Install Guide Exchange Server 2007 on Windows Server 2008 Active Directory

By Kefa Rabah, [email protected] Dec 17, 2009 SerengetiSys Labs

IntroductionIt is more challenging to install Exchange Server 2007 (ES 2k7) than any other Microsoftproduct. A list, as in shopping a-like list, will not be good enough; if you want to win the

battle to install Exchange 2007, what you need is a plan, as in a general plotting a military

campaign. However, once you get your planning into project management like scenario then installing Exchange 2007 is as brisk as taking a beach-walk on cool sunny evening. In

this install guide we will concern ourselves with installing ES 2k7 on Windows 2007 ActiveDirectory Domain Controller (DC).

Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 is a messaging and collaborative software product

developed by Microsoft. It is part of the Microsoft Servers line of server products and iswidely used by enterprises using Microsoft infrastructure solutions. Exchange's majorfeatures consist of electronic mail, calendaring, contacts and tasks; support for mobile and

web-based access to information; and support for data storage.

For most businesses today, e-mail is the mission-critical communications tool that allows

their people to produce the best results. This greater reliance on e-mail has increased the

number of messages sent and received, the variety of work getting done, and even thespeed of business itself and of course the anytime anywhere common with todays global

businesses. Amid this change, employee expectations have also evolved. Today, employeeslook for rich, efficient accessto e-mail, calendars, attachments, contacts, and moreno

matter where they are or what type of device they are using i.e., the anywhere anytime

    everywhere access to network resources.

Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 has been designed specifically to meet these challenges andaddress the needs of the different groups who have a stake in the messaging system. The

new capabilities of Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 deliver the advanced protection yourcompany demands, the anywhere access your people want, and the operational efficiency

    you, in IT, need.

Once you have planned, designed, implemented and deployed a robust messaging server

like Exchange Server 2007, and its up and running you can go ahead and push theboundaries of your messaging infrastructure to enterprise level e.g., building small to large

    messaging server.

In this guide, we present a step-by-step installation and configuration of Exchange Server2007 on Windows Server 2008 Active Directory. Well also show you how to add newmailboxes using both the Exchange Management Console (EMC) GUI, and Exchange

Management Shell (PowerShell) command-line. Also to be shown is how to install & set up aPowerGUI to help you with provisioning large numbers of new users mailbox, thereby

avoiding dealing with the dreaded scripting complexity. Youll also learn how to add Telnet

client Feature for testing your Exchange 2007 SMTP. Ill also show you how to configure anduse Outlook Web Access (OWA) to access your emails form anywhere, anytime. Well also

teach you how configure Hub Transport Send & Receive Connectors. Finally, youll also learn

    9. From Fig. 31, under Send Connector tab, right "Rabahtech Internet Email", and

    select Properties, see Fig. 32.

    Fig. 32

Note: The Network tab allows you to specify whether you'll use a smart host (perhaps

an SMTP server at your ISP) to relay your messages, or if you'll handle the delivery

yourself (using DNS). The Source Server tab specifies which Exchange server or

servers in your organization will be responsible for sending Internet email. Click Cancelwhen done examining the properties.

    Step 4: Configure Accepted domains

By default, your new Exchange 2007 servers will only accept email destined to the Windows

domain that the server was a member of. In order to accept email destined to your external

SMTP domain, you will probably need to create a new accepted domain. To do this, performthe following procedure:

    1. Click the Organization Configuration -> Hub Transport, and then select Accepted

    Domains.

    2. Right-click on your domain, and under your domains properties, select the option

desired, and then click OK , as shown in Fig. 32.

Note: If you fail to do this step, people that send you email will probably get an NDR

with the error "530 5.7.1 Client was not authenticated."

    Step 5: Anti-spam configuration

Because Hub Transport servers only need to perform anti-spam functions when there is noEdge Transport server to perform this function, this is another feature that is not enabled bydefault. Adding this functionality to your Hub Transport servers is a pretty simple process.

To do so, perform the following procedure:

    1. Click Start > Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 and then select Exchange ManagementShell

    2. Type "Install Anti-spam agents" and hit Enter key (see Fig. 33):

    completed, click on Close.

Note 2: Alternatively, you can easily install Telnet-Client via command in the command

    prompt, as follows:

    C:\ServerManagercmd i Telnet-Client

If you know before-hand that you will need Telnet protocol, then you can add it to

your batch file during the Exchange Server 2007 prerequisite setup.

