However, Queensland PremierAnnastacia Palaszczuk saidsoutheast Queensland should notexpect a repeat of 2011.
‘‘The advice that I havereceived is very clear: this is notlike the 2011 severe weather eventwe experienced,’’ Palaszczuk said.
‘‘Prior to 2011 we had thewettest December on record andthe catchments were saturated,’’she said. ‘‘We are seeing localisedflooding and further modelling isbeing done.
‘‘But I want to reassure every-one in the southeast, that this isnot like the 2011 weather event.’’
The massive storm cell,crossed the Queensland coast yes-terday morning north of Yeppoonas a Category 5 cyclone. By 6pm ithad downgraded to a Category 2cyclone and weakening.
Shortly after 8pm it was down-graded further to a Category 1 sys-tem, according to the Bureau ofMeteorology. A category one cyc-lone has winds of around 85 kilo-metres an hour with wind gusts to
120kmh, according to the bureau.Last night, Cyclone Marcia had
winds near the centre of 110kmh,with wind gusts to 155 kilometresper hour. It had lashed bothYeppoon and Rockhampton with140kmh winds, stripping bothtowns of power.
Earlier, Palaszczuk warnedthat even though Marcia hadweakened it still packed a punchfrom damaging winds. ‘‘There are
still destructive winds, please stayin your homes,’’ she said.
Palaszczuk said 500 staff weremoving to the Central Queenslandcoast to begin restoring power toYeppoon and Rockhampton.
The army had been asked toprovide assistance and was likelyto be joined by counter-disasterunits from today, she said.

some flights had been cancelledand the airports asked customersto check with their airlines.
Cyclone Marcia was expectedto hit the Sunshine Coast andBrisbane early today before mov-ing southwards towards the GoldCoast. Last night there were floodwarnings for the Fitzroy(Rockhampton), Mary, Noosa andMaroochy rivers, with the Fitzroyappearing badly swollen.
Brisbane’s Lord Mayor Gra-ham Quirk said the biggest dam-age risk facing Brisbane todaywas from localised flooding andfrom trees ripped from their rootsduring expected strong winds.Brisbane was expecting 200mm to300mm of rain today.
The risk of local flooding –mainly in Rocklea, Acacia Ridge,Woolloongabba, Stones Corner,Morayfield and Bowen Hills –depended on the intensity oftoday’s rain.
Quirk says the timing of therain would determine if there wasany flooding. ‘‘For example if it allfalls in a two to three-hour period,then yes, we have a major prob-lem with our creek system, but ifwe have steady rain, with a littlebit of heavy rain from time totime, then we will cope reason-ably well.’’
The biggest danger on the GoldCoast is from local flooding, stormand tidal surges, Mayor Tom Tatesaid.

Ms Bone, who operates theBIG4 Bellarine Holiday Parknear Queenscliffe, addressed thisweek’s Tourism and Events In-dustry Development Conferencein Townsville on using socialmedia to grow brand awarenessand revenues.
“If you are clever and commit-ted with your audience, you havethe greatest opportunity forreach, for audience engagement
and maximising the opportunit-ies for return on investment,” MsBone said.
“It’s a really dynamic space tobe involved in because it’s a levelplaying field for the big guys aswell as the small guys.”
Her advice for Townsvilletourism operators was to “juststart”.
“Get amongst it because youneed to make the most fantasticmistakes in order to get ahead,”she said.
“Be brave, be confident and bea real person. It’s OK to be
cheeky, to be a bit irreverent, tobe human.”
Ms Bone uses Instagram,
Facebook and Twitter. The holi-day park’s Facebook accountshows 30,418 likes and 5077 visits.
While social media could be-come “like an addiction”, chasinglikes and comments, Ms Bonesaid if you were clever, you needonly spend one or two hours aweek online.
“There’s amazing apps thathelp you with visual gorgeous-ness and putting quotes in visu-ally attractive mediums,” shesaid.
She said if she were in retail,she would be “all over” Instagrambecause it was so visual, allowingyou to display constantly chang-ing lines of stock.
She used Twitter more forblogging and blogger communi-cation “which is a different kettleof fish”, Linkedin for professionaldevelopment and networkingand a Facebook presence to in-teract with her followers.
“I use Facebook for big num-ber and big reach,” Ms Bone said.
She started with one followerafter taking on the business in2009.
“We run a 100 per cent digitalstrategy so I would say it’s unbe-lievably important,” she said
Being a mother with fouryoung children under 10 years ofage helped her to market thepark to young families, she said.

Travelling down the M1 forthe first time as Education, Tourism and Commonwealth Games Minister, the Ashgrove MP squeezed two functions into the three-hour trip.
First stop was the top of theQ1 building in Surfers Paradise where tourism heavyweights were waiting on level 77 to hear how she was going to ensure the Gold Coast retained its crown as tourism capital.
Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games chiefs were also there eager to meet their new boss.
Ms Jones didn’t dwell on the detail four days into the job.
But she wowed the small crowd with talk of consultation, growth and success.

The proposal is under con-sideration, although airportchief executive Kevin Browninsists no final decision hasbeen made.
Taxis have been paying a$3.50 exit fee for the past fiveyears. Taxi operators met air-port executives yesterday todiscuss the move.
Mr Brown would not bedrawn on whether the airportwas considering charging allmotorists dropping off passen-gers, which is the case at Edin-burgh Airport in Scotland.
He was Edinburgh’s man-aging director before arrivingin Cairns three years ago. Thefee starts at one pound ($2) forthe first five minutes.
He said the airport’s discus-sions with the taxi companywere part of an overall review
of its ground transport and ac-cess network.
“At this stage we are stillconsidering a range of optionsand time frames. Nothing hasbeen decided, nothing hasbeen ruled in or out,” he said.
“It’s worth noting taxi fees
have not changed since 2013.Some of the revenue generatedby taxi fees has recently beeninvested in upgrades to ourtaxi amenities building, whichI can assure you is a very wellused facility.”

Layne Gardiner said the com-pany was not happy about theproposal but it seemed inevi-table. He said it would add an-other 15 to 20 per cent to faresand would have to be paid bypassengers.
Mr Gardiner said the costwas still to be negotiated. Forthe past five years taxis havecollected an exit fee of $3.50which is also passed on to cus-tomers.
He said the extra fee wouldlead to a drop in patronage.
“When GST was introducedand at the same time a fare in-crease we lost 20 per cent ofour business. This could be thesame,” Mr Gardiner said.
“We believe people will re-sist the charge and use alterna-tive ways to get to the airportsuch as private cars.
“It will make us uncompeti-tive. We are still in discussionsand the board met with the air-port yesterday.”
Taxi owner-driver Noel Be-itzel is livid and will fight thenew fee.
“We feel it’s absolutely dis-gusting and almost criminal,”he said.

The LNP Government atthe time set up a temporaryagreement with Hinterlandand West Wing Aviation. MrGordon said the government
could not rush into a decisionabout air services because itwas important to make sureany plans were sustainable.
“We don’t want to be in thesame situation in six months,”he said.
Mr Gordon has been speak-ing with West Wing and Hin-terland about establishingpermanent services to CapeYork and also to Regional Ex-
press (Rex) who has shown arenewed interest after earliersaying it was postponing plansto service the region.
The MP said he was hopefulthat the Transport Ministrywould announce its decisiontomorrow.
“They’re looking at a num-ber of resolutions,” he said.
