NEWS IN BRIEF• Nelson City Council has ensured Nature-land will continue to operate, agreeing to give the zoo a $50,000 grant, on top of its currently funding of $150,000.Orana Wildlife Trust, which operates Nel-son’s Natureland Zoo, has accepted the offer after recently advising Council the future of Natureland was in doubt, following the Christchurch earthquakes and subsequent loss of visitors to its Christchurch facilities.

• The fourth and final stage report of the Nelson Arterial Traffic Study is now re-leased. The report says Nelson does not have a significant traffic problem, nor is one forecast to develop over the modelled time period of the study – the next 25 years. But the report recommends Council continue to monitor traffic flows on a regular basis. Copies of the full report can be viewed on the Council website, www.nelsoncitycoun-cil.co.nz or collect a hard copy from the Council office or the Nelson Public Librar-ies. A public meeting will be held to discuss the report at 5.30pm on Wednesday 3 Au-gust in the Nelson City Council Chamber, Civic House, 110 Trafalgar Street.

“If you want to help and want to put in a bit of hard work then there is a place for you,” says Andy. “Last time I also an article in the local paper and thought it would be a great experience and to be honest, some of the motivation was a bit selfesh because

I was keen on spending a week after the build seeing the country with the group. But it was such a great experience I had to go and do another one.”Andy and Paul both got to work with people from other countries and Andy says that was half the fun. The other half was making a difference says Paul. “The people we are building houses for

c u r -

rently live under a piece of corragated iron at the dump. So this means a heck of a lot to them.”The new owners of the house also have to work on it, providing 500 “sweat” hours and also put some money towards it, de-pending on their finanical situation.Anyone keen to learn more about the trip can visit www.habitatforhumanity.org.nz or call Andy on 542 4357.

Young christians plan return to NelsonA popular young christian conference held at Annesbrook Church last week will be calling Nelson home again next year and hasn’t ruled out a more permanent move in the future, according to Get Smart di-rector Craig Clark. Get Smart is a confer-ence for young christians and hosted more than 600 people from all over the South Island, after relocating to Nelson, after severe damage caused Majestic House in earthquake ravaged-Christchurch to close. It was announced this week that it will now be held in Auckland, Nelson and Dunedin for 2012. “We can’t really say if or ever it

will go back to Christchurch,” says Craig. “It may result it in being in three locations in the South Island.” Craig says the confer-ence was “exceptional” and some partici-pants drove 17 hours on a bus just to get there. “Everyone was raving about it. They just loved Nelson.” Cafe on Oxford was one of a number of local businesses to benefit from Get Smart, making 400 coffees in one afternoon in a special Get Smart deal. “People loved connecting with Nelson out-side of the conference. They’re not there to get drunk or create disruption. It’s a posi-tive influence.”

Trafalgar Park seats ‘stomping proof ’It is now less than eight weeks before the Rug-by World Cup hits Nelson and each week until then Nelson Weekly hopes to keep you up-to-date with the latest news and information to help you get the most out of it and all the events planned around the cup.If you have any questions you would like answered, please email us and we will find the answer. • Excited rugby fans will not have to worry about stomping their feet too hard on the temporary stand at Tra-falgar Park, thanks to some extra re-inforcing by engineers. At the recent Super 15 quarter final at Trafalgar Park, fans stomped their feet on the metal stands, mak-ing an impressive sound to support the home team but asking questions of the stands safety. Engineers have since created a double-brace sys-

tem to withstand earthquake shaking, high winds and the stomping of spectator’s feet.• An application by council to exceed noise lim-its for five key events is due by the end of July. The

events that are expected to breach the noise limit are the three games, the Fanzone

at Trafalgar St and the Carnivale/Sonic Youth event.• More than 300 Nelsonians have registered to be a volunteer in the city

during the Rugby World Cup. Job of-fers have now gone out and organisers

are urging people to respond to the offer.• Ticket sales for the three Nelson games are

strong, according to Rugby World Cup 2011. However, there is still seats available at each of the city’s three games. To buy your ticket, visit www.rugbyworldcup.com/tickets or from Every-man Records on Hardy St. 4 McGlashen Ave, Richmond