    6. Next, open the Command Prompt, and run the telnet command, e.g., "telnet /?":

Part 6: Creating a New Users Account for Exchange 2007

In Exchange 2007, the mailbox creation process has been de-linked from account creation. In other words, when you create an Active Directory account, Active Directory Users and

Computers (ADUC) no longer prompts you asking if you want to create an Exchange mailbox

to go along with the new user.

In this respect, with Exchange 2007, the account and mailbox creation becomes a two-stepprocess: i) Create user accounts in Active Directory and ii) create the user mailbox account

    in Exchange 2007.

So, the steps you see here assume that you have already created a user account in Active

Directory either manually or via a script.

Step 1: Create New User Account under Active Directory

In this section, were going to add new AD user account, to demonstrate how ES 2k7integrates with Win2k8 AD DC.

    1. Click Start > Administrator Tools > Active Directory Users and Computers

Part 7: Creating Users Mailbox ObjectsThis procedure is the starting point of Exchange Server 2007 that allows administrators to

create objects such as Mailboxes, Contacts, Mail Users, and Distribution Groups. Thereare two methods the Administrator can use, these the GUI method with Exchange

Management or second method via the command line.

Step 1 Creating Exchange Users Account using Exchange Management Console (EMC)

Method 1 Creating Mailbox for Existing Users using EMC

To do so, perform the following procedure to create users mailbox object:

    1. Click Start -> Exchange Management Console -> Expand Recipient Configuration

    2. Next, click on Mailbox

    3. In the Mailbox pane, click on New Mailbox..., as shown in Fig. 44

Fig. 44: Creating a new user in the Exchange Management Console.

    4. From Fig. 45, the Introduction page. We have to choose what kind of object we arecreating, in Exchange Server 2007 we have four different mailbox types:

User mailbox: This is a traditional mailbox.

Resource mailbox: This is a mailbox specifically assigned to Meeting Rooms. Its

associated user account will be disabled in Active Directory.

Equipment mailbox: This is a mailbox specific to resources, (i.e., TV, Projectorand so on). As with a Resource mailbox, this kind of mailbox will disabled in

    Active Directory.

Linked Mailbox: This kind of mailbox will be used in environments with multipleforests.

Now, in the Introduction window, select the appropriate mailbox type, and then clickNext to continue.

    Fig. 58: Syntax ofNew-Mailbox Cmdlet

Note 1: As can be observer, from Fig. 58, there are a lot of attributes that can beused but you do not need to use all of them. Only a few are mandatory.

Example 1: As an example, we will create an Active Directory User named "Doug

Smith" and the corresponding mailbox for him. The mailbox is located on "First

Storage Group", in Mailbox Database. The password not specified so the ExchangeManagement Shell will ask for it. In addition it must be reset at the next logon.

    3. Now, from the Syntax, well only copy and use the mandatory part only, e.g.,:

    Remove-Mailbox -Identity 'craig.norman'

Fig. 61: Disconnecting a mailbox from a user account and removing it from Active Directory

Note: As you can see From Fig. 61, Exchange Management Shell has a very good in-built safety as you can observe from within this example there are questions from the

management shell that try to make sure that you know what you are trying to do.

Hence, there is only a minimal risk using the Exchange Management Shell.

Step 3: Change Management - Modifying Mailbox Settings

Again using Exchange Management Shell makes this task, very easy. First just issue the

command "help set-mailbox". And then modify it appropriately to suit your desired needs.

Part 9: Provisioning Multiple MailboxesAs we seen in the sections of the guide, when working with the Exchange Server 2007,

management of single recipients, databases, servers and other objects can easily beperformed from within the Exchange Management Console. However, when you are required

to perform bulk changes of one or more of these objects, you need to turn to the new

Exchange Management Shell (EMS). Again, as we have seen above, working with EMS cannifty once you get the CMDLets syntax right. However, getting CMDLets syntax right especially when working with complex tasks; and under pressure can be daunting even for

an average Exchange Administrator. This becomes even more terrifying for Exchange

administrators with no scripting experience at all can find it extremely difficult to manageobjects using this new command shell. Because a lot of work went into creating consistent

verb-noun pairs (aka cmdlets), most Exchange administrators dont have a problem issuingsingle cmdlets such as Move-Mailbox or Get-MailboxDatabase, but as soon as it comes to

using piping (meaning one cmdlet makes use of the output of another cmdlet) or simplymodifying objects in bulk, most Exchange administrators get stuck.

