Mr. Ier id e sThe man of knowledge

The Falcon School is grieving the loss of our beloved headmasterand founder Mr. Nikolas M. Ierides. Nevertheless, we should celebrate his remarkable life.

Mr. Ierides was an outstanding man and a role model to all of those who knew him. He not only provided uswith a prominent education here at the Falcon School, but he also reformed the School for the Blind, justafter the declaration of independence of Cyprus. At the age of 32 he managed to raise the School for theBlind to the higher standards of the day in Europe, which is no small feat for someone that young. In addi-tion, he worked with the country’s first president, Archibishop Makarios, to transfer the school to the currentbuilding, which was built according to the needs of the blind.

In 1976, Mr. Ierides founded the Falcon School; a place, which would shape many generations to come. Wemay have heard of his achievements, but most of the students currently in the school did not have a chanceto meet him and get to know him. That is why we decided to go to our source of knowledge, the staff of theschool, for a more personal view of Mr. Ierides.

By Erina Zannetou and Andrea Ellina 7P

What do you remember the most distinctly about Mr. Ierides?Mrs Antoniades: “I remember his presence everywhere in the school (the corridors, the classrooms, his office) and his

ability to do the most of everything, from cooking, cutting pupils’ hair, painting scenery, playing the piano, conducting the or-chestra, directing plays, playing football and volleyball to observing lessons, discussing education and the students’ progressand offering advice”

Dr Hadjivarnava: “His love for sports and especially football”

Mrs Lisa: “I remember how he used to give up his lunch breaks to supervise children wanting to swim in the pool”

Mrs Andronicou: “ His great pride in his school and his strictness as well as his high expectations of his stu-

dents and teachers. I also remember his friendliness, his ability to interact with his staff on a social level and his joy when hewas invited to a teacher’s home for coffee or dinner. He was the proud director of the school but at the same time he could bein the kitchen with us, making sandwiches for a visiting school during a Sports Day, or he could be behind the counter, serv-ing his guests during the October cocktail parties.

A sentence about his character:Mrs Antoniades: “He was a visionary, a complex and a fully dedicated man”

Dr Hadjivarnava: “Always straight to the point”

Mrs Lisa: “His door was always open. He was never tired of listening to the children”

Mrs Andronicou: “ Mr Ierides was a complex personality, capable of the greatest

kindness but also the most severe reprimand”

Cookies, posters, stickers andgreat music; sound familiar? Wellit should, as after two weeks ofcampaigning, the Falcon School'spresident for 2013-2014 was fi-nally elected. As in all elections, there were some apt candidates, animated drama, and then a finalwinner; the president. This year, the prestigious title of presidencygoes to Panayiotis Papakyprianou, who was voted by 11 out of thetotal 16 classes, which is no smallfeat. Congratulations to him, aswell as his two (well.. one) fellowcandidate(s), Semina Nicolaou andAndreas Glykeriou! The Presidential drama primarilybegan on the first Friday of theschool year, when the class repre-sentatives were elected for thewhole Secondary Department. Aseach 7th form class votes fortheir own class reps too, thesereps then move on to run forSchool President. In particular, there was one 7th form classwhose class rep outcome wasn'texactly one that was anticipated;and this is where the show began.Disbelief, excitement, anger allmingling together in one after-noon, building up the atmospherefor the official beginning, of elec-tions.

The first cam-paigning ef-forts that

were noticed, werethe incredibly cre -ative stickers by

Andreas, saying 'Vote forGlykeras' using the Gatorade

logo. We were then shortly after-wards presented with Panayiotis'unique and eye-catching posters(including 'PANda' puns), followedby Semina's own 'Making theworld better since 1995' posters.Stickers were a significant fea-ture of the campaigns, and thefact that they were all highly ap-pealing and worn by the majorityof the secondarystudents, made thema pri-marypublic-ityfea-tureforeach ofthe can-didates.

However, the presi-dential elections suffered a hugeturn of events when one of thecandidates, Andreas, withdrew.Needless to say, he had many sup-porters who were more than justheartbroken when his with-drawal was confirmed, and al-though he didn't officially run forschool president this year, he re-mains a class rep with consider-able influence and presence.