The Hyundai i45, known as the Sonata in the U.S., has been named Best-in-Segment (tied with the Volkswagen Jetta), in the mid-size car category of Strategic Vision’s 2011 Total Quality Index® (TQI). The Total Quality Index measures total vehicle satisfaction among new car owners in the United States. The Index measures the quality of the ve-hicle as well as the emotional connection it makes with buyers. “This is great international endorsement for the Hyundai i45, and comes just weeks after Hyundai took first place in New Zealand for passenger ve-hicle sales for the month of June. “The i45 was an important contributor to the local result and the Index rating has highlighted that it ticks both the emotional and rational boxes in terms of customer satisfaction,” said Chief Op-erating Officer for Hyundai New Zealand, Tom Ruddenklau. Alexander Edwards, President of Strategic Vision, said that customers that took part in the Index

explicitly stated that they love their Hyundai i45; from the performance-styled exterior to the com-fortable, thoughtfully designed exterior. The other brands evaluated for the mid-size cat-egory included the Honda Accord, Mazda6, Nis-san Altima, and Toyota Camry. The strong showing in the TQI extends Hyundai i45’s winning streak in Strategic Vision studies. Hyundai’s i45 also topped this year’s Strategic Vi-sion Total Value Index, tallying the highest Total Value score in the 14-year history of the study. This result surpassed all competitors past and present, including those in the luxury segments. The Total Quality Index® asked US buyers to rate all aspects of the ownership experience - from buying and owning to performance and driving. Results were calculated from 37,069 buyers who bought 2011 models between the months of Sep-tember to December of 2010. Strategic Vision has presented the Total Quality Index® annually since 1995.

College old boy donates book ‘full of emotion’At 19, Nelson man Peter Ramsay left his home town to go to war. On Monday he returned to give the next genera-tion a glimpse to what he witnessed in a book written by himself and his comrades on their ex-perience during the Vietnam War.Peter presented the book to the head master of his former school, Nelson College.Gary O’Shea says his students are keenly aware of the history the school has with war, with hun-dreds of its former pupils heading off to fight in various battles.“This book will be another tool for our students

and we are very grateful to receive it.”Peter, who now lives in Perth, says the book was cleansing to write and it is a collaboration of sol-dier’s in Peter’s battalion.“It’s the first time a book like this has been put to-gether by New Zealand veterans of the Vietnam War. Usually it’s done by a biographer or a histo-rian but this is done by us and because of that it is full of emotion.”Peter, who earned a British Empire Medal, for saving lives in an avalanche on Mt Cook while in the Army, says the book is also a fantastic me-mento for family members of the soldiers.

TUESDAY 26 July 2011

Some of Nelson man Adam Harris’ patients say he looks too young to be a doctor, but after six years of study and plenty of hard work, he is more than up to the job.Adam, along with seven other first year doctors, has made the daunting transition from medical student to house surgeon, taking on new-found responsibilities and plenty of long hours. Nelson Hospital is one of the most sought after placements for first year doctors, due to its smaller size and hands on training opportunities. In the last intake, eight graduates out of 180 applicants were lucky enough to gain accept-ance at Nelson. Their daily duties range from to attend-ing cardiac arrests and performing surgical procedures to reassuring delirious patients and assisting patients’ bowel movements. Adam and Xiamin Liang are the two locals in the group with Adam attending Nayland College and Xiamin Nel-son College for Girls. The pair are getting used to having family friends, old neighbours or teachers admitted to hospital. Xiamin says she likes to have a chat or buy them a coffee, while Adam says it’s nice being able to have those pre-existing relation-ships with patients, even if some of his long time Nelson mates think “it’s a bit of a joke” that he’s now a doctor.“I’m only 24 and I have Doctor in front of my name. My mates think it’s funny I can prescribe medications so they ask for them as a joke,” he says.Over the past few months, the group of five guys and three girls say they have become a close-knit team and have had to get used to working plenty of hours, including week-ends and public holidays, and dealing with some horrific injuries to patients. Xiamin admits that sometimes she feels “like a nana”. “I go home, eat and crash,” she says.Another doctor, James Parsons adds that the workload is made easier by knowing they’re “all in the same boat” and

he jokes that free lunch and free coffee help to make the long hours more bearable.Although being a doctor is shown as a glamorous on sev-eral TV hospital dramas, James says the reality is often closer to an early episode of the comedy Scrubs. “There’s so much stress that sometimes you just have to laugh about it,” he says. The new doctors share plenty of light-hearted banter with each other and patients, but at times they are taken aback by distressing cases and Brian Grainger says in those situ-

ations debriefing with peers is “very cathartic.” Some of the harder things the group has had to witness in-clude: vehicle accidents, amputations, patient deaths and grieving families. But they feel, despite the pressure, they are coping well and are excited about finishing the year in Nelson. “The best thing about Nelson is the relationships you build with hospital staff and your patients. “You just don’t get that as often in a larger centre,” says Adam.

