Metro Tunnel work soon to ramp up

Great team effortGreat team effort

Major work is set to ramp up next month on the Metro Tunnel project, with extensive geotechnical investigations now complete.

This week Premier Daniel Andrews joined Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan at the project’s huge storage facility in West Melbourne, where nearly 10 kilometres of soil and rock samples are housed.

Over the past two years, more than 270 boreholes have been drilled up to 50 metres deep along the Metro Tunnel alignment. The samples collected show that the sedimentary rock beneath the city was formed 416 to 440 million years ago.

They provide critical information about ground conditions under the city, which will inform the design and construction of the Metro Tunnel and its five new

underground stations. With geotechnical investigations

complete, work is now set to ramp up next month on the $10.9 billion mega-project.

Early next month, City Square will be surrounded by hoarding and closed for several years.

During this time construction crews will dig more than 11 storeys below the city to build the brand new underground stations.

Exciting times ahead!

Infrastructure quick to respond to reliability challenges at Newport

Teamwork has played a pivotal role in responding to some recent reliability challenges at Newport.

The Signals and Track challenges were impacting Operations, so what better way to solve the issue than with a cross functional collaborative approach.

Last Friday 17 March, colleagues from Infrastructure, Operations and Engineering came together on site at Newport. The team went out on track to see firsthand the multiple interlocking systems controlling the junction. It was here they were talked through the scope of upcoming point renewal works aimed at improving the situation.

Nick King, General Manager Network Operations, said that over two hours everyone was given a detailed walk through of the junction and the upcoming planned works.

“This resulted in us agreeing to an unplanned occupation in the first week of June. At this time the points on the crossings will be maintained, replaced and the points machines will be upgraded, significantly improving the reliability of the upside junction at Newport,” he said.

“The team site visit was very successful. Everybody was able to bring together their different perspectives on suspending the service for a whole weekend, which is what the requirement is in order for the works to take place. The upside is that the junction will become significantly more reliable, so through great teamwork we found a solution,” Nick added.

Director of Engineering, Paul O’Halloran, and Director of Operations, Ron Bria, were also part of the group involved, along with Infra, Operations and Engineering colleagues.

Teamwork was the priority at a recent site visit at Newport - with Operations, Infrastructure and Engineering present, it was ensured all needs were met.

MaD about getting involved It was a bright and early start for our Corporate Services colleagues yesterday, with the team getting behind our Dandenong Station Community Stations initiative, as part of their MaD day commitments.

You may recall that MaD day – Make a Difference day – is a quarterly forum whereby our Corporate Services colleagues come together to foster staff and community engagement. This quarter was all about working with the broader Dandenong community, with a focus on youth and school children.

The Corporate Services team worked closely with station staff to offer a range of activities yesterday between 7am and 9am at Dandenong. There were two groups of dancers, free health checks and free fruit, as well as biscuits provided by the local Sen Bakery. The event was well promoted with a poster designed by colleague Aidan Chen. In the lead up, flyers were distributed at a local festival.

A huge thanks to Jude Mathews, Dandenong Station Master, for partnering with our Corporate Services colleagues to bring these initiatives to life. Thanks also to Soraya Dean (Corporate Relations) for her guidance and support.

Congratulations to Julie Weste, Stacie Harrison, Aidan Chen, Lara Cartwright, Ankur Bhargava, Jorge Miravete and the others involved in this fantastic work.

While driven by Corporate Services, Customer Experience played a great supporting role in bringing each dimension to life.

As these photos show, it was a fun and engaging morning for our passengers as well as the broader Dandenong community.

High capacity occupations Preparations are in full swing for a series of line closures over a two-week period, kicking off on 26 March.

The activities include the first major rail systems upgrade works to support the introduction of High Capacity Metro Trains (HCMTs), level crossing removal works, as well as MTM maintenance works between Dandenong, Cranbourne and Pakenham.

Tony Martin, Integration and Interface Manager, explained that the works between Dandenong, Cranbourne and Pakenham expand beyond the realms of the Caulfield to Dandenong Level Crossing Removal Project.