Lastly, the two remaining candi-dates gave, what is thought to bethe most significant feature ofthe elections; their speeches. Grit, determination and a desire to rep-resent the student body of TheFalcon, were clearly visiblethrough the speeches. After lis-tening to the candidates' speechesduring the early hours of school, students voted at the end of theday, giving time for all they hadheard to sink in, as well as provid-ing them with enough time tothink their vote through. As eachclass votes in unison for one can-didate, individual voting was doneduring form period, after whichthe overall class vote and theindividual votes were sentfor the final count...And hence, Panayiotiswas elected. The school electionsare one of themajor eventswhere the FalconSchool student bodycomes to-gether tohelp shape

their own futureand school life, andtherefore, after care-fully choosing the presi-dent, all we can say isthat we hope we have asuccessful year ahead ofus, full of enjoyment, co-operation and fantasticmemories!

Q: Why did you decide to become a teacher, lookingback on this decision, would you still have chosen thesame path?A: Well, I believe that teachers affect the future. Teachers mould the futureeach day in class. In fact, teaching is not a job, but a social contribution. Teachersare contributing to the society in the sense that they do not only teach children oryoung adults, but they might influence their way of thinking and the development oftheir character. And, I find this interesting but challenging as well, that’s why Idecided to be part of this contribution.

Q: Which subject do you believe is the most important, and why?A: Maths, and then Economics. Maths teaches you the basics of Economics, andyou really need it in your life. You need Maths for Economics in order to compareand use the results from data and statistics, to prioritize objectives and reach con-clusions.

Q: Why is Economics one of the best subjects to select while atschool?A: With Economics, you understand how society works and you learn how to use the resources you have in order tomake as many people as happy as possible, in other words: satisfy wants.

Q: If you had one magic wish from a genie, what would you wish for?A: To become 18 again… and stay there (laughs) I would want to make the world the happiest it can be, whatever that includes!

Q: Do you have any hobbies? How do you spend your free time?A: Going out, meeting with friends, going to the gym.

Q: What was the wildest thing you did during your school days?A: I didn’t do anything so wild… I would like to stay on the safe side in this interview! (laughs)

Q: Do you have any objectives for this academic year?A: Yes! I aim to have a very productive year, in terms of exam results and getting to know my new Falcon Family.

Q: Do you have any dreams/ hopes for the future?A: I hope to have a happy family and survive this Economic Crisis!

European Youth Parliament

7th National SessionEuropean Youth Par liament; so many thoughts, feelings and unforget tablememories in just 3 words. Those that have been there know exactly what I ’m ta lking about, for those thathaven’t ,here is a br ief summary . The EYP is a volunteer non-prof it organizat ion that invites young people to take par t in some discussionsand a series of debates about topics concerning Europe…but EYP is much more than that, you gain so muchfrom such an exper ience as a person, developing your knowledge and understanding of the world through theteam building activit ies , committee discuss ions and the General Assembly. Here is a taste of th is year’sEYPers:

The European Youth Parliament is not just a session in the summer which lasts for a few days, but an experi-ence which will impact an individual for a lifetime. First when preparing for the conference you start to learn how tobecome a responsible EU citizen, by reading the issues impacting our world today. Once you start learning andreading about global events and how they concern the world, you never stop, its a continuous journey. In additionto this you learn to work with your committee members, gaining valuable team working skills and creating lifelongfriendships . EYP is definitely something I will never forget! -Fania Christodoulides 6B

Constructive? Yes. Fun? Yes. Did itall go as anticipated..? No! From uncoopera-tive and passive committeemembers, to missing chair(person), I think I was def-initely 'baptized with fire'for EYP. The experiencethat I gained however, re-mains unmatched!-Sarah John 6B

EYP is not about who you are,it is about whoyou want to be. Everyone can be an EYPer, just believein yourself and enjoy to the fullest. It’s one of the bestthings that you can only gain from it! Don't hesitateits a life changing experience and totally worth it! -Anastasia Mouskou 6Y

Don't say I won’t be one of the 6. Don't say there is nochance of going beyond the nationals. Don't say it’s boring orhard. I've been to the nationals and still don't know anythingabout economics! Yet just because I showed interest, I madefriends, memories, and believe that dreams can come true!