Now is your last chance to enter your neigh-bour into this year’s Nelson Weekly Good Neighbour of the Year Award.Organiser, Kim Mac-Donald says the awards are all about recog-nising the region’s top neighbours and she encour-ages people to nominate their neighbour be-fore the dead-line at the end of this month.“Neighbours are so important and if you have a great neighbour it can really make a big difference to your well-being. So if you have a great neighbour who has gone above the call of duty, we would love to hear your story.”The awards were start-ed last year and saw neighbours in the four community constable areas – Nelson city, Victory, Stoke and Ta-

hunanui – win awards. All four winners were featured in articles in Nelson Weekly. So far entries have been for a number of good deeds includ-ing showing new resi-dents the local walks and parks; comfort through tough peri-

Three years ago Stoke man Jason Monopoli took part in a race across Australia’s toughest terrain on a 50cc scooter – called the Postie Bike Challenge. Now he has bought a similar idea to our shores and after a test run last year is inviting people to come and be a part of the Toughest Scooter Challenge in the World. The Survivor Scooter event will start in Picton and head across to Nelson and down to Greymouth with as much off-roading as pos-sible. But Jason says the four day event is not a race and is all about

having a good time. “Because the bikes obviously aren’t made for what we do with them we get a lot of broken down bikes, so we will all travel together, help each other out and make sure we all survive.”The event covers off road tracks around the top-of-the-south on scooters. It is also designed so non-motorcycle people can come along. “With a scooter you can drive it on a car licence which is really handy.”Last year two women entered the event and they were the only ones that didn’t require a ride in the safe-ty truck.

Jason says the cost of the trip is kept pretty low with the entry fee a donation to child’s charity KPH. The series is being held this Labour weekend in October with the final day finishing the day of the Rugby World Cup final says Jason.“It will be a perfect way to end it, on your scooter all day, then to a Grey-mouth pub to watch the rugby.”To find out more about the event visit www.survivorscooter.com or email Jason on [email protected]. Entries need to be confirmed by August 12.

When Barbara & Gilbert Leov de-cided it was time to sell their two bedroom home in Marybank, they set about the task in a logical and in-telligent fashion. They researched the many and varied methods commonly used to sell homes, weighing up the costs and time involved with each method. Carefully considering their options they chose to use Homesell. They immediately saw the enormous difference that saving the real es-tate commission would make to their final cash po-sition. Having spo-ken with Helena, they also had faith that she would deliver them the result they wanted. Clearly savvy home-owners like the Leov’s who do their research find that more and more of us are now selling and buying homes privately. Given that Homesell is the largest private sale property market-ing company in NZ, the decision to use their services becomes an easy one. Looking into the process you will also find Homesell offers the most comprehensive suite of services for the money right here in the top of the South. The Leov’s choose to use Homesell’s Premier Marketing package, which perfectly married

their skills with Homesell’s marketing power to bring buyers direct to their door. Here’s what the Leov’s had to say about the Homesell experience: “We used Homesell to sell our house in Jollie Street, Marybank. They were very efficient and gave us very good advice. Even though it took a while

to sell the house, Helena (from Homesell) was very patient and always kept in touch. We would certainly use Home-sell again, and would definitely r e c o m m e n d their services to others”. If you’re thinking of sell-

ing, why not join the other savvy sell-ers and give Homesell a call? Whether you have a luxury lifestyle property or a section in suburbia, Homesell is clearly the smart deci-sion. Helena will help you analyse your marketing requirements and skills and combine these with Home-sell’s products or services to ensure you have buyers knocking on your door. Best of all, you’ll save tens of thousands in commission!

Helena can be reached on 03 545 0064 or 0800 003 001, or by email at: [email protected]

A designer for Rugby Challenge, a computer game under development, gets to work on recreating Trafalgar Park. The Tasman Makos and Trafalgar Park feature in the game that will be released in August. The game will be avalible for PlayStation, Xbox 360 and PC.

People from around the globe will soon be run-ning around Trafalgar Park as a Tasman Mako, thanks to a new computer game. The All Blacks Rugby Challenge, scheduled for release next month, for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC and Sony Vita, will include a full ITM Cup season featuring the Tasman Makos squad and Trafalgar Park and is available throughout New Zealand, Australia and Europe. Some of the features in the game include multi-year franchise mode, online play and extensive customization modes. Other tournaments will include Investec Super Rugby, Ranfurly Shield,

Orange Top 14, Aviva Premiership Rugby, Rabo-Direct PRO 12, Bledisloe Cup and many more.Rights over likenesses vary from license to li-cense, however, Rugby Challenge will include “hundreds” of accurately and individually mod-eled player likenesses, according to the game’s developer, Sidhe’s website.Tasman Makos player Robbie Malneek says there’s a number of gamers in the squad and they had all been anticipating the release. “It will be wicked,” says Robbie. “Now that you’ve got ITM Cup in there it just makes it that much more spe-cial.” He says the whole team had to “strip down to their undies” last year in order to get photos taken for the game.

