Board of Directors
PMI-AGC Membership & PMP Growth
Hashim M. Al Rifaai
Dear Chapter members, conference delegates & sponsors,
On behalf of the Board of Directors & members of the Project
Management Institute – Arabian Gulf Chapter (PMI-AGC), I am pleased
to invite you to participate in the PMI-AGC 14th International
Conference, Seminars and Exhibitions.
Being exceptional requires pushing beyond the expected, and
dedicating oneself to stretch beyond the normal. The low success
rates of projects across industries globally has compelled us to
place greater focus on how better to plan and execute projects by
doing things right the first
time. We have therefore selected “Raising the Bar through Project
Excellence” to be the theme of the 14th conference.
The Gulf nations have very ambitious plans for growing their
economies and ensure the sustainability of their nation’s welfare
in the long term. These aspirations and plans can only be executed
through projects, which in turn are the means for job creation,
market diversification, tourism, ICT services, etc. The disciplines
of project management goes a long way in mitigating failures, and
increasing the probability of project success, through better
alignment and collaboration among all stakeholders.
To address the concerns for all these stakeholders, we have put
together an exciting program for this conference compared to last
event.
This premier event is an excellent opportunity to explore ideas,
establish new contacts in the region, and learn new benchmarks and
hope to see them all well represented at this prestigious event. I
welcome all delegates and participants to this exciting event and
personally look forward to meet you at the event. The conference
program provides opportunities for our professionals as well as our
young graduates to share and learn best practices in the banking,
ICT, education,
We anticipate around 1,500 delegates from GCC major companies,
corporations, as well as prominent individuals from the region
& beyond. VIP guests will include top executives from major
organizations and governments in the Gulf.
PMI-AGC is dedicated in fulfilling its role as the focal point for
assisting its members and ensuring that the projects community get
more value. In terms of education, training modules, and
certification for in all both private and Government sectors that
are involved in project planning and delivery.
I look forward to meet you all in 14th PMI Conference, January
2013.

Rational Change Management Without Hype & Myth (14 PDUs)
Workshop Description : This is a highly interactive workshop that
is designed to provide both the ‘theory’ behind Change Management
and the practical application of that theory in both small and
large Change Management initiatives; from implementing a new
software application to Changing the Culture of a Multi-National
Organization. The basic premise underlying the course is that we
already know a tremendous amount about how we respond to Change
both as individuals and organizations gathered through our long
term work experience. This workshop is crafted to formalize that
existing knowledge so that we can apply what we know.
The course includes Group Work, Discussions, Change Process Models,
Change Simulations, Case studies in the form of numerous examples
of how we react to Change both positively and negatively.
Some of the specific items covered include; • The myths of Change
Management
• The value, and flaws of human behavioral models
• The applicability of the Kubler-Ross Grief Cycle to
organizational Change
• The Virginia Satir Change Process Model
• The single point of failure in change management
• Why good, honest, open communications is the pivot point of
change management projects
• Why resistance to change is both necessary and desirable
This event is intended to challenge your current thinking about
what is involved in managing Change. While the content level is
very high – it is also – based upon 1000s of evaluations over the
past 30 years – a fun and enjoyable experience.
A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide)
areas covered:
While Change Management is not a section in PMBOK like Risk
Management, Human Resources or Communication Management – it is a
fundamental body of knowledge that supports all of these areas.
Change Management is something that occurs before, during and after
Project Management and is a tool that should be part of any
Manager’s toolkit.
Who should attend? • Those currently involved in any aspect of
Change Management from awareness of need through to
celebration of implementation
• Those required to implement new change initiatives or recover
from failed implementations
• Those with expertise in management looking to increase their
ability to manage “Resistance to Change”
• Staff faced with unnecessary Change requiring a management
acceptable means to resist
• Project leaders who want their clients to embrace the product of
their efforts
• Those wishing to attain a practical, reality based understanding
of change management
What will my seminar experience cover? This event is intended to
challenge your current thinking about what is involved in managing
Change. While the content level is very high – it is also – based
upon 1000s of evaluations over the past 30 years – a fun and
enjoyable experience.
How will I benefit? Develop and enhance the contributions you make
to your organization by learning how to:
• Identify threats to the Status Quo
• Involve those affected by the threat, in the selection and
implementation of the Change necessary to alleviate the
threat
• Design a communication plan to address the real concerns of the
Target Audience
• Respond appropriately to concerns regarding the Change in order
to avoid reinforcing those concerns
• Empower the organization to direct their own change
• Install support structures to shorten the transition period
• Respect the existing status quo before replacing it with
another
• Minimize the pain of change in order to make it easier to
embrace
• Recognize why celebrating a transition is not just a reason to
throw a party
Which instructional materials will be used? The course includes
Group Work, Discussions, Change Process Models, Change Simulations,
Case studies in the form of numerous examples of how we react to
Change both positively and negatively.
A Change Management book will be distributed to complement the
course – as well as a DVD containing at least 5 hours of recorded
presentations to view at a later date with your team.

