MISSION STATEMENT Holy Family Catholic Church is a spiritually and socially active parish. Rooted in the Word of God and nourished by the Eucharist, we cele-brate the life of our Lord Jesus Christ by proclaiming the Good News and providing spiritual growth, support and service with love. Founded by Italian immigrants a century ago, today our parish continues the tradition of extending a loving, caring and affirming welcome to all who join us as we Continue Our Journey of Faith.

"Safeguarding the Dignity of Every Human Person"

This year, the Church will celebrate Catechetical Sunday on September 20, 2015, and will focus on the theme "Safeguarding the Dignity of Every Human Person." Those whom the community has designated to serve as catechists will be called forth to be commissioned for their ministry at the 10:00 AM Mass. Catechetical Sunday is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. Catechetical Sunday is an opportunity for all to rededicate themselves to this mission as a community of faith.

25th Sunday in Ordinary Time B-2015 My brothers and sisters in the Lord! Today’s Scripture passage is interesting as we take note of the attitude of the disciples. In a nutshell, they just never cease to amaze us. As our Lord begins telling them about His coming passion and death, it is obvious that they are not even listening. Instead they are immersed in a quarrel among themselves, arguing who is the greatest among them. Somehow we would expect a better attitude from His close followers. And when they are confronted by Jesus, they are anything but proud of their discussion. They are clearly embarrassed and they remain silent. Jesus uses this occasion to put them

on the right path and point out to them what constitutes true greatness in God’s eyes. He tells them that true greatness comes from being humble and not from power and influence over people. He goes on to tell them that everyone is important and greatness comes from being available and loving all people even down to youngest children. Children are close to the heart of Jesus because they are innocent, they wear no masks and are uncontaminated by the selfish ways of the world. This is the very basic instruction on the kind of followers Jesus wants each one of us to be. We are challenged in our faith to turn the worldly materialistic ways of life upside down and follow the more humble and loving way of life. In many ways as we are like the apostles, wanting to be greater or better than others due to the competitive world in which we live. At times we can be full of selfish ambition, always putting ourselves first and wanting the best of everything. It is easy for us to think of what we have as completely ours, with no thanks to anyone else. We fail to remember that we are the stewards of the many precious gifts which God entrusts to us and which He intends to be used in His service. Being available and meeting the needs of others means being present in a hundred and one ways, people need to be listened to, understood and appreciated. The teaching of Jesus is certainly no formula for worldly success as it involves constant drudgery and ingratitude. This was the pattern of service Jesus set for us when He washed the feet of His disciples at the Last Supper. Each one of us is called to do the Lord’s work in order that Jesus can give His love through us. Every life gives opportunities to serve others around us. Parents are at their loving best and pleasing to God when they raise their children properly as is a home health aide who puts his/her heart and soul into caring for an elderly person. Being a true disciple means being open to what God may ask of us at any given moment, even in the smallest of things. Peace, Fr. Joe

Pilgrimage of Mercy: Tour of the Major Relics of St. Maria Goretti

Under supervision of Curial officials, the body of St. Maria Goretti has been prepared for shipment to the USA. Throngs of teary eyed locals filled the Basilica where St. Maria’s relics are housed to standing room only. The decree was read aloud informing all of the Pontifical mandate to release them for the Pilgrimage

of Mercy. The faithful were permitted to make a last act of veneration before “their saint” was placed in a specially designed shipping container. The relic will be in New Jersey on Monday, September 21, at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart, 89 Ridge St., Newark, 973-484-4600. Public veneration of St. Maria begins: 9:00 AM. Solemn Mass celebrated in St. Maria’s honor: 7:00 PM by Archbishop John Myers. Public veneration ends: 11:00 PM.

STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE “If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all.” (Mark 9:35) Jesus teaches us that we are called to serve one another. Sacrifice is not a word that many people like to hear. We think it means that we must give up something that we want. However, the literal meaning of sacrifice is “to make holy,” from the words “sacer” = sacred and “facere” = to make. In other words, we make our lives holy by sharing our gifts in the service of God. For Sunday, September 13, 2015 The actual collection was $11,420.00; $1,472.00 of which came from Parish Pay. The 2nd Collection for Steps Repair was $2,024.00. Mass Attendance was 1,524. MARIA SS. ADDOLORATA OFFERING BLANKET

Several years ago, we introduced the “Maria SS. Addolorata Offering Blanket” to the Italian Festival. It has proven to be a beautiful acknowledgment of our Sorrowful Mother. A donation on the Offering Blanket brings hope to the ill, is in memory of the deceased, or is offered for a very special

intention. On the 2nd Friday of each month, a special Italian Mass in honor of The Devotees of Maria Santissima Addolorata is offered for their intentions at 7:00 P.M. During the festival, the blanket will be on display in our Italian Café for the entire 4 days. The presentation of the blanket will take place on Saturday evening, during the candlelight procession following the 7:00 PM Mass. If you wish to take part in the Offering Blanket, you may submit your donation to Holy Family Church along with the intention you wish for the blanket. Kindly make your check payable to Holy Family Church, but mark the envelope MEMORIAL BLANKET. As always, the blanket will be a magnificent tribute to Our Lady of Sorrows. For more information, please call Gina Tamburri at 973-751-4187.

From the desk of Sister Eileen… As you know, on Tuesday, August 4, I had my left hip replaced. Three days later I was moved to a rehabilitation center for a while and then returned to my own home on Sunday, August 16th. Since then, life has been full of therapy sessions, nurse’s visits, etc. God has been very good to me! Although therapy is a challenge, each day, slowly but surely, progress is being made. Knowing me as you do, I have to be reminded daily that this isn't a sprint but a full blow marathon. So with His grace, I try to keep a smile on my face and patience in my heart. When I get the “all clear,” dates will be set for my group gatherings. Again, with His grace they will resume sometime in October. I wish to take this opportunity to extend my heartfelt thanks for your prayerful support, your well wishes and your encouraging cards and notes. You have no idea how greatly they strengthen my outlook and my courage. My brother, Father Joe Hubbert, CM, and my family also wish to express their thanks for your unfailing support. Please continue to keep me in your prayers, peace and all good things,
