Checklist – Social Media Actions (Continued)

Whether you are actively searching for your next career move or absolutely satisfied with where you are, you should maintain all of your social media tools at the highest level possible! The following are the top three most important tools within social media that you need to have completed to compete in today’s new era of job search:

Tool Why is it important?

LinkedInVisibility, company job postings, research, being found by recruiters, connecting with targeted individuals who can help you work the “back door” to find hidden jobs and secure interviews. If you are not here, you don’t exist for many recruiters, hiring companies and your future network.

FacebookVisibility, company job postings, research on company Facebook pages. Recruiters use the friend-finding search feature.

TwitterResearch, job leads, learning from others.

Tricks

1. LinkedIn Tricks Apply the principles of search engine optimization (SEO) using keywords and

key phrases. Learn those by dissecting over 10 job descriptions of your future position.

In your summary section, highlight your relevant skills and don’t regurgitate your résumé.

First, update your master résumé, then copy and paste your résumé into LinkedIn so a recruiter sees every detail.

Assure your “Contact” section is working to your advantage. Have a phone and e-mail that you want to use for your career future. For active job seekers, I recommend putting your contact information in your Summary section, too, to make it super easy for recruiters to reach you.

Adjust your “Settings/Privacy Controls” so nobody must see every time you build a new relationship or connect with a recruiter.

Set a “LinkedIn time” an hour a week or more. Make connections, research. Follow target companies and connect with employees. Click the “Follow”

button and, on a weekly basis, monitor their updates. Many companies also have a separate tab that says “Careers” or “Employee Insights,” both of which are very helpful in terms of finding recruitment contacts and hearing more information about hiring at that company. Many companies even post the actual job listings.

Begin your involvement with a number of LinkedIn Groups by commenting constructively on a discussion topic. Or start a discussion if you need help.

Pay attention to LinkedIn Group members. Don’t be shy to click on the profiles of people who contribute. They might turn out to be new connections for you for info interviews or maybe more.

Most importantly, when you connect with anybody, even someone you know, follow the following steps:

o Open their full profile before hitting any “connect” button. Read about them!

o Then, hit the connect button on their profile and leave a personal message.

o Watch for them to connect back under “Messaging”. o Then, get out of LinkedIn and continue your communications with

them in a professionally-worded e-mail.

2. Facebook Tricks If you wouldn’t say something in front of a crowd of 300 million in the real

world, you should not to do it online either. Clean it up!

3. Twitter Tricks Tweetdeck.com easily organizes your hash tags and searches into one

console that you personalize. Twellow.com searches people's bios and URLs on their bios. For example, if

you do a search on <your target company>, a company you would love to work for, then you can see how many of their employees are on Twitter.

Narrow down as much as possible based on your field of expertise. If you are an architect, you can use the search feature to find pages and groups that are created for architects.

Mistakes

LinkedIn Not having a purpose or not understanding why you are on LinkedIn.

Have a reason and build a plan to reach your goals. Failure to participate. If you do not participate consistently, you will

not find success. Presenting an incomplete picture of your strengths. Missing photo or bad photo choice. Using poor grammar, being informal.

Facebook

Many people fail to understand the concept of leaving footprints on the web. Too many people get overly comfortable on social platforms and end up losing jobs and opportunities. Some common examples are saying things that shouldn’t be said in public and uploading images that are too personal or provocative. Clean up your presence: Google your name to see what comes up. Maintain a professional, but fun, Facebook profile.Major mistakes include: Inappropriate pictures Complaining about your current job or current boss or prior jobs and

bosses Posting conflicting information on your résumé Statuses you wouldn't want your boss to see Not understanding your security settings Losing by association—watch what your friends post

Twitter

The word “expert” or “guru” in your title is bragging and meaningless for job seekers.

Not following back. Recycling rather than repurposing content. It’s fine to repeatedly

reference the same blog post over time in your tweets, but avoid continually rehashing the exact same text.

Not retweeting others’ content—tweeting your own company’s content is a great idea, but make sure you also retweet content from other people and other companies that is relevant to your audience.