Strategic Applications of Value Management (14 PDUs)
Workshop description : For the last few years, two emergent
concepts are starting to take hold in organizations: Stakeholder
Governance and Value Innovation. Value Management (VM) is ideally
suited to support both and value managers should understand how VM
can assist their organisation. The application of VM at
organizational level can be a major source of competitive
advantage.
Recent bestsellers like “Blue Ocean Strategy” by Kim and Mauborgne
from INSEAD and “The Booz Allen Hamilton Global Innovation 1000:
Money Isn’t Everything” by Jaruzelski, Dehoff, and Bordia as well
as the popularity of Balanced Scorecard (Kaplan & Norton) and
the EFQM Business Excellence model, outline organisations’ desire
to better understand how to create value beyond the traditional
financial view.
Based on a deep understanding of strategic decisions and business
benefits, this Master Class seminar draws on the author’s
experience and expertise in applying VM at strategic level. It
targets all managers who want to deliver business benefits that are
in line with the organisation’s strategy, while making sure that
these strategies are achievable. It is tailored for business,
program or value managers who have some experience in running
projects and want to achieve both the delivery of significant
benefits and outcomes and improved stakeholder relationship
management.
This one-day workshop demonstrates, using a case study and many
examples, how stakeholders’ needs analysis, a cross-functional
group process, the concept of functions and creative thinking
principles, combined in the right framework can help deliver
business benefits consistently.
A guide to the Project Management body of knowledge (PMBOK® Guide)
areas covered: Project Integration Management, Project Scope
Management, Project Time Management, Project Cost Management,
Project Communications Management, Project Risk Management, and
Project Human Resource Management and the new Stakeholder
Management KA. Also Program Management
Who should attend? This seminar is destined to project, program,
portfolio and PMO managers who want to really be in control of
stakeholders’ needs and expectations and fulfill them while keeping
resources in check. It is tailored for managers who have some
experience in running projects, programs or portfolios and want to
achieve both the delivery of significant benefits and outcomes and
improved stakeholder relationship management.
What will my seminar experience cover? • The Organisational
Context
• Concepts of Value and Value Management
• Delivering Strategy and Business Benefits
• The Value Management Framework
• A Strategic Decision Management Process (case study)
How will I benefit? Develop and enhance the contributions you make
to your organization by learning how to:
• Understand the strategic use of value and value management.
• Know when and how to apply it in organisations with optimum
impact.
• Integrate VM within the strategic decision management
process.

Managing the DANCE of Complex Projects (14 PDUs)
Workshop description : Have you ever wondered why, no matter what
you do, some projects fluctuate beyond the normal variance? You
work hard to carefully manage the project, but the more you try to
control it the harder it gets? What you have is a problem managing
the DANCE - dynamic and unpredictable changes, increasing ambiguity
and complexity and shifting priorities. This course will highlight
the reality of today’s complex project environments and challenge
the existing beliefs of how we manage complex projects.
In complex projects of any size, but particularly mega projects it
is challenging to identify the multitude of variables to be
managed, let alone to anticipate how they might interact to create
unexpected challenges, can be overwhelming. Managing complex
projects requires a new way of thinking and a new approach. This
course provides an innovative approach to assess project complexity
and apply unconventional techniques to deal with it. You will learn
how to determine the real complexity level, and develop an
appropriate approach and plan that provides the right level of
control and flexibility for success.

