international flute summer school“What more do you need from a summer holiday? An enjoyable but challenging five days playing, listening, improvising and having fun. As one of Britain’s finest flautists and teachers, Philippa returns for this well-established friendly but demanding international flute summer course. With her inspirational guidance, she has put together five days of challenging and enjoyable events in an open, friendly atmosphere. Her aim is to enable advanced students- conservatoire entry level /diploma level for participants - to improve their musical freedom, imagination, awareness and expression in solo, chamber and orchestral repertoire.

Every aspect of technique will be worked upon, with particular interest paid to the body and how well it moves in performance, breathing, tone and articulation.

Please note that acceptance on this course is entirely subject to Philippa’s approval.

The course starts on the Thursday evening (arrival between 4.30 and 6pm) and there will be an informal concert by the students on the last day at 3pm, friends and family welcome.

course information Standard Post Grade 8/Diploma level. This course is ideal if you are working towards recitals or auditions, or are preparing for or already at music college. Observers welcome if space allows. Please ask for details.

Repertoire Prepare 3 to 4 varied solo and accompanied pieces including a contemporary work. All pieces to be known thoroughly as well as the accompaniment. The repertoire list will be available soon.

What will you be doing?Each day begins with a warm-up session. This is followed by work on technique, including tone production, breathing, articulation and how to practise.Body Mapping will be included to improve performance.

Masterclasses There will be general sessions and masterclasses given by Philippa. More highlights• There will be a public recital on the evening of Friday 7 August given by Philippa and Jan Willem, free to course members.

• Jan Willem will give a coaching session for flute and piano repertoire.• Ensemble and chamber music coaching will take place every evening. • Joseph Sanders (Alexander Teacher) will work with Philippa on movement issues and posture and will work on how body movements affect playing, how to move better with knowledge of the body, feeling freer, being more expressive and sorting out musical performance issues.• A Latin American class will be a taken by Cuban flute player Jose Zalba.

TravellingBenslow Music’s campus is a five-minute walk from Hitchin train station, which is served by fast, frequent trains from Cambridge, Peterborough and London King’s Cross. Road access from the A1(M) and the M1 is swift, and we are within easy reach of Luton and Stansted airports.

Philippa Davies has established a world-wide reputation as one of the finest flautists currently performing. A ‘first-rate virtuoso’ with ‘exceptional eloquence’ she has been noted for an ‘almost electrical response to technique’. She is in the Nash Ensemble and London Winds and gives masterclasses and recitals as far afield as China and the USA. She has appeared as soloist with the New Stockholm Chamber Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the English Chamber Orchestra, City of London Orchestra and the London Mozart Players with whom she has recorded Mozart’s concertos. Her extensive discography includes Mozart’s flute quartets, Romance for Flute and Harp, and Poulenc’s Flute Sonata. She is Professor of Flute at the Guildhall.

Joseph Sanders teaches the Alexander Technique and Body Mapping at the National Youth Orchestra and the Guildhall School of Music, where he also teaches the oboe. He performs regularly with the London Symphony Orchestra and was a member of Ensemble Modern/Frankfurt for twenty years.

Jan Willem Nelleke has specialised in accompaniment, particularly with singers, and as a former flute player has an extensive knowledge of the flute repertoire. He is also a composer and is at present accompanist tutor at the Royal Conservatoire of The Hague, as well as a member of several chamber ensembles. His playing has been described as ‘sparkling raindrops, rich chords and beautiful interludes’ and an ‘ever alert co-operation with the soloist’. Recent

recordings include chamber music by Poulenc, Schumann and Schubert’s Winterreise, and a recording of the Gershwin Piano Concerto with the Metropole Orchestra. In 2000 he became duo partner to Philippa.
