VOCATIONS CORNER

Great things, even miracles, can happen to those who call upon and put their trust in Jesus. How are you called to remind those in despair of the great and unmatched hope that they have in Jesus? If God is calling you to a church vocation, call our pastor, Fr. Steve, or Fr. Andrew Lauricella at (716) 847-5535. You can also check out the “Priest of the Month” stories at www.buffalovocations.org.

FAITH MOMENT REFLECTION

Labels or stereotypes are standardized conceptions people have based on prior assumptions and experiences. The trouble with stereotypes is that they prevent us from gaining a more thorough understanding of a person, culture or situation. Thus, we overlook information that would change our perception. In today's Gospel, Jesus heals an ill woman that society had labeled "unclean" and a "lawbreaker". As the Gospel unfolds, we see that the woman, in fact, had greater faith and trust in God's love and healing power than the disciples and crowd around her. The Gospel challenges us to do away with labels and stereotypes and look for new ways of thinking in all of life's circumstances. God can always bring something new out of any situation, even when it may seem hopeless. We only need to trust Him. Today's Faith Moment was provided by Christ the King Seminary. You can listen to Faith Moments on WLOF 101.7 FM, WBEN radio 930 AM, or at www.faithmomentsonline.org.

WALKING WITH GRIEF

Walking with Grief is a monthly lecture series and support group provided to assist any person 18 years of age or older in their journey of grief. The next meeting is Wednesday, July 11, at 6:30 PM at St. Edmund campus. Gini Schultz will be our guest speaker, and the topic of discussion is “Seek Reconciliation, Not Resolution.” Learn how you reconcile, not recover from your grief. “Signs” of reconciliation will

Dear Family,

Prayer for Our Government by Archbishop John Carroll (1791), First Bishop of the USA

We pray, O almighty and eternal God, who through Jesus Christ has revealed thy glory to all nations, to preserve the works of your mercy, that your Church, being spread through the whole world, may continue with unchanging faith in the confession of your name. We pray Thee, who alone are good and holy, to endow with heavenly knowledge, sincere zeal and sanctity of life, our chief bishop, the pope, the vicar of Our Lord Jesus Christ, in the government of his Church; our own bishop, all other bishops, prelates and pastors of the Church; and especially those who are appointed to exercise among us the functions of the holy ministry, and conduct your people into the ways of salvation. We pray O God of might, wisdom and justice, through whom authority is rightly administered, laws are enacted, and judgment decreed, assist with your Holy Spirit of counsel and fortitude the president of these United States, that his administration may be conducted in righteousness and be eminently useful to your people over whom he presides; by encouraging due respect for virtue and religion; by a faithful execution of the laws in justice and mercy; and by restraining vice and immorality. Let the light of your divine wisdom direct the deliberations of Congress, and shine forth in all the proceedings and laws framed for our rule and government, so that they may tend to the preservation of peace, the promotion of national happiness, the increase of industry, sobriety and useful knowledge; and may perpetuate to us the blessing of equal liberty. We pray for his Excellency, the governor of this state, for the members of the assembly, for all judges, magistrates, and other officers who are appointed to guard our political welfare, that they may be enabled, by your powerful protection, to discharge the duties of their respective stations with honesty and ability. We recommend likewise, to your unbounded mercy, all our brethren and fellow citizens throughout the United States, that they may be blessed in the knowledge and sanctified in the observance of your most holy law; that they may be preserved in union, and in that peace which the world cannot give; and after enjoying the blessings of this life, be admitted to those which are eternal. Finally, we pray to you, O Lord of mercy, to remember the souls of your servants departed, who are gone before us with the sign of faith and repose in the sleep of peace; the souls of our parents, relatives and friends; of those who, when living, were members of this congregation, and particularly of such as are lately deceased; of all benefactors who, by their donations or legacies to this Church, witnessed their zeal for the decency of divine worship and proved their claim to our grateful and charitable remembrance. To these, O Lord, and to all that rest in Christ, grant, we beseech you, a place of refreshment, light and everlasting peace, through the same Jesus Christ, Our Lord and Savior. Amen.

HAPPY 4th!!!!

Praised Be Jesus Christ…Now and Forever!!!