Councillors will face questions from residents and business own-ers of Tahunanui early next month. The public meeting has been called by the Management Committee of the Tahunanui Community Centre to address some key issues from a survey it completed last year.Amongst the key points are traffic volume and heavy vehicles travel-ling through the suburb, safe cross-ing along Tahunanui Dr, future development, access and parking around the shopping area and in-filling on sections.

Trish Duthie, of the community centre, says she would like to see as many councillors as possible there and plenty of local residents. “These issues were highlighted in our survey by residents so now we are bringing them up on behalf of residents but it would be great to see a strong turn out and show our councillors how important Tahuna is to this region.”The meeting is being held on Thursday, 4 August at the Muritai Centre, Tahunanui School from 6.30pm. All welcome.

The public area of the Nelson police station is undergoing a $200,000 upgrade. The Nelson station is 50 years old and the public area was last upgraded about 20 years ago. It is used 24 hours a day, seven days a week and the upgrade will be welcomed by both staff working in the area and visitors to the station. As a result of the building work there will be some disruption to services at the station.Senior sergeant Stu Koefoed says that from Sun-day July 24 the public counter will be temporar-ily situated at the Harley St end of the building.

The public counter will be open from 7am until 11pm daily. For emergencies after 11pm people are asked to call 111. In non-emergency situa-tions the public can telephone Nelson Station, email or contact police via the website www.po-lice.govt.nz. Stu says that while the work was being done friends and family would be unable to visit pris-oners being held in the Nelson cells, however provision has been made for lawyers to have ac-cess to their clients. It is hoped the work will be completed on or before 16 September 2011.

Paul Stanger is a television tech-nician, but lately he feels more like a secretary. Fifteen years of owning Nelson TV and Video Services and he can’t remember it being busier. He says he and another techni-cian Ian, have been flat out as phone calls come flooding in. But there is still a lot of confu-sion around Freeview and when people need to upgrade he says.“Most people are realising that they have to do something, but they aren’t really sure what and by when. I had a guy earlier this week who thought he had to up-grade by the end of next month.”Starting in 2012 the analogue system will be turned off in New Zealand, meaning every televi-sion will need either a television with Freeview built in, or buy a digital box. Television’s with Sky TV are fine and will not need to upgrade and with around 50 per cent penatration, means most homes already comply with the levels.Paul says there seems to be a lot of misunderstanding though. “People think they need to throw their TV away and it’s just not true.”The analogue system will be

turned off in Nelson in April 2013, as part of the second wave. People on the West Coast and Hawke’s Bay will have their analogue system turned off in September next year.Other Freeview installers in the region say they are just as busy, installing up to three or four boxes a day.Rowan Dron, an independent installer, says he has fielded nu-merous calls from people who have bought cheap boxes that either don’t work properly or need someone to install them. “There is a lot of junk out there, my advice to people would be to get some advice. Often you can get a much better quality system for the same price.”He says last week alone he took 45 phone calls from peo-ple wanting information about Freeview installation. “We are definitely seeing a lot of mis-information out there, people don’t really know what it’s about or when they need to have it in by. The biggest one is peo-ple worried their TV will get turned off and they won’t be able to watch their favourite programme anymore.”More information about Freeview is on the government website www.freeview.co.nz.

The oldest substantial house in the South Island is opening its doors, and kitchen, for locals to en-joy a delicious afternoon in one of Nelson’s most historic buildings.Warwick House was built in 1854 for merchant Alfred Fell and is now owned by Nelson resi-dents Nick and Jenny Ferrier, and they are invit-ing locals to join them for high teas, held each month. The next high tea is this Sunday. The Ferriers bake everything fresh and it served on delicate china with the echoeing sound of live music. The menu includes scones with clotted cream and jam, quiches, pastries, biscuits and a variety

of leaf teams. The high teas have been on the Ferrier’s Sunday to-do list for the past two years and the couple even held a 80-strong tea party for Heritage Week. “High teas have got popular and it’s a nice thing to do on a Sunday afternoon. By the time we get the tables up here, it’s buzzing,” says Nick. “It’s nice to have the room used how it used to be. It’s a chance for Nelson people to enjoy the house.”To book your place in Nelson’s history, you can contact Nick and Jenny at 548 3164.

