technical, strategic and visual
requirements. To reach this aim, we sketch, design, visual-
ize, construct and create design models or prototypes. So
it is normal that we don’t stop at the design surfaces, but
complete the construction on the hidden technical inside of
a e.g. plastic housing.
Our second business operating area is producing films
mainly for technical visualizations. When our clients want
to show special processes or present a new product.
We think and work in 3D – virtual and real.

Research at DWI – Leibniz-Institut für Interaktive Materialien e.V.
(DWI – Leibniz Institute for Interactive Materials) focuses on the
development of materials with active and adaptive properties,
after being founded in 1952 with an original emphasis on keratin
research and protein chemistry. The capability for active adapta-
tion and interactivity is one of the most profound challenges of to-
day’s materials research and will ultimately lead to the evolution of
structural via functional to intelligent materials. At DWI scientists
with backgrounds in polymer sciences, biotechnology and chemical
engineering closely collaborate on mastering this challenge.
The research approach at DWI is based on integrating molec-
ular components, whose structure and dynamics are orchestrated
by complex interactions on various length scales, into macroscop-
ic materials, devices and in the end systems. For exceeding the
passive functionalities of existing materials, DWI researches on
switchable material properties, the application of memory effects,
the integration of energy conversion systems, as well as on internal
feedback mechanisms. Beyond materials aspects the DWI team
aims at an integration of active characteristics into interacting ma-
terial systems. The fields of application are diverse, dealing with
surface finishing, biomedical technology, biotechnology and sus-
tainable chemical engineering.
The Aachen University of Applied Sciences (FH Aachen)
was established in 1971 as a result of the merger of several
universities of applied sciences and vocational training
centres. Theory and practice are closely linked up during
the entire course of study. The fact that the approximately
230 professors and around 700 staff members involved in
teaching and research are directly connected with profes-
sional practice guarantees a scientifically sound education
providing the relevant professional qualifications. Its more
than 12,800 students profit from this. Close cooperation
with regional and international enterprises as well as
well-known research institutes is reflected in the quality
of the curriculum offered. The numerous collaborations
with international universities contribute to the quality of
the curriculum as well.

With about 420 employees, the Fraunhofer Institute for
Laser Technology ILT is an internationally recognized re-
search institute in the sector of laser research and applica-
tions. The activities cover a wide range of areas such as the
development of new laser beam sources and components,
laser based metrology and industrial laser processes. Fur-
thermore, process studies and the development of proto-
type tools for biomedical applications are pursued. Therein
the development of the laser-based tools for biofabrication
and biofunctionalization are main activities. Photon-based
processes like multiphoton polymerization or stereo lithog-
raphy are employed to fabricate 3D scaffolds for cell co-cul-
tures. UV-induced surface functionalization is employed to
bind biomolecules onto scaffold materials. The selection
and precise transfer of single living cells by laser beams has
been demonstrated with the LIFTSYS® prototype tool. In-
vestigations of laser surgical procedures or development of
instrumentation for laser surgery are performed in coopera-
tion with clinical partners.

We are experts in biocatalyst engineering with a focus on
directed protein evolution. We are developing novel random
mutagenesis methods (SeSaM: Sequence Saturation
Method), high throughput screening systems and compu-
tational programs to manage the complexity of protein se-
quence space.
Based on our core competencies in directed protein evo-
lution we founded a company (SeSaM-Biotech) and col-
laborate with leading companies in the field of industrial

For almost 60 years now the Welding and Joining Institute
(ISF) of the RWTH Aachen University has been doing re-
search work about modern welding and joining technolo-
gies. The work of the ISF comprises almost all industrially
relevant, non-detachable joining methods. Those methods
include the arc joining methods with their modern process
variations, the entire spectrum of the electron and laser
beam welding methods, resistance and friction welding pro-
cesses and adhesive bonding.
Besides fundamental process analyses which are carried
out within the scope of the above-mentioned fields, main
emphasis is put on the application-oriented implementa-
tion of the gained results into advancement and further
development of joining technologies for innovative mate-
rial and structural design. Within the scope of our scientif-
ic work, great importance is placed on the direct industrial
cooperation, reaching from smaller projects up to long-term
development cooperation.