LIFE LINE SCREENING will be performing vascular screenings at St Piux X church in Getzville on Thursday, July 12. This diagnostic testing is done to detect if you may be at risk for stroke, vascular disease, osteoporosis and atrial fibrillation. These screenings identify plaque buildup in

the carotid artery, (a leading cause of stroke), abdominal aortic aneurysms, risk for osteoporosis and other serious problems before they become life threatening. Stroke often has no warning signs or symptoms, therefore this testing can be life-saving. The results are reviewed by a board-certified physician and sent directly to the patient within 21 days. You may then share them with your physician as part of your permanent health-care records. Cost is very affordable for individual screenings or the entire package. If you would like further information or want to schedule an appointment, please call (888) 753-1131.

SECURITY CORNER

Do you know your emergency contact numbers? Many people don’t know their loved ones’ phone numbers because they are saved as contacts in their cell phones. In times of emergency, you may have to leave your phone behind, but will still need to know important phone numbers.

MISSION APPEAL

Fr. Robert Kimbaleba will be joining us on Saturday and Sunday, July 7 and 8, to speak at all Masses on behalf of the Mission projects in Tanzania. The Holy Father created Kayanga Catholic Diocese in August 2008. The Gospel was brought to this area about 100 years ago, and rapidly the Church is taking roots. The money raised for this Appeal would help train priests in this Diocese to minister to the large and growing Catholic population there. Please consider how you can help.

WE ARE STILL ACCEPTING REGISTRATIONS FOR THE

A fun faith fact about St Thomas, who was one of the original apostles, is also the patron saint of architects. Most of what we know about his personal life is legend.

He is mentioned in the gospel, especially in the story of the resurrection. He is also known as “doubting Thomas”. His feast day is July 3, and here is a short prayer to him:

Dear Saint Thomas, You were once slow in believing that Christ had gloriously risen; but later, because you had seen him, you exclaimed: ‘My Lord and my God!’ According to an ancient story, you rendered most powerful assistance for constructing a church in a place where pagan priests opposed it. Please bless architects, builds and carpenters that through them the Lord may be honored.

Happy Fourth of July

Blessings,

Marie Sajsa, PCL

PARISH OUTREACH NEWS

Due to the generosity of time and materials by so many people from the parish and outside organizations, we have been very busy at Parish Outreach these past few months. Below are a few projects and other work that have been accomplished:

Thank you to all those who put food in the barrel each week for our Food Pantry, donate monetarily to Parish Outreach, and donate material items for our Clothes Closet! Your donations keep our Food Pantry stocked and our Clothes Closet full for all the families that we serve weekly! We are also able to provide clothing and other items for SVDP in Buffalo and for the missions in Nicaragua.

Thank you to the Sweet Home Girl Scout Troops for their Annual Food Drive! They assist us each year in keeping our food shelves stocked and we are very grateful for their work.

The Seeds of Love Nicaragua team continues to pack for their work in 2019, and have had several successful fundraisers this year including the Pierogi Sale and Summer Bake Sale. Thank you to everyone who provided baked goods and/or purchased baked goods at our June Bake Sale. We are so grateful for your support of our work! If you are interested in learning more about our Nicaragua work, follow Seeds of Love on Facebook or e-mail [email protected]. You do not have to travel to Nicaragua to be involved in our work.

We had the Mail Carrier’s Food Drive in May and thanks to so many volunteers who assisted us on this day, we collected more than 450 bags of food. We are thankful to the Confirmation students who assisted us collecting food all afternoon and to the Amherst Youth Consortium students who worked sorting and packing all the collected food along with our Outreach volunteers.

Thank you to Chelsea Kerwin and the St. Chris School students who decorated 100 water bottles and wrote beautiful notes in Spanish for the Seeds of Love Nicaragua team! These water bottles will be distributed to children at a school in Camoapa, Nicaragua in 2019. Great job by all the students!!

Thank you to the Christian Service Committee who organized a baby collection on Mother’s Day for Parish Outreach! All these items will help our new moms get a beautiful baby bundle!

Last but not least, THANK YOU to all of our volunteers who work three days a week assisting our families, keeping the food pantry stocked, sorting through bags and bags of clothing to hang for our Clothes Closet and/or pack for SVDP and Nicaragua, etc. They are the backbone of our ministry and we are extremely grateful for the gift of time, compassion, and love each week to Parish Outreach. If you would like to volunteer at Outreach, please call (716) 564-9023. All are welcome to join our amazing team! Come over to Parish Outreach on any Wednesday from 10 AM-12 PM if you would like a tour of our offices and to see the wonderful work this parish ministry accomplishes each week! Thank you for helping us to help others! Blessings to you and your families as you enjoy your summer!