-Kyprianos Spyrou 6R

"Is it going to be fun? Willit be worth the time? The re-search?"- Personally, I did it aday before the EYP nationalsession."This has to be one of the bestthings i've done this summer. Worth every minute"-The words I said at the end of the session-Nicholas Zingas 6R

The 7th EYP national session in Cyprus was a great expe-rience and will be carved forever in my best memories. Teambuilding, meeting new people, making new friends and eventhe last, sleepless and exhausting resolution night, all mademe determined to apply again for the next session!-Marios Santis 6R

School News

Welcome, my beloved Falconers to another promisingyear, full of creative and innovative fundraising

events that have through the years become a part of theFalcon conciousness. So far, the charity representatives from all the forms havemet twice in order to share and discuss ideas, particularlyregarding where the money collected should be donated. The first fundraising event that took place was the annualsponsored swim on the 4th of October. So congratulationsto all the swimmers and contributors! The money that wascollected was donated to Alkionides, a charity organiza-tion formed and registered in Cyprus in 1998 with the objective to aid those families and indi-viduals in Cyprus who find themselves in the most desper-ate of situations. Finally, I was recently voted head of charity and wouldtherefore like to encourage all of you to be as generous asyou can in order to maintain Falcon’s reputation on being

one of the most generous schools inCyprus that aims to aid the Cypriot com-munity by donating money to reputablecharity organizations and by voluteeringin various events.

Charity News by George Marangos 7P

Even though it was a bit of awindy day, the sun was stillshining on the Falcon school

students who were eagerly awaiting tojump into the pool and start doinglaps! The annual Sponsored Swim tookplace on Friday 4th of October and asusual we had many students participat-ing to swim a number of laps for char-ity. The Primary Falconers were thefirst to start swimming as they swamduring the lunch break. Once thelunch break was over, the SecondaryFalconers dominated the pool withmany students from almost all formsswimming in the lanes. Of course wehad a number of students helping out-side the pool counting laps or our veryagile photographers racing up anddown taking quick snapshots of theswimmers in action! After the tiringlaps the students were rewarded withrefreshing fruit and drinks as well assome delicious cookies and cakes pro-vided by none other than our lovelyParents Association. The sponsoredswim was definitely a success, as usual,as we had our students not only enjoy afantastic afternoon in or by the poolbut also donating money to charity.

This year the Falcon school proudly presents its new community service club, run by Mrs Antoniadesand Mrs Andronikou. It aims to raise awareness among Falcon students and to motivate their partici-pation in assisting their fellow man, in order to help those people and families who are in needand are currently suffering from the economic crisis.Students can help by direct assistance via existing organizations like 'Alkionides', which re-quire volunteers to carry out their programmes of community service; and through fund-rais-ing activities and gathering of goods within the school itself, to distribute to needy families inthe community ourselves!"We hope this will become a feature of the Falcon School's extracurricular programme and to-gether with other charity events will have a valuable and worthwhile impact!"Mrs Antoniades & MrsAndronikou

This is a very exciting year for the Falcon’s MusicDepartment. This is the first year that the school isgoing to provide Music at A-Level. Six promisingstudents are taking the subject, and have great facili-ties at their disposal: the school has the “Sibelius 6”program, which allows them to compose their ownmusic – soon, you will be able listen to their compo-sitions for IGCSE (all of which scored A*) on theFalcon School website. Meanwhile, the lower schoolwill be able to prepare for IGCSE better than ever, thanks to the availability of keyboards acquired justover a year ago, allowing them to practise compos-ing. Meanwhile, the Primary department has a newmusic teacher, Miss Georgia Papamichael, who hasa Masters’ in Music and is working on her PhD ineducation. Additionally, she is able to play the gui-tar, piano, saxophone, clarinet, recorder, various an-cient instruments, as well as sing. She’s great withchildren, having a 5-month-old daughter herself, not to mention how cool she is: she loves rockmusic, and Aerosmith is one of her favourite bands.Music class isn’t the only place to show one’s musi-cal prowess, however: there’s the school talent showlater this year, for which auditions are this February;there’s Musica Live, an inter-school concert takingplace on the 13th of February that the secondaryschool is hoping to participate in; and, of course, themarching band. The primary department getsto flaunt its musical skills aswell, singing at Christmasbazaars all over Nicosia this holidayseason, as well as during its concerton the 18th of December. Events aren’tlimited to the ones mentioned here –with the theatre renovated andavailable for use, the music de-partment is hoping to havemany more performances through-out the year, so stay tuned!

