Carnegie Hall is Bringing the Arts to Life for the 24th summer!

Carnegie Kids’ College is a summer arts and science program for children who will be entering kindergarten through seventh grade.

Kids’ College consists of three distinct tracks:

1. Classes for Grades K-1: Music, Movement, Art for Kids: three 60-minute classes 2. Morning Session for Grades 2-7: three 60-minute classes

3. Afternoon Session for Grades 2-7: two 80-minute classes

Kids’ College provides children an opportunity to expand their learning, through art and science, in a safe and nurturing environment.

The primary objectives of Kids’ College are to spark creativity and help each child

develop a love of learning through art and science.

Students have the chance to try different art forms at Kids’ College.

They may identify new skills within themselves, and at the same time develop their own

inner creativity. Our teaching artists and volunteers, along with the staff at Carnegie Hall, are eager to provide a learning experience that is positive, fun, and fulfilling. When kids were asked “What was your favorite part of Kids’ College?”, they replied:

“My favorite part was making stuff.” “It was fun!” “I liked making things for friends.” “I liked it when we did the volcanoes and they erupted!” “My favorite part was making new friends.” “The best part was making everything and then taking it home.”

The instructors also enjoy their participation in Kids’ College; “I love having a completely hands-on experience. It makes the art so much more meaningful to the kids.” “The small class size is ideal – great for teaching and learning!”

Meet the Kids’ College Instructors—continued

Dave Pontius was born in Texas and graduated from Cardinal Stritch University with a degree in education. He moved to West Virginia in 2011 and is now the science and social studies teacher at Mountain View School in Monroe County. Dave loves to dig, find, and explore! Lillian Posselt worked as a substitute teacher and a secretary at a primary school before retiring to Lewisburg. For the last four years, she has been active as a volunteer for Carnegie Hall and Kids’ College. Basketry and sewing are her two of her passions, and she would like to pass on her skills to young children. Leslie Skeat learned to weave while studying art at Concord College (now Concord University) in Athens, WV. For over 25 years, she wove and sold her work at craft fairs and festivals. She believes that using color and pattern to create harmonious and functional weaving has been most rewarding for her. She loves connecting with others who share a love for the hand-made! Robin Skillern is a professional artist and educator. She has her master’s degree in Early Childhood Education and her undergraduate degree in visual art. She has worked with children through Carnegie Hall’s Creative Classrooms and Kids' College, Greenbrier County Schools, The New Greenbrier Preschool, and Seneca Health Services. Her pottery, painting, and beadwork have been exhibited in West Virginia, Virginia and Georgia. Susie Smead grew up on Church Street in Lewisburg. She earned her degree in English Education from Marshall University, taught high school for three years in Winchester, VA, and returned to Greenbrier County in 1980. Since then she has been teaching English and reading in Greenbrier County schools. She is passionate about wool and helps Debbie Rapp with her sheep farm in Renick, WV. Caroline Smith has always been a hands-on learner and she passes that on in her teaching style. She has worked with piñatas, clay, concrete, mosaic tile, paper, photography, and dance. Her most current passion involves midwifery, the ultimate creative process. She also farms with her husband in Renick; they vend flowers, fruits, and vegetables at the Lewisburg Farmer's Market. Elizabeth Spangler is a retired software engineer from the Problem Determination Tools Division of IBM Corp. She earned her undergraduate degree in math and computer science from VA Tech (go Hokies!) and her graduate degree in Software Engineering from North Carolina State University. Elizabeth grew up in Lewisburg and is glad to have returned home. April Vincent is most in her element working and playing with young children. She studied Visual Art at Warren Wilson College, received a Master’s degree in Education from Western Carolina University and has been teaching elementary education, special education, and art for the past decade. April teaches at Greenbrier Episcopal School. Ross Weisiger has loved bugs since he was a kid! He made his first bug catching net when he was in 7th grade. He likes to raise butterflies and moths, and he has created beautiful display cases of his butterfly collection. He wants to pass along his love of bugs to kids. On the other hand (or foot?), he has taught folk dancing for years, and he currently teaches folk dances in schools as part of Carnegie Hall’s Creative Classrooms program. Page 23

