Welcome to the last few weeks of the 2014-2015
school year! As we start to wind down the year, the
calendar is filling up with events that celebrate student
achievement and we want to make sure everyone knows
about the upcoming opportunities. On May 21, we are
celebrating the reactivation of the Riverside chapter of
the National Junior Honor Society by inducting our newly
qualified students. 7th grade students will be honored
the evening of May 28 and 6th grade students will be
honored during school on May 29 at Riverside. Qualify-
ing 8th grade students will be recognized the evening of
June 2 at Union High School. Athletes will be recognized
the evening of June 4 at Riverside. Specific invitations
will be sent to the families of all students being honored
at evening events. Please mark these dates and help us
to encourage your student so that as many students as
possible are able to be celebrated in these year-end
events!

As we approach the end of the school year, parents often look for ways to keep students engaged over the vacation. Grand Rapids Public Schools has two separate programs that might interest you for your student.
Summer School - applications have been mailed. The application is a colorful bro-chure called “Summer of Success.” Dates for Summer School are June 15 through July 23, Monday—Thursday, 8:00am to noon at Burton Middle School. Applications are due now! If you have a question about Summer School, call counselor Lydia Boyce at 819-5503.
GRASP— is a 9 week correspondence program which helps students maintain reading and math skills (grades K to 8) during the summer recess. The program should take each student about one hour per week per subject. Because answers are mailed to a scoring center, the program can accompany the child wherever he or she spends the summer. All lessons are completed, mailed to a scoring center, and returned to the student. We also have an online version of GRASP for grades 4 - 8.
Enroll: June 3rd– June 5th between 8:00am and 3:00p, or go to grps.org/grasp to enroll for the online version.
In person: GR City High, IA Bldg– 1720 Plainfield NE
Call: Phone 819– 2548
Fee: Book form is $20 one subject, $36 two subjects

Protect MI Child
Are your children safe while online? Michigan families, especially minors, are becoming inundated with advertisements
from alcohol, tobacco, pornography and gambling marketers through different internet and cell phone inboxes. Thank-
fully, the State of Michigan offers a free program to stop adult advertisements from reaching e-mails, mobile phones
(text messaging ads) and instant messenger IDs. The Michigan Child Protection Registry is a free do-not-contact
service for Michigan’s families and schools and can be located at www.protectmichild.com.
On March 17, 2015,
the Grand Rapids
Drive held an art
show for students
from all over Grand
Rapids. After the
judging was over, it
was announced that
Jvion Suddeth from
Riverside won First
Place in the Middle
School Division.
Congratulations
Jvion!
Riverside 3 R’s Respectful, Responsible and Ready
Riverside Middle School uses a PBIS: Posi-
tive Behavior Interventions and Supports
program to increase positive interactions,
behavior and academic achievement.
Students earn “tickets” that are used to
purchase various items from “The Hawk’s
Nest”, our PBIS store.
Students are also recognized through
formal celebrations occurring every 4-6
weeks. The incentive for May is a trip to
Celebration Cinemas to see Paul Blart: Mall
Cop 2! In order to attend the movie,
students must be suspension-free
(in-house or out of school) from April 22
through May 15.
Students must have a
school ID and be in
uniform while on the
field trip.