Stelios Ioannou Clean-UpBy Katie Kapodistria 6Y

Strovolos RunFalcon’s school presence for another consecutive year was very noticeable. A lot of Falcon students from primary to secondary, parentsand teachers attended the Strovolos run at the Strovolos Sports Centre, which took place on October 1st at 4:30.Apart from the fact that most of the participants were Falconers, quite a high percentage of the winners of the different subcategories werealso Falcon students. Once again Andrianos Souroullas was the first one who finished, winning the first prize in his category (boys up to14) with Loukas Kartakoulis winning the 3rd prize. In the 12-14 category Maria Codrou came 1st, with Cleopatra Pieridou second. The14-19 category was a great victory for Falcon students winning all 3 medals: Sarah John 1st, Maria Hadjiantoniou 2nd and Ioanna Ros-sides 3rd with Stylianos Demosthenous also com-ing 3rd.Congratulations to all the participants and win-ners for representing their school and themselvesto the maximum!

This year the falcon family started a new tradition by offering morning fitness classes toFalcon parents. On Wednesday the 25th of September the Open Day took place during

which Mrs. Elena demonstrated Zumba, Circuit training and Pilates to those present, for 20 min-utes each! Lessons take place every Monday, Wednesday and Friday for 1 hour!Their main aim is to improve and strengthen the physical condition of the parents. It shows howimportant it is for parents to be fit so they can stress the importance of physical exercise to theirchildren and inspire them to exercise. However children can also be an inspiration for their parentsand urge them to start exercising! You'll be also amazed to learn that a teachers’ Yoga class takes place every Wednesday afternoon.

It seems that both parents and teachers want to highlight the importance of physical exercise andbecome role models for us!

The second Official Falcon School Quiz Night took place under the evening skyof Friday 27th September, by the rich phosphorescence of the school swimmingpool. The event included 7 teams, consisting of parents, teachers and studentsengaged in answering challenging questions about Geography, Languages, Sci-ences, and various General knowledge subjects. Upholding the School’s Aca-demic strength, the participants proved to be very knowledgeable in all fields, with the victorious teams eventually receiving the prize of a bottle of wine ac-companied with a copy of the famous Falcon School Cookbook.

On the occasion of "World Animal Day"on Friday the 4th ofOctober the Falcon School welcomed Mrs. Natasha and herdog Aris, from the Nicosia Dog Shelter who came to inspire us!The Nicosia Dog Shelter provides support and protection toall dogs that need it, but its proper function depends on volun-teers therefore, anyone who can go and help is very welcome! Some pieces of advice we got:- microchip your dogs if you don't want to lose them-sterilize them in order not to have too many puppies whichyou cannot take care of-if you find a stray dog don't leave it there, call the shelterRemember, if you can't adopt a dog you can still go to the shel-ter as a volunteer and help socialize dogs from harsh back-grounds by walking them, showing love to them and givingthem some attention!

Paphos Summer ParadiseIn the summer P6 and P5 went on a trip to Paphos. We were joined by

Mr. Scott, Mrs. Mack., and Mrs. Ioannou. The trip was packed with adven-ture, and surely lots of fun. I remember it like it was just yesterday…On the first day, we were super tired, so after having lunch and arriving atthe hotel, we unpacked and had a rest. We were then all told to gather upand go for a nice swim. After the pool, we returned to our rooms, showeredand relaxed. At night, we went shopping for water and other supplies, andwhen we got back to the hotel we had dinner and we enjoyed each other’scompany. That was our typical first day, but all the other days were activeand amusing. We went on a boat trip from the Paphos Harbor, enjoyed thesummer sun at the Water Parkand we even did some historicalsightseeing at the Tombs of theKings. On the last day, we vis-ited the Baths of Aphrodite andthe Paphos Zoo, which wereboth amazing. It was one of thebest experiences of my life andone which I’ll remember foryears to come.

If you had a time machine where would you travel to? Would you visitthe dinosuars, prevent wars from happening, or discover already discoveredtrasures all over again? I know that most of us would just visit a past version ofourselves and either prevent our past self from doing something, or just givehim/her some advice. With that in mind, we decided to act as a time machine

and take the teachers to a trip back in time to visit their teenage selves.