“It will ultimately improve the reliability of the entire line between Southern Cross Station and Cranbourne and Pakenham,” he said.

“For the occupations between Dandenong, Pakenham and Cranbourne, we’re expecting about 80,000 people to give the

bus a go each day,” Tony added. Over the next few weeks, the

project’s MTM communications and stakeholder team will host coffee mornings at stations between Dandenong and Pakenham. In collaboration with V/Line, there will also be a customer engagement program on the Gippsland line, as regional passengers are impacted by every line closure for these projects.

The next generation HCMTs will carry around 20 per cent more passengers than existing trains and will be equipped with the latest technology for passenger comfort, accessibility and safety.

These trains will progressively enter service from early 2019, operating first on the Cranbourne-Pakenham lines, and will eventually run through the new Metro Tunnel to Sunbury.

Working at the train wash

An incredible 84 units (three-car carriages) went through the wash plants at North Melbourne, Craigieburn and Epping last weekend.

If you’re not familiar with how our wash plants work, they are similar to a car wash. There are two types of washes: North Melbourne and Epping are drive through and Craigieburn is a static wash. A static wash means the train is driven in and the gantry goes over it while it is stationary, soap first, then a rinse. North Melbourne and Epping require Drivers to take the train through at a very slow speed and it gets the soap and then rinse

on its way through.

The original weekend target of 50 units was smashed! More trains were completed thanks to the midday call between Network Operations, Train Services and Rolling Stock, where the team collaboratively decided to prioritise this work.

Earth hour: This Saturday 8.30pm – 9.30pm

Earth Hour will take place across the world tomorrow night and all employees are encouraged to get on board. What to do? Switch off your PC when you

leave work on Friday 24 or Satur-day 25 March.

Avoid the use of powered elec-tronics (lighting, air con and TV’s) on 25 March 8:30pm – 9:30pm.

Encourage your friends and family to get involved in Earth Hour this

weekend. Learn more here

Hello? Adele draws record crowds… Congratulations to our colleagues at Southern Cross over the weekend, where music artist Adele drew record crowds to Etihad Stadium.

Saturday night saw a huge 75,000 attend the concert, followed by 77,300 on Sunday evening. Our Metro team was ready to manage the massive crowds, with plenty of regular announcements and helpful team members present to answer questions and direct our passengers.

Station Master George Kotsiris – who was the station announcer for both nights up on the Bourke Street Bridge Concourse – thanked the crowd for their patience.

“There were 77,300 of you here tonight and you have all been fantastic!” George announced to the crowd on Sunday evening.

“Apologies that after two hours of listening to that beautiful voice, you now get to the listen to mine,” he said, drawing laughter from the big crowd who were then advised which trains were leaving from which platforms.

George said we are unlikely to see crowds of that magnitude again in the near future.

“Our whole Metro team did an excellent job and we really flew the Metro flag proudly,” he said.

Many thanks to all involved – we

ran an additional 15 services to support each Adele concert and managed to move our customers through Southern Cross Station quickly and safely. We estimate

around 20,550 took the train to and from the Saturday concert, and a further 18,750 chose the train on Sunday evening.

An outstanding team effort!

Fancy taking part in a city loop safety drill?

Our Safety Security and Resilience colleagues are looking for volunteer passengers to help conduct an emergency exercise.

It’s all taking place the evening of Saturday 27 May, when as volunteers you’ll be asked to detrain between Flagstaff and Melbourne Central.

The operation is called ‘Exercise EXODUS’ and it will take place around midnight (Sunday 28 May), taking approximately three hours. This year’s scenario is a disabled

train in the loop, such as when a train loses power.

Hamad Saleem from our Projects team met students at Melbourne Polytechnic.

Hamad shares guiding voice at Melbourne Polytechnic

Last Wednesday 15 March, our Projects colleague Hamad Saleem was invited back to Melbourne Polytechnic as a guest speaker.

Hamad addressed enthusiastic incoming international students from the Overseas Qualified Professionals program – all of whom are keen to work in Australia.

