Worshiping I have been in several gated communities in Chandler and have always been impressed with the security they offer. If you don’t have a card or special device to put in your car the only way into the community is through the gate with a security guard. Depending upon which community you live in, you either have to be on the list of residents to be allowed in or you have to at the very least give the name of whom you will be visiting. The bottom line is, if you don’t have a home in the community you can’t just come in.

This month Christians around the world will be celebrating Easter. It is the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Christians believe that through faith in Him we have an eternal home in heaven and it is one exclusive neighborhood. I don’t know if St. Peter will be at the gate, but I do know that the only people living there will be perfect – no, I really mean perfect.

Stay with me on this one. Heaven is a perfect place. If it were not, why would we want to go there? If that is true, then you cannot have anything or anyone who is not perfect. Now, at first, this causes quite a problem since there are no perfect people. Oh, I have met people who thought they were God’s gift to humanity, but they didn’t even believe they were perfect. So, is heaven going to be empty?

Ah, here is where Easter comes into the picture. Christians believe that Jesus from Nazareth was the Son of God and that He was perfect, without sin. He came with one purpose, to make us imperfect people able to go to heaven. No easy task. In fact, it took His life to accomplish it. Although He was perfect He asked that the sins (imperfectness) of all mankind be put on Him. That is what happened on Good Friday when He breathed His last breath He took on our sin and the punishment for it. When He rose from the grave He showed that He was victorious over sin and death. Now to those who believe in Him, He declares them to be forgiven and thus perfect.

Each day we start fresh, perfect if you will. This means that when this life is over and we stand at the gates of heaven, they will fling open because in the eyes of God we have been made perfect.

If you haven’t been in church for a long time, or if you know someone that has not, perhaps this Easter is a time to come back. Church is not about what it wants from you, but what it wants for you. Easter is a time to celebrate what God willingly and freely gives to you so that you can spend an eternity with Him.

Jesus’ “Seven Words on the Cross”

The planning and scheming of Jesus’ death was the Sanhedrin’s call but he was destined and willing to die for the sins of us all.

When Jesus, the Lamb of God, was sentenced, scourged, mocked, slapped and in pain it was the exact hour when the Passover lambs were being slain.

So Jesus was crucified after a third trial during the night and placed between two criminals, one on the left and one on the right.

His first words were “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do”. He meant them for the Roman soldiers, but He meant them for us too.

“If thou be Christ, save thyself and us”, said one criminal that day. The second said, “this man has done nothing wrong”; our deeds we must pay.

“Lord, remember me in your kingdom”, the second was contrite and wise.

Jesus said to him: “Today, thou shalt be with me in paradise”.

Standing by the cross were three Marys consoling one another.

“Mary, Jesus said, behold thy son”, to John, behold thy mother”.

“Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani” Jesus cried very loud. They said He was calling for Elijah. His words confused the crowd.

“My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me” is what those words meant. To take the total wrath of God on Himself, is why Jesus was sent.

Jesus, needing to fulfill the scripture, “I thirst” is what He said.

They filled a sponge with vinegar and pushed it up toward His head.

When it touched His mouth, “it is finished”, said Jesus. His work was done.

The work He came to do on the cross, the victory He had won.

In the sixth hour the sun was darkened and as He prepared for death,

“Father into Thy hands I commend my spirit”, said with His last breath.

As the centurion watched; for a Roman, he said something very odd. In sincerity, he proclaimed, “surely this man was the Son of God”.

Small Group Bible Studies Adult Forum - Led by Pastor Harold Teuscher

Join us every Sunday at 8:50am in the Fellowship Hall as we continue with a series of lessons called “The Week That Changed the World.” Dr. Paul Maier reminds us that the resurrection of Jesus from the dead actually happened. It’s not just a belief of Christians; it’s borne out by history, archeology, and science. This documentary takes viewers step by step through the events of Holy Week – shedding light on the key players, unraveling the political intrigue, and answering longstanding questions about what happened and why. This series of Lenten classes will bring Holy Week alive in a whole new way.

Sunday morning adult Bible studies – Led by Barry Ritchie

As one of your New Year’s resolutions, why not deepen your understanding of Scripture and join others who are also interested in digging deeper into the Bible? Two adult Bible studies (detailed below) are meeting each Sunday morning. These classes will help you better apply the teachings of the New Testament to your life, work, and relationships. Using the Life Application Bible Study Series method, each of these 13-week classes will lead us through an important part of the New Testament. Copies of the study guide for each class will be available for purchase ($6). The study guide includes our weekly lessons, the entire text of the Bible book(s) we’ll study, as well as that book’s Life Application Bible Commentary (including illuminating notes, application hints, maps, tables, personal sketches, and more). As previous

attendees will attest, you will find these classes fascinating, enjoyable, and enriching. We’ll meet Sunday mornings in the Conference Room. If you’re interested in attending, please let Barry Ritchie know of your interest by sending an email to [email protected] or by phoning him at (480) 839-1382 (leave a message if there’s no answer). See you there!