“Miyazaki has decided that ‘The Wind Rises’will be his last film and he will now retire”, an-nounced Koji Hoshino, who runs Studio Ghi-bli, on September 1st. Miyazaki’s all 11hand-drawn features, including his debut with“The Castle of Cagliostro” in 1979, have intro-duced marvelous worlds, impossible to be forgotten by thousands of fans world-wide. After his Academy Award for Best Animated Feature-winning “SpiritedAway” in 2003, Miyazaki gained fame which brought his previous works into thespotlight. However, the quality and the unique characteristics of his featureshave never been altered; the audience -consisting of both children and adults-has always been amazed by his work. Miyazaki will always be considered as agreat contributor in the art of animation films.

“The Wind Rises” was released this summer in Japan and now the rest of theworld is awaiting its arrival. We won’t have to wait for too long though, as it isdue to be released within the next few months.

News Update By Philip Karageorghis 6B

For those of you who haven’t been keeping up with the news over the summer, here are some of the most important headlines from around the world.

Syrian Conflict Escalates:On the morning of the 21st of August, a chemical nerve agent (sarin)was deployed amid heavy fighting between government and oppositiontroops in the agricultural belt around Damascus. On report of this, theUN sent a team of chemical weapons experts to verify the claim (madeby opposition members). Before these reports (which ended up beingtrue) were confirmed however, President Obama and his Secretary ofState promptly began to warn of military action against the AssadRegime in order to “send a clear message” against the use of such chem-ical weapons (designated as Weapons of Mass Destruction by the UN).Russia, which has been President Assad’s most important ally through-out these past two years of conflict, responded with warnings againstsuch as attack, urging the US and Assad’s Government to reach a peace-ful, diplomatic solution. Upon observing the lack of support for militaryaction within his own country and abroad, President Obama finally de-cided against such brash action and, with thehelp of Russia, reached an agreement inwhich all Syrian Chemical Weapons would bedestroyed by “mid-2014”. The Syrian CivilWar however, has not subsided, with morethan an estimated 100,000 people killed sinceits beginning over 2 years ago.

George Zimmer-man Trial Acquitted :George Zimmerman, a Hispanic-

American infamous for fatally shoot-ing a 17-year old (Trayvon Martin) onFebruary 26th, 2012 was found notguilty of Second degree murder andmanslaughter in a trial that lastedfrom the 10th of June to the 13th ofJuly. At the time of the shooting, Zim-merman was operating as the coordi-nator of the neighbourhood watch ina gated community. Upon seeingMartin acting “suspiciously”, Zim-merman followed the youth, at whichpoint Martin reportedly attacked Zim-merman and Zimmerman respondedby lethally shooting Martin in “self-defense”. Misleading media coveragemeant that during the months follow-ing up to the trial, Zimmerman wasaccused by the public of committinga hate crime as well as “racial profil-ing” (since people believe that theonly reason that Zimmerman followedMartin in the first place was becausehe was African-American). Upon theannouncement of the verdict, manyprominent figures throughout Amer-ica (for example, Al Sharpton andeven President Obama himself) madeheartfelt speeches with regards to thecase.

Morsi Overthrown in Military:Mohammed Morsi, the democratically elected Islamist

President of Egypt was overthrown by a military-led Coup onthe 3rd of July, amid growing unpopularity with the Egyptian public.Morsi has been under house arrest since being overthrown and his party(the Muslim Brotherhood) has been all but gutted by the new government, with most of its more important members jailed or awaiting trial. Morsi’ssupporters however are still taking to the streets in protest, inevitablyclashing with police. This move by the Egyptian Army has returned Egyptto almost the same situation it was in prior to the Arab Spring in 2011,when rebels forced the military backed President Hosni Mubarak.

U.S Government Shutdown:After failing to reach an agreement on a budget for the next year in Congress onthe 1st of October, the US Government is undergoing a partial shut-down. This isdue to clashes between the Republican and Democratic Parties especially with re-gards to President Obama’s controversial Healthcare proposal, dubbed “Oba-macare”. This bill has received huge opposition from the Republicans since itscreation, and the Republican Party’s final desperate act to stop it even coming into effect seems to have been by not coop-erating with its Democrat counterparts in Congress. The partial shutdown means that 800,000 federal employees will findthemselves on unpaid suspension. This will mean that dozens of federal museums (the Smithsonian), libraries (the Libraryof Congress) and attractions (the Statue of Liberty) will be shut down. Some reservations have been made with the case ofworkers at nuclear power plants, air traffic controllers and national security personnel.