Brass players of the NZSO are promising to blow apart everything you thought you knew about brass music, in Nelson this Saturday night. Brass Splendour strips away the full orchestra to bring an NZSO brass ensemble centre-stage. It features four horns, four trumpets, four trom-bones, a tuba and a percussion section. While brass is often seen as the muscle of the orchestra, NZSO Associate Principal Trumpet Cheryl Hollinger says the tour will prove that the section is in fact capable of an incredible musi-cal range. “The programme really showcases all that brass instruments can do. It doesn’t matter if you’re a jazz, rock, brass band or symphony lover – there’ll be something in this programme for everyone.“There’s some huge sonorous brass playing, but you’re also going to get the more lyrical, soft, gentle playing that a lot of people don’t think of when it comes to brass.”As well as the large-scale excitement of Gabrieli and the medieval pageantry of Elgar, the brass ensemble will also perform a funeral march by Grieg and Handel’s cork-popping Music for the Royal Fireworks. NZSO Associate Principal Trombone Peter

Maunder has arranged the Handel and Fest-musik der Stadt Wien by Richard Strauss espe-cially for Brass Splendour. “The Strauss is my kind of music, and I’ve wanted to arrange it for

Can Plan is the only locally owned and operated rubbish collection service in Nel-son and owner/operater Michael Boocock says a number of customers have been with him for over 13 years. “I really appreciate the ongoing business

and support.” Michael has owned the busi-ness for 15 years and now has five trucks on weekly runs that extend as far out as Atawhai, Wakefiled and Motueka. Michael says he not only offers the best prices, but the best service too and as a hands

on manager he stands by that. Michael puts a lot of effort into his marketing, which includes a regular newslet-ter to custom-ers. ‘‘We’re trying to get back to a more human face.’’ That’s one way of differen-tiating himself from multina-tional competi-tion. Staff at Tasman Medical Centre, formerly Cambridge St Clinic have settled in well to their new spacious premises at the recently opened Lower Queen St Health centre.Located on the ground floor, providing easy access and plenty of parking for patients, Tasman Medical Centre offers a number of improved facilities that lack of space prohibited in their former premises. Now with space to spare, patients will have the benefit of a Mothers room, Nurse Triage and procedure rooms plus modern new equipment such as electric beds, surgical lighting and a dedicated surgical area. In addition they will be in what is effectively a ‘one stop shop’ for medical services, with other complimentary services available all under one roof. All staff from the former Cambridge St Clinic moved to the new centre when it opened on July 18, including Dr’s Pip Reeve, Peter Thomas and David Orsbourn. They have been joined in their new practice by Doctor Katy Roff.Doctor Peter Thomas says the new premises offer a lot and there is certainly room to grow.“The old premises had a lot of character and had been a medical centre for over 60 years but we didn’t have room to expand. We were getting more and more enrolments particularly since the earthquake and we didn’t want to close our books but physically it was getting more difficult to accommodate everyone.“A lot of our rooms in our old premises fulfilled multiple functions, what was a nursing room and procedure room was also a store room so it was

constantly a case of ‘knock knock’ can I come in and get something, which wasn’t ideal.“I think we will find more people using our services, particularly because of where we are situated. With a lot of folk driving to Mapua, Tasman and Upper Moutere daily they may think we are more convenient as they will be able to call in and see a GP on their way to or from work.” Dr Thomas says they will be looking at tenanting some of their three spare rooms and have already had expressions of interest from midwives and counsellors which would provide complimentary services to the centre.“I think with the extra space we are going to be able to function a lot better and it will make our job a lot easier. In our old premises we had so many notes we had them stored in the ceiling, but in this lovely new building we have better systems and a place for everything.“I want to see this place grow and I think it will, certainly our staff are happier. We are looking forward to meeting our existing patients and welcoming new patients at the new premises.”

Bridget Budget answers your questions

Q: Our children do chores around home for nothing, but my friend told me we should give them pocket money so that they get used to handling money. What do you think?A: I think Internet banking and EftPos have made the idea of money unreal for children. Children need real cash situations to learn. I think you can expect your children to do some jobs around home for nothing. But a chance to earn cash for extra jobs will help a child learn about earning, spending and saving money.

Shauné Lisa Hattrick is a professional astrologer and artist living in Cable Bay. Shaune has had a practice for the past 28 years and specialises in interpretation of the birth chart and present planetary influences. “Astrology is a wonderful tool for giving insight and self knowledge. It is like a map which can help you along the road to self discovery and self realization. It can be incredibly affirming and supportive when going through long arduous planetary influences, says Shauné. An excellent and most fortuitous time to have the birth chart interpreted is at the Saturn return which is age 28-30 and also 58-60. People at this time are often ready for a major shift in their life. It is a time of sorting our priorities as we move into another stage of maturity, we can feel a sense of urgency, a time to take stock of ourselves-to drop away past conditioning, social pressures and become more in integrity with our self. It is a time of pruning what and who is no longer relevant to you. Questions like, who am I and who am I now and what must I do and how, astrology can support that situation. It can clarify your uniqueness, creative capacities and growth potential and can help you understand yourself and yours relationships.”

If the final Town verses Country “origin” game is any indication, scoring tries won’t be a problem for the brand new Tasman representative league side. The Tasman Titans announced its first ever squad and unveiled its brand new playing strip at a special ceremony on Sat-urday night, immediately after the final ProRugby League Town v Country clash in Brightwater.