At 8:50 AM: The Epistles of John. Written to a group of small house churches by the last living apostle, these letters from John encouraged Christians to live as Jesus had taught. These short letters provide the inspired wisdom needed to live as members of God’s family and fellowship, and also contain important warnings about how to avoid failure in our relationships with Jesus and our Christian community. This study will lead us through each of these three letters to know better what God expects of us, to deepen our faith in Christ, and to strengthen our community of faith here at Risen Savior Lutheran Church.

At 10:10 AM: The Acts of the Apostles. The Acts of the Apostles (“Acts”) provides the only detailed history found in the Bible of the early years of the church. Covering the first three decades after Jesus ascended to heaven, Acts provides an incredible panorama of life in the 1st century as Peter, Paul, and the first Christians spread the Good News about Christ throughout the Roman Empire. We will read about the events that sent this message from Jerusalem to “the ends of the earth”, compelling the first Christians to sacrifice everything for that faith. This class will lead us through the entire book of Acts to help us better understand our faith and our history, and to inspire us to greater devotion to Jesus and His church.

Sunday Volunteer Sign-up Process Our Sunday morning volunteer positions are scheduled through Planning Center. We are using a tool in Planning Center called Sign-up-Sheets. Rather than the office scheduling you, now you will be able to choose which Sundays/service you’d like to serve.

At the beginning of each month you will receive an email asking you to select which Sundays you would like to serve. These dates will be saved in your Planning Center account and you’ll receive reminder emails as the date approaches. We know that some of our married couples that use Planning Center share the same email address. If you do, here’s what we need ONE of you to do: (One of you may keep your current password, but the other needs to create a new one). Enter the link to get to the sign-in page of Planning Center at https://accounts.planningcenteronline.com. Type in your email address and click the checkmark button. Remember, if you share an email address with another Planning Center user, you must keep track of which account you’re accessing when you are signing up or making changes to your schedule. Another hint: any time you’re in Planning Center you can identify the account by looking at the top right of your browser window. Thank you for your patience as we continue to learn this software. Please call Susan Myres with questions, 480-895-6782.

Altar Guild Training Beginning Thursday, April 6th at 11 am, in the Sanctuary, there will be Altar Guild training for anyone interested in volunteering for Altar Guild set-up, and another immediately following at 1:00pm for anyone interested in volunteering for Altar Guild serving. These trainings, with the same information, will be repeated on Wednesday, 4/12 and Thursdays, 4/20 and 4/27 at the same times. On Wednesday, 4/12, there will be an evening training at 6:30pm. For questions, contact Linda Peiffer at 480-993-6083 or Joan Lange 602-405-8910.

The Perfect Place The Perfect Place is the adult day care facility on the campus of Risen Savior. We have approximately 30 friends who attend our sessions. We also have a team of nearly 55 volunteers who offer their time to join one of our sessions. However, with summer just around the corner, several volunteers will be leaving...so...we need volunteers to join us...especially for our afternoon sessions. Please prayerfully consider joining us for 1 or 2 afternoons a month at your convenience. Call the office at 480-895-2892 for information. The Perfect Place is part of the recently formed Sun Lakes Creative Engagement Partners. The partnership also includes Neighbors Who Care, Oakwood Creative Care, Alzheimer's Association, Tessa Windt (teaching artist), and Wayne Mangold (caregiver), all working together, creating programs for those with age related challenges. The Sun Lakes United Methodist Church is providing space for two activities at this time...making music...therapy for Memory and Parkinson diseases. This program is designed by ASU School of Music therapy. They meet on Thursdays at 1:00. The Oakwood Creative Care's C.A.R.E.S. program will also be meeting at the church. The Perfect Place is hosting multiple presentations for caregivers throughout the year and is offering a scholarship to the caregiver for their loved one to attend The Perfect Place during the presentation. These presentations are being held in the Fellowship Hall of Risen Savior. Tessa Windt, representative for the Arizona Commission on the arts project, is instrumental in involving the partnership in a pilot program for art engagement for those with Parkinson's and cognitive impairment. Piece Maker Quilters The quilting group continues to be very productive. Quilts and bandages have been mailed to Global Health Ministries in preparation for their Spring Gala to be held in Minneapolis. These quilts mean so much to the mission hospitals who receive them overseas, helping them wrap patients in God’s healing grace. Each stitch sews the love we share in mission together. As our winter visitors are returning home, we are so grateful for their help, they will remain in our prayers. If you are in the area on Wednesday afternoons between 1:00 pm and 4:00pm, please stop by the Fellowship Hall to see our group busy doing the Lord's work.

Lutheran Women’s Missionary League (LWML)

Membership in the Lutheran Women's Missionary League consists of women who are communicant members of the LCMS congregations and who participate by promoting the LWML programs. This is an excellent opportunity to experience Christian fellowship with other women of Risen Savior Lutheran Church. Saturday, April 8th at noon is the annual Spring Luncheon in the Fellowship Hall. 2017 is the 75th anniversary of the founding of the LWML. We will be celebrating and thanking God for His blessing upon this organization. A devotion, entertainment, and a speaker will be part of the program. The next LWML meeting is on Thursday, April 13th, at 1:00pm in The Pathway Center. The Bible study will focus on the Third Article of the Apostles’ Creed. Let us “grow in the grace and in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ”. Please join us!