Eat right, be bright

Ahealthy diet means eating a wide variety of foods so that you get all the nutrientsyou need, and eating the right number of calories depending on how active you are...

Try and eat lots of healthy foods like fruits, vegetables, fish (vitamins), meat (protein), dairy(iron and calcium) and bread (carbohydrate- not too regularly). Small amounts of (rich-in-calo-

rie) foods as cakes, lollies, are fine to eat, as long as you don't eat them all the time.

Healthy Diet Plan

By Irene Tsimon 4 Red

Following a healthy diet does not mean that you have tobe deprived of ‘unhealthy’ foods. Sweets are a part of a bal-anced diet, but in the right amount. The goal of a healthierlifestyle is to enable us, as teens, to have enough energy to

carry out our everyday demanding activities.

The Ugly Truth

By Anonymous

BOYSANDGIRLS

Teenage girls are, unfortu-nately, a common species witha desperate need for attention

that CANNOT be satisfied, no mat-ter how much you smother themwith it. Their only aim atthis point in life, is tolook better than any-one else, particu-larly their friends.Whatever you say willoffend them in SOMEway and beware of nevergetting anything right with them.

They can osten be seen slatheringtheir face in make-up, posing at theperfect angle and adjusting the lightto hide all pimples to take a series ofendless ‘selfies’; the best of which willbe their new profile picture. This iswhat they do with their free time.

Their eating habits are perhaps themost unpredictable of all species-their diet varies in content andquantity throughout the day de-pending on how faithful they havebeen to their calorie-counting ritual. This unstable diet is perhaps theroot of all their disastrous character-istics, the most obvious being theiroversensitivity, their humourlessnessand the prickly behaviour.

They are not completely satanic be-ings-their ability to empathise withtheir friends and sit through hoursof analysing certain situations fromall possible angles is some consola-tion for the energy and bravery that

is required to deal with them. The opposite sex is equally as

common but tends to be the morelight-hearted folk. You can make a

joke amongst them without receiv-ing a stomach-

churningexpression of

disgust forbeing ‘so in-

sensitive’ in re-sponse. One

does not have to feelon edge all the time, living in fear ofsaying the wrong thing and never, ever really being forgiven for it.

However, teenage boys are ratherconfused, lost souls. With extreme‘desires’ for one girl, yet this strange, warm feeling (which to them is to-tally incomprehensible) for someonecompletely different, they roam theEarth aimlessly, showing interest inboth yet acting on neither urge, leav-ing a trail of bewildered girls in theirwake.

They tend to travel in packs, rather than in exclusive twos orthrees like girls, all crowdedaround a phone watching high-lights from a football match ormaking jokes. To some this isendearing, to others infuriat-ing.

Their diet is whatever can befound in the fridge (the floor, bus-stop bench, under the bed etc) thusstrange combinations were born (the

crisp sandwich did not require asmuch imagination as you may havethought.)

And so, when you try and add thetwo together it is quite a spectacle towatch. Eminem once said very ap-propriately in a song of his “that’swhat happens when a tornado meetsa volcano”. A very complicated, dis-astrous situation occurs whereby thegirls (the volcano) erupt-withoutANY warning or regularity-causingchaos and death for miles aroundand the boy, the clever person he is,flees as furiously and as quickly ashe possibly can-just like a tornado, sweeping and uprooting things in apanic, as soon as he sees an unstop-pable amount of scorching hot lavacome gushing from the mouth of thevolcano. As soon as the volcaniceruption has stopped, he drops allhe was carrying in a sigh of relief onthe floor, everything smashed to

pieces and mixed up. And then peo-ple wonder

why there isosten slightmiscommu-nication be-tween thetwo!

“Teenage boys arerather confused, lost

souls.”

Everyone is inspired and likes to inspire others as well. There have been many great people inhistory who are popular for their influence on the rest of the society. From scientists to artists, tomany political leaders, to even celebrities, there are many interesting people around us that arecapable of captivating us with their intellect, talents and charms.

‘’As you think so shall you become’’. Having studied philosophyfrom a very young age, Bruce Lee decided to devote himself to mar-tial arts. He often translated some concepts of philosophy into hispassion for martial arts; such an example is viewing yin and yangas the hard with its soft physical movements. His intellectuality, aswell as his dedication to kung fu made him one of the biggest world-wide legends inspiring many young people to get involved withMixed Martial Arts.