The game was full of intensity early but was highlighted by its action, with a to-tal of 16 tries scored. Town – made up of teams from Victory, Tahunanui and Stoke – was never really in danger of losing, taking command within the first quarter. A second half rally by the Country side – featuring play-ers from Wanderers and Motueka – was not enough to claw back the impressive Town lead and as the half wore on the visitors took back

the initiative and stormed home to record a 60-26 win and take the series 3-0.The series, based on the Australian State of Ori-gin, was a first for the re-gion and Tasman Rugby League chair Paul Lafotanoa says he was thrilled with its success. “It re-ally builds that rivalry and gives the selectors of the Titans a great opportunity to see the best in the

region going at it.”The Titans, which will play a host of South Island teams this year including Canter-

bury in Brightwater, is to be coached for former Superleague player Phil Bergman. In announcing the squad he said he was stoked to see the sport back in the region and so much talent gracing local footy fields.

“We plan to get you guys fit and play a well organised brand of football.”The league revival in the region will be greatly helped thanks to the Titans says Paul with local players having real path-ways to the NRL, thanks to a link with its namesake, the Gold Coast Titans. “Young talent will have that opportunity if they are good enough and dedicated enough. But right now we are about build-ing this sport in the region and giving league fans an opportunity to see the game in their home town.”The Titans first assignment is to host the West Coast in late August, as part of the South Island competition. It will then go on to play Canterbury, Otago, Southland and Canterbury 20s.Paul says the support is here for rugby league and he says the Titans will be hop-ing to attract big crowds for its home matches.“If we can get big crowds it will spur the boys on and hopefully we can get results.”

TUESDAY 26 July 2011

They spent most of their teenage years racing alongside each other, but now that Harry Dixon and Matt Russ live on oppo-site sides of the United States of America, they’re targeting another reunion on the track.Harry, a former Nayland College student and New Zealand secondary school 3000m gold medalist, and Matt, of Waimea Col-lege, are both currently one year in to their full track scholarships at Eastern Michigan University and University of North Texas respectively. The two runners are back in Nelson for the three month offseason, but with one year under their belts, they are hoping to return faster and stronger this year with the end goal of reaching the NCAA division one national championship. “We started racing each other when we were about ten years old, so to race at a national competition would be sweet,” says Matt.Racing at the NCAA championship would be the only chance they have of racing each other in the United States - living al-most world’s apart within the same coun-try. In the height of summer, Matt receives an early wake up call at 5am as he stumbles out of bed ready to the hit the track be-fore the sun comes up, making it too hot to train. Harry on the other hand doesn’t have such problems. In fact he has the op-

posite - running on ice and snow. “I prefer the cold,” he says. “You can always put more clothes on, but the novelty of snow does wear off pretty quickly.” Harry’s biggest mileage tally was a mammoth 160km over seven days. Both athletes credited their scholarship op-portunities to Athletics Nelson head-coach Greg Lautenslager, who recom-mended them to a number of contacts. Matt says the opportunities they have received in the US college system is something you would never get based in New Zealand. “You can’t really beat having your education paid for, and then the opportunity to run at a high level, com-pete at a very high level. It’s such a good opportu-nity, not only to race but to get it all paid for.” With study, workbooks, accom-modation, food and even travel costs all paid for, the boys are loving it. “There’s just millions of dollars in sport over here.

There’s a college football team in Texas that sells twice the amount of merchandise

that the All Blacks do. It’s ridiculous.”Matt, who was a 3000m and 5000m run-ner in Nelson, is now being targeted as a 1500m runner. His personal bests include 14 minutes 50 seconds for the 5000m and 3 minutes 55 seconds for the 1500m. He fin-ished third place in the 5000m at the Texas Relays, a competition that is watched in front of 20,000 spectators. But with a re-cord 26 athletes breaking the four minute mile in the last indoor season, Matt knows that is the event he needs to mark his mark in. “If you’re not breaking the four minute mile then you’re no where near the top. It’s the signature event, everyone judges you on your mile.”Harry missed the entire track season due to injury but had personal bests of 8 min-utes 32 seconds for 3000m and 14 minutes 47 seconds for 5000m before departing New Zealand. He was running third on the cross country team at the beginning of the cross country season, before get-ting injured, and was a member of the Mid-American Conference winning team. “You’ve never run as much as you do over there. Now that I know where that level is, I can train up to that standard.”While Harry is confident of qualifying for national cross country championship, both athletes are hoping to reach the na-tional track championship before they graduate. “It’d be so cool. Nationals is the big time. All the super top teams are there.”