VOLUNTEER FOR SVDP

The St. Christopher chapter of the St. Vincent de Paul Society is looking for men ages 21 and older to join its mission of providing services to those in need.

We are looking for men to assist us with the many opportunities we have to serve WNY’s less-fortunate population. Some of our service work includes volunteering at Parish Outreach each week, assisting with food drives during the year which benefit the Parish Outreach Food Pantry, our Easter Basket project which benefits St. Luke’s Mission of Mercy and Response to Love in Buffalo, interviewing families who may be in need of financial assistance, etc.

Our group meets on the first Monday of every month at the St. Edmund Campus at 6:45 PM, and meetings last about one hour. Please pray and consider joining our Society. If you have any questions, feel free to contact John Borczynski or Zach Vanderbrook at (716) 564-9023.

FOOD PANTRY NEEDS

Outreach has a need for the following:

*Spaghettios/Ravioli *Strawberry Jelly *Cereal *Boxed Potatoes

Any donations of food are appreciated, and can be put in the barrel in the Narthex of the church. Monetary donations are also accepted to purchase food. Checks can be made out to Parish Outreach and put into the Sunday collection, or brought to the Parish Office.

We are always looking for volunteers - men and women - to assist us during the week with a variety of tasks. If you are interested in more information or would like a tour of the Outreach Offices that include the Food Pantry and the Clothes Closet, please call Cindy at (716) 564-9023.

Parish Outreach continues to be in need of boxes. We are looking for a dedicated source of boxes, if possible, but we are happy for any boxes that can be donated. The ideal size is a copy-paper box, but any boxes that are a bit larger than that would also be useful. Boxes can be dropped off into the Shed outside our offices. If you have any source that would be willing to donate regularly, please call our office. We can arrange to pick the boxes up.

Thank you for your assistance in helping us to serve the less-fortunate families in our community!

HEALTHY HOUSEKEEPING: JULY

Summertime is a good time to review proper hydration. Dehydration is the lack of sufficient water in the body. Water is important to the body at all times, but especially in warm weather. It keeps the body from overheating. The main way the body discards heat is through sweat. As sweat evaporates, it cools the tissues beneath. Lots of sweating reduces the body's water level, and this loss of fluid affects normal bodily functions.

According to the American College of Sport Medicine, to avoid dehydration, active people should drink at least 16-20 ounces of fluid 1-2 hours before an outdoor activity. After that, you should consume 6-12 ounces. of fluid every 10-15 minutes that you are outside. When you are finished with the activity, you should drink enough to replace what you have lost (at least another 16-24 ounces). For children, the recommendation for ages 4-13 is 6-8 glasses daily. Water is the recommended beverage. The beverages higher in sugar may further aggravate dehydration due to the amount of fluid your body has to use to dilute the extra sugar.

Symptoms of dehydration include thirst, tiredness, headache, reduced mental performance, dry skin, low blood pressure, rapid pulse, decreased urination (or very concentrated urine), and eventually shock. Causes of dehydration other than physical activity include vomiting, diarrhea, fever, and other conditions which affect the ability to consume enough fluids.

Drinks that contain electrolytes are beneficial in replacing sodium and potassium. This is important in maintaining healthy function of the muscles, including the heart. Too much or too little sodium and potassium can cause trouble. Muscle cramping can occur due to the deficiency of electrolytes. These are not usually necessary with outdoor activity of an hour or less, but should be considered with more activity for greater lengths of time outdoors.

Alcoholic and caffeinated beverages such as coffee, teas, and colas are not recommended for optimal hydration. These fluids tend to pull water from the body and promote dehydration. Fruit juice and fruit drinks may have too many carbohydrates, too little sodium, and may upset the stomach. If you prefer these to plain water consider diluting to 1/2 fruit drink/1/2 water.

Adequate hydration will keep your summer activities safer and much more enjoyable. Try something new this summer if plain old water is getting boring. Add lemon, cucumber, mint, limes or orange slices to change the taste but still achieve the benefit!!!

HOLY LAND GIFTS

Following all Masses on July 28 and 29, there will be a display of handmade, hand-carved articles for sale in the Narthex.

There will be Nativity scenes, crucifixes, rosaries, the last supper and many other beautiful religious items. Due to conflict in the region, many Christian families in Bethlehem struggle to make ends meet. Holy Land Gifts represents these families. When you purchase these gifts, you are helping support these artisans provide for their families, and live and work in a region fraught with tension and oppression. Thank you for any support you can offer!
