    The main towers are clad in an aluminium and glass curtain wall with a large glasspodium area at ground level. The curtain wall on the main tower will wrap around thebuilding with a small section of glass wall cover at the lift area. At the roof, the curtainwall will continue past the roof in a spiral affect.

    A, This project is the proposed new combined residential, office and holel developmentin Tripoli libya. The building will consist of 3 main towers circular on plan linked atthe base by a podium retail space.

    The work of this Section is performance based, and shall be developed, tested andwarranted to comply with the design intentions indicated on the Drawings, specifiedperformance criteria and requirements, and relevant statutory and projectrequirements.     The Tender Drawings and Specification are written in English.

    The Sub-contractor is to provide an experienced Design Manager and QualityControl Manager able to communicate in English. This is to ensure that the technicalrequirements of Intemationai Design Standards referred to herein, written in English,are fully complied with.

    All calculations, drawings and technical documents (quality plans, company profiles,etc.) shall be wrillen in English.

    Provide all labor, materials, and equipment necessary to provide a complete curtainwall system, and shall also design, engineer. test, fabricate, deliver, install, maintainand guarantee complete curtain wall as per the architectural concept designincluding, but not limited to, the following:

    1 Exterior aluminum curtain wall, window wall, windows, doors, canopies,automatic sliding door, glass, glazing accessories, gaskets, sealants, flashings,vents, doors, hardware, multi-point locks, opening limit deVices, safety rails,louvres, grilles, blanked off panels, bird screens, cleats, fixings, components toprevent galvanic action, stainless steel BMU plunger tie-backs and receptorsfor the curtain wall, interior aluminum trimming. Pre-formed metal panelsystem, soffits. sills, jamb returns, with anchors, embeds, reinforcements andaluminum copings.

    2 All glass and glazing for the above components, including the fin walls.

    3 All sealants, caulking, joint fillers and gaskets in conjunction with the abovecomponents for weather tight perfonnance in the fabrication and erection of thecurtain wall systems.

    4 All anchorage of above components, including pre-set inserts in concrete slab,bracing to or bracing of structure, kickers, reinforcing etc. as required.Contractor shall be responsible for the bracing s:.ucture when wall lickersindude rotation into structural members.

    5 Field testing of installed work

    6 Pro-type performance Testing at approved laboratory.

    7 All internal ( to the system) vents, trims, weeps, weep tubes, bellows, baffles,closures, end dams, gutters, flashings as shown or as may be required inconjunction with the system or to join the system to adjacent construction.

    8 Fire safing and smoke seals at siab edges, inclUding support system.

    9 All external wall exterior wall insulation and vapor barrier required on aboveitems.

    10 Patching of sprayed on fire proofing at kickers, anchor, or bracing attachments

    11 Protection and cleaning.

    12 All engineering calculations and shop drawings of the system, includinganchorages. Drawing shall be presented so other contractors cancoordinate their work..

    16 Provide all material samples as requested by the Architect.

    17 Integration of exterior light fixtures, wiring conduit, transformers andassociated accessories.

    18 Steel frames for curtain walls together with fixings back to the buiiding (exceptthose indicated on the Tender Drawings to be installed by others) shall bedesigned and suppiied by the Curtain Wall Sub-Contractor.

    A Prepare, submit, and implement a detailed project specific Quality Plan.

    Products shall be reputable proprietary products, lactory manufactured under ISO9002. Submit quality assurance documentation for all bought-in products, includingISO 9002 certification and evidence of satisfactory long-term performance insimilar commercial conditions.

    B. Engage a single firm to assume undivided responsibility for fabrication andinstallation and total coordination of all components of the curtain wall work. Thisfirm must demonstrate not less than 10 years successful experience in fabricationand instaliation of work similar in height to the work of this project. The work of thissection shali be performed by a Contractor, who is regularly engaged in theengineering, fabrication, finishing and installation, of similar work.

    C. If possible, all fabrication shall be done using CNC digital machines with automaticprogramming.

    D Appoint an Independent Checking Engineer for review and checking of alicalculations and drawing submissions. Submit name and details.

    E Architect and Fayade Consultants ane to be given sufficient notice (not less than 24hours) so that inspections may be made of the following:

    Required testing prototypes and first constructed exampleslbenchmarksconstnucted and ready for inspection or testing.Commencement of any required testing, on or off site.Factory inspections.Fabricated assemblies at the factory ready for delivery.BUilding substrates, including sub-framing, prepared and ready for theinstallation of the fabricated assemblies, with anchor brackets and otherattachments (including BMU components and lightning conduction) fixed inplace.Pneparation for. and commencement of, any site glazing or re-giazing.Field tests inclUding gutter testing and water testing.Any other inspection as may be required at the Facade Consultant's discretion.