The Overseas Qualified Professionals program provides international professionals with the tools to transition into working in the Australian workplace. As a graduate of the unique program himself, Hamad – a civil engineer – was invited back to join other successful alumni in sharing their experiences.

Drawing on the skills and knowledge gained at Metro and within his studies, Hamad spoke about meeting the expectations of the Australian work environment and how to become a valued asset to employers. During his presentation, Hamad emphasised to newcomers the importance of safety and teamwork as

fundamental values of Australian working culture, which Metro exemplifies.

Although nervous at the outset, Hamad found the experience hugely rewarding. After the presentation, Hamad had the opportunity to speak with attendees about their personal experiences and fielded questions from program participants eager to get their foot in the door at Metro.

“It was remarkable to deliver some important advice to Qualified Professionals from across the globe about Australian work culture and how to effectively be part of the Australian work industry.

“The program empowered me to find a fantastic role with Metro, so I’m thrilled that I’ve been able to pass along some of the lessons I’ve learned along the way,” Hamad said.

All participants will receive a safety briefing and will need to dress safely (closed shoes). A late night meal will be provided – why not take an exciting look into our incident response planning?

If walking through the city loop sounds like something you’ve always wondered about – please contact Eric Nelson via email: [email protected]

More information and a calendar invite will come after initial expressions of interest!

Focus on improving the safety of young women

Listening to the community is the key to running a strong and safe network – that’s why Metro recently participated in a workshop aimed at making the city even safer for young women.

On Monday, we participated in a ‘Free to Be’ design thinking workshop run by Plan International and Monash University. The session follows on from Plan International Australia’s Girls’ Walk and Free To Be interactive mapping tool. The mapping tool asked girls between 14-26 to rate the safety of different spaces around the city.

It was identified that stations (and public transport in general) were places where girls often felt unsafe. As a result, Metro is now working closely with Plan International to make our trains and stations even safer for girls.

Metro attendee Dean Doherty said the session was all about understanding the results and working together to co-design solutions.

“We are partnering closely with Plan International's Youth Ambassadors, Council staff, police

and other transport stakeholders,” Dean explained.

“If we can understand the concerns, we can start to design our stations with a view to improving the safety of young women across our network.”

Joining Dean were Metro colleagues Kate Ryan (Projects), Amanda Hadley (Operations), Sebastien Fleury and Soraya Dean (both Corporate Relations).

“It was a really valuable session – we are absolutely committed to making our trains and stations safe and open to everyone. Forums like this give us an opportunity to listen to how our community uses our network. It also allows our community to have a voice in how we improve our service, ensuring our passengers always feel safe and comfortable,” Dean added.

Congratulations to all involved.

Plan International Youth Ambassadors used a replica of Melbourne City to help communicate their concerns and work through solutions for a safer city.

Calling Year 10 Work Experience Students

Do you know a Year 10 student who may be interested in Work Experience at Metro?

The 2017 MTM Work Experience program aims to give Year 10 students an insight into what it is like to work in today's railway industry.

Learning Coordinator, Vanessa Verga, explained that it’s a great opportunity for young students to explore potential future career options.

“We are looking for ambitious

students who share our values of Safety, Teamwork, Excellence, Passion and Honesty in how we operate,” she said.

“They’ll join the team for five days in a range of business areas. Each year we receive a number of queries about our Work Experience opportunities so we've designed the application process to clearly outline who is eligible to apply and our expectations of the program to ensure a fair selection process,” Vanessa added.

If you know a Year 10 student who may be interested please direct them to apply via https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/MTMWorkExp2017

Applications will close on Monday 3 April and participants will commence after 1 May.

With the introduction of Regional Rail Link a few years ago, Footscray Station trans-formed – it is now bigger and better and operates out of a new station building.

But as our colleague Peter Platky reminds us, there are still some hints of the past throughout the station, including this historic sign at the exit barriers on platform 6 (pictured).

“Many years ago, as a train approached the platform at a suburban station, the Station Officer would personally attend the exit gate and close it when the approaching train stopped,” Peter explained.