Meet the Kids’ College Instructors—continued

Sarah Hann earned her bachelor’s in Music Education from Indiana University of PA, and her master’s in Music Performance from Winthrop University in SC. Her main interest is world music, and more specifically, African percussion. Her favorite instruments are the mbira and djembe. Sarah recently moved to Lewisburg as the music teacher at White Sulphur Springs Elementary School. She and her dog, Bentley, are loving it here! Shara Harel grew up in Alderson and now divides her time between West Virginia and Mexico. She is an artist who has worked in a variety of mediums and taught children in many settings. Jason Johans grew up in Lewisburg and attended Kids’ College as a child, and later helped as a volunteer for two years. He acted in many features at the Greenbrier Valley Theatre and he played in many bands around the area. He wants to use his musical talents and knowledge of teaching strategies to provide a fun and valuable learning experience for children attending Kids’ College. Libby Johnson is a retired educator from Greenbrier County Schools. Growing up she spent a great deal of time helping out in the kitchen. Her first 4-H project involved both cooking and baking, and she earned “Best Project” for her efforts. She’s been cooking and baking for family and friends ever since. She and her husband, Greg, live in Lewisburg. Karen Leland taught movement classes in the Louisiana school system for over 30 years. She has worked mainly with pre-school and elementary-aged children. In addition to movement, Karen has also taught needle felting, ornament making, knitting, sewing, quilting, and painting. Mesha Maren is the author of the novel Sugar Run (Algonquin Books, 2017). Her short stories and essays have appeared in the Tin House, Oxford American, The Barcelona Review and Forty Stories: New Writing from Harper Perennial. She was the recipient of the 2015 Thomas Wolfe Fiction Prize and has received fellowships from MacDowell, The Vermont Studio Center, and the Ucross Foundation. Sean O'Connell is an artisan who recently relocated to Alderson, WV, from upstate New York. He has created work using all types of materials including wood, metal, natural fiber and bone, but clay is his preferred expressive medium. Sean has always had a fascination with the art and artifacts of ancient cultures, and this is often reflected in his work. Jennifer Orr has been instructing students of all ages in the visual arts for over 10 years. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Art Education and a master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction in the Visual Arts, both from Shepherd University. Mostly working with paint and mixed media, she also loves the feeling of clay in her hands and hopes to share that love with the young artists at Kids’ College. Dennis Ott has played music most of his life. He received multiple scholarships for Traditional Music Studies at the Augusta Heritage Center in Elkins, WV, and has performed with some of the most reputable musicians in the traditional/old-time genre in films and on public and cable networks. He founded The Ox in the Mud Studio, where he teaches. He is also an instructor with the Monroe Arts Alliance in Monroe County, WV. Page 22

Music around the World (1pm) Instructor: Birch Graves Explore the world through music! From German hip-hop to Tuvan throat-singing, you will be immersed in the rhythms and sounds of far-away places. We will watch videos, listen to recordings, read, write, move, create art, discuss, and, best of all, we will make music. You will play real pieces of music from places like Africa and Indonesia. Let’s go! Week One only Pottery Studio (1pm and 2:40pm) Instructor: Sean O’Connell Explore clay and learn to use hand-building and sculpting techniques. Creativity and skill-building will be the focus of this class. Students can pick up their pottery in late August, after it has been fired in the kiln. Pysanky Ukrainian Eggs (2:40pm) Grades 3-7 only Instructor: April Vincent Using a funnel-like tool, students will melt beeswax in the flame of a candle and apply the wax to the egg in elaborate designs. The egg will then be submersed in brilliant dyes to build up a rich and colorful pattern. We will look at traditional symbolism, and students will have the chance to make several eggs. Rockets and Rollercoasters (1pm and 2:40pm) Instructor: Jason Johans Have you ever wanted to create your own rocket that actually launches? How about design your own working rollercoaster? In this class you can do all that and more while exploring physical science in action through hands-on activities and experiments. Week One only School of Rock (1pm) Instructor: Birch Graves Are you ready to rock out? In this exciting class you will learn about the history of rock and roll. Then it will be time to make some music yourself. You and your classmates will learn real rock songs on easy-to-play percussion instruments. At the end of the week, we’ll perform as part of the Student Showcase. Week Two only Telling Tall Tales (1pm and 2:40pm) Grades 5-7 only Instructor: Mesha Maren-Hogan Do you have stories you can’t wait to tell? Crazy things you have seen or imagined and beautiful images you want to share? We’ll dive into fiction, poetry, and true stories, Then we’ll mix and match and break all the rules! After making our very own journal, we will write in a different style everyday. At the end of the week, we will create a podcast of our very best writing that will be posted on a blog, so you can share your creative genius with all your friends and family! Week Two only *Students in these classes will use sharp felting needles and/or hot glue guns.