    F For panel inspections in the factory, the minimum number of paneis to be availablefor inspection shall be agreed with the Main Contractor, 10 approval of theArchitect, but generally shall be in logical groupings of finished wor!

    3. Compliance with manufacture~s (ecommended installation procedures (oncommencing fabrication and periodically).

    4. Compliance of performance design, including materials and components, withContract Documents (on completion).

    5. As a cond~ion of supply, the manufacturer and/or supplier of components andmaterials shall be required to:

    6 Inspect the Contract Documents, and certify the suilabil~y of proposedmaterials and products for the relevant substrates and cond~ions, duringTender period.

    7 WMess the first site installation of each type and condition, and certify thatthe preparation and installation procedures are in accordance with themanufacturer's written recommendations and have not in any way breachedthe manufacturer's warranties.

    8 Periodically inspect the ongoing and/or subsequent installation(s) to ensurethat certified procedures are being mainlained.

    9 Following certification, the installer shall not vary the methods of preparationand inslallation from that recommended by the manufacturer.

    10 The first completed Benchmark area shall constitute not less than 25 sqmand not less than 5 m of lineal work of each type of system, and shall includeany non-slandard parts. These constructed examples are to be inspected andapproved by the Archilect before proceeding with the remainder of work. Theconstructed examples, if accepted, shall be used as part of the permanentworks and shall constil~e a Benchmark against which all future work will beassessed. All further works are required to match or exceed the finishedquality of the accepted Benchmark. The bench mark zone will be required tobe protected to avoid damage and also be made available to view and checknew work being installed.

    The character of these documents Is intended to provide a performancespecification for the design, fabrication and installation of the aluminum curtain wallsystems. Contractor is responsible for the design and engineering as certified by aProfessional Engineer licensed in the State of Libya of all components andmaterials as well as the fabrication, installation and performance of the curtain wallsystems.

    The Tender drawings are diagrammatic and do not purport to identify or solvecompletely, the problems of thermal or structural movement, pressure equalization,vapour barriers, fixing and anchorages. flatness and stability of facing and moisturedisposal.

    The Tender drawings do not purport 10 solve probiems at the glass line associatedw~h glass movement, pressure factor or thermal shock.

    The Tender draWings indicate profile and conf'9uralion required together withrelationship to structural frame and interior building elements.

    E. The Tender drawings contain details that suggest directions for solving some of themajor design requirements, and the Sub-contractor may use these details anddevelop them as he deems best. Alternatives proposed by the tenderer to thedesign nominated on the tender draWings will be considered provided they satisfyall the performance requirements of this specification.

    F. The specification is of the "performance" type and includes the minimumrequirements of the External Cladding and Curtain Wall System without limiting theSub-contractor to the methods of achieving such performance.

    REFERENCE STANDARDS

    A The following sections outline Intemational Codes, Standards and Regulations towhich all work outlined in the Tender Documents must conform. The Sub-contractor is responsible to ensure that all works are in complete compliance withthese and other Codes, Standards and Regulation referred to within thisSpecification.

    No substitution for the following codes will be accepted without endorsementfrom the Architect.The Curtain Wall Sub-Contractor shall be responsible for ensuring all work iscarried out in accordance with local Building Authority requirements.Wherever there is a conflict between different codes, the requirements of themore stringent code shall apply.

    The work of this s.ection shall comply with the latest edition of the following. Whenconflicts arise between references, the more stringent shall apply. The curtain walldesign shall accommodate and incorporate any miscellaneous devices or work asrequired by the standards.

    1B. Subm~ manufacture~s product data and specifications for any materials, orfabrication techniques used in the curtain wall work. Include instructions Irecommendations for installation and maintenance. Include certified test reportsshowing compliance with requirements where test methods are indicated.

    Seal and signature of structural engineer currently licensed in the State of Libya. This shallbe same engineer who signs the calculations.

    Submit structural calculations, sealed by a licensed structural engineer in the Stateof Libya prepared in compliance with referenced do.cuments and specifications.

