Did you know that the 7th grade visited Camp Tilikum in
Newberg last week? Participating in a variety of ropes-course challenges, the 7
th graders discovered the value
of teamwork, group problem-solving, trustworthiness, goal setting, and communication. The retreat also fo-cused on giving each other positive encouragement, tak-ing risks, and group bonding. We hope that retreats such as this prevent social issues that often arise in middle school and equip our students to handle issues respect-fully if/when they do arise. The Holy Family middle school program intentionally develops these skills in its students to the great benefit of our school community.

St. Vincent de Paul Hurricane Relief Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma hit all at once and have created havoc in the lives of millions of people. Whether it be domestic or foreign, St. Vincent de Paul is always ready to help in a disaster. At this time there is great need in our own country and St. Vincent de Paul has gone to work. Hurricane Harvey was the first to hit, so a lot of SVDP re-sources have gone to Texas first. SVDP, by way of our Na-tional Headquarters, has a program called House in a Box. This program was implemented to supply disaster survivors with critical items to furnish an entire home from kitchen to the bathroom to the bedroom. A contribution of $2,500 covers a House in a Box for four people. SVDP Disaster Services is also working on the ground in Texas. Disaster Services per-sonnel are training 41 Vincentians who are deploying as part of six Rapid Response Teams for Hurricane Harvey relief and recovery. Parish Recovery Assistance Centers (P-RACs) are now set up to assist survivors in five of the seven impacted dioceses. Help for Florida will be next. In the very beginning SVDP members use to pass the hat at meetings and give the money to the poor. We still do a form of passing the hat at the Holy Family SVDP Conference. During the last two weeks our Conference raised enough money from Conference members to pay for a House in a Box in Texas and additional monies to be combined with other donations for Texas. We will mail our check to our national headquarters on Tuesday. The need in Texas and Florida is going to continue for a very long time and if you are looking for a way to help money is the best way. You can send a check for any amount to:
National Council of The United States Society of St. Vincent de Paul
58 Progress Parkway Maryland Heights, MO 63043
In the memo field be sure to write “Harvey, Irma, or Domestic Relief Fund” As I always tell you, St. Vincent de Paul is very good about working with others. In this time of great disaster we are working closely with Knights of Columbus, Catholic Charities, FEMA, Salvation Army and Red Cross. It will take the whole nation to pull people up from these terrible Hurricanes and there are two more on the way! Thank you, Penny O’Connell Conference President