“Passengers disembarking from the train would wait patiently at the exit for the Station Officer to re-open the gate, which would only happen once the train

started departing from the station. And for those customers intending to board the train, well they had to be safely on the platform before the gate was closed – or they were out of luck and had to wait for the next train!” Peter said.

This procedure was common place at most suburban stations for many years, gradually tapering off in the 80s and 90s.

“You can see by the spikes on this old gate that any barrier jumpers would have had to be very bold indeed!” Peter added.

This sign at Footscray Station is one of the very few – perhaps even the only one? – left of its type on the metropolitan system.

Thanks so much Peter for sending this in – what a fascinating insight into our network history!

With celebrations hosted at more than 35 sites, and around 2300 employees getting involved, we asked a few Metro employees what they felt about our recent focus on this year’s International Women’s Day…

“The day gave me a hopeful optimism that MTM is starting to put a focus on diversity and raise awareness throughout the business. I think this is important, as without awareness and action, there will be no change.” - Bridget Cullen, Executive Assistant (Engineering).

“International Women’s Day provides us with an opportunity to shine a light on some of the amazing women we have working within MTM. It also allows us to hear from inspirational women within our industry and others that remind us ‘we can’. We can apply for the job, we can put our hat in

“It was fantastic to see everyone within Infra come together to celebrate the day. We are working hard to gain equality and

recognition for women in Infra, and to have so many people from all levels of the business recognise and support this by helping celebrate women's achievements, made me realise that there is hope and we can definitely make a difference!” - Lisa Young, Systems and Quality Auditor Investigator (Infrastructure).

In January of this year, the Health & Safety Representative Development Committee was established to look at how we can continually improve the role and function of HSRs across the business.

Melissa Teo, Safety Promotions & Communications Manager, is chairing the new committee.

"Elected health and safety representatives have a crucial role to play when it comes to achieving a safe and healthy workplace at Metro Trains," she said.

"As a business, there is so much we can do to better guide and support both newly elected and current HSRs to fulfil the requirements of this very important

role. I’m really excited about this new committee and the support it will give,” Mel said.

At the inaugural meeting, the committee – attended by approximately 14 HSRs and a small number of other safety professionals from across the business – had an open and frank conversation about the challenges HSRs face. The team also talked about what they can do to improve engagement, de-velopment and communication.

"We identified a number of initiatives we can undertake, such as providing a collaborative online space for HSRs to access information and tools, and to network with other HSRs in a dedicated online forum," Mel said.

Introducing our HSR Development Committee

Hello! My name is Melinda McInroy - I’m currently the HSR for Stony Point to Aspendale.

I have been working for Metro for seven years and currently working as a signaller at Carrum Station.

I’m extremely passionate about the safety of our customers and my colleagues and hope to make a difference at Metro by making it a safer, cleaner and enjoyable place to work and for passengers to have an engaging experience.

It’s important to me to encourage them to want to travel more frequently and pass on to their family and friends about their experience with Metro.

Hello HSR! Getting to know the team

I am committed to OHS and have seen my safety focus make improvements in the business. I have made quite a few improvements to make it more comfortable for staff to conduct their duties better, from ergonomic chairs and air-conditioning and heating units, to tinting of the glass area near the barriers at Frankston. I have also developed the Safety Inspection Backpacks with essential items, tape meas-ure, chalk for outlining faults, hat, gloves, pen notepad etc., to help with OHS inspections.

I believe I’ve increased moral and well-being of the team by supporting them during times of need.

The Committee also identified the need to better induct HSRs and will therefore be looking to develop a Metro HSR Handbook and Metro HSR Induction. This will build on the five day initial HSR training provided to HSRs on their appointment.

"We also need to work on providing information to Managers and Supervisors on how they can best positively support HSRs to undertake their role. Our HSRs represent the health and safety concerns of members from their designated work groups, so we need to support them and work together to ensure all Metro employees always return home safely," Mel added.

Metro Trains definitely gets a hard time from some commuters but I’ve been absolutely loving the updates over the loud speaker every morning before the train arrives! I also appreciate the updates from drivers if there is a delay on the line. I think PSOs are fantastic as well, especially on the quiet stations at 10pm - it is nice to see them there.