    When two-part, factory-applied structural silicone sealants are used to adhere any glazingproduct to the building or curtain wall framing. the Contractor shall establish and submit tothe architect, an acceptable Quality Control program to mon~or quality of materials andworkmanship. The Q.C. program shall include. but not be limited to. such items as"butterfly" tests, "snap time" tests, "adhesion" tests. weather seal" tests. "plug" tests andall fabrication and erection procedures. The Contractor shall employ full time qual~yassurance staff in both shop and field who will prepare daily inspection reports. A copy ofthe daily inspection results shall be available to the architect for his records. The qualitycontrol program shall include a full negative design pressure test of one full size vision andspandrel unit from the production line at the rate of one every 50 units. The test to beconducted at the Manufacture~s facil~. The Contractor may use the test un~s on theproject at the conclusion of successful test results. A failure of any tested unit will requirethe testing of the two (2) additional units manufactured immediately before and after thefailed un~. Depending on the success or failure of the subsequent test, and thedetermination of the cause of initial, additional tests may be required by the architect

    1.10 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS

    A. The curtain wall and glazing systems generally shall be water proof and wealher proof,able to support all dead loads, wind loads, live loads and other loads imposed on thecurtain wall system, accommodate all movements due to base structure movement anddeflecUons and thermal expansion and conlracUon, and generally retain Its appearance forthe service life of the system without failure or breakdown of individual materials andcomponents.

    B. Methods of fabricaUon and assembly (except as specified herein, or as recommended bythe Architect as a consequence or result of testing), shall be at the discretion of theContractor (subject to acceptance by the Architect) provided that the exterior and interiorvisible architectural effect is not changed, the work of other Conlractors is not affected, andlhe weather lightness and strength qualities, as demonstrated by engineering calculationsand measured by the results of the test for requirements, are not reduced.

    C Remedial measures, which may be necessary on the mock-ups or lhe building, shallmaintain standards of quality and durability, and are subject to acceptance by the Architect.

    o The work, as erected,' shall meet or exceed the herein specified minimum structural andweather resislance requirements, as demonstrated by engineering calculations and testingof mock-ups.

    E All fayade elements are to be designed for 50 years design life for slructural Integrity and a25 year serviceable life for duration to first major maintenance.

    F Additional slructural glazing requirements: Slructural glazing adhesive conlact surfacesshall be anodised, PVF2 or A10dine Conversion Coated. No structural glazing adhesiveshall be applied to mill finished aluminium surfaces. Adhesion tests are required to assessthe correct cleaner and primer to be used.

    G BASE BUILDING TOLERENCE

    The concrete shall be designed to accommodate the primary structure constructiontolerances allowed to tihe Main Contractor. Unless otherwise noted, the maximumconstruction tolerances shall be taken as follows:

    Aluminium tolerances regarding thickness, straightness. twisting and flatness generallyexceed 50% of ADCA Aluminium Standards and Data-Wrought Products.

    Aluminium sheets for cladding panels shall be tension levelled.

    Flatness of architectural stainless steel shall be not less than "stretcher level" grade.Submit manufacturer's specifications.

    INSTALLATION TOLERANCES

    In addttion to required fabrication tolerances. all parts of the curtain wall, when completed,shall be within Ihe following tolerances:

    Posilion on plan, or vertical surface: +/- 3 mm.Deviation in alignment: Not more than 1 in 300Deviation in level (horizontal): Not more than 1 in 300Deviation in plumb (vertical): Not more than 1 in 800Offset in alignment of adjoining surfaces: +/- 0.5 mm.Offset in alignment of separated surfaces: +/- 1.5 mm.

    Site check the cumulative effect of all building tolerances and adjust installation proceduresas required.

    WATER-TIGHTNESS

    The curtain wall system is 10 be a fully unitised, drained joint pressure equalised system,which shall be 100% watertight, allowing no water to penetrate to the interior of thebuilding. The syslem shall be designed such that water being drained in the system shallnot cause any damage to the penmanent works. The system shall not be face sealed andshall not rely on wet seals.

    Provide a complete water drainage and control system, including pressure equaliseddrained joints, gutters and troughs.

    Water that enters the system, including leakage and condensation, shall be drained ordischarged to the exterior face of the curtain wall system. Water shall not be trapped orretained in the system. Minimise risk of algae or fungal growth

    Where the control device is not pressure equalised, provide mechanical baff1~s to drainageoutlets such as weep holes and slots.

    Sealants and gaskets, which are Inaccessible In the installed system, shall remain effectivefor Ihe service life of the system.

    All glazing rebates, backpan cavities, stack joints, window & doorframes, working louvresand external trims are to be outward draining. Louvres are to be designed so they sit on acatchment tray that will capture any water particles that pass through the system and dripdown inside.