Professional Training Program Description
Workshop Title: Project Management Competence Learned Through
Simulation (14 PDUs)
Workshop description : When using SimulTrain®, participants work in
groups of four people on each simulator. They learn from the
simulation itself: whenever they make a decision, the simulated
people involved in the project will react and give feedback. The
participants also learn from the inevitable interactions that take
place within their four person group. Each person plays very
precise roles (such as supervising the schedule, costs, quality, or
motivation) which unavoidably engenders conflict.
The SimulTrain® simulator trains in two different domains:
• Project Management technical competencies • Project Management
behavioral competencies
A guide to the Project Management body of knowledge (PMBOK® Guide)
areas covered: Covers all Knowledge Areas.
Who Should Attend?
• Project Directors • Project Managers • Portfolio and PMO Managers
• Team Leaders
What will my seminar experience cover?
Participants learn to lead a project in its entirety, along with
managing all of its stakeholders and theiroften divergent wishes.
They learn that a project functions as a system, and that each
decision can affect several of the project’s parameters.
While a technical decision may have an impact on productivity,
motivation, or communication, decisions regarding the team members
and their motivation will have a major impact on productivity and,
therefore,on costs as well as on deadlines.
Participants learn to manage and monitor a project on a day-to-day
basis, making the countless small decisions that project managers
are obliged to make: updating schedules, checking on progress,
managing quality, and organizing project reviews.
Participants also learn how to make decisions as a group. The four
trainees using the simulator together have to make numerous
decisions requiring them to negotiate between the goals of cost,
deadline, quality and motivation (each of these four goals is
represented by one of the participants). They learn to manage
conflict within the team and to take each participant’s perspective
into account.
How will I benefit? You will learn how and when to apply both
technical project management competencies in all knowledge areas,
plus leadership and collaboration competencies, in what feels like
a real environment and requires you to resolve conflicts within a
real team under time pressure in order to make key decisions about
your project and it’s resources. Key to this learning experience is
the immediate feedback on project impact created by the choices you
make in applying these competencies. This helps generate both
understanding and confidence in your abilities as a project
manager, while rapidly improving your awareness of how to better
apply the knowledge you have. The use of automated simulation based
on core project management competencies (in line with PMI®
standards) and calibrated against hundreds of real life projects to
ensure relevance and accuracy, enables the student to quickly
assess impact of various decisions and understand how they could be
improved next time.
Which instructional materials will be used?
The workshop will primarily use practical ‘hands on’ sessions with
small teams each working on a shared SimulTrain® system to
demonstrate the practical application of Project Management
competencies.
In addition presentation slides and a student handout with
SimulTrain® will be handed out which are used to explain core
concepts and to facilitate use of the system by the
attendees.
The system provides detailed reports of your performance during the
workshop and these will be reviewed at regular points during the
workshop and discussed with the class.

Practical application on your project (7 PDUs)
Workshop description: This workshop introduces the application of
Critical Chain Project Management, based on the Theory of
Constraints, in a practical hands-on approach making using of
Exepron software.
Critical Chain Project Management is a proven approach for
increasing project throughput as well as success rates, but
requires a modified approach to scheduling and project disciplines.
The workshop discusses these in detail and provides an opportunity
for attendees to understand how this would work in
practice.Critical Chain Project Management is one of the advanced
scheduling techniques introduced in the PMBOK®Guide, and has proven
it’s value in improving project throughput and success rates in a
range of market sectors, ranging from major construction projects
through to R&D and pharmaceutical projects. One of the
challenges in implementing Critical Chain on a multi-project basis
has been the lack of automation to help project managers use
Critical Chain effectively. Exepron offers a clean and simple
solution to this problem, and it will be used in this workshop as a
tool to help attendees understand how they can now put Critical
Chain project management to use easily in their
organisations.

Workshop No. 5
Building and Transforming the Next Generation PMO (7 PDUs)
Workshop Description : The project/program management office (PMO)
has been a growing trend in recent years, although the reality of a
turbulent business environment is posing new challenges for
implementing PMOs. The pressure to deliver more with less and
reduce overhead has created a need to find innovative approaches.
Whether you are building a PMO to support and enhance your project
management capabilities or to focus on the strategic aspects of
portfolio management, you may encounter implementation challenges
and mixed results.
Although the PMO can offer tremendous benefits and have a strategic
impact, the challenge is on the focus of the PMO and the way it is
implemented and sustained. This seminar is designed to anticipate
and answer the questions associated with the creation and
implementation of PMO.
Beside the traditional elements of a PMO, this seminar will outline
the steps necessary to establishing or enhancing a next-generation
PMO that focuses on both the tactical and strategic aspects. Every
organization is unique, and this seminar will provide a framework
that will help you to assess your organizational environment and
culture and craft a customized PMO and portfolio management
plan.