IN BRIEFRUGBY: The Tasman Makos slumped to its third straight loss in eight days as Counties Manakau took control in Blenhiem on Sun-day, winning 32-23. Joe Wheeler and Mitch-ell Scott got their names on the scoresheet, while captain Andrew Goodman added two conversions and three penalties.

FOOTBALL: Former Nelson Suburbs striker Alex Ridsdale is currently trialing with Jamie Doris’ Scottish Premier League side Hiber-nian FC.

RUGBY: Nelson College first XV prop Tyler Kearns has been named as vice captain for the South Island Secondary Schools team while Mitchell Drummond, Steven Soper and former Nelson College first five Fletcher Smith also got the nod for the clashes against Blues, Chiefs and Hurricanes regional school teams later this week.

BASKETBALL: Nayland College and Nelson College have both qualified for the New Zea-land Secondary School Basketball Champi-onship after both teams finished in the top three in the South Island. Nayland College, who won the South Island tournament last year and went on to finish second in New Zealand, were defeated 88-85 by Christch-urch Boy’s High School in the final at the Edgar Centre in Dunedin. Waimea College failed to qualify for nationals for the second year in a row after finishing eighth place.

Three second half goals crush competitive United

FC Nelson United ran out of puff as they conceded three second half goals against Richmond Athletic at Guppy Park on Saturday.Chasing third place, United were hoping to be the first team to take points against league leaders Richmond, and they had their fair share of chances with Sean Parkes missing two key opportunities, one hitting the cross bar.United coach Max Ancell says the side went in to the match hoping to overcome the Nelson Pine Industries first division leaders, and judging the first half perfor-mance an upset was on the cards, with United’s defence holding strong.Derek Milne, Raffie Darroch, Sam Miller and Johnny Gough all stood out in the opening spells. But four yellow cards in the space of 30 minutes pun-ished the home side. “We came off after the first half and said the disci-pline was something we wanted to work on,” says Max. “There’s no point coming off with nine or ten players, you’re just going to hurt your team.”But a header five minutes in to the second half to Rich-mond’s stand-in skipper Wesley Olea gave the away side the lead as the momentum fell firmly in favour of Rich-mond. Former Southend United defender Che Wilson hit the crossbar, while Davi Gonzalez Maciel impressed on the left after coming on for the injured Matthew El-liott. Sean’s one on one chance with Richmond keeper Daniel Cooper came soon after, hitting the cross bar. It wasn’t long before Sam Mason-Smith punished his missed opportunity, slotting in two well taken goals to seal the win for Richmond.Max says the early yellow cards mean’t the defensive line couldn’t take any risks in the second spell, but credited all three of Richmond’s “classy” goals. “I think at the start of the season if you asked Suburbs, College and Metro they’d all have said third place is what they’re are aiming for. But we would have liked to have taken some points off them today. If we kept that up first half effort. But conceding that goal, they just had all the momentum.”

Although not featuring in the major placings there were still plenty of positives in Nelson Girls College’s performances at the South Island Jun-ior Tournament held in Christchurch last week.Nelson College 10A faced tough opposition on the first day and their 14-29 loss to Craighead and 28–31 loss to Rangiora High School proved costly and virtually put them out of the running for the top sixteen as a top two finish in pool play was required.Coach, Ani Waitai says the Rangiora girls played “an Aussie type game” – they were very fit, fast and sharp, something Nelson had not encoun-tered before. Tournament play was new to the majority of the team and they had to learn to cope with three games per day as well as front-ing up for the three day tournament. Not knowing what to expect, some struggled with the effects on their bodies. However, Ani said it was a steep learning curve for the team as they all adjusted to the play, recovery and play again. Each and eve-ryone showed tremendous improvement as the tournament progressed. The team was without their goal attack, Ellie Bell who was in Australia with New Zealand Volley-ball commitments so they were a little light on shooters. Brittany Kelling–Lines was promot-ed and although a little shell shocked with the opening encounter she stepped up to the mark to contribute well along with Courtney Robinson.Nelson recorded a well deserved 25–15 win over Avonside before going into crossovers. Once the blue team had tasted victory they were keen to build and went on to win their next two games against St Peters and Waitaki Girls.Nelson left their best until last as they had a grand tussle against St Kevins. All players con-tributed well to the 31–25 win. Kea MGuinetty had an outstanding tournament

at goal defence where she worked tirelessly , while Kyla Rangi was at home in any of the WA, WD or GD bibs – she hassled on defence and proved to be a force to be reckoned with on attack. Alice Hazlett was a demon in the mid court, while put-ting in some precision feeds. The Nelson College 9A team had a three win and two loss record in pool play. They had a strong performance against Villa Maria, winning 29–24. Great team work saw Nelson account for Marion College 43 – 16 and St Andrews College 35–15. They battled valiantly before Craighead won 33–24, while Cashmere High proved too strong, losing 25–42.Nelson had a great battle with Rangi Ruru be-fore going down 26–28, however they finished

strongly to account for Waitaki Girls High and St Hildas Collegiate.Garin College competed in the Com-bined Grade, which is for smaller schools that have a mix of year nine and ten play-ers. Garin had a four win, four loss split.