    Drains are to have baffles to prevent the ingress of wind driven water.

    The effect of the drainage system on air now and the partial or full pressure equalisation ofthe system shall be considered in the design of Ihe cladding and backpans.

    AIR-TIGHTNESS

    The design and installation of the air sealing shall be carried out to high standards tominimise air infiltration. Co-ordinate with installers for adjacent work to achieve thespecified maximum air infiltration at junction with curtain wall systems.

    OTHER ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS

    Provide for all weather and precipitation conditions. Submit full details on shop drawings,including all assumptions.

    Design and install all curtain wall systems and cladding systems (generally and allcomponents) to provide for noiseless movement caused by thermal expansion and whensubject to dynamic loading caused by wind as well as BMU and cleaning operations. Thesystem shall not generate noise due to creaking, drumming or rallie. All curtainwalUcladding surfaces/roofs shall not whistle due to wind.

    Metal to metal contact between inter-locking members is not permitted.

    Lightning Protection:

    The Sub-contractor shall coordinate with the Electrical Sub-contractor for the properbonding of the curtain wall at specific locations (as dictated by the curtain wall Sub-contractor) to the main lightning protection system provided by the Electrical Sub-contractor.

    Provide electrical continuity and conductivity within the curtain wall system.

    The Subcontractor shall carry out and demonstrate the uniqueness of lightning protectioncharacteristics of the curtain wall system according to the manufacturers standardrecommendations. The Sub-contractor is then to test jointly with the Electrical Sub-contractor for the successful amalgamation of the curtain wall lightning prevention propertyinto the main (lightning protection) system provided by the Electrical Sub-contractor.The Sub-contractor is to co-ordinate with the Electrical Sub-contractor for the details ofconnection tabs and make all necessary provisions for the earthing strap connection.Earthing straps are to be provided and installed by Electrical Services Sub-contractor.

    Smoke isolation and Fire Separation:

    Design entire system to provide smoke isolation between floors and elsewhere as required.Provide baffles fixed and sealed between base structure and curtain wall system_ Submitdetails on shop drawings.

    Provide materials and methods of fabrication, installation and sealing which meet thestatutory requirements. Use materials that are non-eorroding, or protected againstcorrosion, or of such thickness that corrosion will not impair the required fire stopping orsmoke flashing function during the service life of the system.

    The gap between the curtain wall and the concrete slab edge is to be filled with a BuildingsDepartment approved insulation material with a 2-hour fire resistant period. This includesall horizontal and vertical joints that for a compartment in the building.Weathering:

    The system and its components shall not fail to comply with performance requirements dueto the effects of weathering. This include degradation of components both inside and outdue to UV, dust and other natural causes.

    FIELD TESTING

    A The Owne, will engage a qualified independent testing and inspecting agency 10perform field test and inspections and to prepare test reports.

    B A minimum of six air and water tests will be performed in field during construction.Area and time of tests shall be per the direction of the Architect Tests to beconducted per AAMA 501.3 at specified design pressures (No Reduction).     Setting blocks must be 80 to 90 durometer extruded silicone rubber per ASTM C115 and a minimum of 100mm long. Actual size of setting blocks to conform to theFGMA Guidelines. All setting blocks shall be positively restricted from lateralmovement.

    Side spacer blocks shall be 65 + 5 durometer extruded silicone rubber, ASTMC115, properly sized and profiled for intended application.

    Vision glass re-glazing at curtain wall to be from the exterior. Vision glass ra-glazing shall be done without removal of adjacent surrounding condition. Spandrelre-glazing shall be from the exterior.

    Glass types and thickness shall be not less than indicated in Appendix A of thisSpecification: Materials Schedule. The Glass thickness is to be determined inaccordance with relevant Standards, functional requirements including design windloads, deflections and safety, and manufacturer's recommendations. Submitcomputations. Visual distortion of the glass will not be acceptable. The Sub-contractor shall increase the glass thickness as necessary to prevent visibledistortion from oCClJrring. All glass in the same visual plane shall be the samethickness unless otherwise approved in writing.

    Thermal stress:Submit computations demonstrating the elimination of thermal stress breakagerisk, methods of overcoming thermal stress problems, and all assumptions. TheSub-contractor shall consider all potential risk locations including but not limited tothe following:

    Heat bUild-Up at shadow boxes and other un-vented spaces/zones.Make provision for internal curtains or blinds, wihich may temporarily create un-vented spaces prone to heat build-up adjacent to the vision section of thecurtain wall system.Shadowing effects.