He was always intelligent and innovative, even though he dropped out of school.People thought that his ambition alone wasn’t enough to make him successful, buthis natural ability allowed him to be one of the world’s most celebrated men, who co-founded Apple computers. Suffocating Utopia By Zlata Vasilyeva 5R

You’ve always liked beaches, no?You’ve always felt like nothing bad can happen in that warm, sunnyhaven where the azure sea sparkles like crushed topazes and the breezewarmed by the rays of the rising sun brushes your skin… No?The beams of the sun falling onto the golden specks of sand, the treesswaying in the wind… Is it not utopia, the very definition of heaven? Youlie there under the shade of the palm trees, the wind caressing your sun-kissed skin. Slowly, sostly, the gilded sand wraps around your body. Youdon’t feel it, till the silky tendrils touch your face. In shock, you blink, and open your mouth to scream, only to realize your lungs are filled withsand. You writhe, kicking, and try to break free of your bonds, the sandtightening its grip around you. Finally, you tire, and you sink into thewarm sand, golden ribbons entwining your body in almost what seemslike a lover’s embrace. The tons of sand above you crush your ribcage, and you lie there, suffering for all eternity, unable to blink or breathe. But nevertheless alive, very much alive.Thousands of meters above your tomb, birds are chirping to the magnif-icent sunset.. The darkened aquamarine waves gently fizz against thebeach, producing the low soothing hum that everyone loves. But what is the hum? Well, I said that you can’t blink or breathe, but Inever said you couldn’t moan. Heheh. I smile, watching my tendrils of

sand shimmer in the sunset, my eyes glintingcrimson.

... Is it not utopia?

Horror on Halloween by Yehia Barakat 1B and Fania Christodoulides 6B

Trick or treat!” the three young friends shouted at the smiling stranger. It wastheir first Halloween going around the neighborhood alone. Adam, Brandonand Carl went from house to house, on that chilly night, filling their sacks withcandy. The entire block was enamored with the joy of this holiday, except forone particularly annoyed resident who rudely responded to the boy’s excitementwith “Trick!” before slamming the door in their faces. As they wondered backto the road in confusion, the blinking streetlight seemed to have swallowedAdam in its momentary darkness. Even though Adam disappeared. Brandonand Carl just ignored the eerie feeling which crept slowly through their veins, and just concluded that he had ran away to his house, to get another bag to col-lect more treats. Their steps, on their way to the next house, seemed heavy thistime around. Another smiling stranger once again gave them candy. As they were walkingtowards the last house for the evening the street darkened fleetingly once again. “This town needs to do something about its electricity supply!” Carl moaned inan effort to break the graveyard silence. He continued down the road waiting forBrandon to agree with him. After a minute or so, with no response, Carl lookedaround … Brandon was gone.Bewildered, Carl wondered why Brandon would leave him alone. He was theonly one who knew about his fear of the dark. He quickened his stride, and de-cided it was time to go home. The wind whistled violently. He tasted a hint ofiron in the air. Blood. The road blacked out again. Carl felt a warm sensation onthe back of his neck. He froze. “Trick or Treat…” something whispered intoCarl’s ear, laughing deviously.

“Blood is really warm,

it's like drinking hot chocolate

but with more screaming.”

Mostly Ds: The Music WalkYou’re always on the move, quite rhythmic. You takeit easy, go with the flow and most importantly, con-stantly try to enjoy the task at hand. If the work isgetting tough, just blast the music and turn thoseimaginative thoughts into reality!

Mostly Cs: The Art WalkGood news! The outcome of the other night’s research, whereyou explored your ideas away does definitely show (thank thecountless bags and folders you’re carrying). So what if youget caught up a little longer on that sketch; proceed withpassion!

Mostly Bs: The Catwalk WalkWell, whatever your secret is, it’s definitelyworking its magic because you continue to shineand look glamorous, even on a ‘’bad hair day’’.Watch out though; make sure you aren’t wastingtoo much time in the process when you could pos-sibly be learning those French verbs!

Mostly As: The Zombie WalkWhile it may seem you’re in your own zoneduring the early hours of those never-endingdouble lessons, as the sun goes down your en-ergy levels reach their peak, but try fitting inthose hours of sleep and you’ll see- you’ll be inthe mood for just about anything!