The team comprises mostly year nine players and they had a settling in period, however once they came to grips with tournament play it was full steam ahead.Garin’s best performance was against Ellesmere when they won 29–26. Garin was the only team to inflict a loss on Ellesmere who went on to finish 4th. Kirsten McCashin developed well through the tournament and put in at MVP per-formance in the Ellesmere game. The defence was superb throughout with An-nelise van Zoelan and Amy Murphy forming a formidable combination, while Piki Boyles at wing defence applied the pressure on the outside of the circle. Poppy Restieaux was the energiser bunny in the mid court as she worked tirelessly while shooters Jess Brookes and Livvy Nott were steady throughout. Garin finished in 7th place.

agreed with Shane saying the four month construction was marked with excellent work and good coordination of the local sub-contractors.Gibbons had since been asked to carry on with additional works to get the older Rebel building re-imaged for the Briscoes move.“This was done as a separate item to the original contract. We were keen to use local contractors engaged to do the works and Gibbons proved to be a brilliant company to work with. We were also impressed with the wonderful positive attitude amongst all contractors keen to push the job through in a tight time frame,” says Martyn.Kemp Contstruction started the work on the site back in October last year with the demolition of the old pet store and clearing the site for surveying and final planning. The new build got under way in March after selecting local contractors. Rod Duke, Group Managing Director of the Briscoes Group, says the build was “quality” and was thrilled to see the finished product. “Under the circumstances and the bad weather towards the end we are very happy with the outcome.” Rebel Sport and Briscoes are combining their grand opening from 9am tomorrow, keep an eye out for a mailer in your letterbox for some great bargins.

Stoke Women overcome Marist, secure home final

It was an agnosing finish as Tahunanui Su-per Liquor Stoke Reds fell to league leaders Waimea Old Boys 18-14 at Jubilee Park on Saturday. An early lead to Stoke Reds kept the away supporters attention firmly fastened to a very close contest with each side trading points throughout the match. There was nothing in it, as Stoke put in their most impressive performance against the side they had failed to beat in its other meetings this year.Three well taken penalties by Stoke fullback Paddy Whakatihi and an excellent try to halfback Jason Beo saw Stoke take advan-tage on the scoresheet 14-13 with only min-

utes left in the encounter.Unfortunately some unforced errors and a lack of discipline in the dying stages saw Waimea take advantage of the situation an with an unconverted try and saw them take the game by the slightest of margains. Players of the day were George Wakatihi with a fine effort at prop and Jason at half-back who worked tirelessly behind a very competitive Stoke scrum setting a platform for the backline ably marshalled by skipper Wade Sinclair. Stoke Reds now move  on to next week’s game against Mot United at Green Mead-ows as they look to gain a win to stay in contention for league honours.

Reds go close against league leaders

With one eye on this weekend, the Stoke Women’s rugby team made hard work of its semi final, even-tually seeing past Marist 26-15 at Ngawhatu on Saturday. The victory ensures Stoke of a home final against rivals and last year’s champions Waimea Old Boys this Saturday. The supporters were out in force and cheered on the side who un-charactesticly missed a number of tackles in the first half, as a deter-mined Marist side looked hungry for an upset.A real battle developed between the forwards at the breakdown and scrum time, and Stoke relished the challenge of taking on a much larg-er pack.It was blow for blow for most of the half, with Stoke electing to bank some points early on, via two Jenna Eathorne penalty goals, af-ter Marist had opened the scoring. Stoke headed in to the break with a slender 11-10 lead and their finals hopes on the line.Whatever was said at halftime sure-

ly fired up the girls. In the second half Stoke got back to basics, con-trolled the ball well and spent the majority of time hot on attack in-side the 22.First five-eight Sallyanne Archibald caught the defence napping and crashed over after taking a quick tap following one of many scrum infringements. With the scrum dominating Marist’s, Stoke gained control of the game and possession. Dependable fullback Lucy Higgins put the game beyond doubt with a try a short time later to cap off a fine MVP per-formance. Versatile forward Abbie Cederman grafted hard all day to also share MVP points. Flanker Karly Larking was again  instrumental in a com-mitted Stoke forward effort. The team is looking forward to the final next weekend against Waimea at Ngawhatu and would appreciate your support. The match kicks off at 1:15pm. The Stoke Clubrooms will also be able at 3pm for spectators and players.