So question you ask are there any other ways to get around working directly withPowerShell a way that will you to begin mastering the Exchange 2007 cmdlets? Well this is

where PowerGUI comes into the picture. PowerGUI is a freeware tool developed by DmitrySotnikov whos a CTO in the Windows Management group at Quest Software. PowerGUI is

an extensible graphical administrative console, which you can use to manage systems based

on Windows PowerShell technology. You can use PowerGUI with WindowsXP/Vista/2003/2008, Operations Manager 2007 and other new systems from Microsoft. In

this section were going to learn install PowerGUI and then show how it allows you to use therich capabilities of Windows PowerShell in a familiar and intuitive GUI console, especially

    with handling built mailbox creation.

Step 3: Using PowerGUI to Manage Exchange Server 2007

The first thing were to learn here is to show you how you can manage mailbox users in

bulk. For example, to see a list of all mailbox users, perform the following procedure:

    1. Click the Mailboxes object under the Recipients container.

    2. This will give a list of all mailbox user objects, where the Name of the user, Alias,ServerName, and ProhibitSendQuota are the mailbox properties that are listed by

    default, see Fig,. 68.

Fig. 68: Listing Mailbox User Objects

    3. To list additional mailbox properties, you can right click on one of the columns headings(e.g., Name, Alias etc.), and then choose the respective mailbox properties on the

context menu as shown in Fig. 69.

Note: You can clickMore... to reveal a complete list with all properties that are available

    for a mailbox-enabled user object

    Example 1: Prohibit Send Quota

As you can notice from Fig. 68, the Prohibit Send Quota for all users mailbox is currently set

to "unlimited". In this example, lets try to set the quota for the mailbox recipients (Irene,

Sarah and Joe) to value of 3GB (3000000 KB).

To do so, perform the following procedure:

    1. Select the three users, to select each of the users by holding down CTRL while clicking

on each of them, or by clicking CRTL+A to select all, and then de-select the rest.

    2. Once the desired respective mailbox recipients have been selected, click " "

icon Properties in the Actions Pane (see also Fig. 69).3. This will bring up the "Modify... Parameters" dialog box shown in Fig. 70.

    4. Next, scroll down to the ProhibitSendQuota property, and then specify the desired

value, and then click OK .

You may continue to browse around the PowerGUI to get yourself acquainted with some ofits power. In the next section well proceed to see how we can handle creation of multiple

    mailboxes.

    Step 3: Creating Multiple Users

The cool part of PowerGUI comes handy when provisioning mailbox users, which mean that

you can, for example, create 100 or more new mailbox users in a matter of a few minutes.

To provision for users using PowerGUI you first have to export at least one existing mailboxuser to a ".CSV" file.

To do so, perform the following procedure:

    1. To create the ".CSV" file (in our case "users.CSV" select the respective mailbox user(s)

to provision, see Fig. 71. Note: use Notepad or any Text editor to create your CSV file.

    3. From Fig. 73, you can see our newly provisioned mailbox users specified in the CSV filein the high-lighted rows

Fig. 73: Selected rows show our newly provisioned mailbox users.

Note: In order to provision for mailbox users successfully, the .CSV file created must

contain at least the following columns: UserPrincipalName, Name, Database,

OrganizationalUnit, and Password otherwise the import will fail.

Step 5: Using PowerGUI for Reporting

At times you may need to create report on whats going on with your Exchange 2007 e.g.,which users are in certain group or OU. PowerGUI has the option of creating reports with all

kinds of information in them. For example, we could create a report that includes a list of allMailbox users and their associated mailbox limit. We could also make a report of all the

different Exchange 2007 servers in the organization etc. The cool thing about the reporting

feature is that you can export it directly to an HTML file besides XML and CSV files.

To create an HTML report, perform the following procedure:1. To create an HTML report simply select the desired objects in PowerGUI,

    2. Next, click "Export to HTML" in the Action pane, enter the HTML file name & click OK .

Fig. 76: Shows how to select list of the Mailbox users & the produce report in html file.

Were done with PowerGUI for time being.

Step 6: Test our Exchange 2007 with Outlook Web Access (OWA)

In this section were going to use Outlook Web Access (OWA) to that our new users can

access their email. To do so, perform the following procedure:

    1. Fire-up your browser and enter in the Address bar:http://localhost/exchange/irene.wong, and press Enter key, as shown in Fig. 77

    2. Ignore the "Websites security certificate" warning, and click "Continue to this

    website (not recommended)".

Note: Certificate warning, as well see in moment, is because its self-signed and issuedcertificate and not from a recognized CA like VeriSign, Thawte etc.
